  • As requested by many, here's my thoughts on "Soloing Comprehension" which...for me...is directly developed by your "INFLUENCES" along with where & how the "APPLICATION" of your "Musical Moments" are used.

Thank you for your kind words and for watching.
Today, I will be recording a "S & T" about "Nashville's BIGGEST Problem: The Legends Are GONE!" featuring some detailed "insight" about how it was to be a "young" guitarist in Nashville back in the 80's & 90's & having "access" to "hear & see" Legendary guitar pickers whereas now...they simply are "gone"...and the few that remain are "inaccessable"...which is "Why" Young Nashville Guitarists have no "guidance" worth having...both "musically & business-wise".
Thank you again for your kind words and my prayers to you, your family and friends...Sincerely I am...Dan;)

I think I feel the same, I’m self taught, I’m 72 years old, I’m influenced by Clapton, Hendrix, Skynrd,SRV. B B King, Allman bros, love country too, so many through the years. Learned some licks from Arlen Roth tapes, that really helped me. Play a little slide , also took up the mandolin. Lot of fun. Like the way you think. So my style is influenced by so many. Peter Frampton is great too. I could go on, after a while it will all gel into some good improvising. Thanks for sharing.

Words of wisdom their my friend! I myself like to listen to some of my favourite licks just to understand them and hopefully create something myself from it. Our inspiration from the masters is what helps us create our own style and licks but we need to remember that those licks from the legendary players are and were created by that player and what inspired them and not an exact copy of a lick that they just learned. And that’s what gives us our own musical individuality.
Players like yourself that’s been playing professionally since being a child is a testimony to the average player and aspiring musician hoping to gain knowledge from your advice as a busy professional. Cheers my friend! Great video as always and great sharing of experience!

All good stuff Brother Dan. Those licks we learn must have their place. I’ve studied licks and found places to use them but we must be careful and not be repetitive with them. As far as theory is concerned I’ve decided about 10 years ago to study theory and found out I already knew a lot of it I just didn’t know what it was called. I agree totally! It’s not for me. I just want to play and learn and continue to improve. Thanks for the video Brother.

You just hurt my soul at around the 12 minute mark but the truth hurts and works. Can’t wait for the follow up video to this conversation.
Although I thoroughly enjoy sitting for hours mastering one Brent Mason phrase, the deep substance is lacking to push through a 3-hour impromptu performance.
Thanks and have a blessed day,

Thank you for this. It's a hard truth for me. I haven't been happy with my playing at all the last few years and I attribute it to liking too many styles and wanting to do everything. I am a bedroom/home player, but I find it hard to focus on just 1 thing. I hear some country stuff one day and want to learn to do that, but then the next day I hear Van Halen, and want to do that.

I believe we all "suffer" from "so much to learn...to listen to...to want to play like" syndrome...and it is ALL achievable to some degree...but for me...the key is "Time Management + Focus + Outcome Expectations = Positive Returns";)

Yep I agree very much with how we practice and learn being in correlation with what we are trying to accomplish on the instrument. Time is precious. We are all guilty of learning a riff or a lick just for the sake of knowing we can, or for showing off while others look on, but speaking only for myself, I need to stay focused on the things I can use for playing live or in the studio.
Our paths have been different, but very similar in a lot of cases. I spent a lot of time in Nashville, but mostly stayed around Atlanta and all over the SE playing shows where I was/am the singer and I play guitar (mostly). I am a little younger, and record deals changed in a big way when the internet came along. Back in the day the potentials received 3 song deals and were spoon fed to the audiences through the airwaves to achieve familiarity. Then if they caught fire through the airwaves the record label would record an album for them and start pushing them through promotion.
I was caught in a time where the 3 song deals dissolved and record labels (thanks to the internet) expected independent artists to build a 100k following with 50k indie CD’s sold (just before downloads took over) and $80k of merch sold annually. So we had to learn on the fly what was working to make any kind of name for ourselves. Much more work for the independents.
It’s a strange, yet wonderful business and a guy like me had to maintain my love for the music, while writing, recording, performing, and trying to self promote at a high level.
If I had only known them what I know now!
    Anyway, I’m rambling.
You are most definitely cut from the cloth of survivors in this business. Great attitude and demeanor, excellent skill set, cool as hell, etc. Just going with the flow. The best type of guy for the biz.
And man, what a view! The keys are Heaven of Earth!
All the best, Dan. Keep ‘em coming, brother!
    Matt

Had no idea that you liked Van Halen Dan. Awesome stuff. With his stuff, I just try to get the feel right and some cool parts. His style is all about falling down the stairs and landing on your feet. This video hits home to me, I have spent a lot of time studying players and parts. I have no real need to learn Eruption in full, if I can pull out the tapping part at the right time and the right place in the right key, its enough for my toolbox. But I do feel like I have trouble creating my own sound. Started with the Allman Brothers when I was a teenager, sometimes I just fall right back into that Duane/Dickey thing too, ha. SRV is another one, Hendrix, even Neil Young. And then I like all the great country pickers too for the most part. Learned to hybrid pick from them, guys like Johnny Hiland and Jerry Reed.

So many wonderful pickers to "pick" from...and Eddie is at the top of the "Flash Rock" style for me;)
