Can’t believe you skipped over the assassination of Mohamed Boudiaf on live tv….I was a young child in constantine during the civil war, I remember the curfews and stories of massacres around the country…but somehow we still managed to have moments of joy and love, it wasn’t complete mayhem all the time but my parents didn’t see much of a future and decide to migrate out of the country, I dream of a more prosperous time for Algeria, hopefully it will happen in my life time.
You managed to have moments of joy because it was NOT a civil war. I lived through the years of terrorism, and it wasn't a war. It was unsafe, and a lot of people suffered and got killed by terrorists. The west wanted to called "Civil war" this guy gets his info second hand.
I'm an American in my teens at the time and had no idea about this happening. I only became aware of this while reading The Great War for Civilization by Robert Fisk in the mid 2000s.

I was born in 2001 in Algeria so i missed most of the period, all we hear is the stories from our parents and relatives, a notable one is that my uncle was in the GIA and my auntie's Husband was a liberal journalist and that made them turn against each other , i felt it when he mentioned the Arab spring i remember when all of the other countries were protesting and everyone here were afraid that protests may plunge us into civil war again.
The govt shoudl've never left the socialist orientation it had since the independance.
The islamists we fought in the 90's were the very same that the Russians (soviets) fought in Afghanistan. They came back way more radicalized from the war in Afghanistan, the Russians warned the govt, as they were facing the same phenomenon in Chechnya.
These bloody americans did all they could to undermine secular socialist arab leaders in algeria in favour of Islamists wahhabist scums.

I am from India, and conflicts like the Yugoslav wars and the Algerian civil war is a cautionary tale for a country as ethnically and religiously diverse as mine.

I'd advise reading Revolutions and Dictatorships: The Violent Origins of Durable Authoritarianism by Lucan Ahmed Way which have a dedicated chapter to Algeria and why following the social revolution, compromises led to a more fragile state compared to other places and eventually the civil war.

My mom grew up during that time and apparently the violence got so bad at times that she would see dead people on the street on her way to school. She also witnessed someone getting shot in the head while she was with her friend. Inshallah my country will heal from that horrible time and we can build it up to be better than before❤

We all spotted some mistakes there (although altogether it's an interesting video, thank you for taking the time to make it):
1) the cause of the tensions in 1975 wasn't the refusal of access to the Atlantic ocean coast, it was Algeria's support of the independence of WS and the Polisario, and the refusal of the illegal annexation by the Kingdom of Morocco, something that has angered the Moroccan authorities, but it would never have escalted to war.
2) The group you ention wasn't the Palestinian group Hamas lead by Abu Hania, but another group with a similar sounding name, so i understand the confusion.
3) Boumediene didn't just die, he was poisoned, otherwise he was in perfect shape.
4) the estimate of deaths is around 400000 killed.
5)things that weren't mentioned:
-Boudiaf was murdered on live TV.
-the FIS used the doctrine/sect of Khawareej and were supported by foreign countries.
-the meaning of the title? (no but seriousely, where in the video is the title explained lol)
-I'm curious to see the sources for the "Semaine sanglante"? what's that? I've never heard of such a thing.

I also heard from an algerian who was a kid at that time that there were foreign action taken to spread un cohesion among the “terror” groups by committing assasination and massacres amd attributing those actions to them.

@@Swindoon butin reality, Farhat Abbas never promised Morocco anything ,if you check out their treaty, they simply agreed to settle the borders after independence, but seeing that we had a weak army in 1963 (just after liberation) they wanted to take the opportunity to take us out, before we had a chance to get stronger ,and to invade Tindouf and bechar (that were never theirs to start with: false historical claim, like with Mauritania and WS) Not to mention that Morocco actually betrayed us during the Algerian war, they were the reason the war extended for 8 years bcz of the 6 leaders plane highjacking. And if everybody who helped us got a piece of land, we would be left with Algiers size of a country lol (and Morocco would take a small baladiya at most, they sucked at helping Algeria but were very helpful to France)
My father when he was 19 was from the first responders to the massacre of "ben tallha" , to this day he throws up randomly and have frequent nightmares from the incident remembering the horrors he witnessed

It's more complicated than secular vs islamists. Firstly in the Algerian state constitution's Islam is the state religion. Boumediene did a "non secular" revolution inspired by the socialist era, but was still adamant about Algeria being a muslim country. There's an Islamic assembly in government, separated from the general assembly. So no the state is not really secular like westerners think of secularism.
While Algeria was and is a Muslims country there is a spectrum

The government is secular and in place because of France. All Muslim countries would be ruled by Islam if western forces weren’t protecting tyrannical or corrupt secular leaders instead

My father left Algeria in 1990s after the situation of extremism got worse, his proffesor in the university he was attending, got behaded by some terrorist which was becoming very often.
They would just throw the body parts on the streets, just for people to find them.
One of my uncles was in the Algerian army at that point, one day he was on a balcony in a militay barack when a bomb blew right under it,he feel two stories down, luckily surviving.
For my father and other uncle this was enough so they left the country and imigrated to Germany.

The Algerian Civil War was one of the least studied wars despite the fact that it is way more relevant to the War on Terror and the Arab Spring than the sugarcoated Battle of Algiers or the worthless debate between terrorist/Freedom Fighter rhetorics.
It showed the future of Africa. I saw an article written in 1991 by a think tank describing exactly what is happening today. Very uncanny.

My grand father was a corporal in the FLN and was part of the ALN too, he joined it after he saw how French rule has destroyed their lives and dominated the country for all these years, this came after my grand grand father came back from WW2, drafted by the French and just dying some days after he came back.
He had a pretty high position in the Army, having the job to spy on French miltary positions in Oran an reporting them back to the leadership.
His days were nealy done after he got into a heavy firefight with the French, after a traitor informed the French Army about his location, he got shot with one bullet in his throat and two his left leg, for some miracle he survived after some fellow comarades found him in a ditch loosing blood and brought him into a hospital, partially recovering in 2 weeks.
He had to flee tho, because the French army found out where he was.
The only think i still know abt him being a soldier in the FLN is that he burned all his documents after the war because he taught that the indepandance was a trick, so the Army can locate all the other resitance groups and eradicate them.
He unforunatley died in 2015because due to injuries in a quad mtv accident in 2013.
He is still a Legend for me and hes the reason why i am where i am right now, may he rest in peace.

@@ad3l547 On my mothers side, they were forced out of their homes,by armed soldiers to do things they didn't want to. If they didn't agree with them, they were imprisoned or executed.
And in the Algerian war, on my mothers side they bombed my grandmother's village aswell imprisoned innocent civilians and on my father's side my grandmother experienced how 5 family members were shot even tho they were innocent.
She also had to hide in a water well whilst being her village was bombarded.
They lived at that time and if they say their life's were not good because there was an occupying army treating them like third class humans, then they have the right to say that.
And just for a reality check, since the colonization of 1830, 5.6 million Algerians were killed.

I remember reading about the conflict in Algeria during the Nineties and feeling horrified at the frequent massacres. It was so tragic . Thankfully Algeria came through it and ended the terrible violence.

I am Algerian and I was a child during this decade , it was nightmarish , alhamdolilah now this is over and we live in peace and stability , but the trauma is engraved in our bones I remember every minute of it , every traumatic masacare every horrible crime , my heart is aching just remembering 💔 I remember that before sleeping every night I would think of what should we do if terrorists would attack us , where we should hide or what should I do to save my little siblings , the fault was on the army they should have let FIS took their chairs in the parliament

Sadly i grow up in Algeia during these atrocities, so I was kinda shaking while xatching it since I still recall every single events, i still remember the October 5th 1988, even, the marches of the 1990, 1991, the GIA massacres in Bentalha and Rais.. Sadly that's what I temember from my teenage years.. I call it teenage Nightmare as opposed to "Teenage dreams". Hey, but we are okay, at least we get stories to tell to our children.

Algeria refused access to Atlantic when offered by Morocco and Mauritania to divide Western Sahara into 3 parts, and supported Polisario instead. I was six years old but I remember one time the army shooting at islamists in the neighborhood, I was walking to school and saw people injured and blood everywhere...it was very scary, thank God the bakery owner of our neighborhood hid us in his shop until the shooting stopped ( my parents were sure I died)

I know it is just a youtube vid..but the number of historical shortcuts and narrative extrapolations is amazing. How can one speak about the History of a country without speaking of the local socio economical situation that led to its tumbling down into the bloodshed of the 90s. I think you're throwing out the baby with the bath water. Liberalization and democracy is always preferable for both individual rights, economic growth and human development compared to authoritarianism. The clear problem here is the radical far right islamic extremism that has plagued nearly every middle eastern government regardless of the ruling governments ideology for centuries. Arab secularism was a fragile and temporary blip in the middle easts continuous reign of islamism in one form or another going back to the first caliphate.

the first Friday of Hirak in 2019 was weird, I didn't really experience the black decade since I was born in the late 90s but when I got out to the streets to protest I really felt it, the pain and scars in the streets, few people protesting with me, voices were very low and so little movment, after the first Friday tho the Algerians got the courage they needed and shouted high and we made a change elhmdlh

We lost so many friends and loved ones, we were kicked from our homes and properties. Simply because the early 90s was the perfect environments for so many individuals to try and get their hands on a piece of the pie, and showed their thirst for power, to steer the country the way they wanted, that clash of ideology and politics resulted in what we like to call the Red decade. A decade where only the common folk suffered while most wealthy and powerful people fled the country towards France and other countries.

Knowing that the Algerian civil war is a very complex topic, a war that took the lives of 250000 Algerian and its roots dates back to the French colonialism. You stated that the GIA had conflicts with AIS (the real FIS descendants) as well with the "The government", and you raised the question by the locals in the Bentlha and Rais massacres asked (which happened in a remote area in the capital Algiers); why didn't the local authorities intervene (Near Bentelha there is a military base)? The short and concise answer for that is that the GIA was an internal military intelligence militia, they created it to massacre the people and intimidate the Algerian population by the bloody decade each time they demanded their rights, Agents from the intelligence used to drink in a Bar (in Hussein-dey) then dress up as Islamists and set up what we used to call "False Military points", where they kill/kidnap whom they want... It's a very unfortunate history the modern Algeria and what I stated in this comment has been the testimony of ex GIA, Intelligence members. The Algerian population today have learned this harsh truth about this decade.

This cycle of violence could most likely happen again in the nearby future. The current military regime is suppressing the people for a long time. Inflation is high basic food like oil bread flour milk and many more is almost not available.

The death toll for the dark decade shouldn’t exceed 80k but speculations go from 50k to 200k depends which side is using it for. Algerian government never attempted to carry out statistics. One important note that is not mentioned is that Chadhli's government borrowed from the gulf monarchies when the economic crisis started. In turn, they were allowed to export to Algeria their version of Islam, Wahabbism. Which is violent and was at odds with Algerian culture and traditional Sufi Islam that had shaped Algerian identity.

Nah its just politics, Army stepped in to stop an Islamist party from winning the election and things got ugly, it always ends in a civil war if a popular movement is suppressed by Army Arab nations never learn same happened in Syria.

My father fled Algeria for the US in 1995 after he completed his three years of university because he wasn’t able to become a police officer due to the security issues that was occurring. My mother fled Algeria for the US in 1997 after she had completed a five year engineering degree and she wasn’t able to find a job afterwards. Many of her neighbors and friends during the years of the civil war were murdered for things like not wearing the hijab. The government blamed the GIA for this when it was soldiers of the government dressed in thobes and fake beards who were the ones actually committing these atrocities. The vast majority of the country supported the GIA and their ideology but to make them look bad and extreme, the government carefully planned these executions to try and change the population’s support of the GIA.
This may just be your family's personal experience
But in general, you must know that the main culprit in all of this is the Algerian intelligence, led by the country’s bloody generals, who exploited the GIA to achieve their own personal interests.

Arabisation of Algeria which came into play with the Egyptian scholars and such that came to Algeria to teach Arabic and possibly influenced a bit.
A few coups came to be such as the failed coup by Tahar Zbiri during boumiedienne reign which was close to success if it were not for the Soviet jets that were sent to Boumidienne.

The" arabisation" was a natural process to gain back the arabic / muslim identity since the population was a predominantly Arab / Muslim and was almost wiped out due to the French colonial policy to distort/ kill the identity for a century and half to consolidate the colonial existence in Algeria.
