    We had a trick for hanging plastic. Run 2 inch tape on the surface, centered where the edge of the plastic will be 3 feet above the pour. Rub it down good. Then the tape overlapping the top of the plastic goes onto that layer of tape. Takes twice the tape and time, but never had plastic fall into the pour. Sometimes it's worth it and sometimes it's overkill, but we often had day labor helping with larger pours and they're in a hurry and not careful about splashing onto siding, bricks and doors.

    Not just in business, but in life in general. I sometimes wonder if overprotecting young ones isn't why some of them get easily frustrated and expect life to always be unicorns farting rainbows that smell like maple candy.

    How do you stay motivated? First, be realistic about your expectations. You know that there will be x number of days that the weather will spoil plans - so that was one of those days! Second, have something to do on those days - PM, start a counter top, play in the wood shop, use the saw mill if it's fully covered. Most importantly, be grateful that you have a great business and get to work with your son's everyday. Don't sweat the small stuff.

    Morning Tom,
    Hope you enjoyed your long weekend. As long as you keep your customer informed and keep communicating with them, most accept it. My son operates a lawn aeration business and weather is everything to us. We absolutely need dry ground or run the risk of rutting a yard or getting stuck and making a freaking mess. Had 1 customer all but demand we show up because he "HAD TO HAVE" it done so he could have time for grass to grow. My son gave him the ultimatum that he accept ALL responsibilities of what I just explained and gave him a price. Needless to say he waited until things dried out😊😊😊.
    You parking the mixer off the road by the school was very decent AND responsible on your part. Sitting on a hill-----Safety 1st 😊.
    Your compliment to Steve at the end was really accepted well. His heartfelt reply had me rolling. Your comment about a boring slab was funny.
    Good video, regardless. Can't all be 60 yd with stamped concrete and color added. I bet these very projects are what got you started. Be thankful they were there. 😊😊

    When I was building/remodeling houses the weather was always an issue. That was 35 years ago. Seems everything was great until we pulled a roof off, set up to paint, pouring a driveway, or anything that rain could ruin and that’s when it was guaranteed to rain. I feel your pain. We all have to dig in and go no matter the weather. 😊

    I poured a slab 18’ x 20’ x 4” thick 40 years ago at the end of my driveway by my house. Used 1/2” rebar on a 16” pattern. I’ve had cement trucks and dump trucks drive on it many times. Even a 60,000 pound well drilling rig. I did not cut it at all. No cracks to this day. I think rebar is an inexpensive plus. In case people argue that. 😁 Love seeing you use wire and rebar in your projects. 😊

    Only once we weren't adequately prepared and had a large driveway with a part of one corner got the dimple finish. We had plastic and covered the way we usually did when heavy rain is moving in as we were cleaning up. What we weren't prepared for was wind gusting to 68 MPH. Not enough weight on the plastic and a wedge was exposed. Customer wasn't exactly happy, but it barely was noticable to the casual observer unless pointed out.

    Great job Tom, excellent timing for the other job as well. Hey i noticed something, on your concrete rakes there is no "hook" on top. We use to have them with a hook for picking up the wire, or rods either one. It save much bending over, and sometimes the mud crew would get lazy and not bend over and pick up the wire. You can weld a pcs of 1/4" bar on the top of the rake, and filp it when you need to pull wire or rods. Just a thought that may help you guys. Another beautiful job, despite the weather, and the weather is going to do what it does, BUT the Meteorologist SHOULD most times know pretty close, with all the tech they have now. Like the video as always, i have learned much from you Tom, so many new things, especially in the "stamps" and the chemicals. it's the difference between night and day. Tell the editor :) Hey for us. ❤🙏 Those scooters looks like tons of fun, and fairly inexpensive....

    • @mikebarushok5361
      @mikebarushok5361 Місяць тому

      I've seen concrete placers with and without the hook. We always used the ones without, because sometimes it works better to flip it over for pushing concrete. And we had a homemade puller that was 3/8 rebar bent around to be a hook and with a wooden 1X1 for a handle. That hook was safer when working between rakers that were crowded together. Often it is just easier to use your hand or the corner of the rake.

    Here in Missouri it rains most of the week and just a few days it doesn't. Trying to plant in the garden is not working like it should. Can't till and so my wife started putting plastic down, cutting holes in to plant. I hurt my leg on mother's day that I got 21 stitches in and wasn't allowed to walk much. Well it's getting better and I have been able to mow now. Last year we didn't get much rain all year. The weather people here manly focus on the weather around Springfield and Branson and Arkansas and watching the weather around us and how they mess up so bad that we are on our own. So it's all a guess.

On to the grading and topsoil, material delivered on a dry day, started the next morning 1/3rd seeded by 1 o'clock and started laying straw (in a down pour!) been 5 days of on and off rain cant get it dry enough to finish the rest of spreading top soil to seed! By the time I'm done it'll be July! (then I'll NEED it to rain!)

    Tom back in the day when I was working in concrete we always hung plastic. Another thing my Uncle had us do if we were pouring a driveway to say a city sidewalk or another concrete area he had us mix up a thick solution of like Tide soap and brush it on the existing concrete so the new mud we poured it would not stick. Now days who knows if you could do that with all the EPA regulations. Guess it would have to be biodegradable soap now days. The weather app that you talked about in the beginning reminds me of years ago when I started my building business I would ask my Dad at times, Dad do you think it is going to rain today? He would say, "If I could tell you if it is going to rain or not I would be a millionaire".. The weather people can't even get it right and never could. Tom you are correct to just keep up the good attitude and move forward..

    Oh boy!! How many pours can TSH screw up before losing your good name? But the weather man screws up every day and like, oh well. He's using 80 billions of dollars of equipment to give a wrong forcast every day, yet his job is secure. I worked outside all my life. I feel you Tom. Check the forcast, look at the moving map, go look outside. Nothing else you can do, but like you said, be prepared. I've mentioned this before, talking about the pressure on you. You do handle it better than most, kudos for that!! Those small projects get put back for many reasons. Small for TSH but plenty big for the homeowners. Just push ahead, nothing else there for options. I've seen you guys handle it many times over these past years. Im always amazed at your abilities not to just handle the change in weather, but keeping a cool attitude during all that stress!
