I met Fred Dibnah in St Paul's Cathedral when he was making he early 2000s show on buildings. What a FANTASTIC and interesting man. A Victorian Soul in a different age.
As for the volunteering angle, I have to be honest and say it is/was skewed to the current "older" generation. We (those currently aged 20-30) are going to have LESS retirement time compare to those in the 50+ age range. Preservation is going to get harder and harder, whether it's being sieged by coal use, enviromental factors, ageing volunteers, tourism dropping or just the spiraling costs of maintenance. Plus everytime a railway loses one elderley volunteer, you are losing all of their knowledge and experience from their possible life on the mainline. That is so difficult to replace or even come close to.

The loss of knowledge will be a huge factor in the years to come, it's why I feel things like engineering courses and apprenticeships are so important.

This is why I was very interested in what the Welsh NG railways were doing. Using new materials etc. In some ways it is the future that preserving steam locomotives will actually mean building brand new locos. Certainly going to counting on the industries that still make boilers and parts that are used in steam/diesel.

@@ScotSteam47 Also the importance of not relying on a single supplier for everything, as if that one company collapses it could throw everything into disarray.

Hate to say it but I can relate to his start. Long time moving things enthusiast. Studied Mech Eng (Hons) left uni, regretted the 4 years. If you want to do proper engineering F*** university and go weld at college.

Chris is a mechanical Engineer???? I would not have known! That is awesome! Also, as a supporter of the T1 trust, I absolutely agree that it is pointless to go after Mallard's record. Is it capable, of course! But for me personally, I don't think it would be very safe. Mallard had to be bucking about at that speed, and I just don't think it would be safe. I would much rather have it go for 100 mph all day every day and live rather than break catastrophically at 127 mph.

I think the more real danger is track damage due to hammer blow. The T1 has two cylinder drives and cannot be balanced like a 3 cylinder. The Pennsy tested a N&W, ran 110mph and the track was beaten up.

There is not 1 Steam turbine locomotive in Sweden there are 3. And 1 is under restoration to operational condition.
