This was Janis's first concert tour since she was a teenager. Agorophobia and other issues kept her from touring. She opened the tour in Blacksburg, VA at Virginia Tech in 1976. The orchestra pit was filled with national press. The crowd was in adoration of her that night, playing 3 encores, asking us what to play for the third, Stars. Amazing woman, gifted artist:
Set me free. Lend me your charity. Achingly beautiful. Janis is one the most brilliant poet-songwriters ever. And quite beautiful in her younger years as well. Thanks so much for posting.
A few years later, when I was 14 she did a concert in the Netherlands. My parents took me there. She gave about 6 encores and she told the audience she was a bit grumpy because she had her period! Fabulous concert at De Doelen in Rotterdam.
Janis Ian has a beautiful voice and a true poet. Oh I forgot how amazing saw her in Philadelphia Pa with Billy Joel. The tickets were $6.50. I still have my ticket stub
Really love this video; thank you for uploading and sharing :) The times listed in the description are off; I updated the correct times below: 0:01 - When the Party's Over 3:17 - From Me to You 6:51 - The Man You Are in Me 10:12 - Boy, I Really Tied One On 13:48 - Tea & Sympathy 18:07 - Got to Get Up 21:09 - Roses 24:38 - Watercolors 29:32 - In the Winter 32:49 - Applause 37:03 - This Must Be Wrong 40:01 - Don't Cry Old Man 44:19 - Between the Lines 48:44 - At Seventeen 51:52 - At Seventeen (Part 2) 52:36 - I Would Like to Dance
Ⓥegan Ⓥampire 2 I really love #3 first, then #2. Of course, At 17 I knew growing up and love. It’s just that these others are all new to me, so I’ll leave the start of the ones I like the most right now. She has the unique factor of showing her vulnerability in her performances/songs, I gift for the ages!
I have been listening to Janis Ian's beautiful voice and those frank and powerful lyrics since the late 60's. Her sounds bring back the memory of great friends and many happy events in my life
I played Janis Ian's albums over and over until my stereo quit. She is a brilliant songwriter, singer, pianist and guitarist. I attended her 1976 concert in Portland, Oregon. I sat in the back row, off-center. The guy sitting in the next row in front of me was drunk. He vocalized! Janis appeared angry throughout her performance. I figured that was due to him. I kept waiting for an usher to usher this guy out.
I've loved her since I first was given 3 of her albums in 1975. I was so blessed to see her in concert later that year in Pittsburgh. I was 15 and that was my birthday present from my parents. What a gift!! I still remember that night and her wonderful voice. I was in awe. Thank you Janis for saving me "At 15" (not "17").
She had a lot of hits, When the Party's Over, Between the Lines, At Seventeen, Tea and Sympathy, In the Winter, Watercolors, and others were all great hits
In Belgium At 17, Fly too high and The Other Side of the Sun are quite well known. You are still right though, she's much more than a hit machine. A true poet, mesmerizing singer and more than a decent fingerpicker. Her early songs remind me somewhat of Tim Buckley. It wouldn't surprise me if he's an influence.
MY GRAND PARENTS FORBID "DATING " OUTSIDE OUR RELIGION", BUT NOT OUTSIDE OUR RACE. TOOK YEARS, & SOME LEVEL OF GUTS(COLLEGE) TO DATE "OUTSIDE RACE & RELIGION. MARRIAGE , ON THE OTHER HAND, WAS RESERVED FOR " OUR OWN KIND". I FOLLOWED THEIR WISHES, YET NEVER BELIEVED THEIR TENANTS. MY "KIDS" R TRULY "FREE"OF THOSE ARCHAIC PREHISTORIC BELIEFS & PRACTICES. LOVE "JANIS IAN" 4 EVER.
How one can be so accomplished by herself. Did she have lessons at home. Being born in 1950. She was no teenager at 26 what had she done for the 10 years? News?
She had not the fame she deserved, maybe because she was not so cute, but she was greater than a lot of others. I know that she´s still alive. Hearing her makes me so happy. I find peace and love in her songs.
Thank you for posting this. I've loved listening to Janis singing and engaging people like me in her beautiful music for many, many years now. Peace. 3:)
Ty, 🥰for providing this concert of Janis' music performance & her excellent musicians🥰 backing her up. I do wish to see it again but with better video quality of the concert.✌️
Another very talented, incredible performer, singer, artist, writer! As I listen to incredible variety from folk to jazz, etc., I imagine had Aretha done just 1 of these songs, especially the 3rd one, she would be as well known as Carol King, who is phenomenal. She reminds me of Carol in a lot of ways but not in any way that makes her like her at all. Hope that last part makes sense? 😊😊. Thank you Janis! I was fan when I was much younger and unfortunately did not have the means to have access to all your music but I do now and how blessed I feel ! You shine even still!
Oh those polyester collars days. To go out nights and dance in disco ways. To not understand how music plays, Every song changes how we move, how we behave. Never knowing how our path of life is altered and then we die.
This could use a better index for example about 1808 a new song starts (so far as i know it was never on an album) but a humorous song -which as far as I know it could be titled: " I need a man blues" a song that in view of her later personal revealations carries its own humor
In addition to this amazing performance, her opening act on this date was Steve Goodman. It is hard to imagine being in the audience for those performances.
The1EricStar Although Janis rarely performs "Stars", when she does, her audience holds their breath in wonder. Janis remains a Renaissance woman, an American treasure indeed.
Janis Ian, James Taylor, Carole King, Crosby Stills and Nash, Gordon Lightfoot, Cat Stevens, Simon and Garfunkel (and then Paul Simon), Melanie, Neil Young, et al. I was so fortunate while growing up and teaching myself to sing, play, compose and perform to have these ARTISTS to draw upon. Fantastic melodies and great lyrics. No studio computer generated "fixing". Just put it out there, win or lose. LOVE IT!!! At 62, I'll still play occasionally without any electronic enhancement, and have a great time doing it.
I used to listen to these songs a lot when I was young. My eldest sister bought the records. I loved these songs. Still do. As a child and from the cover of the albums, I pictured Janus Ian differently. As am older person today I see how sad and depressed she was. I feel she had a very low self esteem because she didn't like the way she looked. She seems much happier and content with her life as an older woman.
WOW !!!! She opens her soul when she sings.

An incredible artist who hit the truth in ever lyric and song. I admire her and am thankful she was someone whom I loved in my life.
Ok Janis, I've fallen in love - :) - Your the greatest and thanks for your music
Janis Ian concert! Have you been?? If not, GO! What a talented woman. The older she gets, the funnier she gets!!!!!! Thank you Janis!
Big fan since 1974 when "Stars" came out.
Janis Ian has a beautiful voice and a true poet. Oh I forgot how amazing saw her in Philadelphia Pa with Billy Joel. The tickets were $6.50. I still have my ticket stub

She's a much stronger singer than she appears to be. I saw her just outside of Madison a few years ago.
the fraility of her voice is what makes her what she is the voice of the downtrodden and the lonely
She a great artist great voice ❤
I am 15 and now i understand Why my parents are sooo... into this kind of music
I've loved her since I first was given 3 of her albums in 1975. I was so blessed to see her in concert later that year in Pittsburgh. I was 15 and that was my birthday present from my parents. I just saw Janis here in Santa Cruz, What an amazing women and humanitarian. Her voice has only gotten better.
Charles Goodwin How very lucky you were/are! Would love to see and hear her in concert!
I saw her at The Auditorium in Chicago around the time that this concert was recorded. Outstanding
The most beautiful music, sing in free America
Although Janis only had two really big hits, listen to her albums and you just won't find a bad song.
She had many big hits in Japan, so we love her.
She had a lot of hits, When the Party's Over, Between the Lines, At Seventeen, Tea and Sympathy, In the Winter, Watercolors, and others were all great hits
Her song "in the winter" is the closest description of loneliness I have ever heard. Unsurpassed

Thank you for the upload! Wonderful concert! Great woman!!

Thanks for uploading👍👏👍👏
This was the first concert I ever attended (the tour, at Celebrity Theater, Phoenix). Thanks for posting!
Wow! me too. Revolving stage! I graduated that year from Camelback.
Janis Ian was MY first concert too!
Same. This tour, in Sacramento, CA. ♥️
She is a great singer and fine composer.
I did not realize how good Janis is. Now I do.
I've been blessed to see Janis three times, and during 2 of those times, met with her afterward and took photos with her.
a one and only! from beginning to end and I hope it never ends, Go Janice! One more hit!
Magnifico concierto, gracias por subirlo, magnifica cantante, hasta hoy es de las mejores.
Oh how beautiful
so brilliant
so fine
Wonderful vocalist and musician!
She may be the best America has had to offer popular music in my lifetime. A real truth-teller, and a genius polymath, to boot.
i am sure i would of madly fallen in love with her
11/10

Would have liked to have met you back then. Could have been an interesting time. Those things smiles are made of... Love this music and those stories.
Where was the Capitol theatre? Was this Passaic, nj? Great place. Great shows.

Ty, 🥰for providing this concert of Janis' music performance & her excellent musicians🥰 backing her up. I do wish to see it again but with better video quality of the concert.✌️
Saw her when she headlined the Fareham Folk Festival - front row seat - and the whole concert was magical.....

sensitive and serene
Es una maravilla de cantante, música y compositora esta mujer, la sigo desde 1976 y sigue siendo de lo mejor, la quiero.

She is absolutely magic, allways in my heart.

¿Quien es la que hace los coros con ella?
U are my young me....Janis
Love ya forever
But for tonight turn out the light and hold me...
Doin the best she can with what she got!
I've seen here twice. Got to meet and interview her. Awesome lady.
You interviewed Janis Ian for what purpose?
In addition to this amazing performance, her opening act on this date was Steve Goodman. It is hard to imagine being in the audience for those performances.
Hard to believe "Stars" isn't in the set.....Best song ever!

you keep on doing what your doing, you are loving your past and I totally enjoy it too!
from me to you, is identical to can't find my way home by Steve Winwood
Spot on bro, you nailed it. Thx for pointing that out.
Wonderful!
What’s the song wake up got news for you ?
"Boy, I Really Tied One On."
A female version of Bob Dylan.
My thoughts exactly
Janis Ian is far superior to Bob Dylan.
Phenomenal
Pure Poetry
Thanks for sharing
beautiful thanks for the upload but your times are pretty off.

This is EPIC!!!!!
which ones ian
You can fall in love with me!!!...)O(
Hey lekker hoor
Can't get over the sensuousness of the long haired, accompanying singer. Anyone know who??
bpanther That’s Claire Bay; on many of Janis’s albums from that time. Married the drummer from Janis’s band, Barry Lazarowitz.
You want to really freak people out Janis sing a song about Christ that would blow their minds more than an interracial relationship .Just a thought
