In this video, we’re going to talk about stevia and the problem with stevia.
It’s very important to read the labels on the things you buy. Just because something might be keto-friendly does not mean it’s healthy. That can be the case with stevia on keto.
The problems with some brands of stevia sweetener:
• Stevia in the Raw-Maltodextrin (the highest type of sweetener on the glycemic index)
• Sweet Leaf-Inulin (can create bloating)
• Better Stevia-Organic cane alcohol
• Pyure Stevia-Organic stevia and natural flavors (Likely GMO ingredients)
What stevia is best?
For the most part, if you can get stevia by itself, it’s going to be ok. Ideally, it would be great if you get the stevia that’s green and not white, which has a lot of unneeded chemicals.

This just happened to me the other day. I was at the store and picked up a stevia off the shelf, read the ingredients, had maltodextrin, and put it back on the shelf. I’m so sick of the evil food industry playing with our food products!
That's why I tend to NOT buy them, especially from the big food companies. I saw an undercover video several years ago that showed the bigwigs of one of those companies, bragging about using chemical concoctions in their food products to cause addiction to their specific brands. As the chemicals are not required to be listed or disclosed, they use them in almost all of their food products to enhance their bottom line. Our FDA is NOT for our best interests at all!!
Vickie Turner its all about money. Lookup “sugar industry paid harvard researchers $50,000 in the 1960’s”. Then check where the harvard researchers went to work and what they did to the food pyramid in the 1970’s.
The best formula- Don’t eat whatever tastes sweet.
Happened to me except for the part about reading the ingredients right in the store. I got it home before I saw the maltodextrin in. Right into thetrash.
Tinna Eat whole fruits. They don’t increase blood sugar. But remember counting daily calories. It would be good if you replace one part of your daily meal with mixed fruits and yogurt.
This just spiked my anxiety. No product is ever clean or safe to eat. I’m so tired of researching every single food only to discover to no surprise that it’s also not ‘always’ safe to eat. Can’t food companies just leave things as they are!!
They can but they won't. Huge profits are made by people getting sick slowly by diabetes and/or hypertension leading to cardiovascular illnesses
@@deepesh1995
Why would food industry intentionally makes people sick?
It's not like they will profit off of it.
To leave things as they are would actually be worse tho.

Please keep doing what you doing Dr. Berg, we need more humans like you. You have all the videos I would need to have the right diet for diabetes.
At this point of my life I don't know what to eat. Even the air I breath is bad, I think eventually we all are going to either starv to death, or eat till we die.
Spot on, Brother! We all need to Brace Ourselves!!
I believe people should stop trying to become only engineers, and pay more attention to stuff like nutrition. If more people are properly educated in it, then society as a whole would get more knowledge on the matter through their research.
Guys, we ARE society. I think Sadhguru & Wendell Berry & our kids are right. We have to heal the water, wildlife, trees & soul, & speak up for the planet's life, not obsess about our own self preservation. If you get 20 or 30 or 10 more years, give it to these others. That's called joy.
Sadly their are evil doers on this planet that want nothing more than to eliminate as many humans from the face of this earth as possible and they use whatever means possible to fulfill this goal, we are at war on many fronts and this all goes back thousands of years and while most people choose to ignore this or pretend that the illusion their living in is real thinking, nah, no one would do this and why would they, it's a big story and hard to cover it here and it takes years to even start to fully grasp or wrap ones head around these concepts. the rabbit hole goes deep and it literally has it's tentacles in every aspect of humanity.
Just to name a few items below, your own due diligence is required to start to fully understand all this, never take anyone's word for anything not even mine, truth can not be told, it can only be learned and this is no easy task and like it or not, it's going to be up to you. their are countless people who can help shed some light and point you in this direction, but no one can or should convince you of anything, truth is your responsibility, question everything and demand answer.,
There is no easy way around this, but we are indeed at war, this war is between light and dark forces the likes of which will and can rattle the brain.
Always remember this one thing, if what we think we know is a Drop, then what we don;t know becomes an Ocean, we don;t know what we don;t know.

Best way to use stevia is to grow it yourself. I did for the first time this year and it’s so easy! The plant is hardy in most zones. I’m in zone 8. I make cuttings from my two plants about once every couple weeks, dehydrate them and then coarsely grind the leaves to steep in my coffee and tea. Yesterday I cooked it into keto pancakes. So good!
Does it leave that bitter after taste? And do find the sweetness satisfactory? Just wanted to know...

Dr. Berg should receive a metal from utube for helping millions of people! He is extraordinary. He educates us with powerful knowledge and I sure wish I had known this when I was young. Although I will say at 58 years I am on Q like Dr. Berg. It's awesome to feel good through the entire day, every day. With ZERO sugar
I just began following Dr. Berg and am training myself to go keto, beginning with intermittent fasting and decreasing my carbs especially bread. I was subscribed to a few keto channels to learn more, but you are correct this Doctor knows his stuff from a biochemical point of view and when the other channels contradicted his points, I dropped them like hot cakes. After tasting grass fed butter which he recommended I was delighted to remember the taste of butter from my childhood!
Stevia in the Raw is 97% Dextrose. I called them to see and I was shocked. I told the girl they should change the name to Sugar with just a hint of Stevia.
Dextrose is just glucose. Y'know, that molecule your body uses for energy.
@@schmingusss My point was 97% of the Stevia was sugar/dextrose. It's all the same which spikes blood sugar and insulin which is what many of us are trying to avoid.

I've decided to question the entire premise: Do I even need sweetness to have a satisfying, enjoyable diet? Turns out I don't. No Keto desserts, no artificial sweeteners. Some fruit, but far less often than I used to. I've never been happier with my diet, I've never enjoyed the taste of my food more. Not only do I not need sweetness, sweetness gets in the way. I wouldn't believe it if I hadn't actually done it.
Same for me
29 years of avoiding vegetables, and since I've gone keto these last 4 months, veggies of all kinds are my favorite part of the meal! Sugar and sweetness absolutely ruined my taste buds... everything I once hated now tastes great! Even sardines!
Yea.. i don't like desserts at all... Even when I was not following keto
@@Shibby7634 It's as if sugar hijacks our enjoyment of many foods. In a way both methods push you to eat what makes you feel good. With sugar, you feel good while eating it and for about 5 minutes, then you feel worse than before. Without sugar, you feel good all day long and there isn't any drop off.
Soo....you question stevia....but not keto? Lol
Yes! I have long pointed out to friends that label reading is just as important with stevia [products] as it is with anything else. Thanks for the video.

I'm growing a pot of stevia. It's a beautiful plant I overwintered and now it's huge! Easy to dry out, use fresh or dried.

You would need doctor Berg's advice and then you would have only a few items on just one shelf... almost everything has a hidden poison right now 🙃
@@paolac.1678 Then it would be a store for people who want to make food from scratch. A few things with nothing added in them is fine. That's what people want.
Even in organic foods quemicals are added to preserve the product, so they are not 100% organic, foods would rot in days if it’s not preserve specially if it’s organic strait from the plant, the best bet it’s to pray over the food you eat,
Thank you Dr. Berg! Now those words on the box make sense and I will be looking out for them before buying. Best wishes!
Wow, I just bought some "Stevia in the raw" thinking that I was embarking on a healthy direction. Guess I need to check the ingredients better. Thanks Doc, for the heads up. Glad I learned this now before I started using it more. I'd rather waste a few dollars on the front end than in the clinic later on. Guess I'll be planting Stevia to make sure i get the real deal.
What was the ingredients you found on your stevia bottle?
One simple test is to check the amount of "product" that it takes to adequately sweeten say a cup of coffee. If it's just a little sprinkle, then it's likely pure stevia.
Hi Dr. Berg, I enjoy your medical informative videos loaded with gems of wisdom that have made my job as a Pharmacist much easier; conveying your pearls of knowledge to my customers has helped tremendously with my customers' health and well-being. Kudos to your stellar character and integrity for digging deep to share the truth and your treasures with everyone with no fluff. I do have a question. What do you think of stevia already mixed in vanilla yogurt?
Thank you for this, Dr Berg. My mother is going through pancreatic cancer with a non-alcoholic cirrhosis of the liver. I am overhauling her diet and she now has a desire to change and I am so thankful. I am trying to do everything the best I can after watching your videos for 4 years now. I am providing all organic food to her when I am with her, though I have no control over what happens when she is in other family members' care. She of course knows none of this so I want to provide her with the purest food possible. There is only so much I can do, as she is completely in a conventional medicine world. She started her first chemo treatment yesterday and is determined to get the Whipple Procedure surgery after the chemo, all of which is scary to me. I can help with her diet overhaul, and she has been a trooper about that. Your videos are so very helpful. Though I have been doing everything you say for over 3 years now, it still is a lot of information to keep up with and remember when every detail is critical.

Green Stevia Leaves. All you need in the ingredients list.
You can buy it in bulk.
I have my own and love it.
And how does it taste? I want to try it but I don't particularly like the taste of liquid stevia, so I'm afraid green leaves would be even worse...
saturnight. Truthfully, the taste is still there. What helps is adding keto friendly sweeteners to dissipate the aftertaste. Sweet spices like ginger, cinnamon and nutmeg help. I haven’t experimented with teas yet, but I surmise that would help, too. Adding a couple of low sugar berries helps as well.

I started looking at keto cooking and bought the "Stevia in the Raw" as an ingredient. Then I saw the maltodextrin in the ingredient list. I used up the bag, but now I look closer at ALL "KETO" pre-processed items. Many of them claim to be keto or keto-friendly but they are only slightly lower in carb/sugar content. I found cauliflower pasta, but it was only 30% cauliflower, the rest was normal wheat. same with cauliflower pizza crusts. You will also see maltodextrin in Splenda. Just have to remember - read the whole list of ingredients before buying, and not just the name on the front. So far, Swerve and monkfruit seem to work the best.
Maltodextrin is the new corn syrup. Everybody is hip to what corn syrup does to us and we quit using it so the big food companies come up with a new poison corn product maltodextrin.

Stevia is so easy to grow, folks. Even if you don't have outdoor space, a simple little hydroponic setup in an 18gal tote or something is enough to get a fair yield. And actually, you could grow it continuously, year-round that way. Just hang it upside down to dry if you don't have a dehydrator. A coffee grinder or even a blender will work to get it into a powder, but inexpensive spice grinders are out there. It doesn't have to be complicated, labor intensive or costly. Wow we've been wrong about stevia all this time. Thank you Dr.Berg for this very informative video ❤❤❤
Wrong in what way?
There’s nothing wrong with stevia, just some of the crap that’s mixed with it in some products.
I’ve made my own stevia tincture (Bulk powder/80 proof) a few times. So far the best one I made was a 50/50 mix but either way the stevia tincture was still only about half as sweet as table sugar or honey. I use about 2 dropperfuls in a cup of coffee. Strangely, it’s seems there is a threshold of sweetness no matter how many extra dropperfuls I would put in my coffee it still remained about the same.
Can you share the recipe, please?
@@nabanitadash7085 Just put Stevia powder or leaf into a mason jar and fill it with 80 proof vodka. Use half stevia, half vodka. Shake it up and let it sit for about a week. Strain/filter off into a 4 oz dropper bottle and leave the rest in the mason jar for later.
I live in Swiss and the processed Stevia here only contains steviaglycoside and erythritol, so I think it‘s okay, it also stops my sugar craves and keeps my sweet tooth satisfied for a day with just a half tea spoon, but I read that it raises cortisol levels if you eat too much, which causes acne. I will also try out Xylitol which is positive for the skin

Both Erythritol and Xylitol are sugar alcohols used as alternative sweeteners.

Hi Dr. Berg! Could you please do a video on Bochasweet, a sweetener substitute made from kabocha squash extract? It sounds like it may be a promising substitute but I'm not familiar with one of its ingredients, pentose, and its effect on the body. Thanks so much.
True, and I bought ""Monk Fruit" only to see it was actually Erythritol with "Monk Fruit extract". Always read the label!
I drank an orange Zevia today and felt fine afterward. It was good flavor and enjoyable. It is also non gmo.
As far as carbonated drinks go, I really like Spindrift. It is simply carbonated water and fruit juice. No citric acid or any natural flavors.
I've tried stevia, personally, I find it vile. I gave up sugar in my coffee...it was tough, but no sweetener is better than bad sweetener.
I used a packet of Stevia, about the size you’d expect to put in a cup of tea and within a half hour it made my heart “race”! I almost went to the hospital. I haven’t tried it since...
I dried my own stevia herb and was adding it to my loose teas when I brew. And every time, stevia triggered my sugar cravings, and cravings in general. So it’s a no-no for me, even in its purest form. 🤷🏻♀️
Good point. You are right.
That craving is a good sign of reduced GI.
This was eye-opening! Thank you, kindly.
You're welcome!
Great job buddy!
I think it's important to make the distinction that mass produced products are often tampered with.
I grow and dry stevia leaves then pulverized them in a coffee grinder and store them in a spice jar. This has been the best method in my opinion. I place the leaves on a baking sheet and dehydrated at 200°F
To use it in coffee I put the ground leaves in the filter with the grounds and brew. I find this removes the bitter aftertaste of stevia and sweetens the coffee. My daily 120cal coffee in the morning is now only 20 cals because of the creamer.
You can also put ground leaves in baking recipes although I like to make a 'tea' from the leaves with just boiling water and use it as a wet ingredient.
I use the Pyure brand & it's fantastic. It contains Stevia, Erythritol, & Natural Flavors. It's also Organic & Non-GMO, plus it's actually very affordable.
Tastes better than sugar; I highly recommend!
Thanks for sharing your find with us!
The best tasting stevia is the one mixed with *erythritol* which is safe, except if you use a lot and may get a little digestive discomfort but nothing serious. I am happy using the brand *Twin*
Thank you! I looked up maltodextrin- somehow I missed that it's a sweetener... but I don't buy anything that has it listed.
Thank you for everything you do!
I used to have a very sweet tooth, but I just cut out ALL SUGARS and Sweeteners and DON'T miss it at all! !
That’s my goal!
It gets easier as time goes by
Thanks Dr. Eric Berg. I was wondering why I was getting bloated after consuming "Stevia" but know I know why. 🙂👍
This was so insightful!
Thanks I've been buying those zevia sodas and was wondering if it was bad thanks for the clarification
I just bought stevia in liquid. Wow... everywhere is some hidden issues. Thank you, I should check what I bought..
Ah that explains so much. I'm doing a 1 week fast and am on day 7. I was feeling good, stomach is nice and empty, until I had stevia in my coffee and now I'm extremely bloated!! I was so confused why I would bloat from pure stevia. The kind I had was Better Stevia, which says the ingredients is just "Certified Organic Stevia Leaf Extract". How deceiving! How would I know from reading a package that it would have other things that would cause an adverse reaction? Thank you for the information because the manufacturers obviously won't tell us.
This is interesting! I have 3-6 packets of stevia a day with coffee. I'm always bloated. I switched from coffee to tea to see if it helped. It was the same, but I was always using stevia. I'm 36 hours in to a fast right now and the only thing I had was coffee with stevia today. I've used stevia for 3 years now because of intermittent fasting. I've changed my diet substantially and cook all my own food now. But still I'm gassy and bloated, burping, heartburn. Guess I'll know over the next few days.
Growing my own stevia. Thank you for this info!
Thanks for watching!
I use SweetLeaf. The Inulin has never been a problem. The product is non-GMO. Now, I just discovered there is also an organic version, which I will be trying. I put it in my unsweetened ice tea, which I drink instead of carbonated beverages.
I like lemon ice tea, but my favorite brand that has lemon and sugar is 100 calories per 12 ounce glass.
So, instead, I buy unsweetened ice tea (it’s only real brewed tea) and add my own lemon and SweetLeaf Stevia, for 0 calories.
In the late 80s I worked for Sunrider, a health food company where I cooked stevia liquid in a 40 gal vat down to a syrup sold as Trusweet. Make some at home: soak the leaves in water. Strain off liquid and repeat until clear, then cook down to a dark syrup. Raw Stevia leaf is available online, etc.
Hello kindly let me know how's its processed properly for home use..
@@ashokvanrashi Take raw stevia leaves and soak them in water. Change it until the color fades out, boil down slow to a dark, fairly thick syrup, and store in glass bottles.
@@Skinnybobblues Than you for your reply.
The liquid to boil down, is it the clear liquid? The first washed liquid should be thrown out?
I am a constant label reader, as I have had numerous reactions from foods that had a change of ingredients without announcing it on the front label. I now have to constantly check to make sure products have not been modified (obviously, it’s often with cheaper substitutes). If you hear cursing in the food isle, yes even in the “health food store”...it might be me! I am growing more and more frustrated and disgusted by food companies taking wonderful food and wrecking them with added junk!
Same! 🙏
ME, TOO! I buy very few manufactured products. Pure lemon juice is one that I buy, but I still look at the label to ensure that there's nothing else in there!
You r so right ,it is frustrating
"Natural Flavor" can also be used in the US to label MSG (Monosodium Glutamate), a flavor enhancer known to cause it's own problems, and addictions.
Think you Dr Berg for thé info!
Now brand. Liquid stevia. 2 drops in your coffee or lemonade isn’t killing anyone. Sugar is poison.
Now Brand is a family owned company with very high standards. They're products are trustworthy.
@@ceilconstante7813 Or they can keep all the secrets without being exposed
@@BlueSkies360 I've used a lot of their products. I particularly like their Super Enzymes. You can read about them. They have a reputation in the Health industry. I think of they started to use cheaper ingredient it would ruin them. A LOT of Nutrional Companies use Maltodextrine as a filler.
I had worked at a health food store with rigorous standards and Now has always had good standards along w/many others. Also, their consulting Doc is the same guy that wrote, and updates, Prescription for Nutritional Healing along w/his certified nutritionist wife, the Balch's (the health food store bible!). My go to book.
@@peppertree8244 I'm not a "brand guy" but Now is one of very few brands toward which I'll gravitate when in doubt.
Thanks,,,I thought "stevia in the raw" was healthy.
It sounds so healthy.
Next time I'll read the label,,,with a magnifying glass.
Thanks for this video. Trying to cut out sugar and was using Stevia. Now I find out that even Stevia has sugar that I am trying to cut out!
I read a few articles many years ago that Stevia is used in its native country as an anti fertility drug. Since the big push to place Stevia in the food chain some years back, all the references of it on the web have vanished. might be worth looking into.
Good thing I am already 63, buying only organic from now on.
No wonder I read a blog where she used stevia for months and her menstruation stopped when she took stevia. She even got addicted to it.
omg, are you for real? That's bizarre
Some years back the FDA made it ILLEGAL to call Stevia a sweetener. That changed when the big food companies decided they wanted to use it.
Just ordered organic stevia seeds to grow my own. I think the more we grow our own food the better off we will be.
Stevia grows very well, its a type of basil. Very hardy. Had a bunch growing in my balcony and had to throw it out when moving out. Like it just kept growing. Had bought it from Home Depot.
You scared me for a second.
I've been growing it in my herb box so I can make sweet tea strait from my garden. I didn't want to give it up!
I make my own stevia I grow it , harvest the leaves and dry them then blend to a fine powder. I also dry the leaves and keep some chopped to put in my tea balm it is excellent
The name “Stevia“ always makes me think it is not natural… Just seems like a lab creation by some guy name Steve who named it after himself
Makes me think of Stevie Nicks.
It's Steve's gender fluid sibling.
I will always remember this when I read stevia in the ingredients. It's disgusting anyway.
Stevie wonder 😃

I've attempted to do the keto diet multiple times and always ended up quitting because i felt like it wasn't working for me. Now i know its because i've been using stevia in the Raw for many years. Thanks for the info....I just wished you would have done this video sooner.
What is Stevia in the Raw? Is it a US branded product? Or is it raw natural stevia leaves picked off the plant and unprocessed?
@@michaelcabarles stevia in the raw is manufactured in the US, it compromises of stevia leaf extract and dextrose, with the dextrose being a no no for persons doing keto.
good info ty
Well, now. That’s kind of a bummer. Thank you for sharing this information.
Very glad to be of help.
