I think every KISS fan groaned when you said you were going for an Ace Frehley/Tommy Thayer vibe and then immediately played two Bruce Kulick era songs! The tone was pretty nice though. Particularly the Bass!
Yep! Those 2 songs are super strat/ESP with kinda scooped mids. Frehley/Thayer might have been better with a hughes and kettner for modern kiss but still playing the classics. Frehley is just glassy marshall with low gain. Nothing crazy special. Love these videos but mehh....there was really nothing to 'replicate' here. LP and marshall...
@MrCrowley1018 *Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey
kulick was in the band longer and had more hits. thayer should have never taken his job. they should have just put makeup on the man.
Fektthis I’m not disputing that, but they said they were going for a Frehley/Thayer sound and then chose two songs from the Kulick era.
I actually thought the bass tone didn't have the growl Gene's sound has... but oh well!
I'm surprised Gene and Paul haven't been in touch trying to charge us all $10,000 for a VIP privilege pass to see this video
hahahah that's a brilliant comment
"Ladies and Gentlemen, this is Gene Simmons....of KISS! The 'Kruise' ship has hit an iceberg" (they're in the bahamas) "But, don't panic. We have 3 packages to get you off the ship. The Regular, Diamond, and Platinum packages." - Craig Gass
They did and it was $15000 and Gene will give you a kiss for $20000
No Rock n Roll All Night? No Detroit Rock City? Come on, my dudes!
they couldn't do Detroit Rock City without paul's guitar to harmonize the riff
and yeah they should've done I Wanna Rock And Roll All Night (And Party Every Day)
The tone on Strutter was probably always my favorite of Kiss. The gritty blues guitar sitting in the back of the mix with the good crunch that kind of sounds octaved during the chorus. mmmm
RRAN sucks balls. Worst song they ever did next to that disco shit.
I was made for loving you
Yeah, dropped the ball on what could have been a great sound like clip, it appeared like they really weren’t interested as past sounds like clips have always been good and well researched.
Would love a Sound Like Def Leppard
D. Scribe I’m not the biggest Def Leppard fan but this would be interesting
@ 9:11 WHY haven't you done Def Leppard? .... Given their reputation for spending a fortune in the studio, not to mention years of studio time, it would be interesting to hear what you can come up with ON a budget! :)
Saaaame, but please the late 80s era cause the early is just marshall and gibson
@@JoeBlack1108 yeah, but it would be fun to see them recreate that sound in another way
Id love to know how to sound like Steve Clark. Pretty sure hes just a Marshall stack and some chorus, but what do I know compared to these two? xD
Puts together Ace Frehley rig. Immediately plays songs Ace was never on. Huh?
OH, I didn't know that. Probably because kiss F*cking suck.
@@acbundy88 now days, 70s they were one of the coolest
@@acbundy88 Nah
@@acbundy88 good for you
They at least did Love Gun
Gene Simmons will sue you for this.
well Gene can get well and good stuffed .
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
He has already trademarked the word Sue so you will be in court too
@@kasnitch Gene is actually a pretty nice guy...
The Echelon are you serious? Oh m8...
Picks an “Ace Frehley” guitar... proceeds to play Bruce Kulick. Brilliant.
Exactly. And then stated he needed a whammy bar that the les paul didnt have. Wrong guitar. Bruce used a lot of strats. And the whole Gene thing was a complete debacle. A P Bass would have been perfect. Most of Genes basses are P based. Although he was rocking some Pedullas during the crazy nights era.
@@earthtonesbass True mate. Of course Gene barely played on any recordings from the mid 80's into the mid 90's in the studio. Bruce Kulicks older brother, Bob, played most of the bass lines through that period.
Lmao yeah. This rig probably would've been better for God of Thunder, Detroit Rock City, ect.
Jean B. played in Gene's place too
and doesn't get shock me right
“We haven’t done Def Leppard yet”
I can safely say I think we know what the next sounds like will be
HayabusaSniper1 God I hope so
I can’t wait!
next sound like was Jack White BY busting, it was alright but not def leppard's Steve Clark and Phil Collen
sounds like Kiss ... after years of being absent in my listening rotation , you've inspired me to return to the Kiss catalogue to rekindle the tones and stylings of yesteryear ... Thanks and have an awesome day!
“The fizz is gone and we’re a bit fatter” - Everyone after Xmas
With kiss being probably the most documented band of all time it's difficult to understand how you could get this so wrong
Correct!
I overall enjoy this show but over time I've come to find that these guys are rather oblivious to both small and large details that are very important.
I don't even like Kiss and could be more accurate than this
My guess is they're just trying to sell specific pieces of gear. Like a restaurants special. It's not actually a special made dish. Just the stuff that's about to expire lol
My buddy was Ace's tech & Ace only used 1 Dimarzio Super Distortion he also changed in later years as of 2019 when I seen him from using 4 hole plexies & was using JCM800s. Old KISS tone was very much different then when Vinny Bruce & later Tommy replaced him. Ace also used black backs. KISS really changed tone over the years & they didn't realize it until Ace & Peter rejoined & Gene & Paul argued that they didn't but then realized they did.
This is perhaps the quickest I have clicked on one of these episodes of Sounds Like. The Spaceman will always be the legend and hero of KISS for me, and he influenced me so much. Awesome!
Space Ace is one of my heroes too! Love his playing and personality
@@lknez13 I agree man!
What’s the point of trying to sound like KISS, emulate Ace Frehley specs, then start with two songs that had nothing to do with Ace Frehley?
Also KISS had also used Fender amps in addition to Marshall’s in the studio.
To be honest it doesn’t even have to be a Les Paul. He used a super distortion in the bridge- exclusively. 100-watt marshals, and occasionally an EHX Line booster.
Do this again, break the bank, and try to sound like the KISS Alive! Record. Which really is the standard for KISS tone.
If you really want to get detail oriented, you can add an octave pedal. Probably a mutron.
Anybody who wants to sound like KISS should rather watch some Johan Segeborn videos instead anyways ; )
I once heard a rumor that Ace's live sound in the Alive! era was a mic'd Fender Champ.
@@finishin.my.coffee8780
Haha, maybe he followed that old rule by... I think it was Clapton, who said that for a big sound you need a small amp.
@@DerEchteBold Maybe. I don't know if the rumor was true or not. Ace has said he used his Princeton on a lot of things but I can't remember him talking about a Champ. Anyway, Kiss or no Kiss, I like the Jubilee itself. I'd buy one if I could afford it.
Thank you so much this is a long awaited episode for me
Just as a heads up, two of the songs were from the Bruce Kullick era, he was the lead player for most of the 80s through 96.
Akira Takasaki from 80's era Loudness we all forget that he had a very unique sound,
I'd love to see Sounds like Rush without busting the bank.
ua-cam.com/video/IPc7f0gwgsU/v-deo.html
They have done it, but they did a proper shit job. Played all the riffs wrong and fucked every key part of Alex and Geddy’s tone up
You did awesome, as usual. So glad you used the Epi Black Beauty. I got that to.
who else remembers God Gave Rob A Korg Miku II from the Tommy Thayer Explorer review? i do!
God gave Rob a Korg Miku!
Gave Rob a Korg Miku!
Put it on his board for everyone!
i remember that!
Fantastic tones, pure, raw, meaty crunch.
They showed compassion and acceptance by playing Crazy Nights.............. because it's a little song for everybody out there.
it was the 2nd kiss song i ever listened to! my 1st being Strutter thanks to playing GTA San Andreas
We all groaned when you said “Ace Frehley/tommy thayer”. There’s only one
Yep. Tommy Thayer, since Ace isn't part of Kiss anymore and hasn't been for a while.
@@jpcrafton69 Ace created the sound that Tommy has been employed to replicate. Am I wrong?
I love Tommy's playing, but it's hard to deny that his "style "is pretty much playing like Ace. Even on the two albums Tommy played on sound like an Ace knockoff.
Cant blame him though. Who would say no to that gig?
You tards seem to forget tommy Thayer was ace’s tech for years before he left. Of course they sound similar, tommy knew the inside and out the of the tone. Tommy is a good player but ace was the visionary (and most successful solo career out of that whole band)
BeowulfDude tommy thayer sucks. Being a cheap imitation of an original (like Ace) isn’t a good look.
This was really great and totally enjoyed it guys! Loved KISS as long as I can remember, caught my first KISS concert in Mobile Alabama 1979. Never played much of their music because I just couldn’t get the sound right back in the 70’s. You two did a really nice job with this one, this was fun. Thanks so much! Buddy
ive been requesting this one for years! glad you finally did it
Man I really want to hear a my bloody valentines rig or any shoegaze tbh
Xenon jazzmaster, reverb, chorus, delay, fuzz, and literally any amp
Nailed the tone . Awesome job. Thanks
It would be great to have a sound like of Mick Ronson with in the Ziggy Stardust era
les paul custom
marshall origin
a tone bender style fuzz
and a wah
And more talent than you'll ever produce.
That’d be awesome, his stuff with Bowie was just incredible
KISS was the reason I started playing guitar!
KISS ARMY FOREVER
\m/>.
its nice finally seeing a guitar I own showcased :)
You've got to love KISS to get this right. You have to know the deep cuts, the Hebrew names, the brand of face paint (Mehron), and most importantly, what made them great. I love this channel, and everything you guys do, but you guys don't love KISS.
YES FINALLY!!!!! I’ve been waiting for u guys to do KISS
Yes!! Keep showing the bass some love in the sound like videos!
Classic KISS records, Ace used small Fender combo amps in the studio.
Seems that Matt couldn't find a bass shaped like a battle axe in store. He would have been better off going for something with an EMG P/J pickup set since that is what is on the Gene Simmons Punisher 2 bass.
Or a middle of the road Spector
Spot on guys!
Thanks for schooling me on achieving the tones
That is the sweetest bass sound I think I’ve ever heard.
I mean Gene Simmons is a putz, but he's a fantastic bass player and has always had great tones. I suggest listening to 100,000 years. Will change your life.
Sounds like Plini without busting the bank, this would be amazing
YESSSSS. Been waiting for this one for so long. One of my all time favorite rock bands. Tommy Thayer, Ace, Gene and Paul legendary guitarists. And Bea that Les Paul sounds incredible.
can we have sound like for
Robin Trower - without busting the bank
King Crimson's Adrian Belew and Robert Fripp - without busting the bank
Shinedown's Zach Myers and Eric Bass - without busting the bank
Slash (Solo Career) - without busting the bank
Peter Frampton - without busting the bank
Black Sabbath's Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler - BY busting the bank
B.B King - BY busting the bank
Black Country Communion's Joe Bonamassa - BY busting the bank
Jared James Nichols - without busting the bank
and definitely Def Leppard's Phil Collen and Steve Clark - without busting the bank
love the video!
BB played straight into an amp. Good vids of him describing his technique.
THANK YOU RABEA AND MATT for not disrespecting KISS like alot do these days, I was 6 when I saw them on The Mike Douglas Show and am still in the KISS ARMY, yes they are older but who can besides a few can say they toured all these years and went thru alot in their career? Everyone forgets that Gene is human like the rest of us but I guess its the price of fame. Hopefully you'll do a By Busting The Bank and do some Rock n Roll All Night, and other great classics as mentioned here.
Wow and Kiss was just playing on the radio yesterday!
9:11 petition for a Sound Like Def Leppard Without Busting The Budget
Omg 😱 that rich huge time of that jubilee combo blew my mind
Please can we have Sound like:
The Clash - Mick Jones and Paul Simonon
Manic Street Preachers - James Dean Bradfield
Wolf Alice
David Bowie guitarists i.e. Mick Ronson or Robert Fripp
The Clash & Ronson, very good shout...!
Maybe Fripp for King Crimson alongside Adrian Belew
The Clash should be Mick Jones and Joe Strummer, R.I.P Joe
still for David Bowie's guitarist it should defo be the late Mick Ronson
James Dean Bradfield for sure although they won't have a boss fz 2 hyper fuzz in 😉
Great sound!
I was thinking yesterday "I hope Anderton's do a 'sound like Kiss' one day" and boom, here it is! Wow! Not just amazing people + store + musicians, but also mind-readers, too :o [el'sda2].
WHY. HAVE. I. NOT. SEEN. THIS?!!! I was going to suggest it but just found it
YOU WANTED THE WORST YOU GOT THE WORST....ME ! 🎸👨🏽🎤
It needed Rock and Roll All Nite. Best KISS riff ever.
oy can we get an increase in budget for 2020 .. prices go up and money buys less .
Idk about that man. It seems like every year the cheap gear gets better and better every year
@@sethp8947 some does Seth .. but enough gear ?
@@sethp8947 Agreed. And with a Katana 50, you can do a very reasonable "sound like" just about anybody for $600. We've never had it so good.
Yeah, but wages have been stagnant for ages so budgets aren't generally much higher.
@@jamesxlennon valid and unfortunate point James . thanks .
The les paul without the equalizer sounds like some thin lizzy
Sound like The Stooges, Kyuss or Monster Magnet.
Some of the choices made in this show make me want to scream and yell.
"I needed a good kiss, but my girlfriend wasn't there, so..."
*cue Matt looking really worried*
Fun fact.....only the bridge pickup was wired in Ace's Les Paul's....the middle and neck pickups were just for show.
Ace is a guitar to amp guy. Only pedal he uses is a Line 6 delay or MRX Carbon Copy. I'm friends with his tech in the Midwest.
We need a System of a Down BY busting. You guys did nicely on the without.
in the by busting maybe matt can pick up a Thunderbird or Warwick bass for Shavo's part
Baroness!!! Baroness!!! Baroness!!!
Come on fellas, it's time. It’s been three+ years straight of me asking, come on
How about a sound like Iced Earth 🤘🏻
Awesome underrated band with some fast meaty riffs
About time for this one
the video nobody needed but watched out of sheer boredom
You Got It Guys 👍👍🎶🎶🎸
Nice! Would love to se how to sound like Judas Priest in the 80's.
Rabea would have to clone himself to mimic the twin guitar attack of classic Tipton and Downing. Green Manalishi!!
For Glenn:
EMG loaded guitar with a floyd rose
Marshall DSL40C
MXR Distortion +
MXR Micro Chorus
Boss GE7
and for K.K:
EMG loaded guitar with a floyd rose also
Marshall DSL
and that should be it
This may be the best sounding rig you’ve done. But next. KING GIZZARD
Sound like offspring pls!!! ❤️
Tom Thayer / Ace. Plays a Bruce Kulick lick.
‘749? Apart from the shape I’d buy that’ 😂😂😂
Still waiting for a "Sound Like Mick Ronson" video
Oh yeah! David bowie..but is easy:
- lp guitar
- marsh plexi amp
- cry baby
- vox tonebender
@@MrKarim989 I still want to hear Rabea play "Angel No 9"
@@ccjmusic in this case u must add some flanger hh deco..
And i hear from Ronson himself, he play guitar with wah always on, but you must find the spot , just at the beginning of the race
On Shock Me you don't slide the chord from F# to G, Ace Freighly bends the F# up to G and plays the open G chord. :-)
Can you please do an Ultimate Travel Rig without busting the bank...just amps and effects that dont take up much space and can fit in your luggage when travelling for work or holiday...not guitars as i bring my guitar in a case anyway.
You guys released this at the wrong time >.< I was meant to be seeing them this weekend and now the whole Australian leg of the tour has been cancelled for now D:
Can you do a sound like, but with the wrong gear? So trying to sound like slash with a strat and a fender amp, or trying to sound like BB King with telecaster, and it will show whether it's the gear that makes Tone, or the player
Pretty sure that was the most barre power chords Bea has played in one sitting in a very, very long time... :)
2:01 he knocks a guitar on another! Priceless
now bea's les paul with busting the bank would be epic for kiss it has those tones for sure.
Sound Like The Mars Volta without busting would be dope
Loved this, decent all round sounds. Sixx AM next?
Nice one! I would love you guys to do shinedown - especially zac myers. Love the single string stuff he plays and would love to see your approach on how to get the tone that massive
Need to do next:
-Lamb of God without busting the bank.
-Sepultura (Andreas Kisser) without busting the bank.
-Disturbed without busting the bank.
-Breaking Benjamin without busting the bank.
-Killswitch Engage without busting the bank.
-Clutch without busting the bank.
-Agnostic Front without busting the bank.
-Hatebreed without busting the bank.
-Ramones without busting the bank.
-NOFX without busting the bank.
Ramones & Nofx defo shout...!
For Dan Donegan's tone you need
A Seymour Duncan loaded guitar (preferably double humbuckers)
maybe a Marshall DSL40C cos he used Randall which andertons do not have
Way Huge angry Troll
Boss MT-2 Metal Zone
Boss OC-3 Super Octave
Digitech Whammy V
and a Dunlop Cry Baby Wah
You should do a Sounds like Gang Of Four! Andy Gill is such a unique guitarist with an inventive style and interesting tone
Interesting thing is Ace rarely used anything but the bridge pickup. The rest was for looks
Loved the video and loved that you finally did kiss but a couple of riffs killed me how rabea played them, particularly shock me😰
Nearly had a heart attack when I was hearing Tommy Thayer's name. Glad you ended up doing Ace.
Follow this up with a ‘look like kiss’ video. I’d like to see the Anderton’s staff in all the high heel boots and makeup.
So there is a rule about not using signature guitars but cover songs are okay? God Gave Rock and Roll to you is not a Kiss original. It's by Argent.
Don't even have to watch. I know these 2. I love KISS. Instant thumbs up.
A sound like Ghost would be epic 🤙🏻
As a kiss fan, thank you, that was fun to watch. :)
Great job guys, please do 80’s PRINCE
“closest I can find”(glanced over a black lp custom with white plastics)
Great amp sound - Guys! Excellent!
Sound like Bush - Sixteen Stone era please
This really shows the importance of getting a great amp as the basis of everything.
Ace had his own signature LP
it's discontinued tho
Ace says all you need is a Les Paul and a Marshall with everything set at 12 o'clock.
Respect for that beard matt!
You know you’re running out of ideas when you’re trying to sound like KISS.
Sound Like Neil Young now you've got Black Beauty!
Interested in the legacy Mockingbird hardtail in trans red, reminds me of Slash! Speaking on Slash, do you think Gibson will release a signature model of the Bolivian Les Paul like he has been using on tour?
