    Really no mention of the Communist Soviet Union arming both Ethiopia and Somalia to the teeth and both of these African nations were Socialist, but at this time the Russians viewed Ethiopia as a bigger prize and tried to talk Somalia out of invading the Ogedon. The Ogaden war was a success as the Somali national army reclaimed all of the Somali territory in Ethiopia. However like you stated in the video the Soviet Union abandoned Somalia and sided with Ethiopia. They didn’t just provide equipment but intelligence, war tactics with the help of Soviet generals and even provide manpower by involving other communist nations like Cuba, South Yemen and Libya who all sent soldiers to help Ethiopia fight Somalia. One more important point to keep in mind is after the war the Ethiopian government started funding and training clan militias especially SNM and SSPF both in northern Somalia to divide and destroy Somalia from within. All of this could have been avoided if Somalis in Ethiopia and Kenya were allowed to chose their own path after independence. Both these communities were marginalised and oppressed for wanting to unite with Somalia. Also in Djibouti the french held a rigged referendum as the majority of Somalis wanted to unite with Somalia with the minority Afars voting against uniting with a larger ethnic group. Greater Somalia will happen its just matter of when as its supported by majority of all Somalis in different regions like me. My family is from northern Somalia (Somaliland state). The UN/US forces intervention was an absolute disaster and unnecessary. Yes, Somalis were starving and fighting in the 1990s but a Nation will eventually solve its own problems by itself with time independently. Unfortunately, when you throw in foreign intervention and interests in another country the war becomes much more complicated and peace becomes an unattainable dream. Had the intervention not come to Somalia things would probably have been very different today.
    If the UN really just wanted to feed starving Somalis there were more subtle and better ways to do it rather than armed boots on the ground.

      What a load of bullshit, look at the history of any nation and you'll see that a lot of war had to happen before things settled down, it's the way things are. People don't just magically coexist, and we have some tens of thousands of years worth of warfare in our past to prove it, but somehow people like you still love to spew your pacifist garbage, even though it goes against all logic.
      If people like you had their way every nation would simply bleed out over time, and nothing would ever change because you're afraid to sacrifice to make things better for the next generation.

    • @wolfu597
      @wolfu597 2 роки тому +8

      The reason why US Marines and UN soldiers were sent to Somalia was because the local warlords were seizing the food shipments meant for the starving civilian population, and instead used it to feed their armies.
      The outcome of the intervention is regrettable, I agree, but would you sit by and not do anything? At hindsight, it's easy too see that the UN should have left things alone, but at the time, people around the world wanted to help the starving civilians, especially the children.

    • @Handle0108
      @Handle0108 2 роки тому +8

      @@wolfu597 true, hindsight is 20/20
      But still, at the time there were only two main relevant warlords: Farah Aidid and Ali Mahdi who were fighting over the south of the country. Aidid had the most weapons because he was a former general and had a large portion of the former army behind him. In other words, peace could only be achieved through Aidid.
      However, the UN/US forces instead decided to hunt Aidid killing thousands of innocents in the process which angered his forces and turned the Somali population against the US/UN intervention, this lead to things like Black hawk down and the pull out of UN/US forces from Somalia leading to a big crisis which left the country much worse than before the intervention.
      Not to mention that with Aidid dead and not being able to take back control of the country, the remaining state institutions collapsed and the Somalian military dispersed into different factions and warlords. All order and respect for the government authority died there, and no group has been able to create a functioning government ever since. There was a time when it would take one broadcast from Radio Mogadishu to calm the whole country, and one police officer would bring order to a whole town but now people couldn’t care less until you roll in tanks to their front door.
      I believe that a great opportunity was lost when the US/UN decided to take matters into their own hands and naively involve themselves in the Somali civil war which was not theirs to fight.

    • @arthas640
      @arthas640 Рік тому

      unlikely. The country had too many factions fighting one another, even united coalitions and governments regularly had factions infighting or splitting off, the country is and was deeply divided along tribal lines, and the country has serious issues with jihadists and islamists sowing chaos. The civil war is less like the American Civil War with 2 factions fighting and more like the Yugoslav wars with factions breaking off and fighting one another, only in Somalia there arent neat lines to split ethnic groups off since people often have loyalty to tribal lines or religious sects which are all intermingled.

    One is often confused when looking at the internal struggles in Africian nations. Definitely in the post World War two era of independence from the colonial powers, old tribal and cultural divisions and mistrust worked their way to the surface and caused conflict which led to armed insurections and infighting. Not even communist or socialist ideologies could address or put a band aid on the divisions which had by then regressed to tribalism and its antagonism between the groups for control and power. Even strong dictatorships that arose fell in disarray. External forces like the US led intervention and the UN could only exert some control for a short while. It has been rule by the barrel of the gun for some time. A chaotic old western movie type scene of armed groups engaged in the occasional fire fights and no governmental enforced legal structures and law enforcement prevails. Unfortunately the people in Somalia will have to sort out the situation themselves, until common live and let live attitudes create a new low violence norm and discussions to sort out the mess can gain ground.

    Africa as a hole seems to suffer from a very common problem. There have not traditionally been centralized governments. So like the sub-states of Europe in the 1800s, and every other society in history they are having a hard time working out borders that conform to the various peoples of the continent. European colonialism in Africa, like in the Middle East thru to India, used a policy of divide and conquer, splitting ethnic populations down the middle then matching two or more antagonistic factions into a single "country" that was constantly at odds with itself, making it easier for the colonial power to oversee. The long term result after the colonies collapsed is what we see now, countries that are unnatural trying to establish a central government with no historical experience in shared power, coupled with environmental changes and an overall world tendency towards right wing "my way only" attitudes and policies. (See Hungary, USA, France, Russia, etc)

For example, in Ukraine it's Slavic Ukrainians vs Slavic Russians, in the US it's Republicans vs democracy, in France it's Center vs Right, Iraq sets Sunni vs Shiite, India/Pakistan sets Muslims vs Hindus, Sri Lanka just dissolved its government, etc

    Somalia under Siad Barre was heading in the right direction, improving the lives of citizens and having built a strong army and a centralized government until Barre decided to invade Ethiopia. Every Somali tells you that was his greatest mistake and a turning point for Somalia and the main reason why Somalia is struggling to have a functioning central government until today. After his army was defeated by Ethiopia with the support of the eastern block, the Ethiopians trained and supported different warlords and helped Somaliland to separate from Somalia. Consecutive Ethiopian governments made sure Somalia was divided and weak so it will never be a threat again. If Barre didn’t start the war against Ethiopia the story of Somalia would have been very different and bright. Don’t ever start a war, for every war has its own life and you would never know how it will end.

    British somaliland has been peaceful since it declared independence and is democratic. One theory suggests that the reason for this is because it was a protectorate, not a colony. Britain didnt interfere with the local culture and life in contrast to Italian Somaliland which was a full colony. Thus Somalis in the north retained their traditional ways of sorting disputes whereas in the south the Italians tried to impose the Italian way. So when the colonial powers left it didnt cause much of a mess in the north because they were already self governing for the most part. Another African country which had little social interference from its colonial master was the British "protectorate" in Botswana. Today Botswana is one of the few sub-saharan countries which is fully democratic, peaceful, has one of the highest literacy rates on the continent and a decent economy.

    Those colonial borders are basically the source of all the political turbulence in Somalia because it disrupted the delicate natural power balance amongst the clans thereby creating instability within the body politic in the country. They can't have a functional state with half its polity excluded and still be stable and the issue of reunification with the Ogaden, NFD and the Somali part of Djibouti was a burning issue for independence movements pre independence and all governments post independence if it fails the only solution for the current Somali state is it's dissolution into clan states which might affect even the former British Somaliland which might break down into 3 states.

    • @arthas640

      Somalia's borders today included multiple single states. The Majeerteen Sultanate included most of Somalia and existed before colonization and the Omani empire directly controlled most of the major cities along the coast. Somalia would have issues no matter the map since their ethnic/tribal/clan groups are so spread out and intermingled it makes clean borders nearly impossible without carrying out some serious population redistribution. Even in cities like Mogadishu you've got multiple groups all together. A lot of the political divisions are due to ethnic/tribal/clan divisions.

      European countries are already developed, it’s no surprise that throwing an educated European will improve an underdeveloped African country. It has nothing to do with whether they are white or not, it’s their knowledge, attitude and upbringing which makes the difference. If you threw a European from the Middle Ages or Stone Age in Africa they would improve nothing, so I don’t see your point really.

    The Ogaden war wasnt a defeat but a win for the Somalis and a retreat after Soviet sided with Ethiopia and Usa drew from supporting the barre regime.
