I was 8 years old- this was the first Dreamcast game I opened on Christmas. When we began playing it, we were completely confused (having just upgraded from the original NES; anything that wasn't an 8-bit platformer was bizarre!)... but over the Christmas holiday, we got the hang of it (when the baseball bats finally started flying, it was game over, son!)... I turned 33 a few months back. "Worms" is still a staple in my household.
As someone who was following the Amiga at the time, I think the video almost understated how enthusiastic Team 17 was about Worms before it released. Team 17 was pretty big on the Amiga, at the time, and we already knew them for their releases. But the word, in even the Amiga magazine blurbs, was that Worms was literally Team 17's greatest weapon. This indie game, made by 1 person, and Team 17 were harping about that Worms is likely to be their biggest hit yet. That caused quite a stir, in the Amiga community. It brought the attention on the level of something like Sensible Soccer or Alien Breed, or a big Psygnosis Title. So Amiga gamers were all ready to snap up a copy to find out what the buzz was. True to their word, it was as addictive as they come. One of the things that usually doesn't get mentioned was that Worms: Director's Cut had a feature the other Worms games didn't have. The ability for you to create your own pictures and bitmaps to use as Worms Levels. They have to be converted to IFF form, and there is a transparent layer for that. Anyway, I had folders full of levels made up of pics to use as worms levels. It was a novel thing which was unique to the Amiga, but for non-artists, the level seed, and combination of level generator switches may have worked better for them. I know the director's cut even had this setting called something like (outlines) where instead of it generating the levels like it usually would, it could generate them where all the land masses had maybe half a worm's height of thickness, making some freaky multi-tiered looking levels made out of what would be like taking a rope, putting the ends down where the water would be, and making various shapes out of it and acting out like they are land masses.
Thanks for sharing this wonderful insight on the original release! They certainly broke th emold with Worms and the series just kept getting better. I played the demo on a PC Powerplay disc back in the mid 90's from memory, I couldn't get enough of it!
I just tried testing this again and can't matchmake or view any matches outside of my friends list. Can you confirm if matchmaking is working on your Switch?
@@whatsitlikeau You may just not had anyone join. I don’t have the game in front of me so I don’t know the exact steps, but you go to online, then host game and wait. There’s not a ton of players so you may have to wait 5 mins…
Damn. I haven't heard about Scorched Earth in ages. The hours I spent playing Scorched Earth, Gorillas and Worms as a kid. Man this is giving me memories. The first program I ever wrote was Gorillas. Learned it from a QBasic book I got with my first DOS PC. It's funny. I can't remember my shopping list but I can remember QBasic stuff I haven't used in 25 years.
"In all its original glory," eh? Does it have the main menu music from the Nintendo 64 version? That will weigh heavily on my consideration to buy this game.
With the physical edition releasing in December it might be people still wait for that to release. I love the look and feel of WMD. What would you say are some advantages Armageddon has over WMD?
I’ve read on team 17 website that they reworked everything in HD yet the resolution on my 55" Tv is so poor especially the weapons. It’s so gross pixelated it hurts. Welcome back in 1999
I have a question. In other Worm games, two people can play in a team. Is this still the case? In fact, I'd like to know if this situation is possible: 1 person in on a Switch 2 people are on another Switch we all are in a team, fighting against CPU Team. I know this has been possible in other Worms games.
@@UNUNUN11 Worms, from conception, prided itself on couch multiplayer, so you're covered there. Online is the extra. The online uses surprisingly simple net traffic for it to work well. (This game was made back when Narrowband was a thing.) So online should be smooth, once you find games. I might look into seeing about a Discord, as that is often how a number of slightly more niche (these days) games gets easy players to find. I do hope, as the days go on (and those physical copies release) this game takes off. It really does make for a good holiday game to play.
And Online works great too, there are just not enough switch gamers online yet. Anybody knows if the online mode is cross platform. I doubt it. This Worms is the best of the series. Come on join some online battles guys!! XD
One of the greatest games ever made. I picked it up immediately and it still mops the floor with most modern games!
It's such a fun game. Good for party play

I love hearing memories like this! Worms has definitely made its mark as a party game. Such a great series!
Great review! One of my friends absolutely loves the Worms series, so this one is right up his alley!
It's a blast, especially as a party game!
Grate review
Im glad that we can play Worms Armageddon on modern consoles.
Same! It was a great surprise!

It works online with anyone, not just friends! Please edit

Does the game allow you to zoom in on the worms during gameplay? If not that kind of sucks.
Now that I think of it, you can't? I'm not sure if thats a bug or a feature of maybe I didn't use it during the review but I didn't zoom at all.

It does not unfortunately :(

The physical release looks amazing! I'm not 100% sure of WMD but I feel like Armageddon is more faithful to the original style of play.
one of the best party games
100%
How can i unlock the locked weapons ? . Super banana bomb and Donkey and more is locked 😱
Crate pickups. If you need the achievement you can set the drop rate via the custom match from memory.

I guess its providing a more authentic experience? Thats sucks though as they've done a great job on it.

You can set custom teams, but I'm unsure about hotseat crossed with online play sorry!
there was/is an online game called gunbound
I'll have to check it out
Can you do co-op on the campaign?
On single player for the campaign but you could hot seat it I suppose?
Does it have the soundtracks from the N64 or no?
I'm unsure sorry. There's a music player on there but it just has the track titles, and doesn't say if it's platform specific.
@Lego_Darth_Vader the n64 menu music isn't there. In fact there isn't any menu music 😕
How do you find lobby’s on online multiplayer??
From what I can tell its closed multiplayer so only can play with friends.
Is there local multiplayer?
Only on the same console, not local Lan unfortunately.
@@whatsitlikeau that is fine for me I thought only online multiplayer

I had worms armageddon on my xbox 360, and it looked way better than this. Is this a remake of the 1999 version only?
As far as I know its a remake of the 1999 version. Haven't seen it on Xbox but that's realy interesting
@whatsitlikeau after some digging, the one I had was Worms 2 : Armageddon on my xbox360.

I'm so jealous, I couldn't test it out. Hopefully we get more Switch gamers joining the ranks soon!
I can’t even find one lobby man! Just bought in switch was so happy to play but can’t find a match do you know why??
I think it's only for friends in a closed ecosystem. Not matchmaking
