Can I make my own Hornby 'Saint?' - What's On The Workbench? Ep.2
Вставка
- Опубліковано 15 жов 2024
- Since there is no decent 'Saint' on the RTR market, I decided to see what I could cobble together from a bunch of scraps and spares I had lying around (plus a few new bits). It's not perfect and I would definitely do some things differently but overall I am pleased with the result!
Maybe this will encourage some of you to have a go?

Very nice! The GWR using standardized components really helps out when kitbashing models.
Oh yeah but it’s addictive! Every project seems to give me more spares to combine into another, and so on and so forth….
Great custom!
Thank you!
What a lot of work for perfection...hats off to you for this painstaking job....well done.
It looks quite magnificent, especially since it was made from spare parts.
thank you :)
Honestly, this looks like a engine you could say was taken from an abandoned scrapyard, rebuilt and serves on a preserved line. I love it!
Nice work my friend a man after my own heart. I've had some successes and failures, it's how we learn👍✌️🙄😊
I made Saint Benedict (curved footplate) with the Bear's bogie tender (1935 photo evidence), in EM. I used the boiler, cab and part of the footplate from an ancient West Coast cast white metal kit but all the rest I built from scratch, the old way - cutting metal and soldering and referring to Jim Russel's 4mm GWR loco drawings.
Brilliant!! I have a half started Saint project myself. This has fired me up to get going with it again.
Awesome 🤩
That's lovely, nice job 👌
Impressive!
A-Maz-Ing.
Cheers from Canada!
Well done. Great video.
Thank you very much!
I think you did a great job with this project. I did something similar turning a LBSCR E4 model from bachmann into a E3 which involved changing the wheels for smaller ones, modifying the front splashers and adjusting the coupling rods to fit romford wheels.
ooh that sounds like a great bit o'bashin'! Love it
Great job on this! Your videos are therapeutic to watch lol
Thanks so much!
Quality stuff!
Great video- I am amazed there isn’t a RTR model of one of these!
You and me both!
You have done so well. Great Project and an inspiration to many others
Cheers mate!
Cool! It looks so much better than Hornby's take on the Saint!
Thank you!
@@RailwayManiaNetMight need to try one myself lol
I think you have done an incredible job!
Thanks mate!
A well presented video and congratulations with your end result.
Thank you kindly!
Those GBL models are great for slicing up to make better things out of. I don't think that, for the money, especially with all etched plates, that this is too bad a job at all - a thrifty utilisation of damaged models and plastic statics done right. I didn't notice the smokebox height until it was pointed out, I think you'll get away with it. Time to do the WCPR's 2-4-0T 'Clevedon', next? ;)
Mate I would love to do the old Dubs 'No.1 Clevedon'. Will have to think about what donor parts I could scavenge.....
Nice model it actually looks like a official product
Thanks! Guarantee a manufacturer announces one now haha
I would’ve loved for the loco to be Lady Of Legend, but amazing work nonetheless!
Another Hall bites the dust!
hahaha I like to think this one was put to good use ;)
Really nice looking model. As a fellow Clevedon resident, did you know the original name plates now reside in the entrance hall at Clevedon Court itself
I remember seeing them there whilst on a school trip many years ago!
Superb job!..watch someone do a RTR one now !!!!
I cannot believe it hasn’t been announced yet!
Brilliant! Don't worry about the tender(ie 4000 as opposed to 3500gallon) you know that tenders were frequently changed between engines as a matter of course.)
Just a bit of advice on the buffer beams next time, consider thinning your paints and using multiple coats instead of one thick coat. The paint looks a bit thick on those.
Cheers, I did 2 coats but it needs another as there is still a bit of black showing through - it was done after the matt lacquer so it's overly shiny at the moment, both of those things are making it look a little untidy.
This is giving me ideas about building a Star class since the saint and star share a boiler. And while there are RTR stars available they are quite expensive for me still.
Id also like to add that I've been mulling over purchasing a cheap toy train to convert into a model of the Hitachi alstom hs2 bid.
Yeah I think that's a great idea. You could use the Castle chassis without having to chop much off as you'd be able to keep the 4-cylinder front end.
@@RailwayManiaNet but the a new cylinder block would be needed because the stars had slightly smaller cylinders and I would need to get the right frames on the castle donor.
You might be able to file down the cylinder block slightly (it's only half an inch wider in radius as it's 1 inch bigger in diameter, unless you are doing original condition with the smaller cylinders)? I guess it depends which loco you want to represent due to the small detail differences.
amazing model i wouldn't have a clue how to make something like this
Hopefully this guide shows you how you could :)
GWR: The Saint is the ancestor of all our 4-6-0s
Corwin: All the 4-6-0s are the ancestor of my Saint
hahahaha, you're not wrong!
Me here waiting for more sudrian histories updates, mainly focusing on recent model progress
Blimey. If you can do all this, I reckon you can probably do a scratch build.
I find it difficult to make things up from raw materials, for me it's always easier to start with one object to try to turn into another.
love the saints and stars so much. so glad we now have the Lady at Didcot
reckon you'd ever attempt a saint in NWR blue for your sudrian histories project? Maybe Saint Pedroc? :P
Me too! Saint Pedroc is a good one but I think I want to try some more of my own designs for the NWR..... although it'd look great in blue......
@@RailwayManiaNet St. Tibba, the founder of what would become Wellsworth Hospital, would work, too. Not to mention Sodor's patron saint, St. Luoc.
I have had plans on doing one of the Scotts (the Atlantic version of the Saints named after characters by Sir Walter Scott) out of the aforementioned Hornby Saint and converting it to loco drive which has been on the back burner since before the thing that begins with "P" began but had unable to due to how hard it is to get the Hornby Saint.
Yeah to be honest mate I wouldn't even bother with it, you'd have to modify the running board anyway to have the drop-downs and it's dimensionally a bit squiffy. Honestly I think the Castle is a better starting point and they made loads of them. The next one I do will just (hopefully) use Castle and 2800 components without needing the Hall.
I’m American and would love to have a model of 2999 “lady of legend”. But I don’t think I have the skill set to do this plus getting the parts would be hard. I love George Jackson Churchwoods designs It’s just hard to get British models in America.
Gimme that model!!!! I'll turn it into Alled Greedy or 87546 and improve it!!! Gimmeeee!!!!
Wow you should be proud of that....
fantastic build mate love it but i wonder whats next a cathedral??
Already got one haha! I might have a root around in the photo archives and see if I can put together a video on how I did it?
@@RailwayManiaNet crikey a step ahead
Awesome Saint! Did you get the nameplates from Light Railway Stores? I can't seem to find custom curved ones for some reason.
Hello mate, I designed them myself on Adobe Illustrator by putting a Hornby plate in the flatbed scanner and tracing it, then sent the etch sheets off to a company called PPD in Scotland who etched a bit sheet for me.
@@RailwayManiaNet Cool!
Well, looks like he can build his own Saint loco.
like loco also Is your Sodor thing model done?
hey i got a question. where'd you get your custom ethced plates? i've been on the hunt for some gwr style nameplate and numbers to get etched but haven't found a website or anything which could get them done.
I designed them on Adobe Illustrator and had them etched as part of a big sheet by a company called PPD Ltd. Hope that helps!
Alright 👍
Hey, I saw those "Westlin" nameboards... Is there another model you're working on at the moment? Perhaps one we might see in a Sudrian Spotlight?
Hi mate yeah Westlin was (I think) the 4th or 5th loco I made about 8 years ago now, but the custom nameplates are part of a revamp of the model so hopefully it will be on here soon.
@@RailwayManiaNet Nice! I remember seeing pictures of it on one of your sites. Can't wait to see the rebuild!
Hey thats cool! where did you get those name/number plates done?
I’ll try and do a video at some point on how they were done ✅
@@RailwayManiaNet ty!
what do you use as an undercoat on your engines?
Is the next video going to be a sudrian Spotlight
Next one is a podcast, then I think another modelling one (maybe a Sudrian one), then another podcast :)
alright can't wait to see the Podcast Perhaps it will be on a preserved loco
who did the etched nameplates? or was it a custom job?
I designed them in Illustrator and sent it off to PPD who did the etchings. I got the size by putting a Hornby nameplate in the flatbed scanner and tracing over the image. I might do a guide on designing basic etches at some point if it's of interest?
@@RailwayManiaNet Would like a how to on that, I need to get started on a Christmas layout, saint Nick, 2512 etc and some others. It'll be for next year now though.
That's such a good idea. Why didn't I think of that?!
@@RailwayManiaNet Been thinking of it for a few years, Hornby's Santa express just isn't up to the job😋
@@RailwayManiaNet would love that.. I’m currently doing some Thomas customs and I need some custom etched nameplates for them
NOOOOOO EARL BATHURST
poor thing :(
Lol
@@RailwayManiaNet not nice smh
@@Shed87AProductions I'm sure the world will cope with one fewer £10 static model that came with a magazine.
@@RailwayManiaNet ye atleast I've seen the real one
The real 5051 is my favourite locomotive, would quite like to convert a Hornby Castle to 'The Earl' in her 2003 Torbay Express condition
Pls show us ben again and the nephews on him and bill
Welcome Back! So nice to see you upload again, hope you've been doing well in the last few months. Honestly nice to see a Western loco in BR Lined Black, the Saint here looks real sharp! Have A Happy Thanksgiving!
Thanks Jared, really nice of you to say :) hope you have a nice time too!
We're not worthy...
Awww you are too kind
