This would be a great video to show kids in tornado safety classes. If the tornado looks like it's not moving, that means it's coming straight at you. Those multiple vortexes are the scariest sight, wow!

    • @nappa3550

It could also be moving straight away, but that would only be useful typically as a storm chaser

@@nappa3550If it's getting smaller, likely it's moving away. Obviously, if it's getting bigger it's coming right at you.

People repeating something akin to, "if it doesn't look like the tornado is moving, then it's moving towards you" on every tornado video, are becoming an absolute scourge to tornado videos, almost to the point where it's effectively trolling.
      🙄
A miniscule amount of directional awareness, (which anyone age 12 or older should possess), can tell you whether a sighted tornado is moving towards you, away from you or laterally.

That was one of the nastiest shape-shifting, multi-vortex tornados I've seen. That sucker had some reach too, with all that incredible inflow -- the visible part(s) of the tornado were quite some distance away yet it was doing incredible damage.

  • @Kombivar

Can I just emphasise on how calm and composed was the person filming it? A). He held camera/phone in a correct orientation, understanding why we have eyes side by side, not one above the others. B). He set the composition of the frame, doing little to no adjustments (no panning and zooming in and out in an overexaggerated manner). C). He remained calm and composed, setting the end line in his head (The 2nd tree line, behind the field), meaning he knew in advance when to give up and go for shelter, instead of being lured into this mesmerising spectacle for too long for safe retreat.
Absolutely fantastic work. I hope you are far into the clean-up and rebuild, and the insurance company didn't do anything stupid to void the claim. I wish you a speedy recovery and consideration of becoming a professional storm chaser if you aren't already.

You could tell it would slightly miss when they were outside. You can tell it was originally heading straight after them though.
Roughly 5:00 - 6:30 it looks to have shifted slightly right turning into a slightly more northerly heading. Footage is taken northwest of the tornado (tornadoes usually move northeast to varying degrees), with the tornado shifting to a more northeast heading than an east-northeast one. Sorry to be specific if you don't like that.

Oh that is terrible. I'm glad that you went inside when you did. People underestimate the damage done by the inflows and outflows. The main tornado doesn't even have to go directly over you to sustain bad damage.

Some years ago I saw a test / demonstration of how different roofing materials stand up to very high winds. To my surprise, asphalt shingles did the best because they're flexible and therefore are less likely to be torn off. The more solid materials like what's on the roof of this house are more prone to destruction, because if one fails and is torn off, the wind can immediately get under all the others nearby and rip them away too.

Actually, those are spruces. Beautiful trees for sure. From the later footage, you can see at least the one in the middle survived unscathed. One had its head chopped off, but if allowed time, will regrow. All of the trees, even the small ones were troopers in this video. Albeit the tornado didn’t actually directly hit the property, that inflow jet was probably cranking at around 90 to 100 miles per hour at times. Incredible.

Thank you for having the patience and knowledge of safety to film the formation of this tornado. I grew up in Knoxville, Tn, and, back in the mid to late 80’s, I watched something like the early portion of this video and then drove home, stupidly, through the worse rainstorm I’ve ever experienced in a vehicle. The news called it a wind shear, but I have always believed it was a funnel cloud because I watched the formation from the perfect vantage point, like you. It ripped the roofs off of homes in the neighborhood next to ours (Gulf Park) and bent a two-story cross in front of a church on Cedar Bluff Road down to the ground. Scared me half to death, but I have always loved storms. Glad you were safe. Beautiful home, property and setting, btw. Thank you for the video.

I was able to use the power flashes (the "sparks") seen in this video to sync it up with one by High Risk Chris. Pause this video at 2:10 and go to 3:29 on Chris's chase video and you can see this tornado from two angles. I think there's a cut in Chris's video, but you can resync again by setting this video to 4:08 and Chris's to 5:24.

Goes to show, 1) you don’t need to see a “funnel” to have a tornado and 2) you don’t need to take a direct hit to be severely injured or have severe damage. The inflow alone can do quite a number!
