How the Spine Works in the Golf Swing

- In this video, Riley breaks down the three main components to spine motion (lateral bend, flexion & extension, and rotation) and how to move the spine in a healthy and powerful manner. Obviously, spine health and health of movement is a hotly debated topic in our game. This video takes a look at this particular area and we define our ideas on healthy and effective movement. I've watched ALOT of instructional golf content over the years, and can confidently say you explain the swing and body moves better than anyone. Thank you for these videos man.
@@ryanm4964 wow! Appreciate that so much! Thank you thank you! 🙏❤️
Totally agree. Best explanations!!!!!! That’s why I joined. Now it’s time to get coaching and do perfect practice.
I honestly can't believe you post this information for free. Best instruction I've come across in a solid decade of UA-cam instruction.
You’re the bomb! Much appreciated and so happy you’re enjoying the concepts! Keep us posted!
Another banger! The way you describe what's supposed to happen is so well thought out and presented. I've watched so much UA-cam instruction and received in person instruction, nothing compares.
I come from a medical background so I really appreciate your attention to detail when it comes to using the correct anatomical terms. I can tell that you have a deep understanding of human anatomy that most others simply lack. I also know how much work it takes to get to that level of understanding. So, thanks for putting those hours of studying in for us. Bravo.
@@jinwookim9623 thank you so much! I really appreciate it and glad the video resonated with you 🙏 please keep me posted on your game and hit me some thumpers!!
Thanks for the hyper detailed explanation on this. I feel so much more educated on proper spine movement. I guess I also never understood the proper pelvic drop/squat movement, as I was moving my knees too far forward. It feels a lot more athletic now. Keep it coming man. Thanks!
Riley: I’m 53, ex baseball player, amateur golfer, by following your methods over the past year (and ignoring everyone else) I’ve gone from an 8 to a 3, and become a much more consistent ball striker. What you do works, and I’m here to thank you for it, well done.
@@briandragoo2320 SOOOOOO excited for you and so humbled to have helped you in any regard. THIS is exactly why we make these videos. So excited that they have helped you!
Biomechanics, Biomechanics, and more Biomechanics!! I, for one, love it. Makes complete sense. Love your videos, and really, this should be taught to all golfers, especially beginners. The reason I say beginners is that they learn the map early and, in the long run, healthier and make the game more enjoyable. Riley where d
This is an absolutely brilliant video. After implementing just a little of the upper spine movement from your other videos, my swing felt freer and easier than it has for years. My 5 wood carry went from 185 to over 200. And I am 70. So thanks Riley. You and Elite golf have been a real education.
@@christancock5993 let’s goo!! So so excited for you! Keep up the great work!
Kelvin Miyahira and Dr. Serge Gracovetzky are proud of you teaching how to move the Spine correctly. Great video!🫡
@@FabianLozanoGolf both amazing mentors of mine for sure, without them even knowing it!!
Absolutely wonderful explanation of how the body should work in a HEALTHY golf swing. I am in my fifties and want to play some tournament golf this year so I’ve been working on my swing this winter. I’ve been hitting into a net and filming my swing and really noticed I have almost no lateral bend through the hitting area, hence why I was watching this video. I obviously am not doing this move healthy because after a long session of hitting balls I could barely get out of bed the next morning because my lower back was in so much pain. I am going to really work on this move you demonstrated to hopefully save my back. One question I do have is when should you start to straighten the left leg in the downswing? I have been straightening it fairly early to rotate my left hip back, that might be what’s causing my lower back pain. Thanks for putting this information out, much appreciated! Matt
@@foreal8691 Matt! Thanks for commenting! And great question! Definitely don’t want to actively straighten that lead knee. It will extend but because of the upper spiral line pulling you into finish. Keep us posted and definitely keep me posted on your health and pain levels as you work through these concepts 🙏
Incredible analysis. I still can't believe that pelvis drop is such an efficient move to make the hit horizontal action but also makes the bum to act as counter balance against the club momentum. L spine saviour map! thank you!
Yes! Protect that L spine! Fun playing with concepts!! ❤❤
Riley's dive into what is driven and what drives. Spiral elongation gathering more healthy tissue to work with. Super cool..
So fun to play with!
Love these in depth videos, appreciate the time and effort you put into them

perfect and easy to understand, thank you very much for your work and time (it must have been very time consuming to to figure everything out and prepare this very good presentation)
@@michaelwanger3973 thank you so much!!! ❤️❤️❤️
So informative. Can you add to the movements the timing of pressure shifts? I’m 85
Definitely will add to the pressure shifts! Definitely had questions on this topic!
Mucho Gracias Amigo.
De nada amigo!!! ❤️🙏
Fantastic vid on a really important subject!
@@Chris_Traynor thank you so much!
Another great video! Do you need to be very athletic/in shape to succeed with more hip rotation? What are your thoughts about a swing with less open hip rotation at impact like Moe Norman? He uses hip glide and knee flex to create a long and square low point bacon strip.
Everyone has a little different mobility level so that is a factor, however a small factor. Moe pattern has some very unhealthy elements to it even though it is super awesome and incredibly cool since it’s so unique!😊
The way Riley’s club exits on the through swing just looks so easy and correct and yet so hard to get……see what he says on my upcoming lesson and lessons going forward, these moves have been missing from me
So interesting because I’m actually not actively trying to exit the club left. Just a product of the energy escaping!
Great content in there!
@@johnsoutherland3254 thank you so much!! ❤️🙏❤️
Hey Riley, when you drop, do you drop straight back or angled towards the target? Thanks for your instruction, it's brilliant.
@@rossayres2326 you’re the bomb! Appreciate it!!! Very much a squat pattern. Want your drop to orient your trunk so it is roughly perpendicular to the ball or your chest faces the ball 👍
Riley, you need to give me 1 on 1 help. I'll come to you... I love the movements of all of your students - amazing. I have been an 8-10 HDCP for like 20 years. Ugh.
@@gregwolfe540 Greg! Let’s go! Would love to work with you my man! I’m in CO pretty much full time. We’ve got an indoor studio and a hotel on site so we are ready to rock with you when you are! And thank you for the kind words in regard to our students. Very fortunate to be able to do what we do!
@elitegolfschools that would be amazing. What is the best way to get details, iron out a plan, etc.?
big fan from Korea!! always thank you for your videos! I’m learning alot!
18:32 I just figured that at P5.5 position (position that you mention alot) is it ideal for the pelvis to be leveled?? (even with the ribsway)
or even throughout the whole swing??
maybe I’ve understood a little bit!!
Thanks so much for the kind words. Curious what you mean by leveled? Can you go a little deeper with that question?
You have a knack for creating a coherence in your tone and I applaud the consistency of your motion as it relates to your narrative. You exude a calm rational aura and I dig the chili! Consider yourself appreciated and admired especially in the contex of a circus-like environment per the internet. I am though waiting for someone more knowledgeable than me to better account for how the body interfaces with the ground. To me GOATA is ill considered elementally including using F BOMBS in their promotional efforts. I have no greater enemy than bad advice. Until some hero comes along with honeyed words of efficacy I'll reflect on the likes of FEDERER, BONDS, HOGAN, oh....and ASTAIRE! True ELITE motion is a natural selection which is a look of making the impossile look not only easy but that anybody could do it. GODDABLESS!
@@thomblinn4731 thank you so much and LOVE the athletes you mentioned! True goats in the game as well as movement!
Great !!
@@jean-philippebieth7254 thank you!!!!
I'd love to hear your philosophy on ground forces. Teachers are making a big deal of it these days. Hard concept to implement. Is it reactionary or an intent thing in your system?
@@johnsoutherland3254 it can be either AND! We are going to do a video with our pressure mat soon to go over this!

@@MMM.W1203 ❤️❤️❤️
I think your videos are excellent. I do wonder though why you advocate for such a neutral stance instead of a runners stance? Hogan, Snead, Wright had such great runners stances as they got older. Nicklaus's was more subtle but still made it easier to put his weight into the ball.
@@freowho9974 thank you so much! Appreciate the kind words! Also, what does runners stance mean in your mind??
@@elitegolfschools The back foot is square, the front foot is slightly open and the toe line may be slightly closed, but the upper body is not closed. It is primarily making it easier to get the belt buckle pointing in front of the ball at impact as a lot of people don't have the flexibility to go from a neutral stance to a good impact position.
Interesting point.

@@Sambogey 100!!!!!!!! Massive influence on us
What would be the cause if I'm doing this swing correctly that makes it the ball flight to high? I can tell when the ball is hitting the net where it's hitting is higher than yours by quit a bit lol
@@ThrifTeeGolf definitely would look into some of our hand action videos. Should help you organize the entire club through the hit so we get some nice thumpy strikes 👍
Shooting the trail hip behind, seems like a no go? Low back is always hinky on me. I end up tilting head to target at the top as a kickstart to the downswing. Uh boy. Crunchy lumbar. As I understand your method, the knees never get closer to the toes. Ever? Thanks.
Yes! Absolutely need to protect that spine! And shooting trail hip is definite no go. Can you also elaborate on what you mean by knees closer to toes? I’m sorry I’m not following the question ❤
So basically should drive the golf swing with my shoulders?
@@julianparrish8197 all tissue appropriately! Shoulders play a part to this but need to make sure that the entire system works well together
I'm looking to find a few million dollars for you so you can sit around and think. You are an Iron Byron that can speak.
@@rao4sos hahahahahahaah you’re the man! Appreciate the kind words my man! ❤️👍❤️
Great video! Proper squatting form does however include ankle flexion allowing knees to pass toes. (Doing otherwise is a myth and puts you in disadvantageous leverages/moment arms) also keeping your head up is not proper either. Of course you’re a golf coach not a weightlifting coach and it was not the point you were making but just fyi!
@@AZweiback yes, but we are definitely not dropping enough in the ‘squat’ to actually see a lot of that knee pitch 👍👍
I'll say one thing about you: you sure do enjoy your straw men.
@@iacas lol, and who would my straw men be??
@@elitegolfschools I'm not sure you know what I meant - it's not a who, it's a what. Or really, several "what"s. I don't really see instructors out there teaching what you keep setting up as the "bad" across your videos. Maybe these people exist somewhere, but man… I haven't seen it. It's easy to knock down a straw man.
Kudos for keeping these up - I respect that. But it's your channel, and you're free to knock down whatever straw men you want, so I'll respect *that* and stop commenting. Cheers.
@ ah now I see… thing I want to make abundantly clear is this: you can swing it any way you want and I absolutely respect that everyone has their own ideas about the golf swing, including me. We have not and never will knock down anyone!! This is a channel dedicated to helping people play better golf. Do we have a preference? You bet your ass we do! Do we disrespect anyone or think that they are wrong for doing it a different way? Absolutely NOT! There are plenty of great coaches out there who we admire and respect that have very different views of the golf swing compared to us. So, my friend, very sorry if you took this video as disrespectful to anyone. It is not meant to be. It is meant to provide viewers with a better understanding of OUR preferences ❤️🙏 please hit them well and enjoy the heck out of this great game, no matter what preferences you, yourself, acquire! ❤️❤️❤️
I didn't say you disrespected anyone. I said you built up straw men (instructors aren't widely saying the things you demonstrate) to knock them down. Take care.
