So many artists turned this song down. Elvis was the only brave enough to do it! Racial tensions were high & no one wanted to rock the boat! But Elvis was used to getting death threats....& he really felt the song! When you grow up in a ghetto ....this song hits hard...& Elvis grew up in the ghetto.

Elvis was born in 1935 in the middle of the Great Depression, at home in a 2 room house his dad built, his twin brother was born 30 minutes before him and was still born. In the 1940s they moved to Tennessee and lived in a boarding house for almost a year before they got a place in government funded housing (the projects) and depended on government food programs. The song was written by Mac Davis who was born in 1920. When he was about 5-6 his best friend lived in the "bad" part of town and Davis wrote this in remembrance of his friend.

From a shy young boy to global superstar, the icon of the 20th century that was Elvis Presley is still as enigmatic today as when he was alive. the most celebrated and influential popular musician of all time, his gift and talent, humanitarianism are as enchanting now as they were when he first snarled his lips.

For part of Elvis's childhood he lived in a neighborhood in Tupelo Miss. that was populated mostly by African-American families. Presley's family was poorer than most of the neighbors. His closest childhood friend was Sam Bell whose story you can find on UA-cam. Sam's family took a liking to the young Elvis and helped feed him. That is why Presley during the making of a movie, later on, told a co-worker if it wasn't for black people he would've starved. He never forgot. The plight of black youth was of special concern to him. That's why Presley chose this song even though he normally didn't like to be political. The year before he starred in his own tv special. The producers wanted a finale. They talked with Elvis about his thoughts of that turbulent time including the assassination of MLK. Elvis was distraught about that incident. He was an admirer of King's and it had happened in his hometown. The songwriter took what Presley gave them and wrote the finale, If I Can Dream. Elvis sings it with a vehement passion(in the white suit version) gesturing and reaching out with his hand as if he could grab reality and make it change. It's a tour de force performance which, of course, his management had tried to dissuade him.

This man grew up impoverished. He lived on "the wrong side of the tracks". He lived with no indoor plumbing, his family started out as share croppers. His entire rise to fame was born out of his drive to take his mother out of poverty and save her from back breaking labor just to put food on the table. He observed at a very young age that his father was not going to be the one to do it so he took it upon himself. He never forgot what it was like and its part of the reason he died with very little money, he gave most away to those he saw in need. He remained generous and most of all humble because he saw himself better than no one else. He felt and stated " he got lucky and was blessed" with his life. This was more than a singer. This was an exceptional human being in many ways. Vicki

Jackie Wilson (famous black singer had a heart attack during his own concert). Elvis paid all his medical bills etc but unfortunately he died at a young age. He even told the Houston Astrodome who had told him he had to leave his black girls back home. These were his back up singers including Whitney Houston’s mom. He told them they don’t come, I don’t come. Then to twist the knife he paraded them all in a convertible with a white girl driving in the car with him Around & around the stadium. He was so generous to a fault that he was almost broke when he died so young. He felt his voice was God given & could be taken back away by God at any point. He had so much faith that he won 3 Grammys for his Gospel Music which if you listen to will bring you to tears. Thanks so much for playing this. God bless. 🙏🏼🕺🏻🕺🏻🎸

Great reaction Evis was the best friend i ever had in my entire life. we met when i was 17 yrs old. I won a radio show contest and the prize was a day with Elvis but our friendship lasted past that one day in time. All the memories of my friend are tucked safe in my heart forever. i saw him a few weeks before he passed we had a short conversation which i will never share again because people are so nasty and comment hurtful heart breaking things they do not know me but they still can't keep their mouths closed about things they know nothing about. I walk past Graceland everyday. Great reaction loved it. love from Memphis Tn.

Great reaction guys 👍🏻🥰‼️ Ya all aught to react to “Kentucky Rain” by Elvis. Like “In the Ghetto”, it’s a good one. By the way, Country singer/song writer Mac Davis wrote “In the Ghetto”. He wrote a lot of great songs for several famous artists. He sings a song himself that I like called “It’s Hard to Be Humble”, which is really funny 🤣😂.

Elvis said he wanted to sing more socially aware songs and he would never sing a song or act in another movie he didn’t believe in.
Mac Davies had written the song with his black childhood friend in mind, his father's workfriend's kid, who lived in the poor part of town, and he didn’t understand, as a child, why it had to be like that. Mac Davies said this was when the word ghetto was beginning to be a thing and a word that described that. He showed it to Elvis and Elvis said Yes! This is my song!
Elvis also was told, when he was going to some cities, "leave the colored girls behind"(Whitney Houston’s mom and her band). He said, "well, then I’m not comming". They had to change their minds of course.
As a kid he went to black churches to hear and sing the gospel.
You should watch and react to his tribute to MLK, If I can Dream. Or the mini documentary Elvis and the black community

Spot on Mac even as a child was confused as to why his friends dad made less money then his dad did working the same job. Sadly some just still dont get it today. I'm just saddened by that because I got it as a small child hearing this song in the 70's.

Elvis wasn’t from Chicago, but he did grow up in public housing in Memphis. His father spent time in and out of jail, and they were dirt poor. He could very easily have turned out to be that “angry young man”. Elvis never forgot his upbringing and as a result he was an extremely generous person.

How infuriating that a lot of the black community thought Elvis was appropriating and making a buck off of them. He was raised in a black ghetto and part of the black church choir. He refused to stay at segregated hotels and if his backup singers were not welcomed he didn't do the show. He demanded they be treated like queens! Muhammed Ali, Sammy Davis Jr., and Chuck Berry were some his best friends. Those performers saw Elvis as the bridge between the black and white music scenes and credit him with opening the door for them to succeed in mainstream America. He is one of the original Allies.

If I can Dream live performance video. It’s a 1968 Tribute to Dr. King performance against the advice of his manager. Elvis was down when other stars were afraid to speak up. His back up singers were black and included Whitney Houston’s mother. He was asked to leave his black girls at home. Elvis not only told them if they weren’t welcome he wasn’t coming. He had the girls driven around the field of the stadium in a convertible with him by a blonde. Elvis sang rock, blues, gospel all of it!

Dear God. Elvis grew up in a "shot gun" shack (google it) in Tupelo, Mississippi. He only owned one pair of shoes. His dad went to jail for stealing checks, just like that. But Elvis' only Grammy was in *gospel* so it's a shame no one covers it.
His dad, Vernon, actually fiilled out the forms to get into public assistance housing up north.

      Elvis loved the black community.
So much that in his 22 years he used African Americans for a total of 6 weeks.
      Now lets break that down
      22 years x 56 weeks = 1232 weeks
      1232 minus 6 weeks = 1226 weeks
So do you still think he did a lot?
I am yet to see a video of him singing with black artists.
He had the sweet inspirations in the back ground when he became fat.
But the focus was never on them.

Rethink Heartbreak Hotel as not being deep since it’s about suicide and Elvis made that his first hit song in 1956. Also, if you listen to the lyrics of Jailhouse Rock, it’s full of double meanings and homo erotic themes in 1957. He was subtle and smart in his message but he was more daring and rebellious than most people know especially those who make him to be a racist. The things that have been done to that man’s reputation by other people is a damn shame.
