It's the Camshaft Adjusters, there is a pin that wears the hole it's suppose to stay in till commanded to release to adjust valve timing, there is four of them, the intake ones are worn the worst. there are rebuild kits for them, replace timing chain tensioners too.
100% R. Weaver & Gannicus 102. Hopefully they watch a couple of Tasos Moschatos’ videos and see it’s not a terrible job, just a bit expensive to fix the top end on these.
The variable cam adjuster plates are worn. This pin hole gets worn and causes this till you get oil pressure. Its a known issue on those motors. Its not too hard to fix either. Sounds like more than one on your motor, there are four. 63motorsports sells the repair kits.
63MotorSports sells the cam adjuster backing plates and they are awesome....it is a $500 job for a DIY guy and only takes about 2hrs to get done. Spend the extra $200 and replace the headbolts 1 at a time while youre doing the cam plates and you will be bulletproof!!!! Great purchase
Hydraulic lifters will tick if they sit for a long time because the pressure from the cam forces the oil out of the lifter until the oil pumps back in. If the tick contuses, than it is likely the cam shaft ware problem the m156 engine is known for. The aggressive cam lobes with soft materials combined with extended oil change service intervals did not help. The good news is the ML was not likely pushed as hard in driving as many of the C63 cars and tend to survive longer over the years. A tip on cold start is to let the idle drop before you move the car as the 20 seconds or so will let the oil circulate more before you put load on the engine. The M156 engine was AMG's first designed engine and they were also using some tricks from the racing side of the company. They likely got bit on reliability when going for performance. Recommend oil - 0W40 or 5W40 synthetic - 08' ml63 owner.
A little ML trivia. This model here is the W164 ML 63 which was in production from 2006-2011. The first makeover came in 2009 with a new front and rear bumper and an upgraded command. The 2010 model were exactly the same as 2009 with ONE exception. When ordered new, you had the option to purchase the optional 10 anniversary package, since 2010 was 10 years since the ML 55 came out. With that 10 anniversary package you got a two tone upholstery and the power domes on the hood (So 2011 isnt the only model year with the domes). The domes were actually borrowed from the ML 45O hybrid which needed them for practical reason because of the hybrid tech under the hood, Those ML 450 were lease only and were disassembled by MB which is why none of them exist on the road today. The 2011 model saw a minor makeover with the power domes on the hood standard and new mirror designs. Bumpers are the same as 2009 and 10 models. Engine obviously stayed the same throughout 06-11. Then came the W166 ML 63 in 2012 which ran till 2015 until MB decided to streamline their lineup names and renamed the w166 ML 63 the GLE 63, with some updates of course. But in terms of Naturally aspirated V8 on an SUV this was the last on the ML 63
Also you can hear some lifters ticking. The engine is actually solid, theres aftermarket support for the adjuster plates/pins where you can repair them fairly cheap and upgrade those plates so that they don't run into the sound ever again. The lifters are probably worn out along with the shafts, should be replaced - they should use the new lifters with the coating then the engine should run super smooth and with full power again. Another thing I'd recommend is to check if the bedplate is losing oil. Those are all the known issues of the M156
It would be a great idea to check fluids before starting. Lol. If you can’t do that, then change the fluid to make sure you are not damaging anything by starting it.
Do not overlook the camshaft adjuster plates - get aftermarket ones from 63 Motorsports! You could purchase four plates for the price of one camshaft adjuster. I have one of these myself.
and do NOT cut off the resonators!!!!! Leave them in place and remove the back boxes(rear mufflers).....The resonators are what make the 6.2 really raspy and crisp, removing the back boxes just makes THAT raspy AMG pop that much "pop-ier"
Definitely Camshaft Adjusters! Just had my left banks done 6 months ago at dealership. Once in while during a cold start will it coming back on right slight. I think for what you paid was fair to good deal, and i only say that because for those adjuster repairs you should get both sides done at same time. i did not do that. I dropped $2000 for that repair and a year later its seems i will have to spend more money for other side the noise is starting back in winter on cold starts. As for the tapping noise check oil level. This ML burns through oil quick! I will never sell mine due to all the cool mods!! Still drive it almost daily.
That's super odd - because any M156 suffers from broken adjusters, worn camshafts and lifter ticking. Those are actually the main issues with those engines. And you can clearly hear the adjudster-rattling and the lifter-ticking in the start up.
@@matteiasm.3618 I don't have one but I'm curious. Thinking about replacing my aging daily with one of these or a older Cayenne. Are the cam and cam adjuster problems fixable without a total engine rebuild? What might that cost? Ballpark is fine.
Mercs used to be always badged up as 63s because in Germany when there is a decimal point they always round up the engine has 6.208 litres hence the badge was 63 as it was rounded up
That would be right when they figured that problem out. I was disappointed by the limp shift during the pull - but it might be that I'm comparing to a 2013 C63.
Pretty sure they upgraded the head bolts from 2010 onwards because of failure problems? These motors were using a bucket/shim for valve clearance, not sure with the 2011 model? Could be a case of re-shimming ?
That noise are the cam adjusters they are going bad and by the way it sounds it’s really bad you will Need to change them ASAP ! Not cheap to fix… If you don’t the engine will explode !! Great looking car though and a good deal I would say.
Time for collab with legitstreetcars ?? Would be a huge win for both…? 🎉🎉😊 Questionable win, if you can repair engine for the parts only then yes, else no…chain tensioners oil pressure driven, headbolts..
WRONG. Please leave the diagnosis to the experienced M156 owners on here. Cam phase adjuster locking pin failure. Easy fix and cheap with aftermarket kit.
When you wanna buy for a good price Mercedes Cars, you can buy also Meredes G-Wagen by a army auction. Many Army's use G-Wagen, like Germany,Austria, Switzerland, Canada.
I would like to have another ML63 AMG I loved them, I smoke Dodge Demon and Corvette Z06 to this M156 engine just install black series supercharged from mercedes-benz it will boost up another couple 200hp.

the cam gears should also be replaced

Thinking that when this started

Had a 2013 ML 63 AMG for 2 years, was sweet when it wasn't on the rack :X. Cylinder 5, check engine screwed me for 20k in repairs.
Cylinder 5 got me too. Damn.
It needs timing chain kit + tensioners with all the cam adjusters while you're in there
Cam shaft adjusters for sure. Repair kits are available and it's does not cost that much money to fix it.
The 12 days idea is fantastic.
This is the legit last AMG made. M156 and M159 are the best engines.
Love that exhaust sound! I love what you guys are doing and to see that not all buys come out positive, just real!

I had an ML that sounded exactly like this. Fuel injectors were the culprit.
Can you just run a tank of gas with a cleaner in it or did the injectors require service? Worst case replacing injectors is not a big problem.

Timing chain tensioner on the outside of the motor
Sounds like cam plates to me. Its a known issue on that motor till you get oil pressure.
Thats What i think the chain needs replacement
That tapping noise that went away was a stuck lifter, that happens a lot on the m156. A short drive fixes it ysually
I've never seen you 2 check the oil before starting the engine That's the1st thing you check guys
Mercs used to be always badged up as 63s because in Germany when there is a decimal point they always round up the engine has 6.208 litres hence the badge was 63 as it was rounded up
It was also to point to the classic late 60's 6.3L used in the 600 and the 300SEL.
100% camshaft adjusters issues very common on m156
This one might be a contender for the head bolts that like to snap
That would be right when they figured that problem out. I was disappointed by the limp shift during the pull - but it might be that I'm comparing to a 2013 C63.

@@tonykelly6087 No, they don't. They use hydraulic lifters. No adjustment necessary.

Your mate's wrong about the wheels. Those are the standard wheels from the later W166 ML63 (2014).
Cam adjusters and lifters definitely, possibly intake cams will need replacement. Looking at 4k,ish in parts.
Its actually not the last ml63 and this one you guys have might be a 2009 version
2009 models did not come with Blind Spot Assist... it's a 2011.
Yes, they’re wrong as a 2015 is the last ML63 but this is def a 2011
I suspect they meant final year of the 6.2L ML63, in 2012 the switched to the 5.4L motor (maybe)
old AMGs are such sleepers they're great
That's the timing chains hitting the tensioners and guides that sound you hearing

Yes timing chain needs replacement and tensioner possibly chain guides
Never been so blue balled in my life than with those Porsche vids

timing chain tensioner & maybe timing chain too

My 2011 Lincoln Navigator did the same thing for a few months till the timing completely went on it
I love how you just add oil and most of the problems go away.
8:17 the Bently why is on the trailer
If you can get it running good for less than 10k I think it’s a good deal
We call them the vanos the timing chain holders on the top of the engine they make this noice with first start and then nothing

WRONG. Please leave the diagnosis to the experienced M156 owners on here. Cam phase adjuster locking pin failure. Easy fix and cheap with aftermarket kit.
Did he just say they’ve never checked the oil on this car!? 🙆🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️…
Camshaft Adjusters Wear Problem : rebuild kit or change them or upgrade them
Please please please do more content with this ML63. I own the same car and barely any video on it
What happened with car and the next cold start did Lucas heavy oil solved the problem
I think it has problem with engine oil one way valve... Cause not enough oil at cylinder head...
The noise will come back when cold start the cam adjustment plates need replacement
