This is an underrated comment. With the amount of clothes, food we throw away in this country is crazy. With the housing problem, I don't know why big companies are buying up property with there are citizens trying to save up and buy land. The US can make steps forward towards a solution, but unfortunately we are greedy. Greed and pride will be this country's downfall.
"Can't" is the right word because people must want to change before anyone can help them. Near DC (not sure other parts of USA), janitors make $22 per hour. Guess what! No USA citizens apply to these jobs.

They are trying to make it to doctor's appointments for their health. Many would love to further their education but cannot monetarily afford to do so, or can not afford the time to do so. It is NOT a LACK OF CARE for themselves rather it is simply SURVIVAL.
@@SimpleMandy I totally understand that. They are in a hole. Holes are hard to climb out of but in order to do it. a person has to have a plan and be ready and willing to make the sacrifices needed to make it happen. In most cases, there are addiction problems or mental problems that leads people to reject help. In cases where people have children, there is help, but we don't do any favors by creating a woke society where women are told they don't need men or intact families to raise their kids. It's much easier to avoid putting oneself in a hole than to have to climb out of it but even though we have compulsory education in every crack and corner of America, we don't even teach basic life skills in school. Education has been run by progressives for at least the last fifty years. They spend far too much time on progressive indoctrination and far too little time in preparing people for life. Even when you mention going back to school, that far too often involves spending four or six years trying to get a degree in a useless 'progressive' degree like women's studies or black studies that just makes the person hate the world rather than teaching them how to succeed in the world. There are currently more jobs available than workers. The best education for the poor is just to work and learn a skill or a trade, learn how to start a small business on the side to supplement income that could eventually grow into a very profitable life, and to learn how to invest so that a person's money is working for them even while they sleep. The most important lesson to learn is good habits that keep people out of trouble, hopefully before they get into trouble. In the end, there is no way to save most people who don;t want to save themselves. There are also other unintended consequences that result, both for the people who are supposedly being saved but also for a society that starts losing a standard reward system. When progressive mayors start putting homeless into hotels, many more homeless people show up to be saved. And why wouldn't they if they are also struggling with no plan of how to work their way out of the hole they are in. Once they are in the system, it is no different since they will lose more than they can gain by trying to climb the ladder. But someone has to pay for the growing welfare rolls through higher costs on everything that consumers buy. Who makes up the biggest part of the consumer base? The middle class. That is why the middle class begins to disappear in a Marxist society, along with all the graft and corruption and inefficiencies that occur in government bureaucracies. The point isn't to argue why people shouldn't care. The point is to shift toward what works to lift the poor in a society instead of devolving into a deeper and deeper welfare state where the citizenry gets poorer and weaker and more dependent as the bureaucracy gains all the money and power and control and ownership.

When 3 out of every 4 Americans between the ages of 23 and 40 say that they can't afford to purchase a home, we have a systemic problem on our hands that goes beyond personal responsibility. Hey there! I am an international student from the Czech Republic who has been living in the US for past 11 months. In such a short amount of time I realized how broken the system is. I cannot imagine staying and living here. I am convinced that the power is in hands of a few rich people who pull the strings. And the more rich you are, the less you realize there IS a problem and the easier it is to ignore it. Many people asked me after my exchange program ended: "So, why haven't you ever gone to eat out with us?" or "Have you been to this fabulous (expensive) restaurant yet??" No, I haven't. I have been to Panda Express once, and a handful of times I visited McDonald's when I didn't have time to cook at university dorms. And then they proceed to tell you how disgusting it is to be eating fastfood and I should get some REAL food. Great! Give me 20 000 $ and I am dining with you! :D Take this just as an example of the absurdity. Daily struggles of poor people in the US are undeniably several times worse. You don't have insurance? Too bad, die of (any disease)! But don't forget: "We care about your health!"

Monetary wealth MEANS life wealth. Every time someone present a argument against money the premise is almost always wrong. With money you can spend time with your family, with money you can pay your hospital bills and increase your chance of saving them in a accident, with money you can afford better experiences, luxuries, food, things to deepen a bond, with money you can buy love (doggo). Without money you see family fall apart, divorce, conflict with inheritance, stress, not being able to afford things and having to account for everything you buy month to month so you don’t go over budget. The answer is real simple: they can end it but they won’t. Why they won’t is because they make millions acting like they try. If they fix the issue they lose the money they pocket.
Respectfully disagree. The primary issue is the individuals with the power to enact change are currently not. The video itself says legislation is the most important tool to change poverty in the U.S. Who has control over writing/changing legislation in this country? Even tougher question to answer honestly...who has the power to vote those people out or in but isn't doing so in a way that will change how we approach poverty?
@@veronicalagor4771 So if our legislation is to blame for not passing poverty reduction efforts I think Mad4hats assessment is still valid, why don't they support said bills? Because it would lose them money, personal money, campaign money, and this is both parties. It doesn't seem to matter whom we vote in because as long as our democracy is ran by two parties it will be business as usual. The only people who run with an aim to addressing the roots of poverty almost never win a seat in congress, and even when they do they are vastly outnumbered by business interested politicians, and made innefectual. If we are really hoping we can vote our way to reform by electing the candidates chosen for us by the Major two parties, we are being delusional. We would need a new party with sweeping political influence, and that's just not going to happen with the chokehold of political dollars the Dems and GOP hold over these contests participation.
@@JTheTeach The idea that everything reduces to this idea of "they" not wanting to fix problems because it would lose "them" money is pretty shortsighted and frankly ahistorical. Unfortunately, the truth is that the actual answer to the problem is far more boring than you or anyone else has any real interest in discussing. Voters are extremely divided, so Congress is extremely divided. This dooms federal legislation to address poverty (which imo is what needs to be done). At the state and local levels, the wealthy (even the dems) are not willing to make sacrifices to address poverty, and frankly many states are too poor to even fund their own programs to do so. Poverty is something every dem voter pontificates about, but none are willing to actually solve if it means a reduction in their property values, school funding, or anything else they care about. Candidates are chosen by voters. Wealthy voters vote more and advocate for their interests more. They have more time and resources to play the game. The politics in this country are not ran by big businesses, and there's not even an argument you can make for that unless the legislation directly impacts their businesses (ie taxes and regulations). In fact, businesses would love it if poverty were reduced because poor folks HAVE to spend their money. They do not sit in massive wads of cash. They spend. The real question is whether increased spending for poor folks accompanies an increase in the tax burden on big businesses, and this is where the question gets far more complex. However, these two things do not always have to go together, and state governments are a great example of that, considering how many of them have literally no income tax.
Seems to me that there is a definite effort on the part of some in power to maintain a permanent poor underclass in this country. But rather than admit that, they're going to do everything they can to pin it on the individual.
Does the individual bare any responsibility? We have the right to work and do whatever we want, and that includes the right to make poor decisions. We also have the right to expect government officials to fix problems, and when they don't (or can't), we say they aren't "doing enough." When they try, we complain about "Big Government." When does our own accountability and responsibility come into play?
I'm currently on disability and I was homeless at one point while waiting for it to be approved. Things are rough out there and poverty really, really hurts. If you aren't born into wealth in this country, you are one health issue or one bad situation away from living on the streets. The wages are still so low that even full time workers live paycheck to paycheck and are never truly able to build wealth themselves. Everything about our system feels helpless, like you are perpetually swimming upstream. It doesn't have to be like this - we see so many examples of other countries taking better care of their citizens and it works well when done right. Things simply can't go on like this. Most of our biggest issues we face today can be traced back to poverty. Hell, crime itself is linked to poverty. All of this should be a no-brainer - we need to take care of our people so that we can continue to thrive as a country. What's it going to take? Another depression? Congressmen dying off? The U.S. economy's natural state is surprisingly bleak. In a desperate bid to grow, it resorts to erratic measures, employing tricks, gimmicks, and policy tweaks to stimulate expansion. While these tactics offer fleeting relief, they ultimately fail to address the underlying decline, exacerbated by inflation, leaving us with a false sense of progress.

The problem with poverty is that, as this video shows, we are focused on how to afford to pay for poverty rather than solving the root cause in order to eliminate (or reduce) poverty. Why not focus on some of poverty's causes ... i.e. lack of work, jobs, and family dynamics limiting employment, education, opportunity, and motivation. Throwing more money at it doesn't solve it, you must address the cause.
Social justice and equity or equality of outcome are the lies the communist and socialist promise everyone to gain power and control for themselves and the state. They aren't interested in real answers
100% I was lucky and moved from my area of the UK (high poverty, not much opportunity) to a different one for a software engineering apprenticeship. I got paid to learn, did not require any degree or education beforehand and I was able to afford to rent a room. I have since completed my apprenticeship and now earn double the amount I was hired on and have so much room for growth. Had I stayed in my home region I'd have been trapped in the same cycles despite all the talent and potential I had to offer.
In 1963 I made about $75 a week. Couldn't really afford to move out of my parents' home, which was completely abusive and unlivable. Didn't apply for jobs I might have liked because I would not have made enough to get away from my profoundly dysfunctional family. But, I didn't not have crippling debt from going to college. Rents for apartments were about $75/month. These figures are unrealistic for 2023.
My Dad made 400 bucks a week Take Home pay in 1975 raised 7 kids, bought a house and Ma stayed at home. Today that 400 bucks is worth $2200 bucks, take home pay. He was an electrician working for a rubber plant. It's not people living above their means it's the people at the top taking too much in profits. It's pay not keeping up with inflation.
Did you not take into account that there is far more technicians today than there was then and saturation of technicians working has outpaced the demand for them thus lowering their wages? Same thing happened after WW2 when women entered the workforce almost doubling the amount of available labor, it results in wages decreasing.
@J electricians are not suffering. Technicians in high tech are, but overall, all middle income workers are suffering high inflation. Rich people weather the storm easily.
@@j01150126 Any field of work that has too many workers in it will suffer lower wages. That is basic supply and demand, when the supply outpaces the demand for it. The purchasing power of the dollar and our savings accounts keeps diminishing with each new dollar the politicians decide to print out of thin air which devalues the existing money supply.
Most of it goes for jobs. Jobs for warriors, jobs for building equipment, jobs to make goods and supplies, jobs, jobs, jobs. And the people doing these millions of jobs spend the money to live and buy goods. It's not like the money is packed in bales and shot into the sun.
You can just drive around and see how prevalent it is. Rural areas are very often overlooked. Just get off the interstate in “flyover country” and you’ll see what I mean.
It's all about money management especially the location you're in. I've never worried about money haven't worked in 2 years and have free healthcare for life.
Dude, this is the U.S. you can see it everywhere. Homeless people everywhere you look, ghetto poor neighborhoods not too far from rich affluent ones. America = Money💵 over people.
America needs to improve our education system and our mental health system including drug and alcohol addiction. So many homeless people are mentally ill and/or suffer from substance abuse. We don't do a good job of helping or providing support.
I'm not kidding when I say that the market crash and high inflation have me really stressed out and worried about retirement. I've been in the red for a while now and although people say these crisis has it perks, I'm losing my mind but I get it,Investing is a long-term game, so I will focus on the long run.
I can't focus on the long run when I should be retiring in 3years, you see l've got good companies in my portfolio and a good amount invested, but my profit has been stalling, does it mean this recession/unstable market doesn't provide any calculated risk opportunities to make profit?
The reason why United States can't get out of poverty is fue to fact that we are so busy other countries and I people atre home, starving, rental crisis. Come on support our own first.
This is honestly why as a 30 year old American the best bet would be to live overseas somewhere that doesn’t try to take everything I make from me because than I can take American currency to a place where it’s actually worth it. Whereas here I’m barely getting by. American income in Buenos Aires, Bangkok, Manila 🔥
They literally could have asked any poor person what the situation is and they’d get there answer. But nope they’re all hiding behind their fancy desks asking themselves “why can’t we fix this” instead of solving anything.
No one will ever solve poverty, because every society has its share of total screw ups who will never be able to fend for themselves. Societies that only contain capable and motivated people simply do not exist. The left-wing stupidity of the type loved by this channel says "hey, let's punish all the capable people because there's others who are total screw ups. Let's make everyone poor." You do not improve the lives of poor people by making more people poor.
Truth is they don’t want to fix it. How we got Billions for a war in Ukraine but can’t help the people homeless in our own country. This country is ass backwards
“I spend money inefficiently because that’s what the people around me do” There are people aren’t well off and paycheck to paycheck because they got super screwed. That’s not most people. You actually dig in to it and they go out to drink, or smoke or have any number of other bad habits. Buying food out etc Being poor is like being a crab in a bucket. Nobody around you wants to tell you to slow down for a sec save some before you buy your car now that you make 17/hr instead of 13. People are in such a rush to not be poor they stay there.
@@eric4946 Human psychology isn't that logical. When people are suffering and have enough resources for an immediate amelioration of that suffering (drinking, smoking, dining out as you say) they'll take it. They don't believe in a way out. Orwell noted this in his Road to Wigan Pier on the poor financial and dietary preference of the working poor, it's also been noted by economists who constructed the perfect diet for people in developing countries who could actually afford sufficient nutrition and calories but refused to follow it. Frankly the same thing is true of much of the middle class, most people would rather by a 5 series BMW on finance then invest. You're theoretically right, and in practice wrong. People just won't make those choices and never have.
Greedy grocery stores with food prices skyrocketing; landlords with high rents over $1,000 for apartments because of short supply of affordable rental units and overabundance of luxury apartments; homes costing over $1million because of the short supply in new home building. Poverty is definitely a money making venture for the government and investors preying on the $15/hour paycheque earners.
One of the reasons why America will never end poverty in this country because it’s non-profitable and they won’t make any money from it. point-blank. It’s always been about money.
Poverty became a problem because of 40 years of trickle-down economics. When a small group of people have all the money, it causes these issues. Yet, as evidenced by the 2024 election results, Americans think transferring wealth up the affluence ladder is the best way to run an economy. Expect the number of Americans in poverty to significantly increase in the next 4 years. The wealthy make the rules and will continue to squeeze us until we have nothing left.
Excellent. You hit real issues right on the nose. I had to retire because of an accident but now if I worked part time for cash you are penalized right out of any security such as health care.
It's not that the US can't. It's that the US chooses not to end poverty. The 1% in secret satan-worshipping societies who control the world want poverty. It's part of their plan to keep themselves rich.
My mom had similar back in the late 80s. She had my brother when I was 21. It was just her alone taking care of him as his dad had a mental illness that he would not take care of, and sometimes would get hospitalized, and she wanted none of that around my brother. My brother was often getting ill so she had to leave work for a few years. She got on assistance but when she went to go back to work, her gap in work made it hard to get a job, and only part time jobs were offered. But if she took those she would lose much of her assistance and make less than if she stayed on assistance. And they counted my income as household income so that made me move out so she wasn't penalized. It can be a tough system to break out of when you want to. She luckily found a place that needed someone full time and liked her past experiences, and didn't care about her gap in work time.

As soon as people started making more money, we saw inflation. The fact that "wage inflation" is seen as a problem that caused general inflation tells you everything you need to know about how our system works.
That's not how things work from a historical perspective. Wages have remained fairly stagnant until recent years where wages have not kept up with inflation, where even things like minimum wage, which hasn't changed in nearly two decades, and were common practices in entry-level professions. "Wage inflation" is more theoretical in terms of its importance, and it has not been given that credence is not an issue without supporting evidence of why we should care about paying people more being an apparent bad thing?

I think the answer is more like "won't" rather than "can't". Rich people want the poor to stay poor. This allows them to enjoy the comforts of being rich. This is why if you look at studies during the pandemic; while tons and tons of people were laid off and thrown into poverty, you have companies like Ferrari, Lamborghini, and luxury car companies netting record profits.

Nonsense. The U.S. is the most charitable country in the world, both domestically and internationally, both through government programs and private donations. By many factors.
In Finland, you have people who live in poverty as well because of various reasons... but they're guaranteed a home and food and electricity by the state. If you are homeless, and go days without eating in Finland, you've really effed up your circumstances for some reason. In USA, people are just left behind if going gets rough. We haven't solved poverty either, but at least we've tried to make it so everyone can have basic necessities. so being poor in finland and being poor in USA are two completely different things.
They aren’t in poverty for no reason. Finland is one of the most homogeneous populations in the world. We can compare what happens when its not, without going to USA. Sweden used to be like that but they messed up. Now look at it.

We win the most olympic gold medals. We have the most cultural influence. We start most of the trends, sports, fashion, music genres. A big reason is because we nuture and reward talent and ambition, while many europeans see displays of talent as showing off. @Victor Coster 'developed' nations that are responsible for next to no medical innovation, technological innovation, and with socialistic governments. They also have populations that pale in comparison to the US. That's also not mentioning that the US is almost entirely responsible for global peace, dedicating 2.5% GDP to NATO, whereas other countries only donate half their agreed percentage, which happens to be only a hundredth of what the US gives due to our much larger GDP. Until we stop securing those countries safety, and figure out our countries' hundreds of billions of dollars of debt, no. It *can't* be fixed. Sure, take that 1%, they'll simply outsource to other countries, and then we'll be left with absolutely nothing to stand on.

I can understand how having to manage your own affairs as an adult can be challenging if it's always been done for you before.... There is no free ride. The young healthy person who takes care of themselves and rarely goes to the doctor is now subsidizing the fat schlub who smokes and drinks excessively and has all types of medical issues. Because in the USA healthcare is a profit seeking business at every level. It’s also an inelastic good which means you will bankrupt yourself and your family to stay alive meaning they can charge anything and you will pay it or you will die. 65,000 Americans do just that EVERY SINGLE YEAR. 85 million Americans are uninsured or underinsured and can’t use the health insurance they have. My recent 5 minute ambulance ride $1200 AFTER INSURANCE. If you have to take an air ambulance you will be charged $30,000 to $600,000 AFTER INSURANCE by a profit seeking private equity company, they basically own all the air ambulances. private equity companies are also buying up all the dentists and small medical businesses so they can squeeze more labor out of the medical professionals and demand more money from patients and give them less but more expensive care. $90,000 for the three month Hepatitis C medication. Smart and wealthy enough Americans are fleeing the USA to more civilized countries. We can’t afford to die in the USA. I think a lot of the problem is the decline in manufacturing work. Manufacturing jobs used to provide work in the $20 - $40/HR range plus health care. NYC until the 80's had a lot of manufacturing and textile work. The evisceration of manufacturing has eliminated a giant chunk of the work that families decades ago used to rely on to stabilize their economic situation. A health society really needs lots of jobs in that middle step of the income ladder .
factories in my city closed cause they couldnt find enough employees despite 7000 people a year for 25 years moving here. there are new restaurants opening on every corner though. americans just want to serve food or hand food through windows. they dont want to do $40 an hour labor jobs. and they dont want to pay $20,000 for a tv either
You're right, but the solution isn't bringing back manufacturing, it's finding jobs for these people that are equally suitable. Manufacturing is a sinking ship and we'll just get outcompeted by countries who have automated it better.
Nope. Middle class work shifted to computer scientists and engineers typing away at their computers in silicone Valley. The new middle class makes on average 90k per year. If kids don't want to go to university and learn math...that's on them. I own two homes myself.

Funny how most illegal aliens have beautiful custom homes built driving around brand new trucks and cars while the American pays for their health insurance housing our food kids college it’s sickening
There isn't one reason why this is happening. The United States peaked out economically in 1972. That was the last time you could skip college, get a job, be able to afford a stand alone home with a 1 or 2 car garage, have a decent quality of life, not have your spouse work and not put in overtime, second jobs, etc. Those days are long gone. Since then, technology, globalization, improved logistics and business practices make offshoring not only practical, but necessary. I still cannot figure out why someone would pay an American college graduate UD$20,000/month for knowing coding? You can pay a Chinese or Vietnamese programmer a fifth of that amount and get similar results. Why would you pay an American factory worker US$20/hr. when you can pay someone in Vietnam less than $500/month? I am not saying that is right, I am just saying that this option did not exist in America during the 1940s, 50s, 60s and 70s. It exists now, so of course you have to take it as a businessman, or else you will go out of business. I don't know the answer to this problem, but I do know that wishing for the old times isn't it.
In Canada is a similar situation when it comes to business. Canada has a lot of free trade agreements, not sure if more than USA but less than Mexico. Canada leans more into service sector than manufacturing but it is not inexistent. Canada is trying to be less reliant on USA for trade for growth. We have oil in Alberta and potash in Saskatchewan. Fashion in Quebec. Film industry mainly in British Columbia. We have poverty but due to alcoholism, drugs, or lazy to work or put the effort.
In America most places require a car in-order to access employment, education, food, healthcare and housing. Cars can be extremely expensive and alternative modes of transportation can be a combination of unsafe and unreliable ( All the money was spent subsidizing cars). Ending car dependency is one of the biggest things America can do to eliminate poverty.
Go be a trucker a company will let you drive their truck while you get paid for driving. I don't even spend money on gas for my car anymore hardly at all because I only drive it when I come back for home time lol.
This is so true but it's never going to happen, unfortunately. Big Auto is in bed with the government. Plus most Americans (especially Conservative Republicans) do not want public transportation. I used to ride the bus and yes, it's not safe. Many homeless, drug addicts, ex-cons, and mentally ill people ride it. That's not the case in Europe, for example, where most of the normal population rides it.
Why are you looking at cars? Why not housing? Everyone needs housing and that is the BIGGEST COST TO PEOPLE!!!! Eliminating someone's car will eliminate their lifeline!! Cheap reliable cars can be found and not everyone needs to drive around in a $50k car!!!!

I am grateful that the lady talked about loosing benefits if you suddenly make over the limits which are set low. The disabled and not always able to work full time and can only work part time in some situations hoping to improve their lives. The income limits are so low that the disabled are not able to live on the social programs or on their income alone. Even combined the income is not enough in many cases. This needs to be approached differently than the people who are able to work full time. The safety nets for everyone need to stay in place until they are able to be stable enough to stand on their own. So many people are concerned about fraud in this area, but the hoops to go through to get help are difficult limiting the amount of fraud.
There's also an issue with people clustering in a city instead of moving out to places where cost of living is much lower. People need to spread out and develop smaller towns. Your dollar goes further and if people participate it turns into a city one day.
This is what happens when minimum wage is stagnant but cost of living continues to go up and decent paying jobs increasingly become more and more skill-based which requires education and/or training - both of which are neither free nor cheap. Oh, well
I haven't met a single person who makes $7.25 in several years. Living in a small Midwest city, $14-17/hr is standard for even entry jobs. The market responds where government falls short
yes, government influence in the economy has created ripples. costs of labor being artificially set too high/low I know in CA theres so many taxes and fees that everything adds to cost of business.
A rise in the minimum wage doesn't imply in a higher purchasing power, and it damage poor people because it gets harder to access the labour market and find a job.
Cost of living is not up, and the economy is at its best at the moment and Americans are happy. At least that's the official position of the current administration in the white house. There are two additional critical points that were not mentioned, 1) Actual quality job opportunities, and 2) education outside of higher education like Collage and University. The lack of broad manufacturing in the US as was pre 80's and the lack of quality and broad trade schools and apprenticeships to support that has caused a huge void in the labor market. One point they didn't spend enough time on is the lack of mental health facilities and help for people. Traveling to the US from Europe I am constantly struck by how many mentally ill people are living on the streets. You NEVER saw this in the 70's. Not at this level...
@@michael-hw1uv The USA has no left only right wing in politics. I digress however as it's all political theatre to begin with. Thomas Sowell is a fascist, preaching mendacious propaganda. He is quite a good orator, however that doesn't infer what he alleges is accurate. Reminiscent of a certain someone from ancient Carthage. Leftist individuals exist in the USA. However the left as it would be known the world over ceased decades ago in the USA. The USA is a merger of state and corporations. It's a rogue failed terrorist proto-fascist state.
Because we had institutionalized them in the seventies and earlier. Then most mental living facilities/hospitals were dissolved and they were allowed out on the streets.
I personally don’t look at it in the terms of throwing money at the problem. I think if there was a national standard like the lowest pay anyone can receive the lowest possible place to live should at the least be 50% of that monthly total pay. Right now it more like 85% of the average monthly. And God forbid your a single parent. It’s just extremely unfair the way it’s designed
Piety is expensive. Claims of poverty are really just piety, broadcast by vain white liberal saviors (socialists, Democrats) who get filthy rich by claiming to represent the poor and inferior.
When the minimum wage is raised to $15 an hour, businesses then have to raise prices for goods and services to pay for those wage increases which defeats the purpose of raising the wages since it results in everything now costing more.
@@KLondike5 Employers are legally allowed to pay their wait staff those low hourly wages because of the money they make in tips, and some wait staff actually prefer it because they make more than they would have with hourly wages. If you tip at restaurants then you are contributing to this low hourly wage system. I don't tip, and I don't believe in that outdated system. Japan has the right idea when it comes to this. I also don't believe in minimum wage, because no one is forcing anyone to accept these wages for their labor. You determine how much your labor is worth and it's up to you to negotiate with an employer to find out how much they value your labor. If you don't like what they offer you are free to walk away.
Most likely, an outside factor caused this recession. The US dollar's influence as a government reserve currency is waning for the first time in decades. The American Dream has turned into a veritable nightmare for a growing number of people. Poverty is the result of a ruthless, slf-centered society lacking any empathy for the unfortunate. Solidarity is unknown.
The wealthy will tell you that poverty is necessary, and they are correct. If everyone got a fair slice of the pie, the wealthy couldn't take slices larger than everyone else. In order for someone to have a larger slice, someone else has to have a smaller slice. As long as the wealthy own the government, poverty will never go away.

Things will balance out in the long run ... just not in our lifetimes. Lower births means smaller population. Smaller populations means less demand for housing and smaller labor pool. Housing prices will decline and salaries will increase. Just wait a solid 100-200 years haha.
I can't believe the huge opioid addiction problem is completely ignored. 😳 That alone has caused thousands of families to fall into generational poverty.
There are millions of drug addicts in the US, and that is the single biggest cause of homelessness, crime and poverty. More than 100,000 people die in the US every year just from the direct results of drug overdose, let alone it being the root of the majority of crime. Left wing politics is about tolerating and even glorifying drug dependence, allowing the conditions for homelessness, crime and poverty to flourish, and then brainwashing the population into thinking that capitalism is the cause of their problems.
Underlying mental-health and substance-abuse issues are *very important factors* behind why most people are in poverty and experiencing homelessness. Compelling them to accept help from social services would go a long way toward addressing this serious problem. The remainder who are not so afflicted can relocate to regions where there is a tight labor market *and* a lower cost of living.
There are probably fewer than 100 giant factory labs in the world pumping out the majority of the drugs circulating. Our trillions of dollars are used to drone strike goat lovers in backwards countries instead of drone striking a fentanyl factory in secret.

People that have never been poor dont realize it is hell living in poverty every day. It is almost impossible to escape.

Getting to the upper class is not the goal. Being able to live in a stable environment until I die with the people I love is. Material wealth and life wealth cannot compare.
America is currently plagued by the hydra-headed evil duo of inflation and recession. The worst part about this recession is that consumers are racking up credit card debt. In April alone, credit card debt went up 20% while rates have doubled in a year. Inflation is so high that consumers are literally taking debt for basic life necessities. Collapse has indeed begun..

I’m still pretty sure that the U.S. is the lesser of two evils, though.
To me as an european, its always shocking how US is the "top", yet they suffer from such things. Quite a harsh irony, isnt it?
The answer is real simple: they can end it but they won’t. Why they won’t is because they make millions acting like they try. If they fix the issue they lose the money they pocket.
Spot on, it’s profitable for a lot of people to make sure poor people stay poor
You are exactly right!
Seems to me that there is a definite effort on the part of some in power to maintain a permanent poor underclass in this country. But rather than admit that, they're going to do everything they can to pin it on the individual.
You think?
That is exactly what is happening.

Does the individual bare any responsibility? We have the right to work and do whatever we want, and that includes the right to make poor decisions. When does our own accountability and responsibility come into play?

After I moved to U.S. I had to get familiar with how the private medicare worked. I couldn't just go to any doctor or facility and get the care I would need without understanding your own level of coverage. It was stressful to have to check for coverage and then to analyze all the bills I would get and to call around and chase people for any discrepancies. Where I came from I never had to worry about such thing as the doctor's office would bill the government and I would never see a single bill from them.
I ran into the same issue when i first moved to the US, this country is going downhill pretty quick.

There is no free ride. People who have ",free" medical care are paying for it with huge taxes. The young healthy person who takes care of themselves and rarely goes to the doctor is now subsidizing the fat schlub who smokes and drinks excessively and has all types of medical issues. You also inevitably must ration health care, because there is no such thing as unlimited medical resources. People in Canada must wait months if not years to get procedures done.
The US definitely needs a better health care system, but single payor is not the way to go.
Most healthcare insurances are useless anyway. I have to pay up front $1500 deductible before any benefit kick in, and plus the $35 copay every physician visit.

I know several people that don't have cars they work and get wherever they need to

I am grateful that the lady talked about loosing benefits if you suddenly make over the limits which are set low. $15 an hour used to be a good wage until inflation skyrocketed
When the minimum wage is raised to $15 an hour, businesses then have to raise prices for goods and services to pay for those wage increases which defeats the purpose of raising the wages since it results in everything now costing more.
