Definitely looking forward to the video on translations. Not many people cover them. Also kudos for mentioning eternal poison. Such great art in that one.
Random question perhaps, but I'm wondering whether you're familiar with 'Jade Cocoon' - or have perhaps even covered it. Old PS(1) era jRPG - Pokemon meets Princess Mononoke - just wondering if you had any opinions on it.
In regards to Eternal Poison: I used to work at a game store and was collecting late stage PS2 games, preordering them specifically to make sure some were sent to our store. I had read about the title before it came out in the states but I'm pretty sure it got stealth dropped or something because I never saw a copy, never saw an announcement, I just found out a few years ago myself that this was released in the states.
Hey Avalanche, cool thing about Shadow Hearts is that the creator is actually working on a spiritual successor to it called Penny Blood, had a successful kickstarter alongside Armed Fantasia, which is a spiritual successor to Wild Arms! Hopefully Penny Blood comes out as good or better then Shadow Hearts :D
Just remembering there is a full English patch for Front Mission 5. Also, for those who like the Record of Lodoss War for DC, the same developers made two games in the same vein for PS2, Shining Force Neo and EXA, and they are great too, extremely addictive
There's an English patch for Front Mission 2 as well, but they weren't able to insert all the text. Its a great game, thankfully getting a remake this year.
Glad to see Shadow Hearts getting some love! Probably my favorite aspect of the game was how grotesque and dark the enemy designs were. It really lended to the horror vibe that the game leaned into and made it feel all the more unique.
I remember playing Eternal Poison as a kid, and I remember Thage and the box art so well. But for years I could not recall the name! So I’m glad you mentioned it, going to definitely revisit it. Shadow Hearts was one of my favorite games, as well as its sequel. Hopefully that gets some love on your channel as well some day.
I never thought I’d see someone make a video on Legend of Legaia in 2022. What a gem, will never forget the rage of fighting the rot boss or the many battles with Songi. Good stuff. Curious if you like legend of dragoon as well
Eternal Poison looks interesting, definitely flew under my radar. The isometric 2D assets remind me a bit of Septerra Core. So this SRPG reminds me of a WRPG that plays like a JRPG.
I remember being just 8 years old back in 2000 and I had become enamored with RPGs ever since playing Final Fantasy 7 just a couple of years prior, and I remember getting into Gundam around this time and thinking to myself "Man, if only there was a RPG with mechs!" So you can imagine the pure joy I felt when I found Front Mission 3 at my local Walmart. Such a gem of game that was! Thanks for adding that series to your list, Jared! It's very deserving of being on it.
Still hoping Skies of Arcadia gets covered one day. One of my favorite games of all time, and right up Jared's alley being from the Dreamcast then ported to the GameCube
My favorite game of all time. I'm about to do my yearly playthrough(really every 1-2 years) own both versions but currently my favorite way to play is the GCN version on Dolphin/PC with all the settings up high. It needs a port so I can sell 2 of my DC/GCN copies. Hope a remaster gets retranslated as the U.S. version is very inaccurate, and the DC sound restored with the GCN content
Shadow hearts is probably my favorite jrpg of all time, I love the story (minus that one cutscene), the characters, the gameplay, I adore that the system puts all the risk on you, that you get to decide if you go for the critical and risk missing the attack entirely, I love that it's the same for items, even healing items, do you go for the extra healing and risk missing it and leaving your character more screwed.
@@ridjenite there's this one cutscene in the middle of the game that's voiced and a big production but it's this old lady telling a ghost story soooooo slooooowly And all cutscenese are unskippable

I know this is a weird thing to praise, but I love the explosions in front Mission 3. They might be low-res, but they've got so much grit and texture. It really sells the volume and debris of the fireball.
Thanks for giving Shadow Hearts some love Avalanche! Hope you check out Shadow Hearts Covenant and Shadow Hearts From the New World. Hope they remaster this series in the future
I was waiting for this one! Ive watched your previous video so many times I lost count. Something about your editing, the subject matter, narration, and the duration make this content so relaxing. Plus I shared a lot of the same thoughts and feelings on the games in the last video as you did. Can't wait to watch this a million times too.
Absolutely want you to do a fan translated video series. I was baffled when you stopped at front mission 4 and I thought no way does he not know front mission 5 was translated years ago, then you addressed not including many translations and I had a deep sigh of relief. consider your reputation retained 🙂 seriously though please do it and thanks for the countless hours of entertainment.
I feel like I'd have a great time with Chocobo Dungeon and Eternal Poison, not to mention the whole Front Mission series... and damn, I liked most of what's on offer, you sure dug up very peculiar gems. Thanks a lot for the video, it made my day.
You, sir, are my hero for covering the Arc the Lad trilogy/spinoff! I was such a huge fan of the series as a kid. I had my mind blown one Christmas in the early 00's, when my mom somehow managed to track down the Arc the Lad Collection (which had these really neat thumb-sized cardboard stands of the characters, and joystick "hats" on top of the trilogy itself), and even more incredibly she somehow managed to source a subtitled copy of the anime. I also totally agree about how JRPG (I'd argue a lot of Japanese media in general - unless the translation is god-tier - not because they can't write, but because of differences in information density/sentence structure between the languages) scripts suffered as a result of voice acting. Oh, and fuck yes please continue on with a Japanese-exclusive episode of this series!
Shadow Hearts is my favorite! It's such a great mix of Gothic horror and Jrpg, its weird and has such a unique system with the judgement ring. I love it so much and I'm so hyped for the spiritual successor Penny blood! Much love for covering it!
First of all, I'm happy that you're making content for us RPG fans who make up a small minority of your subscriber base. While I do love survival horror games, I do get an RPG itch here and there and am happy to see games i haven't even heard of. On another note, I'm surprised to never hear you mention fighting dungeon crawling RPG Ehrgeiz in any of these lists since you are a huge FF7 fan. Good, bad, forgotten, or over/underrated; i'd love to hear your opinion on the game sometime in the future!
Legend of Legaia's atmosphere was so damn creepy, no other game i played back hen had the same feeling, the music and everything about it was so unique.
Thanks for the summary of Shadow Hearts and Eternal Poison, I'm no longer able to play these old RPGs due to lack of time and these videos are the only thing left for me. 48:25 she looks like one of the main characters from Evergrace by FROM Soft. Wish they made something else beside Souls but times changed and it would be most likely not profitable or received well...
I bought a copy of Eternal Poison back when I first bought a ps2. I was far too young to really understand what a JRPG was or how it worked, so upon starting it up as a kid, I did not enjoy it. But I still have that copy of the game, and I still have my PS2. Maybe now I'll enjoy playing it as I'll appreciate it more now. Perhaps it's time to revisit it!
Shadow hearts has a spiritual successor in the form of penny blood. My favourite part of Arc the Lad 3 was actually a side quest, in the begining of the game you have to pass an exam to become a hunter and at its end you need to beat an examiner who acts as the boss, after you progress enough through the game you can take a side quest in which you act as the examiner and act as the boss of the test dungeon, i loved that, it gave a sense of progress that was and still is rare to find in games. I also loved that you were not the hero and that showed that the world didnt revolve around the hero and his quest and even normal people can contribute to its security.
"Has" kinda implies the game already exists. Hopefully, they'll pull it off, but from everything they've shown sadly I'm way more skeptical of it than say Eiyuden Chronicle. (Same for what they've shown of whatever the Wild Arms one was called)
I’ve been having a lot of fun with the front mission remake, even if the sprites look a lot better than this 3D version. The trailer makes the second remake coming soon look a lot more dynamic in its presentation. The remake has the same ethos as the FF remake in that it doesn’t hold your hand telling you some key things like not being able to repair broken parts of your wanzer, or that you can refit equipment in the field, even replace those broken parts. The start is trial and error as you have to worry about both your limbs being neutralized and losing the ability to fight. When that happens, you can’t heal up those parts (healing only repairs one section of your wanzer, so you need to be economical with which part of your mech to keep functioning). That said, I love it when it gets going and deciding which mechs to tune up and how, or who to send to the arena for cash or exp. Really looking forward to more releases after this.
Breath of Fire 3 and 4 never got the love they deserved. 2 is also great but you HAVE to use the retranslation patch, and the anti grind patch is nice too.
last video i commented about how i would've loved to see Legend of Legaia in it since nobody ever talks about it... :D love you, man. this game was one of the first titles i played back when i was a starry eyed child with a new PS1 i got for christmas. it always held a special place in my heart and despite knowing that there's many better rpgs, it's still one of my favorites of all time. i loved figuring out all the combos back then and felt like a genius when combining several combos with similar inputs together for a huge chain combo barrage. i still play it every few years or so and still knowing all those combos from the very start, which monsters to capture and use and the general ins and outs of the whole battle system makes it a blast from start to finish. i really hope some more people give this game a chance after seeing a bit of it here
Love the return to this series. RPGs are my favorite games ever. Side note: check out Chained Echos or Sea Of Stars if you want more old SNES style goodness. They both look sick.
Jared. This was an awesome follow up to part 1. A video that I’ve watched a dozen times. Also I love that Legend of Legia saw some love, that was one of preteen me’s favourite games
i gotta say, i agree with the lack of voice acting, it makes things more atmospheric and eerie, i think the SMT games excel in that partially because of not having VA.
Just welcomed the dog I'm dog sitting, cracked open a cold one and checked my notifications just to see this glorious video just uploaded. Common Avalanche Reviews W. Cheers Jared
Weird to describe Mistery Dungeon games that much and never say that they are roguelikes. Talking about this kind of game, I loved Azure Dreams as a kid. Great video.
47:22 That's not the case at all, though I can see why you might think that if all you've done is replayed Thage's story and not seen the rest of the game. Without delving into many spoilers, all 3 story paths are connected and each path reveals more about recurring characters. Once you finish all 3 and get the best ending in at least one of them, a fourth path opens up which reveals more story. Then a fifth one appears after that and finally a sixth final path which ties the stories of all characters into one bigger story. You can have preferences about how you like story to be presented in a game, but 'bare-bones' is the last thing I would use to describe the story in Eternal Poison. The style is unconventional, but the devs clearly put quite a lot of effort into it.
I believe this is the first time I’ve ever seen even a modestly-sized UA-camr talk about Eternal Poison! I actually bought it off Amazon a few years back just because the box art looked sick. I still haven’t gotten around to trying it out yet, but even just the mention of it makes me happy. Also, just ordered a used copy of Front Mission 4 off Amazon. Thanks!
the music for Arc The Lad 1-3 was done by the great Masahiro Andoh the guitarist for the band T-Square the man also responsible for one of the greatest musical composition known to man "Moon Over the Castle"
I'm always up for videos that highlight obscure and overlooked stuff to broaden my horizons. There is some truly great stuff burried beneath all of your Final Fantasies and Fire Emblems and what have you, and it ain't right that these titles go about unnoticed when they could become someone's favorite game.
All of this interest in old-school games getting modern remakes or ports (Front Mission, Tactics Ogre, Valkyrie Profile, SaGa games, LIVE A LIVE, etc.) gives me hope that the Arc the Lad series will get something soon. It's too good to be forgotten. At least give us Parts 1 and 2 on modern consoles.
I found that Shadow Hearts has weird screen transitions when using the PS2 hard drive to play the game instead of the disk. I could be wrong though. I can say I played it on emulator in software mode and there wasn't any problems with screen transitions.
Someone who knows Front Mission and appreciate it is a person that I would respect, you are doing a awesome work with this mini-series. About Arc the lad, always have been a some sort of sleeper for me, now I will give an opportunity on the psvita
I have a soft spot for Twilight of the Spirits. It was my first ATL game and something about how it adapted tactic games to 3D just struck a chord with me as a kid. But I can understand why it wasn't for everyone and the voice acting (despite having usually good actors in some roles) was awful. "I'm Bebedora" lives forever rent free in my head.
I absolutely loved arc the lad series. Picked it up back in the day from 'Funcoland' as I was weird and drawn to offbeat sort of anime stuff. When metal gear solid 2 came around and everyone else was up in arms about it I remember saying 'They Arc the Lad'ed it, didn't they.' Sucks I lost the trilogy in a house fire... thanks for the memories!
i just played front mission 4 and 5, i think i like 4 a little more, but i do love the part customization in 5 alot. i also like having the ability to somewhat customize your team a bit. you seem to have skipped 2 and 5 in this video, they do have an english translation now
The annoying thing about Twilight of the Spirits for me was when actually met the spirits, it was a nothing burger. "Stop the bad guy" was not a groundbreaking revelation, it was "no, what really? That's the reveal?" I thought we were gonna have a flashback at least but no
This is probably the first time I've heard Eternal Poison mentioned since not long after the localisation released, among the sub-set of people I knew who play JRPGs I was the only one who bought it so it sank without a trace, there's not really much to talk about when you're the only guy who owns the game.
Nice to see Legend of Legaia on someone else's radar, and getting some exposure. I had it back in the day, and always found it had great atmosphere on top of other pros you mention.
These videos always give me something new and this one is no different. Eternal Poison looks cool, I enjoy Ojou-sama characters that act above it all for some reason lol. Also Shadow Hearts, the designs, the world, and everything. It looks perfect for me. I'm trying to get that ASAP
Definitely think you should cover Alundra in one of these videos. Not really an rpg, but it has a similar aesthetic and the game (and story) is amazing.
I completely forgot about the story of Legend of Legaia, I only remember getting the monsters and leveling them up to be confused when I meet a level 2 with a different color scheme and thinking "is that one stronger, why is mine a better level and the same color as when I captured it?"
Maybe someone else mentioned this already in the comments, but there was Sten in Breath of Fire II that was also a monkey, and that seems to have been released 2 years before Treasure hunter G. Ponga is much cuter though!
The bit about Mystery Dungeon.. It's more accurate to say they play like the original Rogue, because they play exactly how Rogue plays lol. One could say they are... Rogue-like.
God damn, I honestly didn't expect to remember the sounds of Legend of Legaia as strongly as I did. That combat clip at the very end of the section was a massive blast from the blast. Loved the game as a kid even though I never understood anything about what was really going on besides the very basics of mist being bad =D
Good video, I'd argue that Treasure Hunter G did come out at the end of the SNES's lifespan since N64 came out the same year as the release of that game
This video is everything I always want and more. 2 games in and we already got two bangers. Arc the lad and Front mission. Jared get out of my head homie
Hey avalanche, really love your reviews, coming from one of those same "wierdo resident evil / silent hill avid fans", I really love your style! Was wondering if you ever have covered or would ever cover the JRPG Breath of Fire Dragon Quarter (5)? It got a lot of hate from diehard BOF fans, but being able to approach the game from an individual standpoint, I thought it was amazing and never wanted the experience to end!
Record of lodoss war kept me company in high school too.Thank god when i entered my university abroad i bought 2 copies of it,one pal and one NTSC for dirt cheap.I booted it up again last year and damn i experienced the same as before.
Very cool coverage. Love this format. I've heard differently about FM series, in that people prefer FM1, 3, 5 over 4. I've not played 3 and 4 but really enjoyed the DS version of FM1 (comes with antagonist side of story too).
I would love seeing you do a retro in the 3 shadow hearts game, penny blood is in the makings so would be awesome! Loved and till this day still play the game
Tons of great recommendations as always. I’m glad to hear Front Mission 4 is the best in the series, because it’s by far the most affordable! I got a sealed copy years ago but still haven’t busted it open yet. Maybe it’s time to change that.
Played front mission 3 on my vita and I fell in love with it. Just got the front mission 1st remake on switch and I can't wait for 2 & 3 to get a remake as well
An Avalanche Reviews JRPG video is in my feed, it is automatically a good day. Almost all of these are in my collection or on some sort of wishlist. Especially Eternal Poison, which I have seen exactly one copy of ever, when I was broke, and when I came back the next day when I got my paycheck, it was, of course, gone. The Arc the Lad games are actually all still available (for $6 each, no less!) on North American PS3/Vita, and Twilight of Spirits is available on PS4/5! Front Mission was great timing, since the Switch remake came out literally today, and it's been really well received, it includes the extra scenario from the Japan-only PSone version of the game as well. The devs have confirmed they're working on a remake of the second game, and are in the planning stages of remaking the third as well! Sadly, Chocobo's Dungeon 2 is one I missed back in the PSone era, but I definitely recommend the Chocobo's Dungeon game on Wii (which recently got a very comprehensive remaster for PS4 and Switch) It also makes me very happy that you brought up Legaia. The game has an eternal spot in my heart, and it's world and aesthetic inspired me so much. I even designed my own Ra-Seru as a kid xD (it was a turtle, btw) I'm always down for more of these videos!
I hope you guys get into this one. If not..... well..... I know where you live. So.....
And yet you NEVER drop by!

last video i commented about how i would've loved to see Legend of Legaia in it since nobody ever talks about it...
21:13 spritework is just gorgeous 😍
Legend of Legaia was my childhood man. I even memorized all the moves.
Congratulations 🎉

Back on the PS1 Era some of my top favorite games were Legend of Dragoon, Legend of Legaia and Final Fantasy 8 & 9!
Thanks!
the music for Arc The Lad 1-3 was done by the great Masahiro Andoh the guitarist for the band T-Square
the man also responsible for one of the greatest musical composition known to man "Moon Over the Castle"
I'm always up for videos that highlight obscure and overlooked stuff to broaden my horizons. There is some truly great stuff burried beneath all of your Final Fantasies and Fire Emblems and what have you, and it ain't right that these titles go about unnoticed when they could become someone's favorite game.
I really can't wait for your next list, hoping there will be more SRPGs I haven't heard about.
Congratulations 🎉

The game takes place on the shadow isle Mormo. Bell and ashraam base.

Congratulations 🎉

Arc the Lad Twilight of Spirits was one of those games i was addicted to when i was younger i loved it as much as i enjoyed the Legend of dragoon
Great recs, particularly Legend of Legaia and Shadow Hearts. Thanks for putting this together, I'm going to check them out.
i just played front mission 4 and 5, i think i like 4 a little more, but i do love the part customization in 5 alot. i also like having the ability to somewhat customize your team a bit. you seem to have skipped 2 and 5 in this video, they do have an english translation now
I feel like i've been at bat for Legend of Legaia and Front Mission 3 for SO LONG. It's so awesome to see someone else represent!

Love your RPG videos, and your work in general. A video about fan translation games sounds awesome!
As a big Front Mission mark this edition in particular got a big pop out of me. Great work as usual king 👑
A fellow man of taste and culture i see.
Fantastic video, dude! Thanks so much for this huge list of games for us to check out!
@avalanchereview648 :O?!
Thank you for Record of Lodoss War, it looks beyond amazing, never heard of it.
These hour videos are to savour .

But... that ghost story was one of my favorite voiced moments in any RPG! that scene has lived in my head for I over a decade now.
Me and my wife have been laughing at it for our entire relationship. It’s definitely memorable.
Front Mission 3 was my first foray into the FM series. Looking forward to the remake of the first game.
I’m not liking what I’ve seen of the remake so far honestly.
These videos always give me something new and this one is no different. Eternal Poison looks cool, I enjoy Ojou-sama characters that act above it all for some reason lol. Also Shadow Hearts, the designs, the world, and everything. It looks perfect for me. I'm trying to get that ASAP
Congratulations 🎉

I decided to look back at your channel after I binged it dry a while ago. It was a good idea.
I'd love a video focusing on fan translations. There's so many that I have missed over the years until someone brought them up.
Definitely think you should cover Alundra in one of these videos. Not really an rpg, but it has a similar aesthetic and the game (and story) is amazing.
I love Alundra. I’ll definitely cover it some day.
I completely forgot about the story of Legend of Legaia, I only remember getting the monsters and leveling them up to be confused when I meet a level 2 with a different color scheme and thinking "is that one stronger, why is mine a better level and the same color as when I captured it?"
Congratulations 🎉

record of lodoss war really killing it back in the day, hope the developer notice this hidden gem and remaster it with today hardware
In PS1 you literally need to buy a gamer magazine to know the secrets of the game.
As a legend of dragoon kinda guy, I've always wanted to play shadow hearts. Wonder if there will ever be a modern port of the series
Congratulations 🎉

There’s some serious heavy hitters in here. It’s stacked with good ones.
Just sat down to eat my lunch, what perfect timing for a new upload!

I'd like to see The 7th Saga on the SNES get some more love. Its a great game that got a rather poor US release but I still love playing it
Drakerider - Chains Transcendent. Never hear anyone talk about it. Doing a longplay walkthrough now to post on my channel when finished.
Loved and till this day still play the game
i friggin love this series

Someone calling Casp out on that Arc 3 opinion is gratifying like you wouldn't believe
Just got the front mission 1st remake on switch and I can't wait for 2 & 3 to get a remake as well
hey man, will you do a video about The Callisto Protocol?
really miss your horror retrospective (especially DS games)

Sadly, Chocobo's Dungeon 2 is one I missed back in the PSone era, but I definitely recommend the Chocobo's Dungeon game on Wii (which recently got a very comprehensive remaster for PS4 and Switch)
It also makes me very happy that you brought up Legaia. The game has an eternal spot in my heart, and it's world and aesthetic inspired me so much. I even designed my own Ra-Seru as a kid xD (it was a turtle, btw)
I'm always down for more of these videos!
