My friend, I'm an English learner and because I'm blind I've chosen this kinds of podcast to learn English. What I try to mean is that in my language alone, solitude or loneliness only can be translate as soledad. We, Spanish speakers, lose a lot because we don't have this difference. All of us want to be little alone in order to have peace to think, or reading philosophy or I don't know, for the simple fact of being at peace. On the other hand, I think that no body in the entire World, wants to feel lonely. I read "One Hundred Years of Solitude" by Gabriel García Márquez, of course I've read it several times in my language before, and I think the translation was excellent, but I disagree with the title. To my humble point of view, the title "cien años de soledad" should have been translated as One hundred years of loneliness. If you've read it, What do you think? I apologize for my awful English and for bothering you. Take care, and have a great life.
"Give a man everything he wants, and at that moment he realizes that everything is not everything." Kant. Man's greatest need Kant thought, was intellectual certainty.
11:04 So true. "Minimizing the pain" This is exactly what I have started noticing about the change in my thought process compared 10 years ago. 15:15 as well. Insightfull
Wordsworth referenced "that inward eye that is the bliss of solitude". Schopenhauer understood the artist's need for reflection and meditation on experience, a time to derive meaning. This is bliss. for those who have learned the technique. He understood what Johnson spoke of: "the unexamined life is not worth living." As Warren Buffet said, " I insist on a lot of time being spent, almost every day, to just sit and think."
You people crack me up 😂 Schopenhauer lived in the land of Charlemagne and in the time of Goethe but you ignore all that because once upon a time Schopenhauer read something about Buddhism. However, Christianity and Kantianism had a more prolonged, profound, effect on Schopenhauer which is one reason why Schopenhauer’s best and most revered work came before he even knew what Buddhism was. The more you people ignore traditional western culture the more you become culturally irrelevant.
Schopenhauer picked up where Immanul Kant left off. His conclusions are a result of this line of thinking, not Buddhism. With that said, Schopenhauer was delighted when he learned that very similar thinking had been discovered in Ancient India. You have to remember that Schopenhauer wrote his philosophy in his 20s but was ignored right up until his 70s, so it was probably comforting for him during that stretch to know that at least the Indians get it.
I like to say I never get bored. It's not true, but there's no excuse for being bored. I haven't figured everything out yet. I've barely given the place a good look as to what all we have going on here. I'm in my 60s, and my musical skills and understanding are barely worthy of the label "music." So much worth doing, a lot that really needs doing, and I'm never gonna get to it all. I'll be bored later, maybe. Too much going on now.
I agree with the solitude philosophy. Sometimes I just want to be alone. Not because I'm mad or upset or sad. I just want to be alone. For example, instead of playing an actual basketball game with other people, I can choose to do an individual workout, shooting drills. Or instead of going to the gym to work out, I can choose to run 2 miles alone. Or instead of dining with someone in a restaurant, I can choose to go to Starbucks and read a book, alone. Wanting to be alone from time to time doesn't mean I'm lonely. Solitude is a choice.
Thank you. As an artist, of course I agree with the great philosopher! I am happiest making art, writing fiction and poetry, dancing and listening to music. Must do more 18th century baroque. Have always loved it.
A lot of people work hard (into exhaustion and overload) to face their problems directly, to remove the roots of suffering. They do this their whole life, and the problems are never solved...

Schopenhaur was an Optimist!! “An Optimist believes it is true. A pessimist fears it is true.”. - J. Robert Oppenheimer
This is a Truly Brilliant Channel. The best Advice and Wisdom ever. Thank you!!!
recently l began concentrating on this great philosopher, considering his ideas are much close to mine. I felt happy to notice this.
Schopenhauers views on women is a great read
Compassion nowadays may just mean being less toxic. Scapegoating and isolating people for abuse is still very common.
Boredom is the state when you have everything you need and oftentimes leads to nihilism and depression.
There is no doubt that Art is it's own reward.
I can't get into art lately. It's the only part of this video that I did not relate to. I was once a creative person, but I no longer have the inclination to create anything for its own sake - I've lost too much to want to create and lose more.
@@MM-Iconoclast The creative path can seemingly sometimes be a pointless exercise but I believe ultimately it is still it's own reward and worth pursuing for without creativity we have nothing.
@@Neil-Aspinall In theory that's true, but I have to find outlets that don't feel futile. I just don't feel like creating physical objects. I feel like moving my body (sport, dance) or perhaps singing (it's been a while)... but those things need to be in the right setting, in the right company - doesn't just come easily right now.
Thank you for these morning messages
Love his view about life.
Solitude is a choice to spend time with ourselves devoid of loneliness.
I cherish the moments of solitude I'm blessed with.
Your vids are food for my soul…consumed in the early morning when my brain is most receptive to new ideas. Thanks!

Learning for life.. accept the imperfect life as it is, don't wait to make it perfect otherwise it will be too late...
Wonderful. This reminds me of a funny line in 'Family Guy' when Peter says, "I don't deserve self esteem."
We can learn to keep “The Will” at bay but we can never escape “The Will.” And we will never be able to see outside of “The Will.”

Such a brilliant man!
thanks! being compassionate towards all entities!
A very pleasant voice. I loved the lessons. Thank you!
Schopenhauer had fantastic views that are true today
Incredible video, thank you so much.
I only recently learned that Schopenhause had been inspired/influenced by Buddhism!
Most Existential philosophers draw from Buddhism.

Amazing video and thanks for these insightful and practical life lessons.
This is music to my ears.
This is very inspiring. The kind of video my viewers would have loved seeing in my channel... thanks for sharing this great content good job...🙏🏽
After reading Schopenhauer I always turn to Leonard Cohen to cheer myself up!
A fascinating, richly listenable fellow. Thanks.
After watching this video, I’ve realized I was Schopenhauer in my previous life.
lol interesting….
LSD?

Schopenhauer was only philosopher who explained existence clearly and correctly
This totally explained why I use my bass playing to feel better!
I am happy to see my life fits his speech in a 100 x cent... Without having even tried deliberately 👌
Wow ...this was magnificent, I love this guy, thanks
Loving this! 🙏🏻✌🏻🇬🇧 a good moral compass!
This is very helpful. Completely agree.
A lot of people work hard (into exhaustion and overload) to face their problems directly, to remove the roots of suffering. They do this their whole life, and the problems are never solved...
I love this, channel, what an amazing offering to a world in complete chaos! I hope many people will discover this precious well of philosophy!
Well explained . 👍👍
As others have said Schopenhauer was not pessimist but more a naturalistic, not to be bored , physical pain cannot be avoided but as we treat it with medicine so our other pains with our efforts like meditation a walk read and like that Involve in activity other then your job.
I learned a lot from this video. Thanks for such thoughtful content.
Great video. Work of art, which
Of course falls into the last category. Keep up the great work.
Love this man.
Very well explained and easy to follow. I appreciate taking the time to explain some of Schupenhaur's lhilosophy
Same !
Shows the way to be contend in life. Also easy to understand. Much thanks.
So many videos on stoic literature are difficult to understand, or dictated in boring difficult to listen to fake voices. ( as if they knew what they sounded like) yours are brilliant and explained in modern vernacular and your own voice. Thank you
Gawd yes!
I can't stand those narrators who sound like they belong selling crappy items / cheap music compilations on late night TV @~@
