I'm trying to get my mom, my sister out of Grand Rapids and Michigan, my mom originally from Muskegon and its getting worse there. I've been left Michigan with my Dad in 2001, never looked back. I've always hated Grand Rapids with a passion
When I lived in MI, I loved it that there were less people every year. Although losing your brightest is not good. Now I live in FL and there are way too many people here. The traffic is horrible.
Its like that at all over The South like Atlanta has much worse Traffic than Chicago/ L.A.. Houston, Austin and Dallas is about to be as bad with Traffic and more crimes. Its why I refuse to move to where most people are moving too.
I believe Oakland and Macomb counties didn't want to help pay for transit. So, saving a few dollars in the short term hurts in the short and long and no one else to blame.

Got my Computer Science degree in Michigan in 2013 and I left for China in 2014 where I've had an okay career developing educational technology and teaching programming. There were no good opportunities for me in Michigan. It seemed like no one cared and no one was striving for anything better. I tried meeting the state's people at a start-up incubator opening to show some of the educational technology I was developing. They blew me off and didn't give a damn. The governor was a really nice guy in person though. I told a couple of people there I'd go to China if I didn't see any opportunities in Michigan, and they were like "Sayōnara, then"... which isn't even Chinese... They better state actually caring about talent and not just talking about it! Talk isn't going to get them anywhere and the rest of the world isn't standing still. Diversification of the economy is key. And industries that are not so cyclical like autos and mortgages. Too bad UofM and MSU can't develop more startups. And mass transit is a dirty word in SE MI.
Millennial here. I grew up in MI but moved away about a decade ago. Reasons why? The imposition of a state income tax in the 60s has killed businesses/jobs/only helped grow government way beyond rate of inflation. Also....the most expensive car insurance in the USA (PIP, MCCA), the worst pothole-infested roads (outdated Public Act 1951), rampant union culture which has contributed to the decline of the auto industry, as well as other miscellaneous factors like water/sanitation/quality of life. I live in TN now which isn't perfect, but nevertheless is a huge upgrade from the once "Great" Lakes State. Changing the legislature from full-time to hybrid or part-time would be beneficial IMO.
