And yet Jennifer Walters exhibits all the common traits of a "strong female lead": narcissism, hubris, arrogance, sense of superiority, condescension and constantly belittling others. I 1000% agree with Emily! We’ve become so obsessed with race, gender, sexuality etc. that real works of art never feel authentic anymore! I don’t want to relate to a character just because she’s a woman! I want to relate to a character that’s motivating, inspiring, brave, strong, and imperfect regardless of gender, race, sexuality etc.
Totally agree we can't have two heads of a house hold so to speak. I also get tired of seeing women of color portrayed so freaking manly. We are protective & we love hard but we don't want to be betrayed as amazon types at least I don't. I love when softer sides of women are portayed while the men be the providers & protectors. Men & women both have beautiful roles to play in life & when they work together & not against, it truly is a beautiful compliment of one another. We don't get all dolled up to be treated like a Ken haha.
I totally see her point. A strong female lead usually alludes to a character that is unrealistically perfect and so there is never any scope for growth or development. People like to see flaws and shortcomings so there is room for redemption.
I definitely have to agree with the sentiment. We need more female characters that have personality, motivation, struggles, like any other person. We need to stop making them generic and perfect. Because nobody, regardless of age, race, gender, sexuality, religion, country, or morality, can ever be perfect. We all have to at least put in some modicum of effort to get by.
Thank god someone else likes Korra. I have no idea why they keep saying “oh Aang is the perfect avatar, Korra isn’t!” Bruh thats a childish lie, he has done so many things that were the cause and effect of how the world is: the 100 year war, refusing to kill, etc. She is a character who is supposed to confront her own flaws about her own being and is supposed to do that, to show that the Avatar isnt the perfect human, but rather a being who is strapped with a responsibility that they have to confront their own being on what they have to do vs what they wish to do.
Ain’t no way Tatiana actually believes that “strong female leads” are bad when she was part of a scene in she-hulk where “I’m an expert at controlling my anger because I do infinitely more than you!” She says, talking about minor inconveniences that most women have to go through, while talking to the man who hated himself for years, tried to kill himself because of his “condition”, suffered from extreme PTSD, watched half the universe disintegrate before his eyes knowing he couldn’t do a thing about it, sacrificed his mental and physical health often to save people only to be called a monster, and lost most of the people he called family in the span of a few days. She was the main character in a show that made every male character either a misogynist or so unbelievably stupid that it made me cringe every time they were on screen. The only reason they did that was to make their terribly written female leads seem better than every man ever.
"Tatiana Maslani took the She-Hulk role because it was more focused on a normal (female) life than being a hero". I believe *every woman* should be *offended* that she felt that any part of that show was an *accurate representation* of a woman's life!
@@olmeno Her flaws are flaunted as virtues that she should take pride in. If there is no redemption from those flaws, no arc, how is anyone supposed to find her relatable?
I find it a bit hard to believe that Tatiana didn't know the direction the writers were taking her character in. They wrote her in to be nearly flawless at everything like superman
She-Hulk is definitely not flawless, strong physically (whether stronger than Hulk is debatable, it's claimed, but possibly debunked), but socially, she's a mess, and she's kind of awkward, which I think is the point.
@@r-giireactions2235 How is she a mess? Cause she can't date anyone as Jen Walters? 🤣 When did those flaws ever came back to bite her in the ass? Where was her humbling moment and redemption arc?
I wouldn't call She-Hulk virtually flawless at all. As someone already pointed out, her social life is incredibly chaotic and messy, partially because she's awkward. She also wasn't above being impulsive either. In fact, I don't think the comparison holds up because Superman isn't exactly a flawless character either. Maybe the Zack Snyder version is, but most Superman comics go deeper than just portraying him as a strong man always winning.
Emily Blunt is amazing i wish she was casted as Black Widow instead of Scarlet. Sucks she had to turn the role down, i love her in Edge of Tomorrow which is a good example of a strong female lead btw.
The problem with korra is that even though she has flaws, those flaws lead to consequences in the first two seasons that were either immediately resolved by someone else or she figured out some kind of out of nowhere solution. In the third season her flaws lead to her to almost die in the avatar state leaving her physically and emotionally scarred going into the next season. So she finally has to deal with the consequences of her flaws. But instead of spending time addressing and fixing those flaws she has to spend the entire rest of the next season, recovering from the consequences of her and others' actions. And at the end of it all her physical trauma is mostly fixed by someone else and her emotional/mental trauma is magically fixed by...the...one who traumatized her...yeah. So at first she never has to deal with consequences of her mistakes and flaws, and then she spends too much time dealing with the consequences of her mistakes and flaws. And in the end still has her flaws not being addressed and her problem solved for her.
Ripley from Aliens for me is the benchmark of a woman put in a tough situation who rises to the occasion without basically becoming a man. In fact her strong maternal instinct to save Newt against astronomical odds is the height of feminine power. Such a bad ass role and Sigourney just owned it. I remember the good ol’ days where women would be capable in movies and there was zero dialog pointing it out or making fun of men to build her up. She would just do her thing and it was what was going on, no girl power billboard required.
@@painvillegaming4119 how about before you make an assumption you think, I didn't mention Twitter, I could have also meant journalist or other celebrities or anything else heck Tumblur.
The top-down observation is right on. When the goal is "strong female character," that character exists because of the meta, a response to complaints about male led stories as a whole. And thus the character is ONLY "strong female character," instead of a character with x traits that's built up into a strong person because of their actual personality and choices.
Ironically "strong female characters" end up having masculine characteristics and because they easily overcome problems they never get to show the audience they're strong. Emotional strength isn't something that's easy, it's proven when something is hard.
Most of the squares have zero interest in a story, with characters that have flaws and redemptions from those flaws that they overcome through hardship, challenge, conflict and selfreflection. They just want comforting self-affirmations served with a silverspoon up their entitled rears.
I’m glad that there are some female actors that are talented enough to know that the audience wants characters in a specific show or movie to be good instead of a Mary Sue
Tatiana Maslaney has some nerve complaining about “strong female leads” when she also portrays one of the worst interpretations of a female superhero and sounds proud of it.
I'm pretty sure most actors/actresses would love the chance at a high profile MCU role. Tatiana Maslany is so much more than She-Hulk too. She *carried* Orphan Black with how great she did.
Honestly, Emily Blunt plays her characters incredibly well and I get it. If she got a character like Rei it would probably be super boring to do. She even played an actual strong female character that wasn't forced in Edge of Tomorrow and ti rocks, but when Hollywood forces it it's not the same

I definitely smell shite!
Let's also remember that the no-emotion no-flaws character is not only non feminine, but also non human. Everyone always calls it out when they do it to female characters, but never call it out in male characters, like it's normal for a 'strong male character' to be emotionless and flawless. People say they're trying to make the female more masculine, but is lack of emotions and personality a masculine trait? If it is, it's not a very good one.

Thank. You. This is just another reason why Emily Blunt is my favorite actress. She doesn't play these invincible, all knowing plot armored filled female protagonists like most films. She actually plays characters with real depth.
I personally dislike the way Hollywood use ‘woman’ as a personality trait to cover up lazy writing. Capable female characters before 2010-15 were much better
I kinda agree with her. Strong female lead makes people think of an archetype instead of a range of different personalities that fall under the umbrella of strong female lead. The only thing I'm confused about is if deadpan or showing little emotion is actually masculine. Masculine and feminine are starting to show some range but everyone is grouping stoic female characters as masculine. There are women in Hollywood who present as very stoic and serious but still laugh and cry like everyone else. I think we need to just expand what strong means cause I don't mind stoic women on screen and I think femininity is more than laughing and smiling.

I agree. That was one of the best portrayed 'strong female lead' roles of recent times. 👍
Ahsoka Tano is another great example. Speaking of the Star Wars universe. She actually started off as a unanimously hated character in the early seasons of the Clone Wars show. Dave Filoni has said that he wrote her to be unlikable intentionally, and that her arc was deliberate. Ahsoka is now one of the most loved characters in Star Wars overall.
Yeah, but now she’s the most overused. I hate to say it, but I am tired of all the Ahsoka Tano additions in the new ‘Star Wars’ shows. She DID NOT need to be in ‘The Book of Boba Fett’.
@@stormtraitor6545 Fair point. But I blame Disney for the oversaturation. The character and her arc still hold up imo. Her eps in 'Tales of the Jedi' were really good.
@@stormtraitor6545 To be fair with the Boba part, she wasn’t the only character that shouldn’t been in that show. I get Cad Bane and Mando himself but Luke, Grogu, Ahsoka, R2, the other Mandalorians in EP 5 and should’ve been saved for Mando S3. Grogu coming back too soon after going with Luke was another problem and made the S2 ending less impactful.
And yet Jennifer Walters exhibits all the common traits of a "strong female lead": narcissism, hubris, arrogance, sense of superiority, condescension and constantly belittling others.
Any normal media would treat those as flaws that need to be addressed, but for She-Hulk, it was everyone else who was flawed, and Jennifer was endlessly rewarded and praised.
No idea what Tatty's on about.

Well said 👏 it’s important to be strong but having flaws is a lot more relatable. Emily Blunt is too underrated.
Wow! Emily Blunt gets it right!!
Bro exactly that’s the issue with strong female leads, they need to have flaws to be good characters
And I just gained a whole bunch of respect for one person in Hollywood
and she is 100% correct!!!
"Tatiana Maslani took the She-Hulk role because it was more focused on a normal (female) life than being a hero".
I believe *every woman* should be *offended* that she felt that any part of that show was an *accurate representation* of a woman's life!
Her character is flawed though do maybe the problem isn't as one domensional as people want to paint it.
what part about her character is not representative of a woman's life? 👀
@@olmeno well yes but i don't think her flaws were really intentional by the writers
Are you a woman? Cuz I'm ok with her.
@@r-giireactions2235 definitely not stronger than hulk lol
I wouldn't call She-Hulk virtually flawless at all. As someone already pointed out, her social life is incredibly chaotic and messy, partially because she's awkward. She also wasn't above being impulsive either.
In fact, I don't think the comparison holds up because Superman isn't exactly a flawless character either. Maybe the Zack Snyder version is, but most Superman comics go deeper than just portraying him as a strong man always winning.

Emily Blunt is amazing i wish she was casted as Black Widow instead of Scarlet. Sucks she had to turn the role down, i love her in Edge of Tomorrow which is a good example of a strong female lead btw.
why did she have to turn the role down?
We can also just get rid of the idea that masculine or feminine belong to just one gender. People are people. They are different.
Most of the time, it isn't masculinity or femininity that's the problem. It's that character being a poorly written one.
What is needed is a strong story , good acting, something the film industry has forgotten
She is just THE BEST!!
Black widow is my favorites strong female lead because she shows personality too

I’ve always loved Emily Blunt and now watching this I love her more
Ripley from Aliens for me is the benchmark of a woman put in a tough situation who rises to the occasion without basically becoming a man.

The top-down observation is right on. When the goal is "strong female character," that character exists because of the meta, a response to complaints about male led stories as a whole. And thus the character is ONLY "strong female character," instead of a character with x traits that's built up into a strong person because of their actual personality and choices.

So now they have to come up with something new to describe the character. She just outed what that truly means. 😂
I like that idea honestly
It's what made Marvel so good, it's characters had flaws
"... Tatiana Maslany agrees..."
Uh...how ironic!
Give these ladies a prize, they are better than most Hollywood directors
Tatiana Maslaney has some nerve complaining about “strong female leads” when she also portrays one of the worst interpretations of a female superhero and sounds proud of it.
Leave her alone. It's not her fault. The writers did her dirty. Same way they did Andrew Garfield by giving him a crappy script to work with

I'm embarrassed for the human race when I see grown adults complaining about comic book characters

W Emily Blunt. I love her
I can agree with Tatiana. I do. She s right. And points for Emily. This was a strong argument
Just when I thought Emily Blunt couldn't be anymore perfect
