Why Do Bad Things Happen to Good People? | His Grace

  • Brock worked hard to support his family. And when his career took off, he felt like he had life by the tail-until the day the car he was in was struck by a large truck. In an instant, his life changed dramatically, leaving him to wonder why bad things happen to good people.
In his frustration and anger, Brock sought to understand. He’d never wanted to be poor. He’d worked hard to build a successful career, and to have it taken away-by someone who chose to text and drive-was hard.
After questioning God, Brock became a changed man. The accident robbed him of his financial security and a career he loved, but it softened him. His relationship with Jesus Christ and his compassion for the suffering of others grew.
Brock sees the evidence of God’s love for him not in monetary success or in the good or bad things that happen, but in his children’s love and his wife’s kindness. Brock’s hope in Christ teaches him there are good things to come.
Why do you think God allows bad things to happen to good people?

When I was in Germany on a mission in the '60's I had one landlord who was a survivor of Auschwitz (complete with number tattooed on his forearm). He had lost his wife and family in the Holocaust. He cooked us lunch one day and then asked us this question, "Why do bad things happen to good people?" At age 20 I did not know that this was a question that philosophers had grappled with for thousands of years. I was also not old enough to have experienced anything really "bad." I gave him the best answer I could..."they happen as a test...testing whether despite it all we will choose HIM." He seemed quite satisfied with that answer. But discussing this with him as tears streamed down both of our faces was a never-to-be-forgotten experience. But, in the end, our discussion ended up saying exactly what Brock has told us in this video. Now I am 75 and have experienced "bad" things...the sudden and unexpected death of two successive wives, loss of job, loss of virtually all material possessions. But I did choose HIM and at this point in my life am happy and whole.

I’m 31. I’m 15 brain surgeries in, had an emergency hysterectomy 2 weeks ago, chronic pain due to nerve damage and medical mistakes, no children, single, survivor of childhood sexual abuse at the hands of a missionary, and in major medical debt. To say that I needed this an understatement. All of those things have happened to me, but I refuse to let them define my story. The ONE constant in my life is Christ. When my testimony of the church dwindled I was left with the love Christ has for me. I still don’t plan on going back to church, but I will never ever be able to deny that He is my savior and redeemer and that his love for me is beyond any humanly measure.

@@ce6236 Actually we are members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and yes we are Christian. I follow Jesus Christ in every way I can, and I renew my commitment to follow him each day that I live. I also my Savior Jesus Christs approval and love each week when I go to church. Just because you believe in a different church or different religious details then me does not mean that my journey following the Savior isn't Christian. To endure and understand suffering as this man has done, is to draw closer to and become more like God. When we are acquainted with the 'theology of suffering' that an unfragmented gospel teaches, the world's woes and tragedies have purpose and we can then begin to understand why bad things happen to good people. A great talk that explores this idea: Francine R. Bennion's 'A Latter-day Saint Theology of Suffering'

Hope you do. You will find "the words of salvation" therein. Be aware though that it isn't all sweetness and roses after baptism. You will be subjected to tests and trials, and you will be left to wander alone, seemingly, sometimes, so you can prove obedience even when you aren't being upheld by The Spirit. However the rewards afterward are exceptional.

Latter-day Saints definitely should be kind, because we believe in it, but there's something in it for you that is even better than good company. When you seek truth from God and receive a witness from Him through the Holy Ghost, no one can ever take that away from you, and it opens you up to a better life. Get a copy of the Book of Mormon, study it, and ask God directly in prayer to know that it is true. You won't regret it.

I went through a hard time after having been laid off unexpectedly from a good job, when I was older, my ward and brothers and sisters were all there for me every step of the way , after going through a rough patch I was back working ,but now to the virus and high risk of my age and health I am told to stay home and wait till it passes, what is the first thing that happens, ? I receive calls of love support and offers of assistance, I think of all the people who are alone , who have lost their livelihood, or small businesses, or loved ones and have no one and I know ow fortunate I am to be part of his church and to be loved by such good people I am truly humbled and grateful

The fact that Brock (this man) shared his story is absolutely incredible. Sharing your testimony can be hard especially when the trial(s) was/were so hard to overcome. But, I can tell that the experience that he went through strengthened him and his faith along with all of the people that have seen this video in that last 5 1/2 days, and the people that he has interacted with.
My mom has a chronic illness called Chrone's Disease. It is an intestinal disease that pretty much affects her digestive system to the point where her diet is limited to fruits and vegetables, along with nuts and occasional meat. When my mom was diagnosed by her doctor in Georgia, I remember her coming home and looking super tired. Her immune system was so weak, that within 6 months of her being diagnosed with Chrone's, she got shingles. This was over 3 years ago, and to this day she prepares her own meals, as well as meals for her 6 kids and husband. It hurt me to see my mom in so much pain, losing most of her body mass and being so weak.
For a while, I wondered and pondered this same question that so many people do, "Why do bad things happen to good people?" My mom is and has pretty much always been my greatest role model. I haven't always had the greatest relationship with her, but I know how hard she tries and how good she really is. I struggled in accepting that my mom was going through that big trial in our lives and that God was still there and cared about her and myself. I even wondered, "If Jesus paid for our sins, why do we feel them? Shouldn't they at least be less painful?"
Big trials are at times still hard for me to accept, to overcome. I still have trouble understanding what my Heavenly Father has in store for me. But as for now, I can be content with the fact that I will never know everything.
It is SO easy to leave Him, to fall astray because "He's not listening, He's not there." But I've come to know that He's always listening, so he is there, and he DOES care! I am FAR from perfect and I struggle with the simplest of things, but I find comfort and strength in the knowledge that he knows me and he loves me, that he understands the exact pain that I'm going through.
The Come Follow Me curriculum that the church put out for individuals and families is my family's scripture study every morning. Through this study, I have come to know my Savior better. I feel that I understand what he did and why he did it, and I am excited to learn more, to come closer to Him, and to continue to find myself, be better, to become more like him.
We both still struggle, but we are more united as a family through the gospel, we can bear the pain with help from each other and from our Redeemer and Lord Jesus Christ. My mom is no longer feeling the effects of the shingles virus that hurt her, and she has gotten way better at keeping her diet so that she doesn't have constant pain. ❤️❤️❤️

I loved this article! Yes, I feel pressured to serve a mission by grandparents at times, but I love what the second girl said, that when she really opened up and counseled with her parents, that she knew that they would love her no matter what she chose! I’m sure our Heavenly Father feels the same way! But, my favorite part was the quote at the bottom of the article from President M. Russell Ballard.
He said, “Once you know the Lord’s will, you can then move forward in faith to fulfill your individual purpose. … Is it possible for two similarly faithful women to receive such different responses to the same basic questions? Absolutely! What’s right for one woman may not be right for another. That’s why it is so important that we should not question each other’s choices or the inspiration behind them.” ❤️

We must do understand that it is just a part of ourlives...everything has a purpose. The only thing we can do is to endure them all whatever it is or whatever it takes. We must do remember that our experiences in ourlives when it comes in trials problems or bad things that occured even crosses our ways has not been like Job (Job in the old testament); it is not even a bit of it. So, let us be happy for that and be not a dramatic person coz i've been there too. I know how it felt, but we must move on and keep going to continue to do good everyday. Lets us keep on praying and read scriptures everyday too, it will help alot. God bless us all.

Brock, it's been well over a decade since we've spoken...not since the WLG days...Team Miles! I was wondering how you were doing and hoping life had delivered to you all the success you were working so hard for. I've been going through a really dark patch in life myself lately. In the mornings, over the past few days, I've been watching these videos looking for hope and answers to my current situation. I was surprised and moved to see your video, especially since I was recently wondering how you were doing. I can't fully express how much I've needed the answers you've shared today with me through this video from four years ago. I know it's been a long time, but I would love to reconnect with you somehow. Your brother in Christ, Chris

Incredible message on the only things that matter- gratitude and a testimony of the Saviors Atonement.

I just finished reading a quote by former apostle Delbert L. Stapley that very much applies to what Brock says on this video,
''Any affliction or suffering we are called upon to bear may be directed to give us experience, refinement and perfection.''
It is pretty obvious-as Brock testifies on his ordeal-that Brock is being refines and perfected by his trials.
God has a plan for us, He knows it all but, gives us only a little here and a little there; so that our faith may grow in His direction, accepting His timing and work in our behalf.

Bad things happen to neither good or bad people; rather, only to those who fail to recognize the value (or good) of ALL their experiences.

Beautiful and heart wrenching. But Tbh, No One should go bankrupt because of 'Vis Major' accidents like this. Beautiful, inspiring as always..just frustrating that predatory insurance companies make billions while wonderful people like this have thier livelihoods stolen from them

just remember, good and bad are social constructs for the most part on a human scale. what you consider "good" your nemisis might consider "bad" and vice versa.

We are here to learn much.... "He doeth as He doeth, and what recourse have we? He carrieth out His Will, He ordaineth what He pleaseth. Then better for thee to bow down thy head in submission, and put thy trust in the All-Merciful Lord." ~ Abdu’l-Baha, Baha'i Faith

Many times I tell my own subscribers that this is only the struggle of life. Known as bad luck--or overcoming adversity. The truth is that the universe dishes out the same bad luck to everyone. Even those born with a trust fund. The difference between someone who never seems to have anything good happen and the one who everything seems to always work out is reaction to bad luck and prior planning. Do you have a plan if your spouse were to die or if you lost everything in the stock market? Another example--I had a plan in advance when I bought oil stocks already halfway to the bottom--then they got crushed again. I already had another fund that was equally crushed but looked promising, much more so in the future recovery. I not only survived but profited a year later. Because my technique is simple--I picture worst case scenario and then plan for it. In advance. You can't control this ruthless universe but you can control what you will do if it throws that meteor at you. And that is the difference between those who crumble and those who succeed no matter what happens. Hope that helps someone out there--Charles

As long as we never accept that there is karma and reincarnation it will be difficult for so many people to understand why bad things happen to good people. Either they will think that God is not real or God is not all powerful.

Sometimes I just wonder "was that really necessary? Was there no other way I could learn this lesson than go through this trial?" I wish there was a clear-cut answer to that question.
