2025 Honda Prologue Review | The "Honda-Chevy" Is A Better Idea Than I Thought

  • If you didn't know it, we have a Chevy Blazer EV for 16 more months, but if I could have leased the Honda Prologue for the same price at the time, I would have done it in a heartbeat. Why? Several reasons, some of which may be big to you, others not so much. Here are the big three: the Honda looks better, it offers CarPlay / Android Auto, and it's sold at a Honda dealer. In addition to that it doesn't miss any of what's made the Blazer EV a solid buy: the big cargo area, huge back seat, and easy to live with nature. Sure, it's not overly efficient, and it doesn't charge especially rapidly, but shoppers don't seem to mind as it appears that the Honda is the best-selling GM Ultimum EV... How's that for a head scratcher?

    I own a Prologue and am an Android user. If you're logged into your Google account on the car's interface (not through Android Auto), you can send directions to the car's native navigation like you did with CarPlay. It will then precondition the battery if needed and add charging stops.

    This definitely appeals more to mainstream consumers who might be skeptic about buying an EV. Honda design language, physical controls and tech that’s competitive but not overwhelming (and of course, CarPlay too.) Sales so far suggest that it’s working.

    One other comment regarding you saying “Honda dealerships being gentle” compared to others - some are, some are definitely not. Three in metro Atlanta I would never visit again. Aggressive about dealership add-on packages, and rude/confrontational about trade-in value for no reason (one low balled me by $4k and then sent the manager out to tell me I was asking way too much and being ridiculous). For another I went in to test drive - I made that clear up front - she said no less than ten times she hoped I would make her day and buy something, I really need to help her make it a great day. Walked out of there and never went back.

    • @skycaptain3344
      @skycaptain3344 Місяць тому

      As far as the dealership fees one said to me their doc fee was $900 and the dealership package was $2000. I told her that was the highest I’ve found at any Honda dealership, ever, and she became very emotional “No sir, no that’s the standard here in Atlanta. I don’t know what you’re talking about or who you spoke to”

    We own two EVs. Responding to your question, I really like the idea of an Ev battery being repairable and rebuildable in sections. Knowing that all current EV batteries will degrade, I think a modular battery design gives the vehicle itself a much longer useable life.

    Just got the Honda Prologue Touring at the end of 2024 on a Killer lease deal! In Colorado, put $1500 down and paying $282 month for 24 months and 10,000 miles per year. But in this state we also get $5000($3500 in 2025) at tax time from Colorado! If you do the math and divide the $5000 by 24 it effectively reduces the monthly cost to $74 per month for a $56,000 vehicle. Just stupid crazy!!!

    I really wish the IIHS would bring back the bumper standards from the 80s. It was nice to have 'bumpers' that could actually be able bump something without costing thousands of dollars in damage. Bumpers have gotten far too thin and the back one offers almost no protection to the hatch.

    Driven the Blazer EV and Prologue and bought (leased) the Prologue. I just don’t care for the Blazer EV exterior styling. At all really. My experience was the opposite. Had a 2017 Bolt EV and currently a 2020 Bolt EV my wife drives, and both buying and servicing experience at Chevy has been fitting my nickname for car dealers… “scumbag car dealers”. On the other hand the experience with Honda was actually quite good.
    Back to back after test driving a Kia EV9, I stopped at the Honda dealer next door to check out the Prologue on a whim. The styling had kinda caught my eye, but the review from the 1st half of 2024 weren’t extremely flattering… GM controls and switchgear, lack of power… but I was pleasantly surprised when I took out a Prologue Elite. No, it’s not Model Y Performance, nor even a Dual Motor (or EV6 GT-Line AWD) however as noted in the video that’s fine. It has all the power you need to quickly pass traffic when needed and quickly get around town. For buyers coming from a Prius, RAV4 or CRV, they’ll find it to actually be pretty fast and have more than enough power. My advice for anyone who has even a passing interest in the Prologue is to go take one for a test drive before making your mind up about it.

    I think it'll be interesting to see if the modularity means less EV write-offs. I think the EV manufacturer made big strides in making EV's more affordable to purchase but with the basically unpreparable batteries in the skateboard packs they seem to get written off much more often and this I believe could be one of the issues, among many, with insurance rates going up so much. I like the way Volvo has put some of their smaller PHEV battery packs inside the cab so they're much more protected. It's a high value part so you'd want it well protected all other things being equal.

  • @mjhowson2389
    @mjhowson2389 Місяць тому +1

    I don’t think repair-ability was the primary reason GM did the modular pack design, although this will come in handy in rare battery failure issues. I think the design easily allows them to have different total pack sizes for different platforms. GM is quickly cranking out new EV models, all with this core Ultium design. And I believe Ultium will let them switch from pouch to cylindrical cells soon, without any major redesign. The downside, as you mention, is the weight. Maybe over time they can find a way to lighten the pack housing and improve motor efficiency to extend vehicle range.

    We tried a Blazer for 1/2 a day and ultimately ended up with the Prologue Elite. Besides the better Honda handling/ride, better interior ergonomics (center console for instance), the big difference was the Bose Premium Sound system implementation. It was MUCH better on the Honda. Perhaps the Blazer version had a defective sub-woofer or doesn't come with one? We always bring a usb stick with lossless flac files of our favorites to test out the sound system and it was a stark difference.

    I think the modularity of the battery pack is a good thing. Aside from the replacement aspect, in theory an upgraded pack could be put in possibly in part or whole. Battery tech is advancing fast. Though I’m sure an upgrade would come at a steep cost

    Is rather not have to choose efficiency versus repairability but given the Rarity of the need to repair, I will definitely go with the efficiency. FYI I currently own a model y long range. I have to replace it in about a year when my lease is up, and I am considering other cars but I just don't see anything that is as efficient, made in the USA, has such amazing engineering, uses fewer resources in its engineering, such as less wiring, and I really enjoy the tech features.

    I have the 24 Honda prologue elite with 1,980 miles on it. Car has major issues. When turning left or right car has loud thumping sound coming from bottom of it which is the cv axles and also rear sensors have issues. When it’s raining and you’re reversing the car it thinks someone is behind you and keeps slamming on the brakes. Even turning it off in settings it keeps doing it. Took it to Honda and after a week they tell me there is no fix. Tried trading it in and the vehicle has lost 50% of its value. Some dealers won’t even take it for trade. Thankfully it’s a lease.

    I went with the 2025 blazer ev literally because my neighbor has a prologue and I’ve seen at least 5 on the road. Have yet to see the blazer ev with 5-10 miles from my house. And that galaxy gray metallic color is really killer. It changes color from gray in the dark and purple in the sun. It was for my wife and her favorite color is purple so it was the one to get. I am an iPhone user. Have car play in my ford f150 lightning, but do I miss it when I get in the blazer? Honestly not really, but everyone is different. I’m open to change more than most when it comes to technology. The responsiveness of that screen is way better than my 2024 lightning.

    I own a Mach E (which I love), but have owned several great Hondas in the past, so I’ve been following the Prologue Facebook group. I’ve been amazed by the number of total high voltage battery failures already (some in the first few weeks of ownership) as well as multiple axle defects. Every car has some issues, but these are some major failures. I wonder how much direct oversight Honda has for quality control with these?

    Regarding battery packs that can be repaired, my 2022 Mini Cooper S (electric) at 14, 500 miles, suffered a cell failure which put the car into the local Mini-certified shop for a full month. Yes, repairability is important, at least at this point in the evolution of batteries, but the dealer must also have the capability to make timely repairs locally and not have to fly a crew into my city to complete the repair. Also, how well was the battery pack resealed/weatherized upon repair? Factory sealing is assumed to be better than third party, off-site resealing; water ingress to a resealed pack is, potentially, a serious problem. .

    It has been a while since I've purchased a vehicle from either Chevy or Honda, but I do remember the Chevy purchase being far better than the Honda purchase, but the caveat is that the Chevy dealer was really a Buick Oldsmobile (yes, that should tell you how long ago it was) dealer with limited Chevy products while the Honda dealership was part of an "Auto Mall".
    But in reality, all dealerships waste insane amounts of time when it comes to the purchase process as they try upselling service contracts, warranties, protection packages, whatever.

    I’m happy about the additional rear seat room. I don’t need cargo room for 5 on a road trip if I can’t seat 5 comfortably. I’ve seen this in person and really like the looks. I think the Lyric looks good but the Acura likes like a funeral car to me. I don’t really care about a frunk. Never had it in an ICE car so I’m not missing anything. I’m sure it’s nice to have but it’s not a deal breaker for me. I’d like to have CarPlay for messaging & Waze. In the HKG vehicles you can pull up a destination in the app & send it to the vehicle. I think this is the best of the quartet and would definitely consider it if I was in that market.

    I am fairly certain that the EGMP vehicles also use replaceable battery modules. Ultium one-ups this a bit by having BMS per module, allowing for individual modules to have different chemistry whereas the egmp would require the same type of battery to be installed, but the individual modules can still be replaced or repaired, contrasting all of the modern Tesla designs where the individual cylindrical cells are basically glued/expanding foam sealed into the battery box and not replaceable in any reasonable sort of way. I’m pretty sure the Mach-E also uses replaceable modules, but im not familiar with the F150/eTransit (although I’d assume they are similar to the Mach-E). Most “legacy” vehicle manufacturers have at least some concern/consideration about serviceability, it’s mainly the newer mainstream auto makers who are building disposable cars.
    I would 1000% rather have the Honda than the Blazer. Smart phone connectivity for one, and the exterior styling is better. I wouldn’t say I like the Honda’s exterior styling (it’s very boring and generic) but I really dislike the Blazer’s exterior styling. There is something wrong with the proportions. It ends up looking like someone stepped on it and squished it, especially from the back. I actually prefer the interior styling of the Blazer, but GMs silly decision to remove smart phone connectivity would push me to the Honda.

    I thought maybe the DC fast charger would be updated, but you all breezed right past it so still J1772/CCS1. Then again, they _just_ sold most of the 2024s in Q4, so not much time to improve, I suppose. Otherwise it would just be interesting if any of the amenities migrated from different trim levels. Sounds as though they will be the same, though.

      We won't see a native J3400 on Ultium vehicles until model year 2026 at the earliest and it will likely be the Lyriq first. GM has indicated that it won't happen until a mid-cycle refresh for each of the models. This means that the Ultium vehicles launching for MY 2025 like Optiq, Vistiq, and Escalade IQ will all have J1772/CCS at launch. Honda does not have their own timing on this by all indications so expect J3400 maybe in model year 2026-2028.

      Hyundai is the only automaker to roll out an actual vehicle with NACS- there have been no firm timetables from other automakers and many said NACS would appear first in 2025- but they never said all models will convert in 2025. Many folks chose to interpret those statements as all cars would move to NACS in 2025 but that was never said. Stellantis is launching two all new EVs with CCS as we speak.

    The side profile of both the Blazer and the Prologue easily shows they are essentially the same. However, I so much more like the style of the Honda. The Chevy Blazer is just too "swoopy" and has too many disjointed creases and lines. (And I wonder if that might be the reason, in part at least, that the Honda Prologue drastically outsold the Blazer EV in 2024.)

The whole concept of badge engineering across separate corporations is a turn-off for me. A Chevy being sold as a Saturn or a GMC or a Cadillac, OK, I understand. Taking a Mazda 2 and selling it as a Toyota, on the other hand... if I wanted a Mazda I'd buy a Mazda. If I'm at a Toyota dealer I want a Toyota. But that's just me.

    It makes Bolt much faster having a powerfull motor for a smaller vehicle.

    • @shethjones4494
      @shethjones4494 Місяць тому +1

      your numbers are inaccurate, the RWD model has about 220hp and the awd has 288hp, the rear motor is really just for AWD traction, its a very small motor and its not there to make the car extremely quick as in most EVs

    • @nevco8774
      @nevco8774 Місяць тому

      @shethjones4494 Even my numbers were not quite accurate, the fact of my statement and compassion stays true nevertheless. I believe GM is recycling the same design of electric motors for entire lineup of EV they make, no matter the size of the vehicle, they tune the motor differently for different vehicles.

    • @ikjadoon
      @ikjadoon 19 днів тому

      @@nevco8774 There are three Ultium motors (and each has revisions, some w/ slightly higher HP). 240HP + 342HP + 83HP. The Prologue's AWD uses the 240HP in front & 83HP in back, but capped to 288HP total.
      I don't think you understand how "much faster" works with cars. Total HP is mostly irrelevant for how quick (not fast) these cars feel; you need to look at torque (Prologue: 333 ft-lb vs Bolt: 266 ft-lb). Per Consumer Reports tests with the 2024 Prologue (AWD Touring) vs 2023 Chevy Bolt (Wagon Premier)
      0 to 30 MPH
      2.7 sec. - Prologue
      3.2 sec. - Bolt
      0 to 60 MPH
      6.2 sec. - Prologue
      7.2 sec. - Bolt
      45 to 65 MPH
      3.7 sec. - Prologue
      3.5 sec. - Bolt
      They are basically comparable in every slot; they will feel literally just as fast. The Prologue has a meatier torque by 25%, even though it's absolutely gargantuan vs the Bolt (39% heavier; 2ft longer!).

    I would only lease an EV. The tech is just too volatile to buy one. With that in mind how they configure the battery/power train is not important to me. I would definitely take the Honda over the Chevy. I saw a Prologue in the wild and the rear windshield wiper is a joke. If I had one I’d remove it. Also, why to manufacturers continue to put raised letter badging on every square inch or the rear hatch. It looks so cheap and they’re dirt collectors. I’d prefer nothing or maybe they could use decals instead.

  • @nevco8774

    It is better to have modularity since it makes good on the rights to repairs: a Tesla huge 3 piece design will never be able to get repaired in case of being hit from the rear since it's impossible to repair the car by unwelding and welding back a thid of the car.
    Tesla promised from the very beginning in 2012 that it can replace a faulty cell in the pack if needed but never implemented.
    GM has plentry of EV versions on sale due to modularity 2 for Honda-Acura, 3 for Chevrolet, 3 for Cadillac, 3 for GMC, one for a delivery van. I don't know yet about Buick plans.
    That includes both 3 trucks and the rest in SUV. One hallo sedan for Cadillac is coming which I didn't count yet.
    It took ages to bring to market for Tesla 5 models, especially the CyberTruck.
    It took very long time for Lucid to bring its SUV to market. Ford is postponing its EV development due to haphazard combination of components in its Mach-E and lack of ground up EV truck platform. Both EVs in Ford are not modifiable easy.
    That is also the reason other Japanese manufacturers do not have good EV on sale in the USA except Ariya which is not bad but way too expensive and not quite efficient. The German automakers have non modular non repairable EVs especially that huge screen in Mercedes-Benz.
    Volvo EVs are based on Geely huge R&D yet are heavy, nonmodular, inefficient.
    Korean EVs are nonmodular but not so efficient as Tesla.
    I believe the balance was found right by GM. Hopefully GM will crack the nut of profitability in its EVs as well.

  • @Noah_E
