Really terrible that she felt her mother wouldn't believe her. Very painful feeling and I wonder what her mother could have done that made her feel like that. She constantly accused her of seeing boys as a teen but earlier in her childhood probably made her feel unimportant.

I wonder if the mother sensed something was off but failed in communication/listening to get the grip of it as it was.
I kind of wonder if Patty was off in a way that could bevisible to others. Intellectually she faired ok in school yet still she was approached by Frank in a way and her own behaviour seems like that of somebody with an intellectual glitch.

I think the really heartbreaking thing about this case is that Patricia spent practically all her life around adults who only saw her as a s*x object to either be protected or exploited, and I can't help but think that played a serious role in how things turned out.

Okay, I commented before watching it and now I’m back. Patty was my babysitter when I was young. She stopped when she started working at Walgreen’s. Her brother and my cousin were classmates and friends. They lived about 3 houses apart from each other. The family were known “eccentric” and some people did think there were mob ties. They were also obsessed with their poodle, who’s name escapes me.
After the murders, no one suspected Patty. They thought it was random hippies. Neighbors believed they got in using a garage door opener because back then they were all the same frequency. People disconnected their garage doors.
When it turned out to be Patty it was shocking. It still is. There are a few things left out here but also, a lot I didn’t know.
My cousin can’t be in the room when this is discussed. I wonder what he would think. I’m not going to bring it up though.
As always, this is really well done. I seldom comment but I’m a big fan.

1.Did it seem like she took up babysitting as a begrudging obligation from her family?
2.Yeah, I read many accounts that Patty had a very two faced relationship with her brother. On one hand, I recall that she doted on Mike and showered him with free food from her job, but was also extremely jealous of him and believed that he diverted their parents’ attention away from her. If I’m remembering the details correctly, I think this manifested in Patty initially insisting that Micheal being spared, but decided on killing him herself after DeLuca convinced her otherwise.

Its usually because that mother was abused herself. So they become paranoid and control freaks. Your mother might have been abused or know someone who was. Likewise it can go in the reverse where the mother doesn't care and even let's people abuse her kids, which is more common. Parents honestly usually try their best... but most are messed up, either alcoholics or weed addicts or control strict freaks or overly emotionally invested and suffocate their kids, or are totally neglectful alcoholics like my parents are with huge tempers or guilt trip us. Some parents are pretty perfect but it's rare.

Religion and culture also is a big part of it, sounds like you're Indian or something background? In that case I don't blame the woman for being cautious. And they have repressive roles in most cultures, but in the west its usually neglectful work alcoholic mothers who turn blind eyes to too many things, so in a way I envy people with mothers who care. Sadly your mum was probably a victim too that's why she ended up with a creep, maybe she knew deep down but didn't know how to get out or maybe divorce was against her religion, you should tell her the truth and maybe you'll be able to heal. Just get drunk and tell her lol. Shes probably really old by now so tell her while you can.

My mother told me when she was younger, she walked in on her dad straight up raping her older sister.
My aunt & mom went to their mother to try to get help, gma told them not to say things like that and that was it.
My mom said she felt like gma knew what was happening even before they told her, but with 13 children and no experience in the work force, gma was essentially 'trapped' and couldn't do anything.

Also, she truly loved her little brother and was furious when Mike came to spend a weekend with them and Frank gave him sleeping pills so Patty could "entertain" some adult men. @susan pitcher I think her mother was seriously at fault, ignored the regular trips with Uncle Gus, but saw sexualised behaviour in her very young daughter. The paranoid distrust of Patty in library and pool with kids her own age, means that she blamed Patty for something serious, and was terrified that she would get pregnant, complete disgrace for the family.
Gus, the candy man --- no way on earth was Patty the only victim, and there were surely rumours within the family, all hidden.

I'd say her childhood trauma turned her into the monster she is. She obviously blamed her parents for the nasty "uncle" molesting her. She wanted them to rescue her but they didn't. The fact that she didn't think her mom would believe her is so sad. She was resentful of her brother because he had the carefree childhood that she wanted and probably felt like her parents loved him more. It's really sad.

I mean they technically weren’t involved but there was at the least 4 people in this case who knew exactly what they were planning and going to do to her family and STILL didn’t tell the police until afterwards when it’s too late.. it’s just crazy this may have been prevented if they would have told authorities what she was planning

I dont get why when a inmate has done nothing but be defiant, unruly, aggressive while in prison, why give them the opportunity to even get out? If they do something so bad that it causes them to lose their right to walk amongst normal, hard working tax payers, then why give the a chance to do it again or worst? Also this whole 20 years plus sitting back with free room, free food, just passing time till they get the DP? Nope, especially when it comes to the parents killing their child/children, 5 years tops then they get the DP.
Its disgusting that a animal will go and do everything it can to protect their babies and here there are some monsters that will kill their child to get back at a ex for having a new gf. This is the world we are leaving the next generation, sad just sad

Mostly because if someone serves their sentence then they're free to go and that's the deal. It isn't always great, but I prefer that to the government being able to just lock up whoever it likes forever with no due process.
