Thanks for sharing the history of such a lovely locomotive! Living in NC, I'm kind sad she's far from her home, but I'm glad she's found herself found herself a loving home, where she's operated and taken cared for. I think your next episode should be on the CN 1533.
This is a GREAT SERIES!!! You should definitely continue this! This video inspires me to start my own series covering certain locomotives on certain heritage and existing railroads. Please do GP30 2198 next! Edit: Great soundtrack for this episode, especially with Asgore.
I'm not particularly into locomotives of any kind, but I grew up in New Hope and could hear engine #40 and see the clouds of steam every day, so I've always been really fond of it. I've heard a handful of different whistles over the years, like the "ghost whistle" they would use every Halloween season, but that bell chime is a very familiar sound. I'm pretty sad that last time I went to visit New Hope in 2022, 40 wasn't running, I would have really loved to see it again. I know it's expensive to keep a steam engine running but I hope it keeps kicking for a long time. Also this is definitely not the type of video I would have expected the Undertale soundtrack in, haha
Thunderbolt, I really like your documentaries and I enjoy every single one of them. I wanted to make a documentary and in 4 days the infamous “unsinkable” Titanic sinks and I wanted to ask your permission to do it. Full credit will be given. Thank you sir.
The bell is only hand rung when the pneumatic rocker which is located on the engineer's side of the bell isn't behaving. In my experience it is hand rung about 20% of the time. Even when it is working rather well it occasionally needs someone to give the bell cord a pull to help start it in motion and from there the pneumatic rocker can carry on the ringing without assistance.
#40 is a beautiful locomotive. And this video is wonderful to watch. Looking like a professionally produced video, It is perfectly executed. Refreshing music, placed in the audio background under a well-scripted narration, by an easily understood voice. A rarity on UA-cam. As society continues to wipe out our history, this is a record of our past, and the salvaging of part of it, by keeping #40 alive and operating. Would such inspiration continue by dedicated people. Looking forward to more; and it doesn't need to be just railroad history.
I know how you feel, I've grew up with my favorite steam engine SP 4449 and always called her by her train's name Daylight. New Hope #40 deserves to be special, just like Daylight and other steam engines big and small.
I didn't know that's how the numbers worked. We have a steam locomotive here on our old logging railroad a mile from my house that operates once in a while for Halloween rides etc. Now I want to investigate it. Please do more. Like the new Zealand bridge collapse locomotive. I dont know what it was but it looked horror movie mean. Brings us to these old tracks we never knew about as a community also. Might be something huge you have found for the steam world
That would be perfect for the ghost trains as the New Hope crews always outdo themselves with their ghost trains every year. I can just imagine sitting by a crossing like Aquetong rd or Lower Mountain rd in the pitch dark of night and all you hear is that ghostly Banshee echoing through the valley. A Reading Hooter (much like 2102's stock whistle) would increase the creep factor since the line use to be owned by the Reading.
Loved it, Thunder. Loved it. I love steam locomotives from the US, Britain, and Canada. I was also curious about New Hope & Ivyland no. 40. I found this to be very informative.
Most of the whistles she's worn such as the SP 6 chime are owned by other people that collect them. The Reading 6 chime and CN 1533's whistle are the 2 that the railroad actually own.
Sure was. It's a new hope for all kinds of engines. For example while most SD60s of NS and CSX dont look like they'll survive, 2 CSX ones (8701 and 8711) were saved and after receiving patches from New Hope are now on Pennsylvania Northeastern (Freight subsidiary of New Hope)
Great job. I learned a lot of things I didn't know about 40 which was always nice. As for another profile video, I'd like to see 2198 next, if that's not an issue.
New hope used to exclusively do steam, they no longer do that and it’s pretty upsetting. When i was a kid I used to beg my parents to take me to new hope so I could ride the train
First off I love the video and by the way have you heard of The Crab Orchard and Egyptian Railroad by chance? If not I would really look them up because they've got quite an interesting history and that history involves steam hauled Revenue Freight operations which only ended 30 years ago
It's said in the video. She does wear a RDG 6 chime. The only difference between 90's and 40's RDG 6 chimes is 40's appears to sound at a lower pitch (Likely due to the smaller boiler and the fact 90 has 5% more boiler pressure) Both are also Baldwin products (90 being completed 1 year before 40 in June 1924)
@@Thunderbolt_1000_Siren Thank you. I like the SP 6 chime best on 40. I knew that 90 was one year older than 40 but 40's RDG 6 chime sound a little different to 90's like you said.
In my opinion, the golden age of American Rail travel is from 1823 to the mid 1950s. Before planes take over in the mid 1950s, which is a down fall for rail travel in America.😞 But at least we have historic-tourist-heritage railroads.😀

I personally prefer the SR 3 Chime (the one if you had seen dajara521's films you may recognize due to it being the ghost of 836's whistle)
Good eye. 9 is indeed a USRA standard 0-6-0. She was an army switcher during the war before being purchased by New Hope as their 3rd official steam engine. She was like the grumpy old veteran of the 3. She's now in the hands of SMS lines in NJ being restored to her former glory
As of October 2020 she has been seen in operation currently sporting a 6 inch Crosby 3 chime. She was last seen pulling the fall foliage trains to the Rt 413 crossing just before Buckingham siding and is currently powering the "Ghost trains" as late as 10pm. She will also be found on the polar express trains as usual too in December.
It's my favorite in their collection. I grew up with that whistle. Though just like the R&N they always like trying some new tunes. Currently 40 is sporting a 6 inch Crosby 3 chime.
I would disagree. 587 and the other Berks of the NKP are fine and dandy but no one shows enough love to these little Consolidations! Not to mention I grew up around 40 so she's quite special to me.

The 2 8 0 engines are some of my favorite looking ones, I really have no clue why but they have always been pretty to me
They're underrated too. They don't get as much love as other steam engines namely the 4-8-4 northerns.
@@Thunderbolt_1000_Siren could you do engine of New hope
