I think it's hard for new lifters to do shrugs, if you don't already have the muscle and the ability to flex them you don't know how using the muscle should feel.

I personally can't do it and feel it if the weight is too heavy. I always ends up of raising my shoulders instead of actually flexing my back muscles. I'm a newbie so I always end up doing less intensity and more reps instead.

@@InevitableTruth. If i were you, I would take a lighter weight and focus on making your reps as slow as you can (3 seconds up, 2 second pause, 3 seconds down) as this made me connect with my traps when I was a beginner

Lo que recomiendo para aprender a entrenar los shrugs es agarrar una banda elástica y hacer un ejercicio de trapecios. Es la mejor forma de aprender a "activar" ese músculo

Very true many of these pages don’t address the fact many of these are not for beginners because you don’t know how to use your muscles. I had to work up to it by doing calisthenics stuff at home then eventually doing these types of exercises in the gym

Pulling them close to your ears doesn't do anything for full range of motion because all you are doing is just pulling your head down, the best way is to not thrust and go in a semi fast pace up and down to maximize muscle engagement

Overloading is best for traps, the stretch is just as important as the contraction. I use three types of shrugs, heavy 60-70% 10 sets of 10. Power shrugs with 90-100 % to failure for 5 sets and light weights about 30% 100 rep shrugs concentrating on range of motion. Mix in farmer carries and trap bar deadlifts.

I train it once a week as a whole workout, it’s quite a muscle taxing workout, i found it being sweet spot for recovery and growth. Or you can split it in your workout routines and I did this Monday and Fridays.

I do one set of shrugs, around 15 reps to failure at a slow tempo once a week and I progress nicely. Maybe all that volume would work for me, it just seems needless, but everyone is different of course

You’re under utilising the dumbels. If you want o just go straight up and down like you are, you might as well use a barbell. Dumbels allow you to pull up and back in one movement and squeeze. As per Mr Dorian Yates style…

Meh, it might be beneficial to add phases like that, but you are definitely gonna benefit from cheat reps, partial rom and even simple holds like deadlifting. For traps isn’t so essential to always take care of perfect form and range of motion. I speak by experience.

Go slower and don't stop until you can't do any more reps. The final reps will recruit more fibres.. Slower exercise done in this way is harder which should be your goal when exercising. Unfortunately this will mean you can't lift as much, as you're now building strength rather than pretending to demonstrate it.
