@@QuiltHoncho I guess Schilling & Johnson, who peaked in their late 30s were just naturals huh? Smoltz? Kevin Brown? Maddux?
All of those guys were great at 34+(more so than Clemens)....bc 34 isn't old for a pitcher. As long as you aren't injured , a 33 yr old pitcher of that caliber will be in their prime, and will have a decade of experience to rely on.
33 isn't old. Anyone who thought Clemens was done at 32 or 33 was, and still is a total moron. Dude had multiple DL stints in 93 and 95. So those 2 years were mediocre.
1994 he led the AL in ERA, and 1996 he led the AL in strikeouts and had 7.7 WAR and struck out 20 in a game. There was no "decline" in Boston, dude was just banged up in 93 & 95.
He declined from an elite pitcher to a very good and occasionally great pitcher when he became a Yankee in 1999 to 2003....after age 36, and when he was already about 15 yrs and 3300 innings deep.
But the idea Clemens was done at 32 or 33 was laughable nonsense then, and still is now. Only old idiots who look at pitcher wins and losses say dumb shit like that.

Clemens momentum from ALCS I fully believe pushed this start and his 2001 season. Really up until second half of 2000 he had been eh as a Yankee other 99 WS. This started what end up a 1 year plus run for him.
I give Hampton credit because even without his best stuff he fought.
Always thought Todd Zeile was an underrated solid pro. The mets had a better team next year but injuries doomed them in. Made a run post 9/11 but too late. Goes to show you timing is everything.

Remember Joe Torre's press conference after the game? He became so angry with the reporters constantly asking him about Clemens' act in the first inning that he almost walked out on them.
Although Torre didn't condone Clemens' bat throwing incident he told the reporters that it was simply emotion that played the part. He said that because it was a World Series game
that Roger was more pumped up than ever.
Even Clemens himself kept claiming that he was emotional during that play.

It was weird as hell but they explained it a million times, dude was all pumped up (as always) and flung the bat away, not realizing Piazza was trotting towards first. Definitely some bizarre meat head shit by Clemens but so overrated.....hell the double knockdown to ARod the week before was a bigger deal. Piazza even said that Clemens didn't have an aggressive look on his face when it happened...

@@Tremonti4ever Curt kind of dug his own grave when it comes to HoF. His stats are there, no one would argue that. But since he just had shout nonsense all the time, that is what people will generally remember him for. A great player that turned out to be a loud and proud ignorant joke.
If it’s just about stats, people can just extract a list of players with the best WAR and call it a day. There are plenty of players with HoF players that never got inducted, and plenty of players with not so special stats that are in it.

    • @Tremonti4ever

@@WiffGiff The fact remains it is SUPPOSED TO BE about ON FIELD PERFORMANCE and NOTHING MORE. I’m not saying I agree with everything he has said but I tend to agree with MOST of it. The truth is the fact that he’s a straight, white, conservative, male (as well as a christian which I as an Atheist find disappointing more than anything) and he has the balls to say whatever he believes bothers leftists (which the majority of the BBWAA are) which is why they refuse to acknowledge the TRUTH. If he came out and proclaimed his love for Beijing biden and his support for the left’s move towards communism he would’ve been in already. Has he said some things maybe he shouldn’t have? YES. So has just about EVERYONE. I’m not going to start going into all the things people on the left have said that are morally reprehensible because frankly I don’t have that much time nor do I think it would do any good. One thing I’ve learned dealing with people who disagree with the “right” is, they’re not interested in FACTS OR TRUTH. They care about their narrative or whatever they WANT the truth to be. Anything else is completely irrelevant to them. I feel sorry for people like that but then I remember it is THEIR CHOICE to remain ignorant and uneducated (which is why they watch The Communist News Network formerly known as CNN). I will never be a full blown conservative because although I am a fully disabled combat veteran, I am a loud and proud Atheist and I believe in a woman’s RIGHT to choose!! Those are two automatic disqualifications. I am a proud American which obviously means I’m NOT a communist/leftist aka formerly known as “democrats” because they are ANTI-America(n)

Ryan would have been the best ever if he didn't walk a shit ton of guys. Ya don't think its a big deal but it really negatively effected his run prevention and ERA. He leads all time in H/9, and top 5 K/9 and HR/9, but his walks were a horrible 4.7/9.....which is the only reason he didn't win a Cy or isnt universally considered the best ever

Who ever says "Had Selig known about steroids in baseball in 1996 he would have done something about it" is completely false. Baseball's ratings were low and with the strike the entire sport needed a boost. Power pitchers like Clemens and hitters like bonds made the sport fun. They saved a boring sport that was being ruined further by a strike. I do not agree with the steroid use, all I'm saying is that Selig would have been stupid to step in, in 1996. Also they weren't banned back then so....

    • @stevenkramer4762

Piazza made the wise choice. He knew tangling with Clemens would not turn out good. Saying after the fact that he had regrets charging Roger is chicken shit. Especially after getting drilled in the head earlier in the season.

Also it was quite obvious players were changing physically and talent wise. When 3 guys are chasing a homerun record that hasn't been touched in decades, that's sort of alarming. If you were commissioner and that's your business your job, you need to keep the MLB afloat, and they sport starts becoming popular... We would all like to say we would step in, and some of us would, but business wise that's a stupid choice, and Selig is not a stupid business man. Just look up his sketchy past history.

At cheating. Amazing they whine about Astros cheating but it’s okay they cheated on 96,98,99,00,09. Amazing Clemens didn’t get tossed which is when you realize this series was fixed. It reminds me of KKK member Chase Utley taking out Tejada who was facing CF trying to injure on purpose. Joe Torre openly said he wanted the Dodgers to win.

They should have let Clemens finish the shutout. This is why baseball sucks today. You can see the decline of the game in the ninth inning of this one - a total travesty. Rivera being asked to pitch with a huge lead and he just grooves balls that got hammered.

    • @humanbeing2420
      @humanbeing2420 5 місяців тому +1

It's actually not clear that he threw it directly at Piazza. It was a foul ball that had rolled into the Yankees dugout. The ball wasn't in play, so Clemens didn't expect Piazza to be running down the line. He threw it aside and into Piazza's path. I'm not sure what Clemens was thinking, but I don't think he intended to hit Piazza with a sharp object. It was very weird.
