It's terrible
If Barre had waited for the collapse of the Derg, Somalia’s history could’ve been very different.
i completely agree with you, He went to quickly
But would the Derg have fallen to EPLF and TPLF? if it wasn’t caught up in the Ogaden war , I don’t think so
@@robb3342 Absolutely right!
@@robb3342 The only reason the TPLF was able to topple the Derg was because of CIA involvement. The CIA kidnapped Mengistu when he was flying back to the capital after visiting the front. He got to chose if he wants to live out his days in captivity or being able to flee to Zimbabwe where he lives to this day. The news came out that he fled and the soldiers on the front line gave up the fighting. The TPLF then marched into the capital without a shot being fired.
@@ibrahimmekonnen8259 I agree they where in no shape or form to win the only reason the Derg failed is because socialism failed
Been studying the Portuguese wars in Africa. Have read numerous books on the subject and just got four more for my birthday the other day. It just simply amazes me that the small country of Portugal fought 3 wars at the same time from 1961-1974 in Angola, Mozambique and Guinea. A number years ago I went to Portugal and visited their military memorial to the conflicts listing the names of the soldiers killed in the conflicts.
The Portuguese also helped ethiopia defeat the ottomans
As a Portuguese I can tell you there's still a lot of family trauma about those dark years.
@@laloelsalamanca that is what tends to happen when you oppress an entire ethnicity.
@@tiii4017 Yes, trauma goes both ways and is a consequence of a relation of centuries in which that "ethnicity" was a tribal culture that used to sell rival tribe members for slavery.
@@laloelsalamanca Africa was far from the first to practice ethnic slavery, go back to mainland Europe in Antiquity. The slavs practically got their name from getting pushed around by everyone else.

Good video. I didn't learn anything new, but was reminded of the conflict. It unfolded from my youth and I followed it avidly. My grandfather was an avid reader even though he was not highly educated. He migrated from rural Greece to the US and became quite successful. He got me reading the National Geographic, which I subscribed to for decades. I remember the Ogaden.
On a more contemporary note I had a college professor who was from Eretria. At first, he was loath to talk about where he was from, but I got him to open up, He left because of the communist oppression there. The beat goes on.
As a Somali i can tell you from speaking to actual Somalis who fought in that war, they never wanted to withdraw but were ordered by the Barre regime, this was the cause of the chaotic in fighting during the war, the Somalis wanted to die rather than retreat. As result of this 'humiliation' attributed to government leadership the somali clans waged war against them upon returning to Somalia leading to what Somalia has become today. It is also worth noting the Somalis did not completely withdraw, many stayed behind with the Western Somali Liberation Front (now the Ogaden Liberation Front) and continued to wage guerilla warfare, up until just a few years ago, Ogaden has always been an effectively 'no-go zone' for the Ethiopian military. Even though victory is claimed on paper, the reality on the ground is always messy, and with the Ogaden it was completely ungovernable nor occupied after the Somali army withdrew. Something important worth noting following the 'conclusion' of that war.
As an Ethiopian and as a man who lived there..your claim that the ogaden eas no go zone for the military is completely wrong. During the first few years of the new regime Eprdf there were some concerning activities but not to the extent u talk about it. But after few years in power it was infact the most peacefull region except for pocket incident specially the attack on foreign contractors there.. this was the only notable incident for about years after the war. Infact one of the largest military base of the eastern command is located there.

Thank you so much for making this video. Just discovered your channel and now I'm subbed. As an African myself (Nigerian, specifically) it always annoys me when most people only attribute Africa's current problems to "colonialism or racism", effectively removing personal responsibility of us Africans, and ignore more important factors like geography, climate, socioeconomic systems, political unity, corruption, and leadership. Thanks for focusing on those areas and being more objective in your video.

@@Bell_plejdo568p The CIA and America are also involved in much of Africa and yet countries like Rwanda, Botswana, Kenya, Namibia, Ghana, Tunisia, Morocco, Ethiopia and a few others are doing better socio-economically. @@orboakin8074 Very well said. Both your statements.
@@Historylover-ho6lg thanks, friend.
Well if you studied the history than you’d realize the downfall of literally every country in Africa was due to colonialism and when most of African nations first got independence they did so under the guises of African socialism until a nation ran by capitalism gets involved so they dont fully separate themselves from capitalism and they replace the socialist leader with a dictator who’s a slave to capitalist nations. Just look at the history of every country you named, when they all got their independence, their leaders were implementing socioeconomic developments that greatly helped the nation until they were eventually murdered and replaced. If you’re a true African you would know geography and climate has nothing to do with the success of the nation considering places like Dubai are among the wealthiest in the world regardless of its geography and climate. Also you claim this effect me removes personal responsibility of Africans. What exactly was the average African supposed to do while their leader was being assisted and replaced by a dictator?

We will never forget or forgive all those who abandoned us in the struggle to liberate our western Somali brothers and sisters. I’m not huge supporter of Siad Barre but he had every right to liberate all Somali lands given away by colonial Europeans. Before everyone lectures me about achieving this through war. In 1960 when both British and Italian Somali lands united to form the Somali republic all those other Somalis in Ethiopia and Kenya voiced their desire to join the newly formed Somalia but were persecuted for it indiscriminately. Ethiopia nor Kenya would have conceded these territories even if a referendum was held and all Somalis voted to leave. This is a very interesting, and sad, episode of African history. Non-ethnic borders have caused an enormous amount of (mostly intrastate) violence in Africa. This was one of the few exceptions, where a state decided on irredentist expansion, against the will of the continental leaders of the time. In fact, there are excerpts from speeches by heads of state and government during the 1963 Addis Abbaba meeting (available online), which was the Founding meeting of OAU, where one can read the bitter Somali accusations and the prompt, hostile response of the Ethiopian host (the Kenyans, who also held a part of Somali populated area in Northern Province, and fought a 'shifta war' against 'bandits', remained silent). Perhaps sadly, sanctity of African borders was preserved, leading to a small number of inter-state, but large number of intrastate, wars (which were often just as brutal, as in Nigeria-Biafra conflict).

Thanks for this insightful documentary! One thing I would have wished to see was the role Kenya played in the conflict. Previously, HIM Haille Selasie had signed a mutual defence pact with Jomo Kenyatta, all aimed at combating Somali nationalism. Between 1963 and 64, Kenya was embroiled in a war with Somalis who wanted to bring the Somali-dominated North Eastern Province into Somalia. When Selassie was captured and killed by the Derg, Kenya did not come to his aid. By the time the Ogaden war started in 1977, Kenyatta was ailing (he died a year later, in August 1978) and his government showed no interest in coming to Ethiopia's aid. Only a few years later, Kenyatta's successor, Moi, oversaw the ethnic cleansing of Somalis (Wagalla Massacre). In response, Siad Barre threatened to invade and occupy Kenya. To date, Kenya's North Eastern Province remains the most volatile region. It would be very interesting to learn what President Kenyatta's regime was up to as the Ogaden War raged on.
Am a Somali in NEP of Kenya. Your claim of volatility in the region is far from the truth. We feel as Kenyan as any other Kenyans feel. Stop your drama.

I believe your information is loaded a one side because you did not mention the suffering of Ethiopia in the war and the soldiers who died. How ever my country isn't easy🇸🇴🇸🇴💪
Tanzania was also a socialist state. With its Mao/Stalist version of Communism they almost did a African holodomor/Great Chinese Famine if not for Western aid and trade. The Tanzanias also where very pro-China. Having close relations, Tanzania recongized Biafra on China's behalf since China supported them aswell as invaded Uganda will Chinese guns, tanks, and recently purchased fighter jets.
What a tragic history. The people are suffering to this day. I appreciate that this history did not tell us who were the 'good' and 'bad' guys, just what they did. I appreciate that.

Barre may have been a good general. But he was a terrible diplomat.
Wars are won not just with Generalship but also effective diplomacy
He was not a good general, and indeed all thd good commanders were either killed or escaped to join or form rebel groups
True, Castro was furious that Barre refused his peace plan and then launched his invasion.
@@vonzipper7854 it wasn't a peace plan but a silly dream of a horn of Africa confederation based on communism rather than a real peace plan.
Ignoring the real ancient and justifiable hatreds of the horn, for the new communist man would solve everything /s.
@@vonzipper7854 Castro was an imbecile. Somalia is a majority Muslim country while Ethiopia at that time was majority Christian. There is a long history of war in the region as well. Why in the hell would Somalia ever unite with Ethiopia or Eritrea. The differences are massive. It's like uniting UK and France under one country. It is impossible.
@@lt2672 Maybe Castro wanted them to unite to cut off the Red Sea from the West and around that time the USSR were wanting to build a missile in Somalia. I agree with you but a Communist like Castro was a true believer. A really good soft cover book on this war is Wings Over the Ogaden it's very informative and covers all aspects of the war in great depth.
At that time Eritrea was not independent, it was later (1990 i think) that it separated from Ethiopia after years of war. Very interesting and helpful series about a seldom mentioned topic. thank you
As an Ethiopian, I am grateful for the support cubans and soviets provided to us when we were weak. Now we are much stronger than our east african counterparts. We will never forget their contributions❤

Idk I wouldn't call Barre a communist, he may of been influenced by it but his ideology was "scientific socialism" of course in practice it was just a military dictatorship. Many similar regimes in Africa embraced "socialism" as a means to get backing from the USSR or China.
Siad Barre was a Marxist Leninist and the Somali Revolutionary Socialist party was a communist party.
@@imperator692 He might of said he was at first but in practice he wasn't. Especially after the Ogaden war when he turned to clan and tribal politics to keep power. He used clan rivalries to his advantage and rewarded those loyal to him. A legacy of division that still effects Somalia today.
@Forrest Anderson That's not true, Somalia was a socialist country in name and in practice. The economy was socialised, agriculture modernised, industry build and the workers and peasants had democratic control over their economic and political lives.
Will you guys be making videos on the Congo Wars?

Will you do a video about the Ethiopian Civil War and the Tigray war?
Angola was av3 way fight between MPLA FNLA and UNITA. MPLA grabbed power and stopped free elections. FNLA folded quite early but civil war with UNITA continued for years with outside involvement by Cuba and South Africa
With Angola Namibia and Mozambique gaining independence and Apartheid SA falling into further economic malaise and collapsed
I knew of soviet help but didn't expect betrayal from Yemen xD
What proxy war in the 1960s in Pakistan & Afghanistan are you referring to? I couldn't find a reference to that in Wikipedia.
During our internal conflict said bare thought he can take Ethiopian people and land. What a big mistake. Ethiopian come together to fight the invader. My uncle, my brother in law, and my older brother was among the people who fought for our Country. I am very proud of them. Long live Ethiopian.
Baseless pride, did they return home, most Cubans didn't,did they?
That is exactly why ethiopia can not have longterm peace, imperialism does not work, its a timed bomb that can explode at anytime. See who is fighting ethiopia today? Who is commiting war crimes, who is creating ethnic wars ? Ethiopia today do not need pride of imperialism, it should unlearn it and move on to take care of their ppl. Here, ethiopian youth are suffering, they sleep in the street, some beg for food, some sell drugs. Ethiopia like the rest of us africans failed their youth.

It's interesting learning more context about the ogaden. My Grandad, who was from nearby South Yemen, was deployed in this war and was awarded ethiopian citizenship for his contribution to the War.

your grandad was a snake.
@ibrahim hassan No he was not, us Yemenis love our Somali brothers, but we have closer historic connection to Ethiopia as the Habesha are descendants from us Yemenis from the time of the kingdom of Sheba and they are fellow Semites. Also, Somalia are the ones who started the war when they sensed Ethiopia were vulnerable.

Great video! My only issue is that the description of Salazar as a 'fascist dictator' isn't particularly accurate. Salazar was an authoritarian leader, there's no denying that, but he held distain for fascism as it was found in Franco's Spain. The Estado Novo was opposed to socialism, fascism -and- liberal democracy, occupying its own unique zone on the political spectrum.
calling salazar not fascist is like calling Venezuela not socialist, useless pedantry
Salazar was influenced by Mussolini but he never built a massive cult of personality for himself. Also his regime was not a "revolutionary" mass movement. Salazar essentially wanted to keep Portugal in this form of stasis stuck in time. He also banned the actual Portuguese fascist party.

You missed a lot ngl. Prior to the invasion, the Derg had purged a lot of senior and mid ranking officers of the Ethiopian army. Others took up arms against the Derg. The Ethiopian military was divided, and therefore weak. The Derg also had to contend with the with the escalating violence in other parts of the country namely, Eritrea and Northern Ethiopia. It was thoroughly unprepared for a battle against another state. Great respect and love to the Cubans who died fighting for Ethiopia.
That is true

You mean the Cubans who died fighting to expand Communist repression and mass murder.

One of the most ghoulish things about the western de-colonialists is that they had no intention of decolonizing Africa. They just wanted to to change from western imperialism to western Marxism. The actual cultures and traditions of Africans were to be ignored.
Europeans, just like any global power, put their interests first. Its however behooves the enslaved to fight those shackles and put their nation’s interest first.
