Especially since the house was open to the weather. Wind could have easily enter and lifted up on the roof and out with the walls. Wind blowing over the house would have reduced the air pressure immediately above, leaving the roof more vulnerable to wind being caught inside.
Build strong and NEVER cut corners. I live in South Florida and my home was built 3X above code. thus far 130 mph winds and not a shingle moved! Built once and right!
@Ozone This is VERY true, I do not, but by the same token I have built several buildings and when you build ABOVE code the house will last. Build like crap the house will fail. Common sense.
Just about every neighborhood here is cheaply built and nothing about them is good. I’m waiting for a tornado to come through and cause a crazy amount of damage. We’ve had multiple severe warned supercells come over so it’s gonna happen at some point. Just gotta wait. Once that happens maybe they’ll start to build quality houses instead of making them cheap to make a ton of overpriced housing real quick.
I think that was thier momma yelling at them as she sounds like shes in her late 40s possibly early 50s. These guys are clearly in the mid to late 20s at most and she was yelling at them protecting thier butts too as even we men get curious and wanna see dangerous stuff IRL XD!!!!!!!

The weather is going wild all around the world thanks to global warming, here in Brazil we never had tornadoes, now they keep happening. Hurricanes were rare, now they're happening all the time. Daily huge storms, floods, month worth of rains falling in a few hours, it's just chaos.
My heart goes out to all of you guys!!! Living on the Gulf Coast of Alabama we are familiar with storms like this, in fact we just got back to work and have power from Hurricane Sally. But i understand that out there ya'll aren't accustom to hurricane like storms and it has to be beyond super overwhelming and bizzar to see! I pray that God will be with you guys as you rebuild and with the farmers who lost their crops!! We understand that most all of our crops come from out west and we appreciate ya'll!
Although iowans aren't familiar with hurricanes, we are definitely familiar with tornadoes and windstorms. I was in Walmart and a touchdown funnel cloud was litteraly 2 miles away but everyone kept shopping. Some even went outside and watched. I, of course, did too but but it was still a little nerveracking.
So, if I lived in the Cedar Rapids area, you folks would be who I'd turn to for a new stick-built home, hands down. Surviving a 126 mph stress test, with you inside, is a pretty good advertisement! Excellent job! 😊
Iowa strong! I was born and raised In Eastern Iowa, and know CR well. My son in law works in Marion and they live in Anamosa. I now live in a suburb of Chicago and we got hit also, but not as bad as Iowa. You were spot on about it not being a tornado and how it feels like to be in a hurricane! My husband, like you two guys, stayed upstairs watching it too, until he FINALLY came down to the basement and said exactly what you did! "Never have I seen a storm like this!!" Glad you were all safe and your house strong!
"we might have to go into the basement" "that's gotta be a tornado" "yeah" *continues to stand there* *windows break* "yeah. That's gotta be a tornado." *stands there*

Choked with smoke and surrounded by distant fires right now. I find a weird comfort in all the wind and rain in these Derecho videos. No comfort in the destruction, though. It's all bad, be it fire or wind and water. This is one of the fiercest locations I've yet seen.
Wow, I grew up in Nebraska and have never seen anything like this. Just one time straight line winds blew through Lincoln ahead of a thunderstorm at 88 mph and did massive damage in a short amount of time. This, though, is just incredible.

And your Handcraft is impressing me even more than the storm already. A house withstands 120 mph? With almost no damage? Damn, that's stunning, man.
I enjoyed your video very much and wish to thank you for keeping your super nice truck inside your garage. It is a pet peeve of mine that I watch these kinds of videos from Texas , Kansas and all over the storm areas and it seems no one cares to put the nice cars and trucks inside there garages even though they have two or three spaces for them. Then i watch all these nice vehicles get hail damage because the owners won't use these garages for what they are intended for. I appreciate you taking care of yours.😀💙
I will never forget that storm. Tried filming it at a Cook County Forest Preserve in Illinois. The wind knocked down my cameras, blew my French Fries all over the field and sogged up my McDonalds Quarter Pounder with cheese. But I got other storm videos under my belt. Subscribed.
I'm honestly surprised the roof didn't take off like a kite, considering how the wind was forcing it's way into that garage. It proves that house is structurally sound; good job on that build! I'm glad you lot were all unharmed. That Derecho was no joke
It also proves that the air pressure was equalized, that's what causes most houses to burst from the inside. Roof just pops off like a lid, I believe due to it not being finished was a huge benefit.
WOW.!!! THESE THINGS ARE PHENOMENAL. THE EXTENT OF TIME THEY MAINTAIN THERE POWER FOR IS JUST UNBELIEVABLE. THANK YOU FOR SHARING. GOD BLESS YOU AND YOURS STAY SAFE ALWAYS.
Thank you We use quite a bit of old school practices as well as build stronger than code regulation requires. Code is just a base minimum requirement. We’re building more than just a piece of eye candy. People trust us with their lives and many of them don’t even realize it. We take that seriously.
Agreed, it seemed to just go on and on, almost 45 minutes. It also seemed that there was no serious warning either by radio or sirens. We were in Marion and it was a total surprise.
No doubt a surprise. I’ve been a block from a tornado. I’ve Been around floods, Tennis ball hail storms, blizzards, ice storms, we even had a dry 70mph hurricane but this one goes down by far the most intense for me in the storms i’ve experienced in my life.
Glad you were all safe. You did a fantastic job on the house, with so much damage to houses nearby it wasn't luck that there was little damage to yours, it was skill! Kudos!
The home you were building was built very well to stand in the face of that horrible storm.Says alot about the type of work you do!! Glad you had almost no damage. Great video! Can you imagine a hurricane is like 8 hours or more of that crazy wind
It's really not though. Hurricanes blow through in many hours or days, not minutes, and the storm structure is nothing like a hurricane. Maybe to people that know almost nothing about storms, or people that have only seen brief hurricane footage on TV. The only real similarities are heavy rain, possible hail and brief spin up tornadoes (which are all most severe storms anyway) and strong sustained straight line winds. I use sustained lightly because as thunderstorm events go it's a good while, but compared to a hurricane, there really is no comparison between the two with time scales.
If I ever need a home built, I'm definitely calling you guys. Any home that can withstand a storm like that without losing any shingles is a well built home.
Horrific and scary. My family came from Cedar Rapids, but now the old folks have passed, and we've all scattered across the country. But I remember the lush ancient trees and the smell of oatmeal. Your musical presentation brought tears to my eyes.
My son has just moved there recently. Awesome community and wonderful people. The town is rebuilding back but will take some time to look normal. Thank you for your comment I’m glad it touched you this way
Homes built that strong are few and far between...I live in Fairhope, AL close to where hurricane Sally made landfall and I can promise you what y’all experienced is what we experience when a major hurricane comes ashore....some of us are still without power but thankfully more is restored daily....hope all is well and still praying for the areas hit hardest by the Derecho
I've just recently heard of Derechos and I've been obsessed with them ever since. I saw one turn daytime blacker than night. No exaggeration. Cut there were no stars or moon. It was pretty eerie. Glad everyone is safe. I feel bad for the trees tho.
I can’t believe that white trailer was upright when the storm was over! Must have been something HEAVY in that thing. Glad your home was mostly ok.❤️🐝🤗
Had one of these go through the Detroit area in 1981. I remember it well. Power was out for two weeks and it was amazing how so many miles of area were affected. The sidewalks and driveways were heaved up as massive old oak and maple trees were blown over and the roots ripped up as the trees cut houses into two. It was known as the great green storm. We watched in rolling in like a massive black wave falling over itself because the clouds were so dark, then after the storm finally passed the sunlight passing through the clouds caused only the green spectrum of light to pass for about three minutes.
Excellent coverage mates! Listening to this in stereo with a really good set of headphones was astounding. The roar was incredible! Glad your safe and doing well.
You folks did a good job. Often when a house has a way for the wind to get inside, big storms like this (tornadoes, derechos, hurricanes) just tear the building apart from the inside. Take a look at some of the stuff Tim Marshall has documented over the years (professional engineer, inspector retired from Haag down in TX). Yeah, this was one of the worst derechos in IA / IL in many years. I've seen many and this one was a real monster. Because of their size and the breadth of the damage, I'll take a tornado hands down by comparison (no, tornadoes don't last 15 min - good call). I work for one of the local cellular service companies and our data center not far from where you folks were at lost it's roof completely. We're still doing cleanup to buildings, towers, etc. Thanks for sharing this!
Hurricane Irma did this to us for more than 12 hours. I never wanted a basement so bad! We heard the "train sound" all through the night and finally I said forget this I'm going to sleep. The pressure was so bad it gave everyone headaches. Glad to say our place had no damage but the country club next door was riddled with roof damage. Weird.
Love this video. My husband was also in a new construction home with his concrete team in marion during the derecho. You said everything we were all thinking..what kind of tornado is this...the wind keeps switching directions...what was that noise...ha! Gave me anxiety watching as we come up on the 1 year Anniversary of what we all know now as the derecho. Glad you're all safe, and thanks for the business plug lol you make strong houses!!! Liz, Cedar rapids
Side note: When you do tall garages like that make the posts to each side of the doors much beefier then use a plug-wall above the door opening in case you need to have a taller door later. A 4' tall plug above the main opening that you can remove (lag and strapping) can be very very useful.
Amazing video. Thank you. Very apt title description - Land Hurricane !!! Seeing the radar was cringing !!! Glad your family and friend safe. Council Blfs.
That was no transformer. Wow, can't believe no one knows how unnormal this is. And how is this straight LINE winds when they area changing and going all directions? Glad you all were safe!
You all need to build houses in hurricane county.. I'm amazed by the strength of the house 😯 and yes, this is exactly what a hurricane looks like.. except they can last hours
@@GP80888 Several issues with this. 1. They were not clocked. It was a damage survey group surveying damage a few miles OUTSIDE of the city limits to the southwest of C.R. 2. The highest ever actually measured gust in Iowan history, caused by this derecho aswell funnily enough, was in Atkins, IA at 126 MPH. 3. If you have ever seen cat 4 hurricane damage, you'd know the trees have basically NO leaves on them, while in the damage images the trees still retain most leaves. The reason I am using defoliation as a wind metric is it is quite universal. While structures are built better in Hurricane Prone areas, the tree leaf retention against wind is largely the same. 4. The saffir-simpson hurricane scale measures by SUSTAINED WINDS, not gusts. So there ya go, you are wrong greg.
Damn that was crazy. You guys were lucky that house wasn't further in the building process or else i dont think it'd have help us quite as well as it did. the wind had plenty of room to move around and not get stuck. Good job on the house and those shingles were tough af.
A year ago already. I remember just watching trees fall down as the wave of wind came closer. Truly one of the most insane moments I’ve ever witnessed.
An unfinished house which still had some large openings might come through strong winds better than a finished house. If moving air has space to go through without pressing against a solid wooden wall, it could do that instead of knocking the wall down completely.
Very well could be. But 2x6 garage walls, more anchor bolts used than minimum requirement, gable and truss bracing done to exact engineer spec with no cut corners to save material, sheeting made sure to properly catch sill plate and both top plates, a garage portal nailed and strapped properly, and all the right structural nails used in the truss hurricane ties probably helped :)
@@clemconstructiongroup1700 I would definitely use this video to show someone why they should hire your company over the possibly cheaper one that built the other under construction home. In the long run it pays off spending more to do it right (plus some). Kudos to your company 👏 🙌 hopefully your own homes faired as well or better than this one!
I was in a Hurricane in 1998, Hurricane George that hit the island of Puerto Rico as a category 2 storm 10 miles away from cat 3.the damage was something incredible I remember seeing a hose or what was a house that the only thing standing was the floor and a refrigerator in one of the corners.
Impressive that the incomplete house came out pretty unscathed O: Glad you were all safe :D I was in one of the areas hit by the derecho in Canada last month.. was nowhere near as bad as this O. O and compared to other areas hit, my particular area kind of just got tickled.. not even a single potted plant was disturbed (meanwhile trees were down on the other end). Certainly a mysterious phenomena.. (Oh fun part was that nobody in my house got an alert on the phone :) people in other areas got alert just minutes before it hit)
Definitely a bit terrifying for a while. I have been a block away from an F4 tornado passing by as well. Two completely different types of scary. One experience in each category is plenty in a lifetime. I heard about the recent event up there. I will have to check out some videos. Thanks
19:20 - "Skogman houses are going down" Are you suggesting that when it's time to build, we DON'T go with Skogman? ;) Note: In Fairfax the wind really only ever went in one direction - NW to SE. No wonder Marion was so bad if y'all got it from both directions.
In the Falkland Islands at the RAF Mount Pleasant Airport I have seen a wide body jet come in to land with head winds of 160 mph, touchdown speed on the book was 150. By the time the aircraft had wheels on the ground it was actually going backwards.
I felt the same way as you - it felt like a tornado at the time, because I didn't know anything else - but MAN did it feel like that tornado just went on forever.
This is the best construction company advertisement ever! XD
I'm sold lol
My grandparents live across the stream from the house he was in it's under construction

No doubt a surprise. I’ve been a block from a tornado. I’ve Been around floods, Tennis ball hail storms, blizzards, ice storms, we even had a dry 70mph hurricane but this one goes down by far the most intense for me in the storms i’ve experienced in my life.
@@clemconstructiongroup1700 definitely, agreed! It was something no one was prepared for.
Crazy how 15 minutes can change your life. Thanks for sharing
Nice Job guys!! Be proud of your building skills! This should be an advertisement to show how well built your homes are! Wtg
That is a good way to describe the Derecho, a land hurricane.
This is the best video online of it. This was equivalent to a CAT 3 hurricane on the Saffir Simpson scale
Impressed! We do concrete block in SW Florida and have very strict building codes. If I lived up in Iowa, I'd definitely be looking your company up.
Heath James
I wish we could have basements in Florida.
@@lindaterrell5535 that’s not gonna work with the storm surge from hurricanes I guess
Use these guys to build your house!! Wow!! Excellent!! Great video, thanks for posting!!
Thank you for your comment I’m glad it touched you this way
I’m call you guys to build my next home!! That storm was incredible.
I was so released then you said basement. Oh 😧 all the hard work I hope you guys are safe
Good job on building that home.
I can't believe your house survived with such little damage! Glad you're all safe!
Sally wasn't a major (it was cat 2)
I've just recently heard of Derechos and I've been obsessed with them ever since. I saw one turn daytime blacker than night. No exaggeration. Cut there were no stars or moon. It was pretty eerie. Glad everyone is safe. I feel bad for the trees tho.
Good job. You should feel proud of your standards, skill, and ability. Wow.
Crazy storm. Loved the 1/2 empty spray bottle never moved. Gonna use that as my warning device from now on LOL! You boys were lucky.
Thank you
We appreciate your comments
GOD ENJOYED YOUR COMPANY!
If I was getting a new house built this would be the guys I’m calling. Man that house is super strong and it’s not even close to being done
Wow! Great video....thanks for the shots after the storm
All I can say is WOW. And I wish I experienced more builders with your ethics
Had something like this go through Keokuk an Washington counties back in '98-'99ish. Fun while on the road. 😁
Jetstream at ground level.
Liz,
Cedar rapids
Thats one hell of a house you got there survived a cat one hurricane maybe a cat 2.
Winds were clocked at 140mph in Cedar Rapids. That would be classified as a category 4 hurricane.
You guys do high quality work! What a wild ride!
You did a great job on this video. Awesome building/construction skills too.
Damn that was crazy. You guys were lucky that house wasn't further in the building process or else i dont think it'd have help us quite as well as it did. the wind had plenty of room to move around and not get stuck. Good job on the house and those shingles were tough af.
Wow, This is more like a Hurricane!, Been through some bad one here in Gulf Coast Texas!, Great Video and glad y'all were OK!
A year ago already. I remember just watching trees fall down as the wave of wind came closer. Truly one of the most insane moments I’ve ever witnessed.
You guys are either very curious, brave or nuts. Ut thanks for sharing your experience. Build right and it pays off.
All of the above :)
That's one solid house you folks built!
You could make a really good advertising campaign out of this
The most impressive thing was how long it lasted.. normally those storms are moving at over 60-80mph
Impressive that the incomplete house came out pretty unscathed O: Glad you were all safe :D
I was in one of the areas hit by the derecho in Canada last month.. was nowhere near as bad as this O.
Thanks
Wow guys! I'd have you build my house for sure! Need to use hurricane windows and doors tho
Great work on your home!! WOW!! Barely a scratch on her.
19:20 - "Skogman houses are going down"
Are you suggesting that when it's time to build, we DON'T go with Skogman? ;)
Note: In Fairfax the wind really only ever went in one direction - NW to SE. No wonder Marion was so bad if y'all got it from both directions.
That must’ve felt like the end of the world! It seemed endless.
As Mike Holmes says, "Build it right the first time."
Excellent ad endorsement from Mother Nature herself...you couldn’t ask for more. 😂
Wow !!! Wish you were around where I live in IL we need good builders like you and I need some work done
