  • The Government is preparing to offer dentists cash incentives to take on extra NHS patients, and send teams to schools to treat children's teeth.
Under a plan to boost services in England seen by the BBC, dentists will receive a "bonus" to take on more NHS patients, with up to 240 dentists offered £20,000 to work for three years in under-served areas.
There will also be a scheme to tackle dental decay among young children and Ministers are preparing to unveil details of the "dental recovery plan" on Wednesday.
TalkTV's Vanessa Feltz is joined by dentist Dr Ben Atkins and dental crisis victim Claire Simmons to discuss the UK's healthcare issues.

I’m going to France, throwing my passport away and travelling back to England in a rowing boat. The RNLI taxi service can pick me up, I’ll have a free hotel room, see the doctor, dentist, free meals and money. Other than that I won’t hold my breath getting an appointment anytime soon

The problem - as it always has - comes from the BDA, the British Dental Association. It is a 'closed shop' that actively reduces the number of dentists qualifying. The BDA should be abolished.

Try being an old person in a care home, unable to get anywhere even from bed to chair without two people helping you. No chance of seeing a dentist. Even the gp didnt know how to refer to special care dentistry in nhs and even if you do reach them the list os years and years long…

Dentists have become totally greedy, there is a sugery around the corner from me with lambouginis and porsche's parked outside, this is what this is. In addition GP's are doing the same ours are taking on more and more paitents just to get the money, and they want you to turn up for medicine reviews which attract money, and ticks a bo, but if you are ill you allowwed to talk about one thing and have 10 mins. They claim they are obliged to do this they not they are independent contractors. What ever happened to vocations and service ?

Doesn't dentistry fall under the NHS ? Way back, we had decent dentists, who did the job on it's merits, that was before dentists started to realise that they could get loads more money doing private work, i'm not having that any equipment dentists use is any more state of the art than hospitals, if the supplies that's needed are so expensive then that is on the government to regulate, my gut feeling is that it's nothing to do with equipment or supplies but just greed, preconceived idea of status.

Implants are mot available for those who lost their teeth through preventable disease e.g. tooth decay, gum disease.
Its for people with congenitally missing teeth, teeth lost due to trauma, cancer treatment, cleft patients, sometimes other rare pathology
Even then implants are not guarenteed as they may offer you a different replacement option instead.

Some patients really listen but it's usually the ones who don't who throw a fuss about the NHS and how they can't be seen and get their root canal treatment despite being in pain even though they ignored all the advice given by their dentist and let their tooth get to the stage where saving it is not worth it. Not to mention not even showing up the appointments to save their teeth either@

Recently had to ring round several dental practices trying to get an appointment, after being an nhs dental patient all my life and my own usual dental practice denying me an appointment or saying it 6 months until i could be seen. Lost my usual checkups during Covid and they lost interest in their nhs patients. Finally got an appointment but had to go private, beforehand they were not accepting new patients but as soon as i said i would pay my appointment was the next day. Had to prepay over the phone, after examination and a prescription for antibiotics was scheduled for another appointment in four weeks. Which i had to prepay, my own doctor could of given me antibiotics. Now i have finally decided to go ahead with private dental care because i know i will eventually lose all my teeth. The cost, not sure but i do have savings. Once done and i have dentures, hope that means i will be free of dentists. My entire family, Mum,Dad,Brothers,Sisters have this in grown fear of dentists. Maybe me going forward and sorting out my own situation will reflect on them

You can avoid tooth decay by not eating sweets and making sure that you floss and brush regularly. Teach kids to do the same. Sweets are very artificial. Many are designed to be sucked or chewed in the mouth for a long time and that is what causes them to rot teeth.
Substitute sweets with things that don't stay in the mouth for long. Eat fruit or biscuits.
Obviously there are reasons why sweets are not adequately criticised. Mencius said :
If your aim is wealth you cannot be benevolent. If your aim is benevolence you cannot be wealthy. End quote.
Remember to floss before you brush. Don't leave bits of food stuck between your teeth.

Unfortunately her meds caused problems with her teeth. She mentioned she was on a lot for many health conditions so this affects the teeth. My hair fell out on nerve block injections and teeth cracked due to grinding teeth at night. I wasn't even aware I was doing it but being in pain can affect teeth. Everyone's situation is different.

@Steve_the_Lion well, my partner owed council £24. It rose to over £200 because of court fees, and enforcement agent (yes, I messed the name, sorry) was by our door within a few weeks (which was quite shocking. I wouldn't think they would chase people for such a small amount). You can't just stop paying council tax because you feel like it. There is no way around it (unless you are a full-time student living alone or with other students or claim some sort of benefits).
