This is why you NEED to visit Gdańsk | Europe’s MOST underrated city (VLOG)

- Come with me and explore the beauty of Gdańsk, Poland on my vlog of the city. You can treat this video as a bit of a travel guide for Gdansk, as I show you round all the main attractions in the city.
I was so pleasantly surprised by the city, especially Gdansk Old Town. I’ll take you down the Main Street, Długa Street, and show you all of Gdańsk’s beautiful landmarks, the colourful and eccentric streets.
While exploring, I’ll also tell you a little bit about the history of Gdańsk, and why they have such beautiful, and Dutch looking architecture!
I also visited Malbork Castle, the world’s largest castle by land area, which started being built in the 13th Century by the Teutonic Order. I have a separate video coming out soon for Malbork Castle, so make sure you stick around for that in a few days!
Back to Gdańsk, I also got some stunning 4K drone footage of the city which I absolutely love.
Anyway, I hope you enjoyed this video and find it valuable.

You have nice girl.
Finally someone concentrates on the real, historical juice, instead of getting sidetracked in some restaurant, taking pictures of the food, which is great by the way, but.. Great job! Thank you!
You’re very welcome, glad you enjoyed 😊
Just back from Gdansk and my god we loved it so much!!
That’s amazing, what was it you loved about it?
I visited this amazing, beautiful city this May. I liked Poland before, but in recent years I have fallen in love with it. I read the History of Poland, book published in our country a few years ago, and it is already clear that I have to visit many more places in Poland.
Tak za mocno nie studiuj historii Polski bo się zdziwisz i czasami zawiedziesz
I visited Gdańsk in August!! Fell in love in that city! Absolutely amazing 🤩 greetings from Australia 🇦🇺
That’s really cool you visited all the way from Australia! You must’ve visited some other places in Europe too?
Most beautiful city in Europe

Was it crowded and hot?
Visiting this breathtaking city in less than one month. One of the best videos of it ever seen!
Thank you so much! Have a great time 😁
Gdansk is beautiful. Went a while ago in March. Went to Sopot and the waves had frozen on to the lights at the end of the pier in amazing shapes! The new flats on the opposite bank from the Green Gate were only just starting to be built. They look fab.
It really is Scott, thanks for commenting. That sounds like an incredible sight, the waves in the sea had frozen?! And sure, it’s really nice round that area, we almost stayed in the one with the glass balcony overlooking the river!
@@BenRobson123 Aye bud the waves from the sea had frozen. Was bitter though minus 10C or something but was fab. That would have been an incredible spot to stay in! I stayed in a wee Airbnb round the back of St. Mary's.
Wow that certainly sounds like something to see. I actually really want to go on a winter getaway somewhere in Europe when it’s snowy! And I was in an Airbnb right next to the basilica too… may have been the same!😅
@@BenRobson123 If you want somewhere a bit different for a Winter getaway try Gothenburg in Sweden. It's lovely for a short break and you can get the train to Oslo fairly quickly so cheaper way to see a bit of Norway.
Ahh that’s a fantastic idea that Scott, thanks a lot. I was meant to go to Gothenburg back in 2020 actually just as Covid started.
Would be great to see Oslo in the same trip!
Thank YOU, from Vancouver, British Columbia. What a beautiful city Gdansk. Thanks
Really cool to see people from all over have come across my videos. Thank you for watching 😇
A beautiful city, great photos and your enthusiasm make the film look like a Gdańsk advertisement. Well done! 🤩🤩
Means a great deal Sam!😁 I wish I was getting paid for the advertisement!😅
Did Warsaw a few years ago and were smitten with the city - just lovely. That was our first taste of Poland and we vowed to return. Whilst a lot of the experience tourists to Poland recommended Krakow for our next visit - every single one who had been to Gdansk informed us THE city to visit in Poland is without a doubt Gdansk. Sooooooo..... we are booked in for a week in September 2023 - really looking forward to this.
That’s great, Poland is beautiful. And sure, it is a beautiful city, I was really impressed with it. Lots of fantastic history too.
Glad you have a trip booked up, worth a visit to Malbork Castle, and Westerplatte if you’re interested in WW2 history. Enjoy!
@@BenRobson123 Both on the todo list mate - thanks.
You can add the nearby german concentration camp in Stuthoff to the list

Gdansk is one of our favorite places in the WORLD, thanks for the video ❤🇵🇱
I live here since I was born and I am glad that you made this video. You have shown amazingly how beautiful our city is. I fell in love with it again, even though I see it every day❤

I live in Gdansk as a foreigner and it is absolutely peaceful and I always feel at home. I have been in love with the city since the first day. I feel so happy to live in this beautiful city. And it is a really great place to Visit🤩😍🥰
I’m glad. Yes, it is a beautiful city 😄
What about the economic life in Poland , is it comparable with those of Germany, France and Austria?
Skąd ty jesteś?
What a fantastic video, bonny lad. So well put together, beautifully shot and very informative. I'm a huge fan of Poland and have been just about everywhere there .... except Gdańsk!! I'm dying to go and got some useful tips here.
Thank you so much Barry, really appreciate the comment. Gdańsk is a fantastic city full of colour and history. Malbork Castle is well worth the visit too :)
Thank you Stephen, I’m sure you’ll love it. How much time do you have there?
Any questions feel free to ask
I was in Gdansk last week and it was absolutely packed with tourists, especially from Germany and Scandinavia. Best time to go is during St Dominic’s Fair which is in July and August
Yep, I think it's certainly getting more popular. I'd imagine it's a hell of a lot quieter in autumn and spring, or winter. But perhaps not as pretty when its grey and rainy!
Awesome video, Ben. What a stunning city. Definitely on the list now for when I next get the chance to visit Europe. Your Wrocław video put that on my list too 👍
Cheers Dean! Glad I gave you some inspo, two beautiful cities!
Gdansk is a beautiful place.really nice.
I live next door in Gdynia, but Gdańsk is where I work. It is certainly one of the most beautiful places in northern Europe. I also recommend a holiday in Sopot (15 min from Gdansk) - great spas, cycle routes and long wide beaches.
Ahh yes I heard about Sopot, perhaps one day I shall come back and visit. You’re right, Gdańsk is beautiful!
Mom was born there in 1938! She obviously fled with the majority of the people of Gdansk "Danzig" as the Soviets advanced and ended up in West Germany. Thanks for sharing!
Great video - you’ve put a ton of work into it. Thank you.
Thanks Wesley, nice to know when the hard work is acknowledged

Thanks Amol!😇
I have been there years ago, it's most beautiful city in Eastern Europe, the capital of amber - Gdansk. Thank you for sharing.
it is beautiful, thank you :)
Poland is in Central Europe, not Eastern Europe: geographically and mentally.
The Iron Curtain fell more than 30 years ago, and it really is high time to understand that that division of Europe no longer exists. The geographical Centre of Europe is in Lithuania, Belarus, Ukraine or in the east of Poland (depending on what method of measuring is used). East Europe means Russia.
If you say that Poland is an Eastern European country then you are insulting Poles with this statement. East is Russia and other countries to the east. And we certainly do not want to be associated in any way with this barbaric country.
So picturesque... amazingly beautiful 🥰
Beautiful 🥰 view
Looks like somewhere I need to visit

About the 1944 town destruction, I think you confused Gdańsk with Warsaw :). Anyway, beautifully made vid, great shots!
Thank you for the comment! I googled it, and It states across a few websites that Gdańsk was mainly untouched throughout the war, up until the Soviets passed through in 1945. Although it seems unclear as to who destroyed the city.
I’m not entirely sure though!
Gdańsk was completly destroyed by soviet army in 1945. Type in UA-cam " zniszczony Gdańsk po wojnie" thats movies done in 1945.
Sorry, nikka. You're mistaken. Warsaw was indeed destroyed but so was Gdańsk. No confusion.
aisha1977pl is correct. Danzig/Gdansk was destroyed by the Soviet Army in 1945, late March 1945 , barely 5 to 6 weeks before the end of the war. It was the old town they set fire to, and some parts a few blocks over were not even touched. Read what the Soviet Army did to St. Mary's. Really terrible. The pictures of the destruction are heartbreaking to see. When I was in Poland in 1989 I went on a tour of Gdansk and the tour guide said the Germans did it and that the Germans badly damaged Malbork Castle. Both were 100% lies. Danzig and Malbork/Marienburg were German cities. It was the Soviet Army who did it and the Polish people who restored everything so beautifully had not lived there before the war.. They were Polish people expelled from Polish lands taken by the Soviet Union farther east and from Wilno Poland which became Vilnius Lithuania. What a magnificent job they did.
Gdansk is the most beautiful city in Poland. The prevailing wind is from the sea. Beautiful beaches, monuments, many tourist attractions, Oliwa Park, organ concerts in the cathedral. Here live the tough people of the sea who travel the Oceans.

Just came back from Gdansk and what an amazing city. The Solidarność and WW2 museums are two of the best I have ever seen. There is so much interesting history in the city. Krakow is more beautiful but for me Gdansk pips it as there is more variety with the nearby areas such as Sopot and Hel.
Glad you enjoyed it, the WW2 museum in Gdansk is fantastic. I think its hard to compare because Krakow is so much larger, but Gdansk is a bit more 'cute and romantic' I find!

Was the language barrier an issue?
I never really have trouble, though I probably don’t interact with locals a great deal. In shops and stuff you normally pay by card and whatever, and there are enough people who can speak English luckily, especially younger generations!
There should be no problems - Gdansk is visited by many tourists throughout the year and we are used to speaking in english, german and some of us in swedish and norwegian as well!
Is it permissible to call Gdansk Danzig? Just curious. Several centuries of history going back to the Hanseatic League and all ....
I think it's possible some Germans may still call the city Danzig. But I suppose it has been Gdansk and a Polish city now since after WW2!
We in Germany still call places like wroclow and gdansk "breslau and danzig"
@@South-German-Mapping Only unnormal people wall these cities like that.
Just insure your salf5 in Corupt Word.
This is Danzig, a Germany territory force to give up after WW2. HIstory is so contentious, convoluted and always written by the Victors. Time will tell if and when Germany gets it back.
Gdańsk belonged to the Polish Duchy since the year 997. Gdańsk has generally belonged to Poland (in various state forms) for 663 years, and to Germany for 125 years. Go back a lot further in history, not just 100 years back... So Gdańsk, no Danzig.
@@oskarrez8296 No, your knowledge of History is incorrect, faulty. Various kingdoms occupied the territory -german, prussian czech and a few yrs of polish duchy. That does not constitute historical basis as ownership of territory. In Truth, Prussian/german has more than enough historical records, basis to claim historical claim of Danzig land, Territory. WW 1 and 2 change all that perspective and claims by virtue of Treaties entered by the Victors of the 2 world wars.

I perceive your comments as those of a Russian troll
@@tikbalangbukid No You are completely wrong. Prussia invaded Gdańsk in 1789/95. There followed a series of strikes. There was a concomitant decrease in the city’s economy. The city became German under unification under Bismark at around 1870’s; where there were mass expulsion of Poles (ethnic cleansing). To make a long story short, Gdańsk (and Gdynia) have regained their status as the primary ports on the Baltic Sea, when communism collapsed in 1989 - it collapse was due primarily to the workers in Gdańsk under Lech Walensa. There were elections held in August 1989. THE BERLIN fell in November 1989 as Poland was free of Soviets. Gdańsk (and Gdynia) has become the most important/busiest port in Baltic Region officially in 2018/19; and the wealthiest in the region due to Poland.

Danzing is long gone. It was razed to the ground by the germans and russians during the Second World War.
This city was so german at the time that the germans themselves had to invade and bomb it.
The stupidity of the germans knows no bounds !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ha ha ha ha
What exists is a Gdańsk built anew according to the architecture that existed in the so-called ‘Golden Age of Gdańsk’ by the Poles - the time when Gdańsk was Polish.
The entire Gdańsk region belonged to the Kingdom of Poland in the 11th century and later - for more than two hundred years - was ruled by the dukes of Pomerania, who at the end of the 13th century ceded their domains to the rulers of Poland, Przemysł II, and Władysław Łokietek.
Out of over 1,000 years of existence, 146 years belonged to the Teutonic Knights, 126 to Prussia and the German Reich, and 26 years were formally a "Free City". Together this adds up to 298 years.
For the remaining 700 years it was Polish/closely linked to Poland.
Not the fact that I'm in Gdańsk like rn🤷♀️
UA-cam is watching 😯
what he showed and introduced as the Oldtown, is actually not. The oldtown is a bit further north adjacent to this what used to be the historic Newtown. In German it is call "Rechtsstadt" - lit. right town and the Poles called something like main town or main quarter. After the devastation of the war it was not rebuilt to what it was before the war as he said, rather to an idealised version - that's whay it looks so pretty today.
Lovely city, but I prefer Krakow
