Sting: A Winter's Night... Live from Durham Cathedral
    Recorded on September 19, 2009
Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner CBE (born 2 October 1951), known as #Sting, is an English musician and actor. He was the principal songwriter, lead singer, and bassist for new wave rock band the Police from 1977 to 1984. He launched a solo career in 1985, and has included elements of #rock, #jazz, reggae, classical, new-age, and worldbeat in his music.
As a solo musician and a member of the Police, Sting has received 17 Grammy Awards: he won Song of the Year for "Every Breath You Take", three Brit Awards, including Best British Male Artist in 1994 and Outstanding Contribution in 2002, a Golden Globe, an Emmy and four nominations for the Academy Award for Best Original Song. In 2019, he received a BMI Award for "Every Breath You Take" becoming the most-played song in radio history. In 2002, Sting received the Ivor Novello Award for Lifetime Achievement from the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors and was also inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the Police in 2003. In 2000, he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for recording. In 2003, Sting received a CBE from Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace for services to music. He was made a Kennedy Center Honoree at the White House in 2014, and was awarded the Polar Music Prize in 2017.
With the Police, Sting became one of the world's best-selling music artists. Solo and with the Police combined, he has sold over 100 million records.[7] In 2006, Paste ranked him 62nd of the 100 best living songwriters.[8] He was 63rd of VH1's 100 greatest artists of rock,[9] and 80th of Q magazine's 100 greatest musical stars of the 20th century.[10] He has collaborated with other musicians on songs such as "Money for Nothing" with Dire Straits, "Rise & Fall" with Craig David, "All for Love" with Bryan Adams and Rod Stewart, "You Will Be My Ain True Love" with Alison Krauss, and introduced the North African music genre raï to Western audiences through the hit song "Desert Rose" with Cheb Mami. In 2018, he released the album 44/876, a collaboration with Jamaican musician Shaggy, which won the Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album in 2019.

I believe you. My Mum who had passed to the other side caused one of her old sheet music to skip off the piano to my feet. The title of the secular music included my name. The words spoke of of seeing me from Heaven!

Sometimes I really think it’s true that ( as Hamlet says ) ‘ there are more things in Heaven and Earth, Horatio than are dreamed of in your philosophy ‘.
If you want a little consolation about your dad’s death read Julian of Norwich ‘ all will be well and all will be well , and all manner of things shall be well ‘. Her book is called ‘ Revelations of Divine Live ‘. Despite her name she WAS a woman and a medieval anchorite !
      Take care, Sarah.

Has anyone ever created anything more magical than this? I find myself listening in the winter months, then revisiting again in the middle of summer. It's incredibly mesmerizing. Sting is TIMELESS and what he creates here is a magical wintertime of crackling fires, gray days, leafless branches bearing a dusting of snow, and songs in minor keys. I'm about to knit and drink hot tea, all the while enjoying this gorgeous season locked away in the warmth of my home.

I still remember the wintry Sunday when for the first time I listened to all the tracks of the album "If on a Winter's Night...", here in UA-cam. I was in a forlorn mood that day and looked for some music - which could lift up my spirits - and found that album. It changed the way I see and feel winter. My homeland is Brazil and albeit all the years I've lived in Germany, it took a long time not just to get used to winter but, actually, love it. Of course, I loved to see snow falling down and how it covered the landscape the way is displayed in so many postcards and calendars, nevertheless the bitter cold along with the long months of winter always had been difficult for me. It was with great attention and awe I listened to all the tracks of the album and couldn't wait to buy the CD. I remember going out on Monday and looking at the trees heavy with snow, a field nearby cold and covered with iridiscent white and caught myself considering winter with entirely different eyes. I bought the CD and read Sting's statement about it. I like very much the way he approaches the wintry season, by now I can identify with much he has said. It goes without saying that now I love winter and go often outside, marvelling at the scenes offered and photographing inspiring images. That shows how much this real musical artwork impressed me. I'm impressed still.

The first time I heard this CD and watched this DVD - I was moved to such a beautiful state of mind. I went out the next day and bought the CD/DVD combo and never stopped listening to it. I bought my son this for Christmas 2 years ago and he thanks me for sharing it with him. He thoroughly enjoys it. Thank you for sharing this wonderful spiritual and poetic music. We are so proud that our Canadian Laila Biali is also part of his musical performance. Sting never ceases to amaze the world with talents. Thank you

Theres something about Sting coming back to his roots having had such worldwide fame and success and ran as fast as he could to leave where he came from and to get away from all the limitations he felt being brought up there and everything he didn't want to be,theres somehting about coming back to ones roots to see things a new and appreciate them in a different way and this is a beautiful way to do it.

ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE!!!!! I have been a fan of Sting since the very 1st Police Cassette back in the 70's.
A time when one could only hear a song on the radio once or (if your are lucky) twice a day if he/she did not own an Album or tape cassette.
Videos where seen once a week on Kasey Kasem Top 40 or Night Tracks (80's). Who remembers that show...?????
Sting's talent still amazes me as much today as it did back then.
    Thanks, Buddy!

We are so lucky to have had Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner (Sting) in our lives. There is no one else to take his place. He has embraced and internalized history and music in a way no one else ever has. This concert is the most amazing thing I've ever heard or seen. When he plays an instrument it is like when he sings. Something magical happens.

I loved this album so much I took it everywhere with me, especially driving up the cold mountains, and I eventually lost the CD. Haven't listened to it properly again since, but today is Xmas day of 2021 and I thought about it while driving. My servant who is sitting in the passenger seat, an old Thai man from the province, was mesmerized and fell in love with the sound he was hearing through this video immediately. We are not even Christian, but we can understand the winter spirit through his music. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you all.
