My favorite Minigame in RPGS is probably Chocobo Hot n Cold from FF9. It's very fun and Simple, with catchy music, and the rewards really help with the main game. And who doesn't like a treasure hunt? Every time I replayed the game I clean out the first Forest the very moment I have acces to it before continuing with the main quest.
Chocobo Hot N Cold was indeed awesome! Satisfying from both an enjoyment standpoint and a reward standpoint
Chocobo Hot n Cold is quite possibly my favorite minigame in the entire Final Fantasy series, and maybe even in JRPGs as a whole
This channel makes me want to play every JRPG that ever existed lol. This is one of those channels that bring me back to the early 2000's walking into a Target or GameStop and seeing all those games.
Hell yeah, that’s the type of vibe we go for over here. If only JRPGs weren’t so long so we could more readily play them all 😅
The execution of Triple Triad is so great because it ties back into what you're doing in the main game with how you can turn cards into more useful resources. I feel similarly about fishing in the Breath of Fire games, which can be a great source of healing items. I also appreciate anything that tests your main game skills in a different context, like the sprinting minigames in Wild Arms. I was never a fan of all the junk you have to do to proceed in FFVII though, which often has little to do with how you've been playing the game up to that point.
Quality of content in this channel is improving exponentially with each video. So good
Thank you, we’re always aiming to continuously improve our quality
My most favorite minigame was in Final Fantasy VIII when they set up a concert and we had to choose different instruments for each character. Irvine will always have the saxophone.
Ah yeah, that one was great too. I focused on Triple Triad so much for FF8 that I kinda forgot to talk about anything else from the game
So excited for this list.
Hope you enjoy it 👍
This channel is so underrated, it has great editing and content, congrats on how much you research to make the script of these videos.
It's a good channel it's just it's all about jrpgs that's why
Thank you, really appreciate the kind words!
This is such a fun watch. Nice job, I know all the capture for stuff like this is a nightmare but it doesn't go unappreciated. Keep up the fantastic content!
Thank you! Videos like this do take a long time to make and is why we sometimes have a longer wait in between content so it’s good to hear the effort is appreciated
Awww sheeeeit. I see a new Broduction, I CLICK IT
My man always coming through, appreciate it homie!
@@GamingBroductions You already know- appreciate what you guys do! Another banger 🔥
Same here!
The bike race in Chrono Trigger actually isn't mandatory. If you go to the right of the bike, you can go through a route that has some monsters and a chest.
I appreciate your videos and reflections on the games and topics your channel goes over!
Actually, you need to win the race at least once to have access to that area/continue the game, so yeah It's mandatory
I usually don't engage in minigames but when it comes to Yakuza I get so wrapped up in the storylines that I forget it's just a minigame lol.
Yep, very easy to do with the Yakuza series lol
I'm quite surprised that you didn't talk about the casino (slot machine) from Dragon Quest XI, because the tutorial for this mini game is huge ahah. PS: There is a fishing mini game in Final Fantasy XII. Really good video by the way. :)
I remember my older brother spending weeks trying to breed a gold chocobo in FF7 back when I was a kid. He only had the official strategy guide to go off of, as gamefaqs was barely a thing at the time.
And my favorite mini-game by far in an RPG is Suikoden 2's Iron Chef minigame. I just loved everything about it. I really liked the golf mini game in Dark Cloud 2.
When I was a teenager. I gave 2+ hours of my life to the lightning strike minigame. And holy hell. I felt a sneeze coming on as I was dodging and I can't remember the number but around 100 of them or so, I sneeze. I was able to keep one of my eyes open a bit, I dodged one as the sneeze was almost done/I was recovering. When I missed one from giving my brother a high five, from not messing up. I didn't leave him hanging but I never got that sigil or whatever.
Awesome, also I agree with the opening section of this video. While not every game HAS to have them (One of my favorite current JRPG series going right now doesn't have any which is Xenoblade) I always found that it added to the overall experience of the game.
ooh a video like this focusing on casinos in RPGs could be super fun too as a sequal to this video ^^
It’s always a good day when a new video drops!
Can’t wait to watch it when I get a minute
Hope you enjoy it when you get around to it!
@@GamingBroductions Of course!
Watched it last night, and it’s great.
I love this topic for a video.
I really need to play Like a Dragon.
Thanks guys for another great one!
Another banger of a video y’all👍👍 keep killing it and have a good day both of u :)
Thank you! You as well :)
This video's timing is cracking me up as I already beat FF7 Rebirth and have decided to go through and 100% the side quests ... and to do that, youve got mini-game galore.
The new Chocobo Racing is a game within a game. Calling it a mini-game wouldn't be remotely true and I love it.
The Gold Saucer is magical. 😂❤❤
Great video! This made me want to bust out some old final fantasy saves and play blitz and triple triad. Great memories with those mini games
Thank you! Blitzball and Triple Triad are without a doubt some of my favorite mini games ever if not my most favorite
When I make a JRPG despite being a Westerner I definitely want to have so much minigames so the player can just catch a breather instead of stressing from the Lore and Story.
When implemented well they can definitely be the perfect break from the main gameplay and give the player some fun variety
Hyped! Great list idea gents!
Thank you, hope you enjoy it!
The cup minigame from Suikoden was one of the easiest ways to get rich early (and fast) in that game.
Oh yeah, every playthrough I always get stocked up there early and am set for awhile on weapon upgrade money
Older Star Ocean games had Bunny racing, Colloseum and other great minigames..
16-bit era; Lufia Rise of the Sinistrals and its Ancient Cave? It's more of a complete rogue-like game than a mini-game, but it's there.
Yeah that’s a good mention, kinda one of those examples that falls under a grey area as it’s kind of a mini game but also kinda not really at the same time. There’s a lot of stuff like that that falls under that category so I chose to focus more on the stuff that are considered more of a pure mini game
I don't mind them if they are NOT required AT all that's what made Partners in time for that Mario RPG a pain in the ass since nearly EVERY boss in game has a REQUIRED mini game BEFORE the fight and some of those were TIMED based mini games.
That's why I NEVER beat Breath of Fires 3 and 4 BOTH have required mini games ON a TIMER.
This is amazing doc
Thank you!
*glares at the Dolphin minigame from FF7*
Love all of your videos man. My only complaint is that there's too long between them!
Keep them coming and I'll keep watching. Very much appreciated.
Thank you, really appreciate that! A lot of time goes into the research/editing and is why there is sometimes a longer wait in between content, our next two videos are going to be some list videos we should be able to crank out much quicker though 👌
@@GamingBroductions oh dude, I totally get it. I can see how much work you put in, that's one of the reasons why your videos are so great. Wasn't trying to show displeasure at the time between videos, was trying to say how much I like your content. Do what you gotta do and I'll keep enjoying the hell out of what you give us.
Duuuuuude! You used the OC Watermelon Remix at the BoF 3 segment!!! Daamn.... this took me back a couple of years
Keep on doing those videos and don't mind people's reactions to "controversial" optionins of yours... that's totally fine. Keep it real
YESSSSSSSSSSSSS I'm so happy to see this!
Hope you enjoy it dude!
@@GamingBroductions I did! I really wish more games or RPGs would use new mini games or just any mini games. I liked Fairy Village in BOF and the Golden Saucer in FF7.
Great video
Thank you!
this is such a good video, i can imagine it being a helpful resource for game designers
Thanks! If it is able to provide some help to any game developers that would be awesome
On the MMO front, FFXIV is loaded with a number of minigames. Jumping puzzles, mahjong, Triple Triad, Chocobo Races and Raising, dodging minigames, Air Force One...and even some season exclusive ones, like rhythm minigames for New Years, an old dungeon crawler a few years back for the anniversary event, etc etc. They've even wanted to add Blitzball to the game for the past few years.
Overall, minigames can just make an RPG even more fun to play, and we need more of them, a lot more.
Great video. If nothing else I've realised I really need to prioritize Like a Dragon...and also go back and play the toy car game I missed in the first one!
It’s seriously such an incredible game, I typed something similar in an other comment but it’s so refreshing to get a JRPG set in modern times with characters in theirs 30s/40s dealing with more relatable issues. It’s tied as my favorite RPG from last generation, highly recommend!
in modern gaming, I think FFXV's fishing game was such a stroll down memory lane with Breath of Fire
The business management minigame from Yakuza 7 took up like 60% of my playtime of that game. I was completely obsessed with it.
Lol sounds about right. I remember all my play sessions for like a week were devoted to just that so when I finally beat it and went back to the main game I didn’t even remember what I was supposed to be doing anymore
Man... Amazing video. I only miss FFXV Comrades mini game. One of my favorite. So good.
Thank you!
I think every game needs super elaborate polished minigames
Fun fact: the first card game mini game was in SD Gundam Monogatari and it was the first real in depth mini-game in an RPG. It was a Dragon Quest III clone that inspired Triple Triad. Also Blitzball is pretty much taken almost entirely from an NES/Famicom game called Captain Tsubasa.
The worst part of Tetra Master is that you have a limit of 100 cards which is exactly how many there are to collect, so if you're playing it just to complete your collection, you're really tight on options.
Oof I forgot about that part, that makes it even worse
LOVE the ITYSL scene
Hell yeah, love to see more Tim fans around here
Chocobo Racing in Final Fantasy VII is the first JRPG with minigames that I can remember playing for hours. I did some fishing in breath of Fire 2, but it never caught my attention like Chocobo Racing and Raising did. Not strictly a JRPG, but Final Fantasy XI Online had a really good fishing minigame I spent days of accumulated time on 😅
The card game in Persona 5 that you can play in the Thieves Den is also super fun imo
Nice a new video
You touched on Falcom mini-games but have you tried "Who wants to be a Mirrainaire?"? It's brutal on what you have to know to beat it
I also remember fondly of the Battleship Crab fishing and Air Race minigames. The latter having Multiplayer and offer bonus money depending on the Special Day you're playing on.
One of my favorites is the puzzle game within Wild Arms Alter Code F. I would play a full game of just that gameplay!
Suikoden 2 cooking was just so good. A full storyline sidequest that nets you more recipes you can use to cook items with. A fishing mini game to catch ingredients and a whole optional farm in your castle. Eiyuden Chronicle will surely do something similar ❤
Yeah it really was great in so many ways. Can’t wait for Eiyuden Chronicle!
You missed the mini-games from Legend of Dragoon. Blitz Ball from FFX is so much fun and really fills like what managing, playing and coaching a sports team would feel like in real life.
I recall spending hours playing the xenosaga card game! I used to play mtg at the time, and it was cool to get new cards without spending money haha
I’ve always had a passing interest in MTG but have never actually played it myself. Is the Xenosaga card game kinda similar to how it’s played or more something entirely different?
@@GamingBroductions as far as I can remember, there are some vague similarities, but it's mostly its own thing
great video 💯💯💯💯💯💯💯
Thank you!
Hangin with the boiiiis
Aside from the Yakuza games, the only other JRPG minigames I remember greatly enjoying were the Pokéathlon games from Pokémon Heart Gold/Soul Silver. I suppose Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door and the Trails-games have pretty fun side-content too.
It's not a JRPG, but I absolutely love playing Gwent in The Witcher 3, it genuinely never gets old to me.
I really enjoyed Vantage Master in Trails of Cold Steel 3 and 4, and I'm really looking forward to Trails into Reveries' robot fighting arena, it really looks like a modern version of the Xenogears minigame based on the trailer I saw.
I would play a full game based on Gummi Ships
I'm a sucker for the card games as mini games like Triple Triad, Tetra Master, and Gwent. They're very fun for me and I love collectathons too so that is a bonus.
The first card minigame was actually with SD Gundam Monogatari on the original Famicom. Thought it was interesting.
Driving a fork lift in Shenmue is my favorite. I also remember an addictive poker game in Xenosaga. That was a looong time ago..
Loved blitzball
Shoutouts to the best mini-game of this generation that sadly wasn't mention in this video, TIGER TIGER from Xenoblade 2. Such an underrated mini-game.
Minigames that makes the game world feel so much bigger and expansive and full of stuff to do really helped make these games feel like you're exploring full, living worlds. I wholeheartedly approve of them, and honestly feel that this is something that should be in Octopath Traveller III whenever it comes out- give each of the eight characters a minigame to do, it will push the games to new heights I say!
21:35 I"ve had a hard time trying to get that Venom Shot by playing the mini-game due to my visual impairment. The memories that show up as text makes it difficult for me to concentrate and find where the memories are located all over the screen, even with white text against a bright background due to ship's lighting. If the memories are surrounded by a blue background for a dialog, that mini-game would be a whole lot easier for me. But the developers of Final Fantasy X does not want to do that and the gaming industry as a whole does not care about people with visual disabilities.
Dang I didn’t know about that lightning dodge strategy, but I played and beat this game right after it came out. I did luckily have the strategy guide though and that helped a lot.
I can’t believe you didn’t mention the godawful marching parade in ff7
I loved the mini game side quest in FF7Remake in the Yuffie expansion, The Forth Condor tower defense, I got really into it from the start and didn’t move on to the first mission until I finished all the battles. I wish the game returns expanded in some form.
I think there’s a very strong chance it’ll return, most likely even expanded upon. It would be odd to spend that much time and money on developing an intricate mini game only to stick it in a small DLC
For the record, the fishing mini game in Legend of Legaia was the very best until Breath of Fire 4. The BoF4 fishing mini game is the best offline one ever produced and has only been topped by FFXI's original fishing system, which was a dream come true for rpg fishing mini game enthusiasts like myself. They changed it many years into the game, but there are dated private servers you can still enjoy it on (for free).
Tldr; Legaia/BoF4/FFXI fishing mini game = very addictive
Another fellow FFXI fan I see. Cheers.
I'll admit I'm not into minigames at all (chocobo racing is actually cool tho) and I tend to skip them, and I still have to understand the obsession with fishing in RPGs.
Anyways it was a great retrospective and really learned a lot, cool video
JRPGs certainly love their fishing that’s for damn sure. Thanks for watching, glad you were able to take away some things from it
Hahaha - "I can catch the football." - perfect
El mejor canal de UA-cam ❤️
Thank you for the kind words ❤️
The first 8-bit JRPG minigame is probably in Momotarou Desentsu - you need to tap the button quickly in one of the story moments.
Hey! Commenting just to say that I believe there's a song missing in the description. The one that plays during the "PS3 Era" part of the video doesn't seem to appear, and it's driving me crazy because I definitely know it from somewhere but can't just pinpoint where from.
Hey sorry about that! That track is The Hermit’s Garden from Trails in the Sky 3
Can Somebody Tell ne what the track at the end is from? I cant seem to remember what it was but i really love it !
Truth and Dreams from Breath of Fire IV 👌
It's funny to me that Yakuza Like A Dragon has the best minigames compared to other JRPG even though it's the new one in the series that fully embraced JRPG genre lol
I know it isn't an RPG, but I loved the mini games in Shenmue. My favorite was tooling around in the forklift, but there were a ton of good ones.
I love shredding snow on my cool board seconds after the love of my life is impaled by a twink
I'm with you on FFX's lightning dodging minigame. I hate it so much I built a device to do it automatically. Which took way more effort and took much more time than actually just doing the minigame myself, but it was also much more fun.
There's so many games that I think would just be less without the minigames. I can't imagine KotOR without Pazaak or Black Desert Online without the myriad of minigames around lifeskills.
They certainly add to the game’s lasting impression and memorability I feel
The Yakuza series has the best minigames, but in JRPG genre I like the best:Vantage Master (Trails of Cold Steel III-IV),Es'owa (Star Ocean:The Divine Force) and Mahjong (Yakuza:Like a Dragon).
And I would mention the erotic minigames of Yakuza series as well! (Videochat-Yakuza 6 and Photo Shooting- Yakuza Kiwami 2).
I remember breath of fire 2 on snes, it was awesome
i've seen a ton of hate for the chops quest in ffxii, which always surprised me, because it was my exact jam. though idk how much that necessarily counts as a mini game so much as a concentrated side quest.
I can see how it could be tedious, but it kinda felt like a puzzle, figuring out who needed who's help. And I usually don't like minigames.
My fav mini game (not from a JRPG tho) is Boxcelios from Yakuza 3, 4. Its kinda a shoot em up, but it's flashy, addictive and simple fun, i was enjoying it for hours 😮 Too bad it never got any digital release to play separately 😢
If Blitzball was a real time and not turn based it would have been rad
It would have been hard to do it justice back in the day but nowadays they could definitely make real time blitzball, there’s a lot of potential there I feel
Don't even get me started with those Final Fantasy X minigames!
The butterfly mini game in X is actually the hardest. The chocobo one is unfair. If the RNG is not on your side it's impossible to win
Blitzball (FFX) is a minigame that could be released as small indie game.. I remeber I on Oculus Quest played very similiar game in VR and online against real players.. its F2P game, but I dont remember its name, but it was really amazing..
I’m pretty sure that Blitzball is actually based on a real NES franchise called Captain Tsubasa which was only released in Japan. Well the first game was translated as Techmo soccer.
Pachisi in Dragon Quest is my favorite.
Suikoden 2 cooking minigame will forever be the best of all time.
I did the lightning dodging and chocobo races in FFX but couldn't do the butterfly collecting.
What is the song that plays during the Xenosaga portion
U.M.N. Mode from Xenosaga
Maaan every time I see Super Mario RPG come up, it just tempts me. I need to play it, Ive been hearing that the journey and characters are so charming.
I am very biased towards it as it was my first RPG ever but even on recent playthroughs I still think it holds up extremely well. It’s a timeless game with really fun gameplay and super charming characters as you mentioned, plus it can be beaten in like 20 hours so it doesn’t overstay its welcome. Highly recommend it if you ever get the chance
@@GamingBroductions Ill make sure to try and download a rom today when i have the time👍
Love your stuff man and not to be that guy but AYCHUALLY FF11 had fishing and it was kinda a mini game;)
Oh shit, I’m a filthy casual so never delved into the online entries lol but that’s good to know. My bad for the inaccuracy with that!
Out of all the mini games in jrpg the Catcher Chocobo is still my favorite, I’m enjoying it better than the story.
200 lightning strike dodges is just waaaaaay too many. it shoulda been like, ten maybe 20 at most
The cat 😻.
The true MVP of the channel
I didn't like Triple Triad at all in FF8. I'm fairly certain it was a presentation issue though. I think I just didn't like how bland it looked becuase I'm about 99% certain I played an indie rpg in the past 2 years that had a triple triad clone in it that I really enjoyed. Now I'm going to be spending the next week trying to recall which game that was.
Maybe it was Immortal by David Sanhueza. That game is fantastic. It builds on Triple Triad a lot, fixing pretty much all of Triple Triad's little nuisances.
@@leolightfellow It was Astria Ascending with a game they called J-Ster.
Mini games are pretty much a make or break within a video game. But when you play a video game which doesn't have mini games or challenges or missions it just feels too too boring. Mini games give the video game more personality. Especially themed ones.
I love when video games try to find silly exuses/reasons in the story to push a mini game on the player (it can be funny out of context)
I like when the mini games feel more related and connected to the story world, really creative ✨ But then again, any kind of creativity and ideas is welcome!
I just got kh bbs platinum the other day. I had to play the annoying mini games more times than i can count, i even mastered them completely, winning races, making ice cream, playing monopoly, fruit ball, unversed missions
As much as i was complaining and stuff it all felt like it's made with passion (even if some of it really suck) the visuals animations the music the ideas etc.. just felt like I've went on a complete journey!
Really, mini games do add up to the world of the video game and the overall experience. (Also It'd be much appreciated if the devs hid some ways to cheat the mini game getting high scores the unintended way, cause let's be real we'd all get back to something if we knew there's a chance )
I love the card game in .Hack series.
Yakuza like a dragon, essence of orbital laser. Dont forget that
There was a fishing minigame in breath of fire 1 as well, but i guess didnt make the list due to its simplicity.
I do briefly mention it during the fishing section, but yeah it was really just more of a mechanic and not really a true mini game in that entry
AH, sorry I didnt notice! Yeah, definitely more of a mechanic. Was still fun, but didnt hit mini game status until bof2. I spent soooo much time fishing there. It.... reely reeled me in! Haha. Anyhoo, thanks for another great video, AS USUAL! Have a good one!
@@16bitrpglabs68 I sea what you did there… lol thank you for watching! Have a good one yourself!
FF XII had a fishing mini game. I think the village was optional though. It's been a while since I've played XII.
