Daily Driving a 503hp Salvage ML63 AMG for 1 year - Expensive to Maintain?

  • If you've ever wondered if it is super expensive to maintain an old, high mileage, luxury, performance vehicle, then check this out! Today I discuss what kind of maintenance and repairs I've had to do over the last year to my salvage title ML63 AMG.
The video was getting long even though I didn't even get to other costs like insurance, excise tax, registration, etc etc. so maybe I'll do a part 2 some other time.
    Hope it's helpful!

Thoughts on a 2013 M63 AMG? Do you think the newer generation would be more reliable (reliable being all relative....)?

Im not too familiar w the 5.5L biturbo in the newer models, but I imagine it’d be somewhat more reliable given advances in technology, but, that’s not always true. For what it’s worth I haven’t heard of as many significant issues w those engines. Maybe someone else here can comment?

    • @monumentauto
      @monumentauto  3 роки тому

Nice! Yeah as long as there aren’t any transmission fault codes to easily pinpoint what’s going on, the cheapest and easiest thing you can do is change fluid/filter and go from there. Could also try resetting the TCU adaptive learning

From Canada own a 2007 Ml63 AMG if you are referring to maintaining the vehicle it is all a matter of how much work you want to do to the vehicle here is a list of whats been done to mine in the last year. Previous owner was Mercedes enthusiast and went crazy with fixing things etc.
    1. Brand new summer tires on stock rims and brand new winter tires on 19 inch Amg rims
    2. Brakes and Rotors all four corners
    3. Every single fluid and and I mean every single one changed and drained.
    4. Spark plugs
    5. All filters and I changed all the filters again already anyways.
    6. All motor and trans mounts
    7. All belts and hoses
    8. Front bulbs changed to brighter better ones over original stock
    9. Thermostat
    10. Navigation is updated to 2020
    11. Three sets of mats, Standard Ml, AMG ML, Weathertech Ml perfect fit.
    12. Res delete with the X pipe in place
And more has been done. Have all original purchase order from new and what's ever been fixed on the car since new. And had the engine and everything pressure tested to make sure no headbolt issues etc.
For the first 5 years or so of the vehicles life it never had to go into the benz dealer for anything other then routine things. And never has ever had a problem other then a new compressor put in once.
Is super solid and well cared for, interior still like new and everything still 100% works.
That's my two sense of the vehicle as far as my ownership. vehicles currently has 143,000 Km's.
And would consider this one the cleanest example I have come across in the last 5 years for sale in ontario. As time goes on they are becoming harder and harder to find in good or excellent shape.

2011 jaguar xfr mint shape/ drove one year put 15,000km on and lost 2000
2013 audi s7 super low kms drove for 10 months, 10,000kms lost 800, but traded it so didn't pay tax trade in value so was ahead i feel.

Really great content on your channel, Nate! I rebuilt a w163 and just finished a w209 build in my garage. I did not buy them from copart but fully depreciated from local owners. I mean those cars were mechanically totalled at 160k miles, but otherwise in great condition. The cost are always more than the car just in parts (i only use OEM quality or better), but it is so worth it to drive these excellent vehicles in fully restored condition. Ive had mine purchased 4 years back at 162,000 miles from Swiderski Auto up in Buffalo for 10k. The car essentially had new tires and brakes but zero maintenance done up under the hood. At a fuel up after purchase I noticed the front of the engine literally spilling out oil. I needed timing chain cover gaskets, valve cover gaskets, oil filter housing gasket, rear SAM module but do water intrusion from taillights (keys wouldnt unlock doors and battery was discharging), and I had water intrusion through the grillslits in the hood which would spill onto the coils and kick out my Main ECU. I would say the most costly things were water related so I now keep her covered with a nice waterproof cover even though Ive fixed the intrusion issues. The Airpump just went out for the suspension that was a DIY for $140 so really not bad. Even if I have $5,000 in repairs for a total of $15,000, putting on another 10,000 miles. Its been actually treating me pretty well and is my go to winter vehicle with hitch and rear DVD options; its very adept. Starts every time, although with a rattle when cold because I believe the timing chain guides up front are loose. Im living with that may fix soon. I Love The over- engineering of the Truck and I have been learning and fixing alot of systems myself. I have an 07 Navigator L that I compare it to with more miles at 240,000 but same year truck. That engine never needed a single gasket at 240k miles just regular oil changes every 5k however, The Navigator has body rust eating away by the driver and rear passenger entry, power steering is gone, shocks are also down in the rear(just put in a new pump and thats not it likely ride height sensor). Also the transmission is going, overdrive gone but what can be expected at 240,000 miles. Build quality wise the German 2007 truck is hands down a winner with ZERO Rust Anywhere and no catastrophic issues. Lots of Little engine leaks sure, but a DAMN Good, Solid, Extremely Over Built, Extremely Fast, Daily SUV. The ML63 is worth about $12,000 currently and the Navigator about $4k in its current state. Navigator cost me $14,000 at 130,000 miles and Ive used it way more sure, only a few small repairs here and there. But Ive Lost $10,000 in Value in that truck where in the Mercedes, even with all the repairs, Ive only lost about $3,000 in value. Both really are great trucks, I appreciate the heck out of the engineering on both sides. But at some point the Navigator becomes a beater thats not worth investing into, while The Benz remains a Benz.

But I'm panicking about gaskets ,seals , things drying up . You think in that amount of time i could be screwed ? like what should I do before hoing back and driving it? get an A service done through mercedes have them grease everything also ? should I throw in new fuel from a jerry can till about half tank at least before start up?

I just know the basics like filling up your tank all the way and using a fuel stabilizer and doing an oil change right before etc. but I'm not sure exactly what to do if a car has been sitting 11 months without doing all that stuff. I think seals/gaskets will be ok since the engine isn't exposed to air and oil doesn't just randomly evaporate. I think adding new gas would help balance out any old fuel in the tank, and getting the A service certainly wouldn't hurt but i don't know if it's necessary. Maybe call MB and see what they suggest for a car that's been sitting for a year. Sorry I couldn't help more!

Wow really? I’m surprised because I bet the ML63 has better tech/comfort compared to the Jeep. Not a bad deal if you can either do maintenance yourself or have the money for dealer maintenance bc it’ll definitely be more expensive to maintain than a Jeep

@@monumentauto the only reason why the Jeep is more expensive is because they hold their value better. More reliable, maintenance is cheaper, and they're becoming collectors items. But me and you both know that the ML63 is the superior vehicle in quality and performance, I've owned a 2006 Jeep SRT8 Grand Cherokee and the ml63 is less common to be seen. Will be adding an ML63 at some point to the fleet.

Ah gotcha. And yes absolutely, would take an ML63 in good shape over an SRT8 any day.

Mercedes dealers nearly always get it wrong ... theyve no idea how to diagnose real issues...just generalise and change out entire system.. useless!

Yeah that’s what I discovered - now I take it only to an independent euro shop
