    How to fix 2003 Dodge Cummins P0483 P2509 won't start . The fan clutch is the problem. It will often times start if you unplug the fan clutch plug located on the passenger side of the bottom of the radiator. Once the fan clutch gets bad enough it causes the Engine Control Module to not power up. This causes the no start condition as well as a Diagnostic Link Connector to not communicate. Cycling the key three times will still give you codes on the odometer though.

    Thank you for this video! After spending all day randomly looking at diagnostic videos to figure out what could be causing our cummins to crank, not start, have no fuel pump priming, and a diagnostic tool to not connect, I stumbled upon your video and realized that the fan clutch we just put in (along with a new alternator) could be our culprit.. Sure enough we unplugged the new fan clutch and the truck fired right up and the diagnostic tool connects to the ECM! Everything else seemed to point into the direction of the ECM being faulty.. so glad we didn't have to replace it! Never would've thought that the fan clutch having faulty electronics would totally disable our rig..

    My 2003 is throwing 6 codes! Had to jump it to start it. When it would run the volts would drop to nothing. Ended up buying 2 new batteries and changed out the alternator/generator(

    @Jolinator The way the computer powers up... you can some times unplug it, plug it back in and then get where you need to be. It won't wipe it out while running, it'll just not re start. This one was hosed with no re start.

    @evildesl It takes a TON of fuel pressure to start those initially. You have one or more bad injectors that's leaking disallowing enough pressure to start.

    @zrultima Check the trans fluid level. If it gets 2qts low or more it may go into "safe mode" including hard shifts and no overdrive.

  • @briansmobile1
    @briansmobile1  12 років тому

    @kanepit047 You need to try starting fluid to by-pass fuel system. If that doesn't work check for spark and injector pulse.

    @SWAMPBUSTERS1 Right. P0700 means computer wiring is chopped or disconnected. P0483 is the fan clutch non communication. I'd check for blown fuses and get fixing the wiring you are aware of.

    the comment about how to get the code was VERY helpful. TY! Was glad to know the truck need not be running to know if the clutch fan is gone or not.
    I have never done this job before, and made the fool mistake of not first watching a number of videos on how to do it before I foolishly started removing the fan bolts and the pulley bolts, making it impossible to remove either, and making for myself a FUUNNNN time trying to replace them UGHGHHH!
    Just kick me, Self!

    @djweszone BS? Beautiful Success.... it works fast without spending on specialty tools that clutter your toolbox and rarely get used. The bite marks made me a critic at first, but some won't come off even with the air hammer. That's when I tried this out of desperation and it came right off. That was 6 years ago. Now I go straight to this method. The air hammer and kit I have/used was a Cornwell at 150 psi.

  • @briansmobile1
    @briansmobile1  12 років тому

    @zrultima Ok, today I have time to answer. This electric fan clutch is controlled by the computer instead of a two layer metal spring that reacts to temperature. IT has a lot of current draw compared to other components. (too much in my opinion) When it fails it can throw the computer into fail safe mode or create other kinds of glitchy havoc. Another possibility is that one of your eyelets that goes to the + - cable ends got swapped in polarity and did the same thing a shorted fan would.

  • @briansmobile1
    @briansmobile1  13 років тому

    @bradbodigon As a general rule you NEVER use ether on these. It's really hard on them due to a lack of lubrication that the diesel fuel would normally supply/provide. STAR, STAR STAR IMPORTANT If you unplug it, it may reset and start for you.

  • @briansmobile1
    @briansmobile1  13 років тому

    @moofushu Yours is a more common and better design. It's based on temperature like an engine thermostat is. You have a spring that is made from two different kinds of metal that react to heat. Yours is a "fan clutch" because it has a clutch that engages and disengages. Google a video on thermostat boil demonstration. It will make more sense.

    Enjoy your watching your programs I like how you explain things , I do have a question about my 2003 Dodge cummins 5.9 it has around 150k and It getting long starts, It just started doing this about 2 months ago , I first thought it the winter and diesel's are cold natured anyway. But we have had a few weeks of warm weather 50's and 60's even has been is the low 70's and the truck still takes awhile to start. could this be because of the fuel injector? I see a lot of diesel fuel injector cleaner on the market, That you add to a tank of fuel and burn it as you go. Have you used any of these and are they worth wasting time and money on? I know you cant diagnose my problem without looking at the truck, I was just wanted to pick your brain about my thought process. I'm going to replace air filter and fuel filter just as a first step Not sure how often fuel injectors need to be cleaned and if the fuel cleaner that you add to the tank works or not. I have watched a few videos on line about removing the fuel injectors for a hands on cleaning it looks very straight forward . If decide to do this task I will only remove one at a time for servicing that way if I destroy one I have only one to purchase . BTW I have only one error code on the truck that is P0633 which is about the Key immobilizer which the local dodge dealer said at one point the truck was started and the computer got a bad reading from the chip in the key . I know way this is happening a few years ago someone tried to steal my truck which the immobilizer did its job and didn't start for theses guys. but ever since that event I now can start my truck and while the truck is running remove the key and lock the doors this is great for winter warm ups. So the p0633 code is from my winter warm up runs . I was also thinking I need to check fuel pressure at the fuel rail. Sorry for being so long can you think of anything else I need to check? BTW I do not plug in my truck when its cold we rarely get below 20 degrees. Any thoughts you have would be great Really enjoy your channel you have shown me things that have made working on my cars and trucks easier and save me money. THANK YOU !

    @Hermanvogel I'm like you- I REALLY DIDN'T LIKE the chisel idea when I was taught it seven years ago. I didn't like the marring to the nut or the hammer concept. Having used it for seven years I find it doesn't adversely affect operation or longevity of the pump or fan clutch. AND no one cares what the fan clutch nut looks like and it's ready to go the next time.

I want this machine to crank, but it will not. I do have the P2509 code on my scanner tool. I also have B210D, U0184, C2100, but not the P0483. Computer controlled injection. When you push start it, it thinks it's already running. When you key start it, the computer refuses to add fuel till certain conditions are met ie. a certain pressure level. It's to protect the truck. Diesel isn't just a fuel. It's also a lubricating oil too.

    Hey man awesome video, but quick question for you. I got a P0483 code on my 05 cummins as well, says cooling fan speed. I got it while i was hard on the gas, and another time cruising around easy. And I have a Smarty JR in my truck and it will set it back to stock and untill i reprogram then it clears the code. Do you feel this is what i need to do to fix it? Not sure what my egts are bc my gauges arent hooked up yet. But i honestly dont beat the truck. Its my daily driver. Thanks!

  • @briansmobile1

    You have one or more leaking injectors inhibiting it from getting enough pressure to even TRY injection for start up.

    I just changed my fan clutch on my ford ranger. I never changed one before and it wasn't too bad. Mine didn't have an electrical connection at all. Just was wondering if you could tell me how it works without any connections to it?

    Question...on my 05 cummins 5.9.....ok so my wires aren't cut and the clutch is still functioning correctly, my truck threw code P0480 and PO483 the first is fan 1 control circuit the second is fan rationality check....As my bullydog programmer says and the Dodge digital tachometer also....but can I just repair the wires? Or buy just the wires with new plugs/ new pigtail? Any help would be awesome. Thanks

    my question is this.. My 03 cummins has not be starting at all lately. But no codes. I was told the injectors were bad. Cahnged those. Truck ran great for a week.. Then it went back to no start. the only way to start is with a wiff of starting fluid on the air filter and it will fire everytime. once its been running for awhile it will start up no problem. but let it cool more than 2 hours and your quick starting again. Could it have something to do with the fan? i dont here it

    Awesome video, thank you for the help. But my truck has other ideas...Replaced the fan, started the truck, it ran but very rough, idled for about ten minutes as I checked to make sure I had no loose wires. Shut off the truck, left it for twenty minutes to let my wife know the good news, started it again, this time ran smooth as a Cummins should and always has, tested the trailer hookup plug (rewired a while back and wanted to use this weekend) everything tested great shut off the truck went inside to change clothes to pick up that wife for lunch, back out to the truck, will turn over and will not start again, back to a P0483 code, help if you can. Easy question I hope is I have a P0483 code should I still get the lift pump hum waiting for the pigtail to go out?

    1st 2004 24v 5.9 Cummins I've owned. I bought at auction with plow damn good deal 1350.00 with 150k on motor. haha stole it.... but it threw codes 0483 0480 0720 0500 2509 ect.. I might have screwed some codes up.. also limp mode. I replaced rear speed sensor and output speed sensor. also realizing fan clutch was from ford.. mechanical .. I guess guys are swapping them out to avoid wire slashing. but I changed it all back codes are gone. also replace all grounds I could and battery terminals. what's your take on them changing to mechanical fan clutches. I would think electric better? any how I cut and extend all wires away from blades /rerouted an shielded. my speed sensor didnt go out yet any suggestions. I'm gonna pull rear again an make sure nothing stick in to it an change fluid. thanks for all your info & sorry so long.

      p0weraid You may, Your fan isn't getting enough air wash over the condenser based on what you've described. That could be debris like dead birds, straw, you name it behind the condenser, but is likely a bad fan.
