I did play the game... but the ending sequence feels a bit different.
From what I remember, the main character lays a up a big missle with shades (a pink turd in the Japanese version) on the machine before Sandrovitch escapes on his rocket, then the rocket explodes in space and he emerges saying he'll be back.
Is this what you get if you play the whole game without using any of the helpers?

Those green things chasing you during the final boss look like a nightmare to deal with, but without them it really looks like the boss would have been a pushover.
