    How To Bead A Necklace
    by Jennifer and Kitty O'Neil
    Running With Sisters
    Do you ever see the strands of beautiful beads at the craft store and wish you knew what to do with them? Maybe you have even bought some, but you don’t know how to turn them into jewelry. Well, we are here to take the mystery out of jewelry making.
    We are going to show you how to turn those gorgeous gemstone and crystal beads into a necklace. And you can use the same technique to make a bracelet, too! We'll show you how to combine two to three strands of beads to make your design.
    We'll show you what to put the beads on - bead stringing wire! It is a very soft, coated wire that doesn’t kink like regular wire. Here’s a video we made explaining bead stringing wire:
    Bead Stringing Wire For Jewelry Explained ► • How To Make Jewelry: B...
    We'll show you how to string the beads onto the bead stringing wire, including a little tip using masking tape to keep the beads from sliding off. Then we will show you how to add a clamshell bead tip and a crimp to secure a toggle clasp.
    The tools you will need for this project are the basic trip of jewelry making: chain nose pliers, round nose pliers, and wire cutters. Here’s a video we made showing these tools:

    We hope you like this video and it helps you get started making your own jewelry. If you have any questions at all, just leave us a comment and we’ll reply. We are here to help!

    Great video ladies! If I may...just one more little suggestion...)at least for the beginners anyway,) after your last crimp and before closing the crimp cover, be sure to give your necklace a good "tug". This is to ensure that your crimp is ok and that it will hold your beautiful necklace together....

    • @TheONeilSisters
      @TheONeilSisters  8 років тому +3

      +Teri Steinborn Great tip Teri! We should all make a habit of checking our crimps to make sure they're secure. Thanks so much for the excellent reminder!

    • @TheONeilSisters
      @TheONeilSisters  8 місяців тому

      Hi Leigh! The crimps for the clasps could cut into the delicate silk thread. So for thread we recommend tying it onto the clasp or making an endless necklace like this one: runningwithsisters.com/how-to-make-an-endless-beaded-necklace-no-clasp/
      Hope that helps!

      Sorry we missed your comments. Sometimes UA-cam is confusing in how it shows which comments we have not responded to. So sorry!
      If the beads are getting loose, it sounds like the bead stringing wire is coming out of the crimp. Try adding a dab of glue inside the clamshell bead tip before you close it. We like GS-GHypo. Here's what it looks like: amzn.to/3e9kamh Or you could use E6000 and apply it with a toothpick.
      Here is the step by step how-to for this necklace on our blog: runningwithsisters.com/how-to-make-a-beaded-necklace/
      We have a few more videos showing how to finish the ends. This one is made the same way.
      runningwithsisters.com/easy-bead-stringing-handmade-glass-bead-necklace/
      Or you could try finishing the ends a different way. Here we use crimp beads and crimp covers instead of the clamshell bead tip.

      Hi Sophie, We haven't tried making a stretch necklace, but it's worth a try! Here's a link to a stretch bracelet on our blog: runningwithsisters.com/gemstone-stretch-bracelet-video-and-kit/
      You can also try using a magnet clasp. Or you could make an Endless Necklace with no clasp: runningwithsisters.com/how-to-make-an-endless-beaded-necklace-no-clasp/
      Just make sure it's long enough to go over her head.
      What a nice gift for her!

    The video was very informative and precise; nonetheless, the clam shell bead caps are not secure. The jumpring will detach from them unless soldering is done. A pretty necklace fail is what you will get.

    • @TheONeilSisters
      @TheONeilSisters  4 роки тому

      Yes Deena! Soldering is a great technique for securing handmade jewelry. We are just showing a different way that a beginner can do. And so far, we haven't had any trouble with the bead tips opening up or coming loose. But if you prefer to solder, you can certainly adjust this how-to to include soldering.
      Great point!

I can actually find similar stones at a reasonable price (This thing went with soooo many outfits...!) but from repairing jewelry before I was afraid I couldn't make a tight or secure enough strand. Now I'm very excited to replace a much missed accessory without shopping for YEARS to find one already made.

    What about using fish line,is tht a good method of making long lasting necklaces as well?

    • @TheONeilSisters
      @TheONeilSisters  3 роки тому

      Great question Krystal. It is not recommended to use crimp beads on fishing line. The crimp bead is metal and the edge can cut the fishing line and break the necklace. Bead stringing wire is perfect for this project. Here's a video we have explaining what bead stringing wire is: ua-cam.com/video/IYdgc3_oDa4/v-deo.html

    Thank you for this tutorial. Can anyone tell me what size jump rings, crimp beads, and clamshell tip beads I will need when using the exact same wire as the one shown in the video? I'm new here and am finding a variety of sizes for those items. Thank you!

    • @TheONeilSisters
      @TheONeilSisters  6 років тому +2

      We like jump rings 3 or 4mm, so they are not too horsey. We choose small crimp beads. Beadalon makes a variety pack that mihgt be good get to get started. Google "Beadalon Crimp Tube Variety" to see them. We don't often see options for sizes on clamshell bead tips. Just make sure your crimp beads are smaller than the clamshell. Hope that helps! J&K

      We didn't note the sizes of the beads because you can really use any beads. But looking at the necklace, we'd guess the large rondelles are 10mmx12mm, the mediums might be 4mmx8mm, and the smalls could be 4mmx5mm. But as we said, we're not positive. Hope that helps! J&K

    • @TheONeilSisters
      @TheONeilSisters  2 роки тому

      Hi Kathy, We probably should pay more attention to crimp bead sizes, but we usually use whatever we have around. It is important if you are trying to hide a crimped crimp bead under a crimp bead cover, but otherwise it doesn't matter too much. You can buy a set of crimp beads in four sizes and then have a variety on hand as you need them. They look like this: amzn.to/39Ge2Vd

      You can add a dab of jewelry glue to the crimp bead inside the clamshell bead tip to make it more secure too. Are the crimp beads sliding through the hole in the clamshell bead tip? Maybe you need to try a bigger size. And be sure to really crimp the bead flat and tight onto the wire. Let us know how we can help!
