I have the FGX800c and it’s one of the best guitars I’ve ever played. Sounds and plays like a $1.5k guitar. I also have an 80’s Seagull SM and a Taylor 224ce-K DLX.

Yamaha makes it hard to want to upgrade. Their lower cost entry acoustics (FS and FG models at least) even made in China sound FANTASTIC. But I’m still looking for a slightly used and not full price LS-26. Someday. Someday.

I have the brown tobacco burst and added a brass nut and brass saddle with ebony bridge pins with d’addario X strings medium/light. It was a great sounding guitar and now it sounds so percussive and much more tonal. I also removed the glossy poly finish and sprayed it with a matte clear coat. I love this guitar more than life itself now😋

Hello Jarvis! Long time fan here, and a new fan of these amazing yamaha guitars. Thanks for giving this guitar deserved recognition. It holds it's own up against guitars I own worth 10x as much. Couldn't be happier with it.
Thanks again and God bless buddy.

The more you play it the better it sounds - I have a 5 year old FG800, an LL6 and an LL16M - the FG800 is the best sounding of all - and I have the action super low with no buzzing - great neck - if anyone thinks this is a beginner guitar they are out of their mind.

I'm curious about "the neck" of your fg800 is it too thin or thick enough for big hands? Is it c shape or v shape neck?

FG800's probably the best "entry-level" guitar on the market in terms of overall price/value ratio. Only real downside to it is that it usually comes with the action set higher than it needs to be so a professional set-up is strongly recommended for it along with the rest of the "Green Label" FG line upon purchase for that matter. Other than that, it's simply amazing that Yamaha can put out an acoustic guitar with traditional "high-end" features like a genuine solid tonewood top and scalloped bracing within such a budget-friendly price range. I can only think of three other guitar brands that have managed to do the same to near-similar effect (Alvarez with their AD30, Fender with their CD60S, and Washburn with their WD10S). I ended up purchasing an FG820L online about two months ago as my first official guitar and so far it's been a blast conditioning my fingers on that baby! Soon as I get 'em to where I'm ready to tackle fingerpicking and more advanced chord structuring, I'm getting it upgraded with a Tusq nut/saddle/bridge pin package as well as having the action lowered to make full use of those upgrades. Great review, by the way! These are the kind of guitars that once people buy 'em, they end up falling in love with 'em for good...
    ;-)

I have had my FG830 for about 9 months ( I am a beginner, soon to turn 66). This is a great introductory level guitar (still some guitar friends rib me about "soon you may be able to afford a real guitar" (these are Gibson and Martin players). This does not bother me so much as I have found that association with other players is the best way to keep improving, so I grin and bear the bashing. OK my tender fingers did not really like the action on the FG, I had it lightened and some thinner strings (really they are steel cables, not strings) This really improved the "playability'. With these changes it seems for some reason I get pretty strong "buzzing" when plucking the "A" string, at times, very intermittent. My guitar tech here in Tucson thinks our recent very wet winter is part of the problem. Anytime this buzzing happens I just stop by the shop (it is 5 minutes walking distance from me) He fixes it and I am happy as a clam again (policy for this shop is to provide this kind of service for "regular" customers".) I want to move up in the Yamaha line. I think I pick FG5. My choice is based on my great experience with the FG830 only as I can't find a FG5 locally to play. I am concerned with what I believe is a bit wider neck on the FG5. I keep both as one person in my building (also a beginner) says she will practice with me if she can use the FG830 (currently she plays a 70.00 "Honner" "classic" guitar, not so good). I am 100% certain I find just what I want in the Yamaha line. Some other friends are saying "wait and see if you really like doing this (play acoustic) before upgrading (I am sure I will end up spending 1000.00 or so) I want to experience what it is like playing a better quality instrument and I am not so sure how many playing years I have left in me, better do it now. Thanks.

Dan R your Gibson friends are just jealous because their high dollar Gibson’s won’t stay in tune and as far as your Martin friends they are just guitar snobs lol. Personally if I was going to spend more than $1000 on a guitar it would be a Taylor over a Gibson or Martin any day. My fg800 Yamaha plays and sounds very very similar to a $2000 Taylor with the inexpensive upgrades I made to it😉

Thanks Jarvis for this wonderful review! Great playing as always! I have the electric/cutaway version of this guitar (FGX800C) for about 3 years now and it's really great once you set it up, sounds full especially when you replace the saddle with either bone or tusq! Great value and a total beater! Just a quick question though, would you suggest upgrading the tuners to say a Gotoh 510z (21:1) with magnum lock? I'm a bit torn if it's worth it to upgrade or should I just get a higher end guitar instead haha!

How do you know if the FMI saddle really came from an ancient woolly mammoth? That is my big question. Amazing sound. The Yamaha mid-level guitars are so much better than the low end F310 type guitars. Those sound like garbage, and don't get me started on the C40...
