2003 ALCS, Game 3: Yankees @ Red Sox

- New York Yankees 4 at Boston Red Sox 3, F -- It was billed as a heavyweight bout: Roger Clemens vs. Pedro Martinez. Yankees vs. Red Sox. The game actually exceeded the hype, as New York prevailed, 4-3, at Fenway Park during an evening that included a benches-clearing incident. During the fracas, Martinez knocked down charging Yankees bench coach Don Zimmer.
My favorite baseball game of all time. I'll never forget watching it live.
This really was Golden Age of Not just Baseball but all 3 of America major sports. Had the Yankee Red Sox rivalry, Patriots Dynasty, and Lakers Shaq&Kobe. Man what a time
Who give a fuck about the Patriots tainted dynasty
Personally a Red Sox fan but thank you Yankees for always keep things interesting for us. Never will there be a greater rivalry that brings out the best in players. What a ride the early 2000's where!
03-05 Yankees Red Sox was the best MLB ever was. Hope it gets back to that. You don't see that intensity in the game with those 2 teams anymore.
As a Red Sox fan, the rivalry from 1996-2009 was great, but it's gone.
The reason you are here really starts at 57:10 and ends at 1:15:38. The main event starts at 1:04:07.so just run it from 1:03:18 to 1:14:02..But it really starts at 53:30...The focus is all on P Martinez from that point...A BIG NOTE: Look what P.M. Does at the 59:52 mark...towards Todd Walker...this was the final straw.
You're the real MVP
The real reason they're here... 36:20
morbark T. Bite wow 😂😂😂😂 JLo
@@Whiskey19841 hahahahaha great find
MANCHESTER UNITED McDonald’s is the most consumed burger in the world. I guess that means it’s the best burger.
Can't believe this was 17 years ago....What a game. You could just feel the hatred between these 2 teams.
Thanks for this trip back down memory lane so many greats in this time period
Joe West and Angel Hernandez together umpiring in a playoff game with the Red Sox and Yankees with Joe and Tim doing the announcing. That's terrifying.
Which ump called the pitch that hit Karims bat a hbp?
@@leakyjeep5.9according to bbref it was Alfonso Marquez. West was on 3B and Angel was in left field
McCarver was never a good broadcaster, but at least he was still more or less coherent in 2003. Those later years were really rough
No wonder the teams got into a brawl
@@ejslemp5342 😂😂😂
Greatest couple of years in Sox-Yankees rivalry.
I'm not a fan of either team, but I remember watching this game intently back in '03, and I have to think that this game is what started my love of baseball. Such passion.
18:36 - Manny Ramirez RBI Single (2-0 Red Sox)
29:10 - Karim Garci RBI Single (2-1 Red Sox)
37:32 - Derek Jeter Home Run (2-2 Tied)
55:52 - Hideki Matsui RBI Ground-Rule Double (3-2 Yankees)
57:09 - Pedro Martinez throws a pitch at Karim Garcia and they start yelling at each other
59:18 - Groundball Double Play (4-2 Yankees). After the Double Play, Garcia and Martinez again yell each other about the Hit-by-Pitch. This ensues a bench clearing, where Pedro points at Posada's head.
1:04:07 - Roger Clemens throws a Pitch at Manny Ramirez, which starts another bench clearing. Don Zimmer rushes at Pedro Martinez, who throws him down.
1:56:26 - Groundball Double Play (4-3 Yankees)
2:20:25 - A fight breaks out in the Yankees Bullpen between relievers and Fenway Park grounds keeping staff.
As a Yankee fan, one of the best games ever!
back when the rivalry was at its peak. Awesome to see Alex, David, and Derek on Fox!
As a Yankee fan my whole life..I always loved and respected Big Pappi David Ortiz..He tried to stop Ramirez from charging the mound in the beginning...Then when Pedro knocked down Zimmer... Big Pappi stood there in shock with his hands up..And he never has a bad thing to say about the Yankees...He is truly a class act
He should have been a Yankee. George wanted him.
Don Zimmer was 72 at the time and he ready to battle. That's my general. We love him just as much as Torre. Thanks Zim we needed that to get us right.
As a yankees fan I miss this rivalry
Gerson Monroy yea...2003-2004 was the peak of the rivalry. Now they're pretty much friends...kind of sad tbh
+Tommywood right
It was such awesome rivalry! back then though, it was more about how clemens had traded to the yanks after beantown loved him and beheld him as our hero! trader son of a bitch!
Do you still miss it? Do Damage!
Atlanta fan, but I loved watching these games.
Rest in peace Don Zimmer. My appreciation for you grew with the years while with the Yankees. Thought that the confrontation with Martinez was something.
That always makes me laugh. Guy had to be senile charging at a player so much bigger and younger than him.
He wasn't shit
RIP Popeye :,)
This was one of the most watched Yankees vs redsoxs game ever with 2 great pitchers dueling it out 2 big game pitchers both big game winners as well
I was at this game - 15 years old - sitting with my brother that was 13. We're Sitting front row of the bleachers right behind the bullpen.
I'll never forget Pedro warming up pre-game in the bullpen. He looked at my brother and me and threw us the ball he was using in the bullpen. Some mid-40's guy jumped in front of me and stole the ball. Immediately put it in his bag, never even looked at it.
I'll never forget that. Fuck that guy.
Jeff Magee Pedro tried to kill a man, so
@@AAli220 when.
Yeah F that guy. Cool story.
Jeff Magee 😂 that took a turn
Sorry about you losing the ball to a 40 year old man but that's the City of Boston. A real shit show.
This is the way to watch a game. No commercials between innings makes a huge difference
i agree but sometimes it's funny to watch 20 year old commercials when people leave them in videos
I LOVE IT! Pedro was such a villain it made for such great series between these two teams
thanks for the upload, fun to watch these classic games in full!
As memorable as it was to see The Red Sox win the World Series, it kind of ended the rivalry with NY. All of this anger and tension was due to The Sox not winning in 86 years and the Yankees ending many of those attempts.
2:20:23 The scuffle that occurred in the bullpen was between Jeff Nelson, Karim Garcia, and a groundskeeper at the park. The announcers say that a fan was involved, but I'm not sure about this. Woah, this rivalry was intense back then, man!
From '97-'03 he led the league in ERA 5 Times, Single Season record for WHIP in 2000 (0.737), Single Season Strikeout per 9 Innings record, Won 3 Cy Young Awards in 4 Years and the one year he didn't win he came in 2nd...to Clemens. Here's another: In 2000 he had twice as many Strikeouts(284) per hits allowed(128). It was the first time anyone did that. It's not narrow minded to suggest he had the best run. Only guy you could say really was better at that period of time was Randy Johnson.
Every baseball fan deserves to be in the HOF for putting up with McCarver/Buck
Buck sucks major dingus
Joe Buck got the job due to nepotism
miss Tim
I muted the tv every time
The history books won’t tell our story of bravery. Very sad.
Yanks/Sox when it was a REAL rivalry! I miss these days
still is bro, but it was at its zenith then. It could always come back.
Yeah because the Red Sox suck and the Red Sox aren’t even competition. Let’s go yanks!!
After reading Pedro's book which recounts the whole game, it's clear that Tim McCarver had no idea what he was talking about.
I'm still waiting for evidence that McCarver ever knew what he was talking about.
+Islet of Langerhans McCarver was an expert at saying things that made no fucking sense.
Manny overreacting just to start trouble and for attention!
After its all said and done Yankees and Red Sox rivalry was 🐐🐐 i miss these days #yanks
this was such a great game and time for baseball
I am a Yankee fan and I miss those days.
Since that, Red Sox has 3 championships and Pedro is now a HOF, SORRY HATERS!!!
Pedro wasn't hated because of his pitching ability; He certainly deserves the HOF induction. He was hated for being an asshole (& I'm not just talking about this game)
Mhmm…. Pedro's Daddy at the House that Ruth Built...….. Eat it.
now 4. Where is Roger Clemens??? ^^
i been looking for this series for years
I love how the announcers are talking about how this could be Clemens' "last ride", but little do they know he makes a comeback in the minors at 50 lol.
right you stupid fuck because this is 2003
Ese fues el erro más grande de el palomo de Pedro Martínez por k no le dio atro de lo pelotero
and he also pitched in MLB in 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007.
Yeah, that HGH really helped extend his career. Boston never forgave Clemens. Tbh, he was always a douchebag. Glad he and all those guys aren't going in the hall of fame, not that they weren't great players, but they cheated when none of them had to and that is why it's disqualifying to me, at least.
One of the 5 greatest baseball games I have ever seen. Loved the action. Loved the drama. Loved the part at 1:04:00
Really ? .... 😮 😕
When baseball was Baseball. Although we lost to Florida , the fact we best Boston was so emotionally draining ,I was done by the WS 😂
I don't feel bad for Zim. You charge someone you better be able to handle yourself.
Kinds reminds me of Ken Shamrock and Tito Ortiz. Don was probably a legitimate tough guy in his day, but out of his league with a younger player who is also tough.
MANCHESTER UNITED soccer is full of pussies who roll around on the floor in pain if someone touches their shoulder
Exactly, It was the only the Pedro could do. Zimmer was ready to throw a punch and Pedro could have shelled him. McCarver is an idiot. Listen to Buck, he is right.
True its not like he took him down with an uppercut.......the pitch to Manny wasn't even close tho....he was looking for a reason.
@MANCHESTER UNITED might be true....if hispanics outnumber whites by then yes.
if you are here for Don Zimmer getting rekt go to 1:04:16 and watch
Thank you
Reclusion messed up😑
Reclusion that was a pussy move by Martinez
sherk fans for trump No it wasnt, what would you do, let Zimmer just charge right at you and do nothing to defend yourself? I don't care if the guy was 80 something years old or whatever he was, you have every right to protect yourself if someone is charging at you.
Donny Mckinnon maybe so, but there’s a difference between pushing him away, and slamming his head on the ground. Also, this guy was a formal manager for the Red Sox
man, I miss the old MLB theme music.
Vladimir Kalashnikov CBS has better music back in the early 90's for it's baseball broadcasts than FOX ever had.
Johnnie Murdock fact
Yea same the theme song gave me the chills
Naw the theme I miss are NBC game of the week in the early eighties.along with Angels and Dodgers theme songs back then.
"Danuh Danuh Danuh Danuh, DAnuh Danuh Danuh danuh"
I miss basically every single aspect of this time in baseball
Back when the rivalry was actually good.
You just mad the Sox are winning these days.
@@jamesnm21 Yeah now I am.
My father brought me to my first game in 1972 (we lived about 80 miles away in western MA). My father passed away in 1990 (he had attended all 4 games in 1975 World Series, I was sick at the time) and was sitting near where Dewey Evans made the great catch in Game 6. So, I ventured out to Boston (From Rochester, NY) with my 81 year old mom with me. We sat in not so great seats under the overhang off the roof behind the Yankees on-deck circle for about $1200 if memory serves me. I had attended maybe 300-350 games in my life, but never a playoff game. I can tell I was way more vocal than I should have been when the crap hit the fan. I think I was the only one in our section that noticed Zimmer making his way towards the Red Sox dugout and brought my mom's attention to it just before Pedro's olay of the charging Zimmer bull. When Clemen's threw at Manny, the thought of coming flying out of the stands did cross my mind for a second. Then the BS with what the Yankees pulled in the Bullpen with the grounds keeper guy was the icing on the cake. I still remember this game like it was yesterday, not 10.5 years ago. BTW this is the first time I am hearing the broadcast and I am sure I will probably not be enjoying the comments from McCarver based upon what I have read below.
Tim McCarver is one of the more ridiculous human beings I have ever met, known or heard of.
Chad Clifford so is Manny. The most over blown reactions in sports history
Am I the only one that came here to see when Pedro Olayd Don Zimmer 😂😂😂
7:04 Look how PACKED they are behind Home Plate!!! Yikes that WAS a tough ticket to get!
and then ben and jlo are sitting there watching it on a monitor 😂😂😂 he's a tool
This was probably the greatest baseball game I ever watched.
"no concern for the old man's well being"
Don Zimmer had no concern for Pedro Martinez's well being obviously, since he tried to swing at him.
36:26 she was with With Ben thinking about the Yankee 3rd baseman the entire time
That shit wasn't even close to remirez. And I'm not bias. I hate the Yankees and Red Sox. If you watch it posada reaches straight up for that pitch. Rimerez was looking for a fight.
One of the best moment Red Sox and Yankees rivalry
I feel like this rivalry has died down recently.
Both teams are getting old and need to rebuild. But don't worry, once the Yanks and Sox are back on top, we'll see the intensity back.
Diego Carvajal its mostly because these these two teams have not met in the postseason in 10 years, once they both are in, the rivalry will be back.
we will always hate the yankees. the rivalry will never die. but yes both teams are sort of rebuilding.
Someone even fell asleep at a Red Sox-Yankees game lol. Looks like Boston is rebuilding this year, as the Yanks just smashed us last night.
In recent years both teams have won world series - and most fans are 'grown up' & have a life.
I'll always remember Manny playing like an absolute psycho this game. Swinging at garbage pitches, starting fights. He really was on one that night.
Such venom, come on people. This was a decade ago. The Yankees got more than their measure of revenge against Pedro in 2009, and the Sox finally won in 2004. It's history.
"i just tip my hat and call the yankees my daddy" - Pedro in 2004
THIS was a rivalry!
Gotta love the unfair Pedro hate from the announcers. Sure, in hindsight, maybe not a good idea to throw Zimmer down like he did, but you cannot say he wasn't defending himself. Zimmer charged him. Zimmer threw a punch at him. Zimmer started the fight. You cannot expect anyone to just sit there and let another man punch him in the mouth. They're gonna do something to stop it, and Pedro could have been a lot harder on Zimmer if he wanted to. But yeah, of course it looks bad at first sight.
you ok!? zimmer was 72 years old. pedro was like 33 at the time. he wasn't attacked by Zimmer. he stood there and let him come to him. he couldn't have moved away!? Zimmer had a metal plate in his head from being hit by a pitch. that's why he took offense to that weasel saying he was going to hit someone in the head. Zimmer was a senior citizen, the charges are much harsher for abusing a senior citizen for a reason.
Right the old man deserved that screw it even if your 72 82 92 if your tough enough to come at me than be tough enough to get was coming ljs
I really love college and mlb baseball I practice playing I love baseball!!!!!!!! I love the red Sox and Phillies u guys!!!!!!!!!!!!
If Pedro wanted to really hurt Zim, he would have done a lot more than push him away people.. Zim should not have come after Pedro. Yet, Pedro should have been less demostrative. For some of you that means he should not have pointed to his head and excited everyone. Classic moment in Yankees vs. Red Sox lore, best.
Exactly. What the F is Zimmer doing trying to fight anyone?? Coaches during these scrums are supposed to try to keep things from escalating, not starting fights with players. Zim always made situations all about him, he was a jerk. He wrote a book about Clemons beaning Piazza, and said "What, was Piazza the first guy ever hit??". Yeah, when it's your pitcher hitting guys in the head, no problem. When it's your guy getting hit, let's fight. What a tool.
They should’ve suspend Pedro Martinez for whole postseason
Watching in 2021... I miss Buck and McCarver calling the ALCS and WS.
Enrique Wilson batting lead off (.230 batting average, 3 HRs 15 RBIs) over Alfonso Soriano (.290 batting average 38 HRs 91 RBIs) was always puzzling to me. I get the numbers that Wilson had against Pedro but still....
so doesn't it make sense? if wilson gets on base then the power bat of Soriano is hitting with him on base.
@@GuidoLuzzi yeah makes more sense now that I really had to think about it.
The Yankees and Astros are sort of building a nice rivalry that started in the 2017 ALCS and now we are playing them again in this year's ALCS..we are playing them tonight game 6..go Yankees!! One game at a time
When baseball still mattered
As a Red Sox fan this is the best rivalry in baseball
Its so funny because Don Zimmer is the one that first attacked Pedro lol! In no way should he have thrown him down...but what the hell was Zimmer thinking trying to punch Martinez
Then the next inning he comes to the top step to grill Pedro, guys a clown.
Thank you so much for the upload!!!
Pedro Martinez: a true class act, the epitome of Boston Baseball. Throws a 72 year old man to the ground.
ZIMMER SHOULD HAD STAYED IN DUGOUT..PEDRO THREW HIM LIKE A CURB BALL..ZIMMER TRIED TO HIT PEDRO..U WOULD HAD DONE SOMETHING..
Clemens would have done much worse to Zimmer if roles were reversed. Go back & look at a bench clearing incident when Clemens was in Toronto these same Yankees who defended him over the Piazza garbage were ready to fight him.
NoTeaBaggers You’re a moron. Zimmer came at Pedro you dumb fuck Yankee pos fan. Fuck the Yankees and you
Look at all of these Bostonians sticking up for their beloved Pedro. Where is Pedro now? In the toilet? Zimmer had a long and outstanding baseball career, first as a player and later as a coach. Pedro is now a nobody. He was always a punk. His baseball life is over.
PaidRussianTroll you’re an idiot
Baseball is pretty awesome right now.
You've got a guy who's threatening to put up back-to-back Triple Crown seasons, an unprecedented feat.
You've got some INCREDIBLE pitching going on all around the league.
Yeah, I miss the intensity of the Sox-Yankees rivalry, but we're actually in a period of some REALLY great baseball being played.
Lol
Dude I remember this series. Amazing time to be in Boston
10 years later and I still get chills.
20 years later now. crazy
20 years and 4 weeks later. Insane
In hindsight, there was SO much roid rage going on here. Epic stuff.
Yes, I also believe Don Zimmer, was on the juice!😂
Nah, just a bunch of intense people that cared greatly about the game. Just how baseball was played up until the last 10 years or so, especially in this rivalry.
🤣
@@e2go baseball was pretty dry in the 2010s but I think the 2020s is gonna be great there’s a lot of young talent now

Creative copout. Can't say I'm not disappointed. You were doing pretty well.
It's funny to see the people in the stands actually watching the game or talking to each other back then. Nowadays most of the people would be looking at their phones, texting, updating Facebook, Instagraming or Tweeting.... times sure changed!
+Tarina Tebo Or when the fight breaks out everyone stands up and whips out their phones, blocking the views of everyone behind them.
Back when the 2003 ALCS was going, Facebook didn't exist. God it seems like an eternity
+Cwmbran1984 DId MySpace exist then? It was annoying after a while.... omg Myspace.... anyone using it still?? LOL
Tarina Tebo
No. Myspace was 2005. This was 2003
Some of my favorite baseball.
The "Infamous" Popeye brawl game :)
3:21 No wonder Enriqe was shaking his head and saying "This going to be a LONG Game" with Strikes called Like That!
2003 = Greatest Year Ever.
McCarver obviously can't speak Spanish. Pedro was pointing at his head and yelling at Posada "I'm gonna remember what you're saying" he wasn't saying he was going to hit him in the head.
Earlier in the year when Roger Clemens decked Kevin Millar, the next day Pedro drilled Jeter and Soriano, walked off the mound pointing at his head and looking at the Yankees dugout. Same thing.
KHayes666 Pedro: I’ll hit you in the Head Jorge: do it Pedro I like to see you try pounding me in the Head I’ll pound you in the Head back the 2003 ALCS between the Yankees & Red Sox will go down in History as the MLB ALCS with Drama because Trouble n Drama occurred in the 4th Inning when the Yankees & the Red Sox went at each other & in the 9th inning another Incident Happened with a Red Sox Fan going into the Yankees Bull Pen to start Trouble
Thank you i almost had to watch this whole thing
Back when Johnny Damon was actually cool!
Baseball at its peak. Miss these years
Wait so Zimmer charges, Pedro pulls the old "ole" thing on Zimmer, and Pedro is the bad guy? Pedro could have hit him, but he sidestepped, and helped Zimmer to the ground.
Many many people have blogged on different sites on the internet about New England sports fans. While I do admire their passion, at the same time they can be the WORST of the worst and this youtube video displays that very well.
You can pitch hitters inside & there's not a damn thing an umpire can do about it, just so long as you don't hit em. Its called baseball.
One of my favorite games ever..will be a long time, if ever, that this rivalry will be as heated as it was back in '03 & '04..
As a mets fan, I thank Pedro for putting zimmer in his place.
mets stink lol..and pedro is a lil wussy
As a Yankees fan, I thank the Yankees for putting pussy Pedro in his place.....
How did that All time great line up of Harvey, Thor, etc work out. All of those World Series ...OH...I'm sorry...LOL
Ms. Felony Strutter fuck you loser
Nick Johnson's catch off Ortiz in the 9th saved the game.
Big Papi was like wtf Pedro why do u have to do that to Don
Dude all of the Yankees look like monsters! huge!
1:04:27 Don Zimmer: Oh, I'm gonna charge Pedro to cause some drama, and there's NO WAY I can get hurt!
1:04:30 (Pedro throws Zimmer to the ground) Don Zimmer: I got hurt!
1:04:27
1:04:30
P.S. That view they show from above at 18:55 (but under the roof) along the first base line (behind the Red Sox dugout) is the exact same height my mother and I had but from the Yankee on-deck circle and that's why it was so easy to detect Zimmer making his way across the field as every other Yankee uniform was kind of stationary when the benches had emptied onto the field of play.
Zimmer attacked Pedro. He was defending himself. I mean, what would you do if a cow started charging you.
Zimmerman was wrong for attacking him but throwing a old man that’s twice your age to the ground by the head is a bit much. Dick move but I suppose it just speaks volumes about who he is as a person. Class act all the way
mizza9595 Dee you’re an idiot
36:21 Looks like they are back together once again.
Tim McCarver is the worst.
Good times great ⚾️ baseball ⚾️ those days are gone😥😢😭
Nah they're coming back soon, don't lose hope.
