    Good job😎
    One question, when you use "real " Reed, which force is it ? I would like yo compare.. I use a metal berg larsen 120 SMS with vandoren Java red 2. Do you have an idea about the force i must use with synthetic Reed ? Thanks

    • @aminnellis
      @aminnellis  5 років тому +3

      For me, synthetic reeds have always been initially easier to play. There's almost no resistance (depending on the size you get), altissimo is usually easy, etc. In fact, when I first started playing altissimo I could never get the notes out on cane reeds, and when I switched to synthetics, they popped out like nothing, so I thought they were magic and ended up using them for years. It took me a while to realize, but, that there was a "core", something really nice about my sound missing with synthetic reeds, no matter which kind I've tried (Legere, Fibracell, Fiberreed, Plasticovers, etc). When I went to college I had been playing synthetics for about 3 years, and my first teacher recommended that I try experimenting with cane reeds again, since my technique had grown since the last time I had tried cane reeds, and over time and with a lot of experimentation, I fully switched back to cane reeds because I found that it opened my sound up in a great way.
      That's just my own subjective experience, and everybody is different. I would experiment with whatever reeds you'd like to try and pursue the sound that you need to hear at whatever point in your playing you're at. You'll hopefully know which reed, mouthpiece, etc, makes you feel the most comfortable whenever you're playing, and with a lot of work on developing your sound and technique, you will gravitate towards whatever you want to hear. Keep chasing the sound that you hear! :)

      Eric Gallois Also, lately I’ve been playing on size 3 or 3 1/2 Vandoren reed for tenor. Each brand of reed is slightly different, ie a 3 carbon fiber reed won’t necessarily be the same as a 3 Vandoren or what have you, but there are charts online that you can use to compare before trying new reeds if you need to!

    • @aminnellis
      @aminnellis  4 роки тому +2

      Thanks so much! Synthetic reeds were so convenient; I ended up only using them for a short time really before going back to using cane. For me they're just so much more raw and you can just rip into it in a more earthy and natural way and it just pushes the sound to a really nice core balance for me. The horn in this was a Trevor James Horn 88, which is such a sick horn but I don't play on anymore

      @@aminnellis what's your tenor now? I play the TJ pro series 'Signature Custom Raw' and LOVE it. Have you tried Fibracell? They have satisfied my reed need, and I think I'm largely done with cane. If you play ~2.5, try a Fibracell 4.5 or 5. Peace

    • @aminnellis

      @@spontaneousgroovincombusti2902 That's awesome! Right now I'm playing on a Tenor Madness Custom Tenor, which is an awesome sax store based close where I live in Waterloo, IA. The high end TJ horns seem absolutely incredible, I've never seen one in person! Before I tried these Fiberreeds, Fibracell were a main part of the setup. I loved how easy they were but after playing them for years and then switching back to cane, I realized that there's a core earthiness and thickness almost to the sound that I hear with cane reeds that I was missing that whole time with the Fibracells, so I've been pretty solid with keeping cane since then. I only ever used like size 3 1/2 of them and now that I'm playing 3's or 3 1/2's for cane I'd definitely go with a 4/5 or 5 if I tried them again for sure!

    I just ordered the Berg 105/0 SMS tenor mouthpiece. I like the Berg but I can't get it to seal on the reeds and all my reeds are too wide for this very thin mouthpiece. Is this suppose to the be case or is this one made too thin?

    • @aminnellis
      @aminnellis  Рік тому +1

      It is thin but shouldn't be a huge deal. You could shave the reeds a little but doesn't it still play fine? If you're just getting used to the mp it might take a bit before you can play it comfortably anyway

      The best advice that I can give is that it's absolutely best to experiment to find what works for YOU. With Berg Larsen, the second number determines how big the baffle is; 0 is the highest, and 3 would be the lowest, so a 100/3 would have a much less bright, cutting sound and a more perhaps "smooth" sound than a 100/0. I definitely like Berg Larsen pieces, so it wouldn't hurt to experiment and try some out for sure! I hope that this helps! :)
      El mejor consejo que puedo dar es que es absolutamente mejor experimentar para encontrar lo que funciona para USTED. Con Berg Larsen, el segundo número determina qué tan grande es el deflector; 0 es el más alto, y 3 sería el más bajo, por lo que un 100/3 tendría un sonido de corte mucho menos brillante y un sonido más "suave" quizás más que un 100/0. Definitivamente me gustan las piezas de Berg Larsen, ¡así que no estaría de más experimentar y probar algunas con seguridad! ¡Espero que esto ayude! :)

    • @aminnellis
      @aminnellis  Рік тому +1

      Probably eventually if you practice enough and have small enough reeds. Just takes time, but don't force yourself to play on a mouthpiece that doesn't work for you right now if you can get good normal results easier on something else

      @@matesurmanidze9615 there's no best mouthpiece, you have to just try a bunch out and see which ones work. 200 bucks should get you a really good one though, but you can play 5 of the exact same machine made (these days) mouthpiece and they'll all be a little different, that's why you have to experiment until you find one that you like. Otto link, vandoren, and jodyjazz are all solid brands to start looking at first
