I went to the game the day before this with my dad when I was 9. I remember el duque getting injured when he was warming up in left field and I was so disappointed. But then the Yankees hit a ton of home runs and it turned out to be a day I'll never forget.
Pedro Martínez the best pitcher to ever played in mlb, this guy played when everyone was taking steroids and still striking them out with no problems. #pedroelgrande
I think he used steroids during his career on the expos. He said he was offered it and saw other players on the team doing it. Steroids will create more strength and longevity during games
Inning for inning...Yes. Other pitchers were capable of pitching far more innings for their careers and per season. To me that keeps him slightly behind some other alltime greats....like Clemens, or Unit. But his peak was probably the best.
I was outside the park until 4th inning but bleachers tickets never lower from $40 ($8 was regular price). I ended up watching it on TV, at my dad apt, like 7 blocks away from Old Yankee Stadium.
instant classic. thanks for uploading this. I've wanted to watch it again ever since they actually played the game because I didn't see the whole thing the first time around.
Funny enough - I've wanted to watch it again ever since they actually played the game because I DID see the whole thing the first time around. I was just a baseball-obsessed 8-year-old kid who finally got to watch his two favorite pitchers go head-to-head in prime time without having to go to bed because we didn't have school the next day. It was everything I could have imagined and more. Thanks for uploading @gibomber
I saw this for first time on espn classic in 2004 at 5 am when I was on ecstasy all night. during the epic Yankees red Sox 2004 alcs... this game was played during a rain delay. unbelievable

Pedro the greatest to ever do it, peak of the roid era he pitched the greatest seasons of mlb history, and don’t tell me it was just his peak, his career era+ is only topped by Rivera, Kershaw, and degrom, one of them was a closer who threw less than half the total career innings as Pedro, and two of them haven’t even finished there careers yet. Even better career whip is only topped by 3 guys that played in the dead ball era, again Rivera degrom and kershaw, and chris sale, who’s still in the league like the other two. This dude had 5 pitches he could get you out on, and one of them was prob the nastiest changeup of all time. Coldest motherfucker to ever step on the mound, stoic as one could be playing the most stressful position, he didn’t care what the last batter did cause he knew he would get the next guy. Watching him when I was a kid I knew it was something special but I didn’t know what it was I was seeing, but I was really watching the goat do his thing. And again this man played in the PRIME OF THE STEROID ERA. PRIME BONDS, PRIME A ROD, PRIME MCGWIRE, PRIME SOSA, PRIME GIAMBI, PRIME CANSECO, PRIME GRIFFEY. I DONT WANT TO HEAR IT. this is from a lifelong yankee fan, he was different.
That strikeout of Nixon in the 1st inning was insane. That ball was like a foot off the plate and the catcher didn’t even frame it bc he was set up down the middle and omfg that was a bad strikeout call.
That's the kind of strike zone that the Yankees got during that time period. They had good teams but they also got lots of help for their pitchers by the umpires.
so ananoying how the umpires always taint amazing pitching performances with their mockeries of pitch calling. not even close to the plate..... not even trying to hide it........... the pitchers did not need this advantage, i bet u they didnt ask for it. and i love having umpires over instant reply. but this was blatent game fixing as always in old big games like this. just like football and hockey too
I was at this game I was about 10 years old my first and only game I been to at old yankee stadium. Something I will always remember!

I don’t think the Yankees have had an attendance of that much since those days. There can attendance has dropped that’s for sure

Besides the 1999 all star game performance. This was by far the greatest pitching matchup I've ever seen
Do you think baseball is better today than it was back then?

I can totally understand how hard drugs like cocaine and meth are critical for pitchers to deal like this
both these guys had total command and control for 9 innings agaisnt the toughest lineups, throwing at top speed. has to be coke or meth
I was lucky enough to be there. Unforgettable
Martinez und Clemens...my most favorit pitchers of all time. These 2 guys were amazing!
but roger shouldn’t be a hofer. you will also know the reason why he can’t be it..

What was the delay for in the middle of the 6th.
The home plate umpire was hit hard on his knee by a foull ball and he was forced to leave. 3 umpires from that point ...
Parami Pedro Martínez esbuen picher
At the very beginning jester comes up and the words across the bottom said cheater. So appropriate. Still couldn’t hit Pedro.
When did Jeter ever cheat? And he had a 342 batting average against Pedro so I would say he hit him quite well.
