Ogre Battle angered me greatly for considering me Evil for training my soldiers to be the best to the point that the evil armies couldn't even hurt them. I would never send soldier into a battle they couldn't win if I could help it D: I believed that each of them had families to go home to.
The road to hell is paved with good intentions. Many of those soldiers became militaristic fascists who would inherit the nations and become ruthless dictators.
Exactly what i thought. Such quality videos and full of love. I can only imagine how much research or playing he did to make these videos . I hope you get big bro. You deserve more
Amazing video. I was just playing through Valkyrie Profile not too long ago, couldn't have been better timing. Y'all keep doing what y'all do, I'm loving these videos that keep the jrpg alive in the west.
I hope you enjoyed Valkyrie Profile. It's a top 3 PS1 RPG for me along with FF9 and Lunar SSS. If it was your first playthrough did you get the best ending?
Illusion of Gaia will probably always be my favorite game. It's cool seeing some love to some lesser known RPGs that came out. I've played a few of them like Paladin's Quest and RoboTrek.
I knew the artstyle for Wonder Project J looked familiar, so I looked it up and found out that the character designer, Toshihiro Kawamoto also designed the Cowboy Bebop cast and worked a ton of amazing other anime (FMA, Sword of the Stranger, Gundam 08th MS team, etc)
Awesome video. What a nostalgia trip for the underdog “RPG Machine” of the 90s. I discovered a lot of these games in high school and college thanks to “simulation” and internet coming into their own in the early 00s. Good times.
I was already planning to replay EVO when I saw this video. I've always thought that game did a fantastic job of creating atmosphere with its music and visuals and I'm very glad that I grabbed a copy back when it was released.
I actually do have a similar experience to your flea market story. When I was like 12 or 13, I went to this garage sale with my parents, and the lady had a bunch of SNES games for super cheap. My parents talked to the lady running the garage sale, and found out her mother used to own a rental store that went out of business, and was trying to get rid of her inventory. My parents found out where her mother lived, and arranged a time later that night to take me over there. The lady had hundreds of SNES cartridges, and was only selling them for like $2 a piece. I think I bought something like 15 games that night, some I had played before, while others I had never even heard of. Hell, that's how I first got introduced to the masterpiece that is Chrono Trigger.
Just Breed is EASILY in my top 5 list of RPGs - whoever's reading this, definitely check it out. Couple of random fun facts btw: Kohei Tanaka did the music for it, at a time when he was only known for a small handful of anime (including the Dragon Ball anime's opening and ending themes.) He's now better known as one of the two composers for the One Piece anime adaptation! Brain Lord's composer, Masanao Akahori, also did the music for Nosferatu. The chime melody for the song, 'Site of Civilisation' in Brain Lord makes an appearance in the choir of the Nosferatu song, 'March 8, 1990'. Kinda neat. lol
You and me both! It really is an incredible game that needs more love these days, It’s probably one of the ps1 RPGs I’ve replayed the most over the years
and while its PSP remake 2nd evolution got a PS3/PS4/Vita port those 3 versions NEVER left Japan as of 2016 for the PS3 PS4 Vita version. But I don't own PS1 anymore and the PS1 version of 2nd story was very glitchy.
Terranigma, truly one of my most precious childhood experiences. A game which still stays with me to this day; I think about it every few months. I'm extremely bummed that people in the US didn't get to experience it back in the day! Maybe if that had been the case, SE would have returned to the trilogy by now in some form, be it as simple ports, remasters or even remakes. It's a real treasure and I wish SE would acknowledge it in some way. Then again, we didn't get FFT and Parasite Eve 1 over here in EU. Oddly enough, PE2 was released (which I loved). Suikoden 3 also was never released over here, until the PS2 classic version made it to the PS3 store at least. That was a real bummer back then, because Suikoden 1 and 2 had a similar impact on me as Terranigma did.
We didn’t get sooo many games, don’t even get me starting! But yes, having Terranigma as a child was at least a tiny bit of compensation. But I still prefer Illusion of Time over it.
PLEASE make that Star Ocean 2 video. Not only my all time favorite game (which I usually do a yearly play through and still discover new things every time) but the most underrated and ignored game of the 90s. It's easy to get into and breeze through if you want, but if you're like me and want to discover everything it has to offer, this game can go DEEP. Unreal soundtrack too. Loving these videos, brother.
The first one needs more attention paid too. Like all of that time, like Tales of Phantasia, used the same game code, which made them all feel related in some meta way. They also were impressive visually and had great music all around!
The production value on these videos are way too high for you guys to not seriously take off. Also, I appreciate the hell out of these videos so thank you. Love the content even though I’ve maybe completed 2 JRPG’s in my life. One being Blue Dragon, and the other Chrono Trigger.
Really appreciate the kind words! We’re hoping the same 🤞Sounds like you’re a fan of Toriyama and his art. You’ve already played one of the best with Chrono Trigger but there’s so many other wonderful titles out there if you ever decide to dive deeper into the genre
Really solid work guys, loving these mini-documentaries! I've only really played the all-time greats from the 90s since it was a bit before my time in terms of gaming (I was born in 94), so some of these games were completely unknown to me. Also, really looking forward to that Dragon Quest Retrospective whenever you get around to that!
Thank you! Glad to hear you enjoyed it and learned about some new titles. It’s crazy the amount of quality that was coming out in 90s, it was truly a time for gaming innovation.
Star ocean 2 is goated. I remember playing it as a teen for ps1 and being immersed. And years later when it got remade for steam and I saw the visuals I legit cried. It's so good to see series like this revived for the modern day.
I am surprised to have never ran into your channel before. I'm subscribed now. Excellent video and I look forward to future content as well as going back and playing catch up
I loved everything in this video, from presentation, editing, pacing, clear narration and just fun infromative full hour of both nostalgia and discovery! You just earned a new sub and hope you achieve success with more videos like this.
Wow, amazing work on this video guys! The wait was well worth it and I learned so much about Enix's history from the video. I was aware of some of the more well know RPGs from Enix but had no idea how obscure some of the Japan only releases were (both great looking and nightmare fuel lol). My knowledge about RPGs from the 90's is not good, but thanks to your videos I have built a list of games that I want to play eventually since I missed out on so many from back then. Thanks again for the hard work and look forward to the next one (the DQ tease has me excited!).
Thank you Kenko, glad to hear you enjoyed it and got some knowledge out of it! Yeah the amount of Japan only releases we never got over here is pretty staggering, there were quite a few titles I discovered for the first time myself when researching for this video. As always we appreciate your support 😌
This was a nice trip down memory lane. I played all of the RPGs that were released in the West that are in this video. A lot of the Japan only games mentioned here I had never heard of so not only did I get to reminisce on good times, I also learned new things. Thanks Gaming Broductions.
Very cool video. Well written, thought out and I love all of the effects, editing and narration. Though I never owned them as a kid, Enix games were the first RPGs I ever played so they have a special place in my heart, looking back. ActRaiser is still an all-time favorite.
So stoked for this. Made a cup of tea, and now settling into this sure to be great stroll down memory lane. Loved this ERA of JRPGs, and it's nice to see Enix getting some love.
Ah really love to hear that, makes us feel great that others are actually excited to watch our content and only motivates us to keep putting some out. Hope you enjoyed this one!
Thank you! Some critique we’ve received in the past is to break up the narration more with some other sounds and segments so we’ve been trying to do just that
I was hoping it would be Enix. My soul needs an Illusion of Gaia full remake and I’d darn well appreciate a long long overdue official N American Terranigma release. Hell, throw in a current Soul Blazer release too ffs. If we all do our parts and buy and play Actraiser Renaissance then just maybe we’ll get what we want.
A full on Quintet resurgence these days would be amazing. There’s so many new RPG fans in recent years that probably haven’t even heard of their titles let alone played them. For the most part they all hold up really well too.
It would be nice just for those games to be available at all. They are probably my favorite snes games. I would like them to remake it like natsume handled wild guns & ninja warriors
I hope Actraiser sells well enough to prompt at least a port of the trilogy. I have so much nostalgia for Soul Blazer and Illusion of Gaia and would love to finally play Terranigma.
I loved Actraiser and Illusion of Gaia. Two staples of my childhood. Telekinesis is to this day my favorite super power. I downloaded Actraiser Renaissance as soon as I saw the Direct. It was an amazing remake and I hope so hard for an Illusion of Gaia remake.
Very cool video, got to say when I think Enix I think Dragon Quest, didn't realize they worked with Quintet or that they were only a publisher, very informative
Thanks! Yep a lot of people probably thought similarly, it’s hard not to associate them with Dragon Quest only but they really were doing a lot of other great things back in the day
Star Ocean the Second Story is my all-time favorite game. I'm happy that it's getting a remastered. I knew that Enix did more in Japan, but man, I wish I could play those games.
Definitely will at some point with a Square Enix in the 2000s video, as well as some other companies we’ll probably cover in the 90s. Thanks for subbing!
If I had to pick one game to play from this video that I've never played before, I would pick Ogre Battle. Really like the battle sprites, and the idea of jumping up a macro-level from managing just one party of characters to managing several parties is not often done. That management of several squads was something I liked about Grand Kingdom on PS4.
It is sad to see them going the route they are now, but we can still hold on to the games a lot of us grew up with and that helped a lot of us through hard times.
_Never been an Enix Fan......_ *GET OUT!!!!* Lol jk my dude jk. I grew up with them and love a lot of their games. I get that some people don't feel the same, nothing wrong with that. Cheers my dude.
Terranigma would be an awesome candidate for a remake. There’s still so many gamers in America that have yet to play it so it could be a great way to introduce it to a new audience
Star Ocean 2 is pretty much the game that defined my childhood alongside Diablo 2. Its the first games i really got hooked too to a nearly obsessive level. Its such an underrated gem. Ashton is still one of my favorite character design to this day, i even won an art contest in middle school drawing him. Rena is also a fun protagonist. The OST still gives me shivers as well. I also absolutely love Valkyrie Profile even though that came later when i was a bit older and played the PSP port. These 3 games are my top 3 favorites of all time with FF7 and Xenogears making the top 5.
I typically went for Opera in Claude's Story and took Ashton in Rena's. Ashton is better storyline for sure. Gameplay-wise I enjoyed using the ranged attacks of Opera to deal damage from a distance and heal with her hidden talent.
Incredibly underated channel as many have said before me. The quality of video production increases with every piece, though I wish more care was taken with the writing. Clearly tons of great thoughts are being expressed, though often the presentation of those ideas are frequently done in a similar fashion. Overuse of the term "this one" when referring to a game first comes to mind. If you're ever in the need of free proof reading and editing I'd love to help out. I come with a heavy backgound in scientific report writing and would love to assit with the organization and delivery of the ideas you guys have.
Valkyrie Profile 1 is the best game ever. It's a goddamn masterpiece. The story, character stories, main character Lenneth Valkyrie, villain Lezard Valeth, Arngrim the badass, Odins lapdog; Freya, the music by Sakuraba-san, the 2D graphics and sprite animations, the English voices, "to my side, my noble einherjar", the great magics, the juggling battle system, the sound effects...its the perfect jrpg. Its gotten quite expensive for the PS1 original, but its worth every penny.
Would love to see a video about the first decade of Square Enix (from the DAY they merged, April 1st 2003 - April 1st 2013). Love your content! Thanks for the incredibly detailed videos!
Square and Enix were both brilliant in the 90's. When I heard they were merging in the 00's, I was thrilled, thinking, "man, look what they did w/ Chrono Trigger. That's gonna be every game now!" Boy was I wrong, so wrong. I occasionally wonder what these two would look like today had they not merged. This was a fun trip down memory lane. Love Robotrek!
42:05 Is...is that a floating cyborg head with a neck collar-propeller made of rotating spikes? I don't think I've ever seen something that made me want to play a game more. Just glorious. :)
I was not expecting this to be complete and chronological. The order is turning out to be interesting. Plus, I love anything that mentions Robotrek. Hearing the music takes me back! The commercials on an old CRT Is also a nice touch, a bit of nostalgic flair presented in a way I don't recall anyone explicitly do before. How "unique". :p lol
Awesome video. Thanks for all the effort you put into this. I wish some of these older Enix games would see modern ports. I loved the 2/3 of the Quintet trilogy I played, as well as The 7th Saga. So many in this video that would be awesome to play.
I worked at a Video Update (movie rental place) before they went out of business. There was a time they took all the snes off the shelf and intended to bargain bin them. being an employee i had first dibs. I got quite a few with the boxes, but not a lot of manuals.
You wanted awesome finds stories? I've got one. Around 2010, I was gifted a game collection from an older gentleman. Like 30 boxed SNES games. Stuff like Brain Lord, Brandish, Dungeon Master, Eye of the Beholder, Capcom beat em ups, and so much more. I made out like a bandit that day!
They were really lost at sea with their SNES era localizations. Actraiser and the Soul Blazer Trilogy were awesome, as was Ogre Battle, but their other localization choices were pretty questionable when juxtaposed with their decision to leave DQ5 and 6 in Japan.
Yeah it is very interesting they chose to localize more obscure titles like Paladin’s Quest/Lennus and The 7th Saga while skipping out on entries from their flagship series, especially given how critically acclaimed DQ5 was
Wait. I'm clicking on your hour long video and within a minute you had me laughing (the blowing in the cartridge) and melting (Terranigma's Evergreen). Guess I'm gonna like your content.
Ogre Battle angered me greatly for considering me Evil for training my soldiers to be the best to the point that the evil armies couldn't even hurt them. I would never send soldier into a battle they couldn't win if I could help it D: I believed that each of them had families to go home to.

So many bizarre games, but also so many good games from Enix. It's startling just how many games they helped release.
And all BEFORE they pulled the biggest-dick-in-the-universe-est move ever and merged with their main competitor and only company that rivaled them
Terranigma is still one of my favourite games.

This was an awesome watch, thank you for a great video, guys! It was worth every minute!
Gameplay-wise I enjoyed using the ranged attacks of Opera to deal damage from a distance and heal with her hidden talent.
maaaan the nostalgia from this video. Im old.
Your videos are absolutely brilliant. You found a wonderful topic and your execution is superb
Mahoujin GuruGuru is a beloved franchise in japan who just recently had a full anime 24-episode anime adaptation in 2017 by studio IG.
Thanks for all your effort in making this. I really enjoyed it.
Loved it 🙌🏻 what a trip though the great nostalgia filled 1990
Glad to hear you enjoyed it, thanks for watching!
Your work is timeless. Thanks for the entertainment!
That intro with you blowing the cartridge brings nostalgia. Man those were the days 😂
It started on the NES for us growing up
E.V.O. was a pretty cool game, would love to see a spiritual successor released today.
I think you convinced me to finally start Star Ocean 2. Way to be. Great video.
I adore your content guys this vid is so great, thanks for your awesome work on this huge video, its rly helped me get through work.
Thank you for the kind words, appreciate you watching and glad to hear it helped you get through the work day!
Great video, I knew about many of these but now I know about some more hidden gems and fan translations to check out.
Oh man you got me with the Soul Blazer intro already!
my 3 favorite gaming companies as a kid was enix, working design and square.
42:05 Is...is that a floating cyborg head with a neck collar-propeller made of rotating spikes? I don't think I've ever seen something that made me want to play a game more. Just glorious. :)
An hour long Gaming Broductions video. My birthday came months early this year.
We hope you enjoyed it, quite a stroll down memory lane for us putting this project together!
90s enix was so damn good
glad the algorithm gave me this channel. i have a few friends who are gonna like this too
Very educational. some of these games look really great
Shoutout to the algorithm 🙏🏼 Thanks for watching the video!
:p lol
❤ Star Ocean: The Second Story (still playing to this day!)
❤ Grandia II!
Nice to see Soul Blazer get some love.
One of my top-three favourite SNES games.
i remember those toys r us paper tickets for video games
This was fantastic. I discovered so many old games that I need to check out.
Very thorough work indeed! Fantastic gem of content goodness! Thank you! Subbed!
Thanks for watching! More in the works 👍🏼
Awesome video. Thanks for all the effort you put into this. I wish some of these older Enix games would see modern ports. I loved the 2/3 of the Quintet trilogy I played, as well as The 7th Saga. So many in this video that would be awesome to play.
High class video. May the algorithm be with you.
Thank you! That’s what we’re hoping for 🤞
Soul Blazer is still one of my favorites and I would love to see more games like it (and Dark Cloud 1 and 2 of course).
I just discovered your channel and watched this whole video. Glad I did :) Subscribed. Congratulations for the great work!
I worked at a Video Update (movie rental place) before they went out of business. There was a time they took all the snes off the shelf and intended to bargain bin them. being an employee i had first dibs. I got quite a few with the boxes, but not a lot of manuals.
Valkyrie profile got re release on the Psp as Valkyrie profile Lineth. I got a copy and it is awesome. Power attacks and soundtrack
32:25 this is kinda fun. There is a technique which launches a note that bounces around the area.
"Just Breed"...what a game title lol
Great video! I found your channel a few months ago from your history of Square video.
Thanks for watching both of those videos! More to come in the future 👍🏼
Love these intros. Top shelf quality here!!!
Thank you!! 👍
