Coleco's Donkey Kong port is part of one of the most important legal cases in video game history. Nintendo had given Coleco exclusive rights for console ports of Donkey Kong in the US (the 2600 version was also made by Coleco). It was popular enough that Universal Pictures, owners of the King Kong IP, caught notice of it. Universal went after Coleco, claiming infringement on King Kong. Coleco caved without contacting Nintendo and agreed to give Universal 3% of sales of the Coleco Donkey Kong as royalties. Universal went after Nintendo after that, telling Nintendo that Coleco had already agreed to pay royalties. However, Nintendo didn't back down. By the time the dust settled in 83, Nintendo had legally eviscerated Universal and Coleco was fading with the video game crash. Howard Lincoln not only kept Nintendo from having to pay royalties, but it turned out that Universal themselves no longer properly owned the rights to King Kong. This positioned Nintendo at the top of the heap at the most ideal time, when the Famicom was preparing to drop and their potential competition in the market had all immolated themselves.

A lot of these ports are akin to someone telling you they can shove their entire arm down their own throat before actually doing it. It's an impressive sight at the technical level, you're left admiring the flexibility and how it all works. But the experience of just seeing things in action makes you feel uncomfortable and almost everyone is fine seeing it happen once and never again.

If SNES doom was made in 2023 it would be on a youtube video called 'How I made doom on the SNES' with a screenshot of the game and the doom guy's face with wide eyes and a big red arrow pointing to the snes logo and the video would be 7 minutes long with a guy with some random european accent explaining how he did it with flashy editing and that thing where the text appears word by word flashing up on the screen and the comments will be like 'bravo sir, you truly are one of the best programmers of all time' and 'wtf I wish we could travel in time and have this, my past self would have loved this'

Yoko Shimomura is one of the best video game composers of all time. As much as I loved seeing her play piano live at one of the Kingdom Hearts concerts, I wish there was a more overall concert of her work (her Smash Bros. arrangements, the Street Fighter II soundtrack, the Mario + Luigi soundtracks, Xenoblade…) There’s so much she’s done that people don’t even realize is her.

Had to go look up the fatalities for Mortal Kombat IV on GBC. Those are something else, it's a shame he didn't bring up a video of them. They were just the grainiest 8 frame FMV's of a generic finishing move ranging from "fuzzy blob throws fuzzy blob at other fuzzier blob and then fuzzier blob gets bigger" to "well shit subzero actually rips that guy's head off." They all then end with a blood splatter transition effect they paid a 6 year old at least half of a peanut butter and jelly sandwich (made with generic store brand ingredients) to make in Kidpix on his Mac Classic II.

Digital Eclipse (also known as Backbone Entertainment) is actually a fairly well-regarded developer for arcade ports to consoles (often based on actual source code), their Atari and Williams ports to the SNES are near arcade-perfect, they did all sorts of fantastic ports like X-Men and Marvel Vs Capcom 2 and Symphony of the Night on the Xbox 360, they just also made pure trash for portable systems
Also worth noting: Athena on NES was considered one of the worst video games ever made by Seanbaby, an early internet comedian and staffer at Electronic Gaming Monthly whose entire specific job with the magazine was to review and be an expert in terrible games.

I absolutely love the streets of rage soundtracks and hearing it reduced to beeps and boops on the dreamcast is dissapointing. The devs didn't emulate the FM synthesis at all. They didn't even try recreating the soundtrack with FM samples.
The dreamcast used CDs for the games, right? The devs could've ripped the music from the original game and use CD audio for the soundtracks.

By the way, there's a homebrew of Donkey Kong on the Atari 2600, it's practically identical to the arcade game other than the first level's girders aren't tilted and the level scrolls. It's completely amazing what skilled programmers can do with enough time.

... This despite the fact that the playstation apparently could've actually handled the geometry of the DOS version (as evidenced by the inclusion of most of Doom 2 and Final Doom unaltered, as well as the entirety of Quake 2 and MoH) but Carmack was insistent on the technical end of things.

@@warbossgegguz679 The PSX port slows down noticeably in the Doom 2 and Final Doom levels, and in Thy Flesh Consumed too for that matter, as those were not cut down nearly as much.
The Final Doom port also cuts out almost all of Plutonia's levels, replacing most of them with maps from the _vastly_ inferior Master Levels. In fairness, the PSX wasn't equipped to handle the Arch-Vile enemy, or a great variety of enemies and textures in one level at a time, so it couldn't do much of Plutonia any good justice anyway, but it's still like expecting a steak and getting a hotdog when it comes to that part.
I like the PSX ports a lot, honestly, they're a good take on Doom overall, but I have my nitpick. The Final Doom port does support using the PSX mouse though, which is _hyper cool._

Handheld gaming was always kind of like that. It's kind of been lost to time, but the original Game Boy was despised by a good chunk of the mainstream gaming press for the majority of its run, much in the same way that many mobile games are looked down upon today. The GB had a strong showing in its initial few years, but then as the 16-bit console generation took off, it became a dumping ground for shoestring budget licensed trash. I remember reading year-end system reviews in EGM during the mid '90s where they'd lament how Nintendo refused to put it out to pasture and deliver something better.
Pokemon being such a late release in the US makes it kind of an interesting system from a retrospective point of view. It had a strong showing on debut and a strong end, but there were a few years in the middle where it was an afterthought at best.

Basically it's not a game an all-around game enjoyer like Vinny can play and immediately notice all of the reasons it's a bad port. Like it's easy at a glance to see why MK on Game Boy is putrid. But aside from the screen crunch, you can't really expect him to see why Sonic Genesis is bad or have much to say aside from him really needing chat to give context.
