If this had been released in 1988, the #1 would have been Bruce Willis going against his comedic type to be an action hero.
Or Leslie Neilson moving to comedy
In the greatest Christmas movie EVER!!!!!!
@@KoldenKosmerhe became a comedy icon with the naked gun series. GOAT of that comedic style. Easy.
What’s actually weird is that Bruce has never been a good comedic actor but was an excellent action film star because the proposition was comedic.
@@TBullets85 Actually it was Airplane that was Neilson's first comedy.
Bob Odenkirk así a badass John Wick kinda character in Nobody
He nailed it!!!
The list is for recent films. 10 Actors Who JUST Played Against Type.
I can't believe Heath Ledger didn't make this list. For an actor that was typecast as a leading man in young adult romcoms like 10 Things I Hate About You and A Knight's Tale, playing a gay cowboy in Brokeback Mountain and the Joker in The Dark Knight are serious deviations from type, and the fact that both performances were award winning just drives home the point that he killed it.
List features the actors who "Just Played" ...
As much as Ledger broke type, it was 16 years ago my guy.
Vince Vaughn - Brawl in Cell Block 99. Frickin amazing.
Agreed. He was so good.
Don't forget his FBI/cop role in The Cell with J-Lo and Vincent D'Onofrio. It was very different from what he's usually in or character he's played
One i always think of is Steve Zahn in A Perfect Getaway. He at first seems to be playing his type of character, a kinda awkward but somewhat charming dude. Then that switch happens and he becomes an absolute psycho and kills it!!
I know! I did not see that coming at all. There was no way he could be the bad guy. The Director's Cut shows more of his character and it's awesome.
Yup. Totally agree!!
Ryan Reynolds as George Lutz in The Amityville Horror remake, or the guy in the box in the movie Buried
His work in Buried surprised me for sure.
Still stunned by "Late Night with The Devil" and David Dastmalchian's performance, giving me the absolute goosebumps!
I thought the movie was very good - not great but I agree David was REALLY really good in the role! Loved his performance.
He was good, the movie was disappointing overall.
I'm surprised that you made no mention of the great Bob Odenkirk in 'Nobody'. I for one, never believed he could do hard as nails stuff like that. But he does, and it's a revelation. Just watch the eye-wateringly violent bus fight, and his turns on 'Breaking Bad', and 'Better Call Saul' fade into the distance, fast.
Talk about "against type," just saw Allison Janney in Lou, where she played a long-retired CIA agent living alone in a cabin. She absolutely kicked butt all through the movie!
Agreed. She was outstanding.
In I, Tonya, as well!
As much as I loved Downey Jr's work in Oppenheimer, I still believe that Mark Ruffalo should have gotten the Oscar over him for Poor Things.
I have been waiting many years for David Dastmalchian to get famous.
Monkey Man was actual really good. Dev Patel was great in the film too.
It was shown during Ramadhan/Eid in my country so I missed it. I have always made a point to watch Dev Patel’s movies at the cinema. Add Sobhita into the mix, i have no doubt it’s an incredible movie.
😂it was Garbage
I'm surprised Adam Sandler in UNCUT GEMS didn't make the list. Lots of actors play against type at least once - Yul Brynner in THE MAGIC CHRISTIAN, Richard Burton in STAIRCASE, even David Spade in LIGHT SLEEPER.
Yul Brenner was cast against type as the homicidal android in Westworld.

WhatCulture, This video is fantastic! I liked it a lot!
"Matilder"
Denzel Washington actually being the heavy in Training Day was masterful.
Seriously? No love for Robin Williams in "One Hour Photo"? Talk about "against type"
Yooo...Alisha Wier KILLED IT in Abigail. Can't wait see what she does next!
late night with the devil is a great movie!! if you havent watched it yet you should
Some directors have roles they fully intend to cast wildly different actors for. Henry Fonda's role as Frank in _Once Upon A Time In The West_ comes so strongly to mind I am deeply shocked it's not on this list. Fonda himself went on talk shows later and detailed how he'd done himself up all dark and shadowy and Leone took one look and told him to scrub that crap off. The clip's here on UA-cam; in Fonda's words, "That _______ sonuvabitch *wanted* these baby blues." When he saw the clip of his first reveal he figured it out, how people would have seen a family completely destroyed by Frank's gang then... *"Jesus Christ, that's HENRY FONDA!!"*
(To further expound my point, Fonda nailed his role, too.)
I'm going to go back in time to suggest Henry Fonda as Frank in "Once Upon A Time In The West". Most of Fonda's career, especially early on, featured him as a nice-guy Everyman, or a reluctant hero. Frank, however, was a remorseless killer. He had no backstory and didn't need one. Some guys, even handsome blue-eyed ones, are just BAD. Fonda played it to a tee. He even rejected Sergio Leone's idea that he wear a mustache and dark contacts, reasoning that his natural look would make his character that much more jarring to the audience.
[EDIT: It was actually Fonda who showed up with dark contacts and a fake mustache, and Leone who told him to lose them.]
Actually, Fonda initially came in to play the role wearing dark brown contact lenses, figuring they gave him a more intimidating stare. But Leone said, "No, I want the audience to see your blue eyes and say, 'Oh, my God, it's Henry Fonda, and he's playing a murderer!'"
Yeah - that's a great performance in a great film. Fonda was so unnerving to see in that role. Doesn't make the list for "just played", but definitely a great example from the past of a character totally going against type.
I feel like Ryan Reynolds in The Amityville Horror should also be on this list.
That's not a recent movie
@@Michelle-DiPalo I didn't hear "recent movies" in the video. Maybe implied....?
@@ICanDoItMyself Video title is actors who "just" played against type, insinuating recent movies.
A few that should be mentioned Tom Cruz in interview with a Vampire, Bruce Willis in Die Hard, and Leslie Nelson in Airplane but I guess after the rolls they did they stared in other's like those movies besides Tom Cruz.
I'm not sure if this counts, but I always thought the difference between Statham's character in The Meg is actually different from what he usually does. He usually does movies where he's kicking ads, 3/4 of the movie. The Meg was a normal movie where asskicking wasn't necessary and he played a regular guy. It's still weird watching it sometimes.
They should add (in the last two years) to the title. I am going to go with Henry Fonda in "Once Upon a Time in the West".
Where is Charlize Theron in Monster?
Alisha Weir was truly incredible and often ran rings around even the best of the ensemble around her.
James Spader-from John Hughes brat pack to action hero in Stargate...
Sting was one of the best things about the earlier Dune.
I mean Sydney Sweeney is immaculate. Seems to fit.
Henry Fonda in Once Upon a Time In The West

@@claymccoy one of those videos it s good to know copy & paste. ;)
Imagine if Feyd was played by the man called Sting.
Paul Reiser as Carter J. Burke in Aliens.

loved Late Night With the Devil!
I guess people forget Leo’s performance in Gilbert Grape
Awesome video my dude 👍😅
Ewan with the incisive review again ❤❤❤
Ruffalo against Type? i'd say this is the "other" character he plays. I couldn't help but watch this movie and think, so thisi s what happened if the other brother from Brother's Bloom lives. He even somes up character elements from Now you See Me
Dastmalchian and Jason Butler Harner need to be cast as brothers in something. I really thought it was Dastmalchian in the early seasons of Ozark...
June part 2 😅
How is Sydney Sweeney’s performance “nailing it”? She acts like she just “nails” producers.
this list is nothing more than Engagement Baiting by naming mostly only recent movies.
Vince Vaughn in "Brawl in Cell Block 99".

What the hell is a comfort zoone?
How could you not mention Bruce Willis in Death becomes her, or Macaulay Culkin in the Good Son?
This list is for recent films. 10 Actors Who JUST Played Against Type (And KILLED It)
@@claymccoy Yes and Bruce Willis playing the role of a complete wimp goes completely against his typecast in Death becomes her, as does Macaulay Culkin playing the villain in the Good son. It never said anything about the movies being recent.
@@TomasCorvidea The list literally says 10 actors who JUST (as in recently) played against type.
@@claymccoy And that explains why I haven't seen any of them.
What about Melissa McCarthy in Can You Ever Forgive Me?

@@claymccoy Oops, didn't realise.
What about Jim Carrey in eternal sunshine of a spotless mind?

@@claymccoygood lookin out. Still stand by that though lol
When I heard Robert Downey Jr. was going to be cast this IronMan.I had 2 questions. What who the hell is robert downey jr. and who the hell is ironman
He was initially one of the Brat Pack in the John Hughes movies. He even managed to steal a few scenes in Back to School with Rodney Dangerfield.
Weird Science was the first thing I saw him in.
Monkey Man was amazing, and so underrated.
Dev Patel also broke pretty severely with his younger type-casting in The Green Knight.(2021). Does that count as recent enough?
My fan casting from this casting list:
Hutcherson as Nightwing
Dev Patel as Ras Al Ghul
Dastmalchian as Carl Sagan
Ruffalo would have been the perfect Van Sant Psycho Norman Bates
u see when a human shave your head or just wearing a wig lächerlich
Myself as Miklo Velka In Blood In Blood Out I'm usually your Adult Animation Dad, DC superhero, or Scifi /Action badass but In this movie I was a mixed race Cholo given crap for his White heritage that goes to prison and becomes a Tony Montana like figure totally out of my comfort zone
Polka dot man the most useless but hilarious villain
Daisy Ridley's type is being an awful actress - and she has never went against type
Pathetic list!
No Heath Ledger in Dark Knight? Sylvester Stallone in Copland? Hugh Grant in About a Boy? Bruce Willis in Die Hard? Loads more better than the ones on this list.
Lost me at Daisy😢👎👎👎
Austin Butler was so bad.
L take
Good bad, or bad bad?
In the words of legendary director Ingmar Bergen, "To get the best performance out of an actor, have him play against type." In the example of Alec Baldwin in "The Hunt For Red October", Alec plays a good guy. In real life, we all know that Alec is a jackhole and an arse, so, having him play a good guy requires Alec not to be himself.
wut
I'm really curious about what Ingmar Bergman would have to say to this 🤔
Director Nick Meyer said he got the best performace from William Shatner by making him do numerous takes so he wore the ham out of him.
@@shanerasmussen5225 Must...over...act...and....be...difficult. Tell me Bones, what do you think?
Dammit Jim, I'm a doctor, not a drama critic.
