    I feel like I have an opposite experience with watercolor vs gouache. I'm still a beginner in both, but gouache just feels more natural and not like I'm fighting with how the paint works for some reason.
    Those mushrooms would be cute as stickers, though!

    •  6 років тому +1

      It seems like the artists go either one way or the other. I hope that there's an "in-between" because I do want to learn that gouache at some point ><
      Can I sell hand-cut stickers? Is that a thing? :D

    • @syntheid
      @syntheid 6 років тому

      I'm sure with practice you'll figure it out!
      And yeah I've seen people offer hand-cut stickers, for sure. I think it's just more effort than if you have access to a machine. :)

    I have felt the same way about gouache for like a year! I get it out every once in a while because it looks so beautiful, but then working with it is just frustrating. I started using it more like acrylics, but I wasn’t blending enough. Lately, I’ve been using it a little bit more like watercolors with lightening edges, but it definitely doesn’t work that lay for layering. It’s been a lot better the past couple of of weeks though! These mushrooms turned out so beautifully.

      It's one of those tricky mediums that are nothing like any other medium. Thats why I dont like calling it an opaque watercolor. It's misleading >

    I started out painting in gouache. What I like about gouache is You can go from dark to light colors. You mix/make colors the way same way you would with oil and acrylic. In water color you add more water to lighten the color. In gouache you add white to lighten.
    To darken a color you add black.
    What I love about watercolor: - I love the transparency. I love how I can sheer it out with water. I love how I don’t have to premix the colors. I love how I can layer or paint loose.
    What I love about gouache:-- I love the beautiful matte finish. I love the opacity.
    Thank you for your wonderful review.
    I agree. That Arteza Black is not the best. It looks like a dark brown on your paper.

    •  6 років тому

      The matte finish in gouache is what really attracts me to it. I would write poems about black gouache if I knew how xD It's exactly how you've described and because of that I always feel like it's very misleading to call gouache an opaque watercolor.

      Yeah, it really is >< The reason why the Amazon items are more expensive is because I presume they add taxes whenever's necessary.

    Yes, I know exactly what you mean. I LOVE the way gouache looks but painting with it is difficult. I hate how you mix a color and then it dries darker or lighter than it looked initially. Then I can never seem to mix the same color again if I need more. It's fun to experiment with but I haven't had a ton of success yet.

    I feel your pain. I started gouache and watercolor at the same time. A painter I liked used watercolor but touched up their paintings with gouache so I thought I needed both to paint in watercolor. I clash with gouache literally every painting while watercolor came very naturally to me. Sad thing is, I know what's wrong-- it's my blending but I can't figure out a good way to blend gouache that will make both of us happy.
    If it wasn't for the fact that I absolutely love how gouache looks-- and because I'm ridiculously stubborn, I probably would have quit gouache altogether after my first time using on it's own. My painting was chalky, so thick it cracked, and I reactivated so much some of it became mud. I ended up repainting it in watercolor which turned out beautifully and it's still one of my favorite paintings to date.
    At this point, I became so set on getting better at gouache I don't even own watercolors anymore (yes, I am *that* stubborn). If I want a more watercolor-like painting I just water down my gouache with a blending medium and use ox gall when I paint wet on wet.

    Okay, I admit it. I'm too much of a gouache snob to try anything less than artist grade products. For some reason, gouache is the "hot supply to try" right now, but it's something I spent 20 years airbrushing with and kind of burned out on. What's also hot right now is Arteza. They're sending me a new set of supplies, so I'm really interested to try what they've got to offer (I released a review of their Real Brush Pens recently) and hand-off to my high school students, as well. Love this review and especially when you said, "toobie." LOL!! Thank you, always and I hope you are doing great! :)

    •  6 років тому +1

      Toobies for the win!!! If you paint a lot with gouache then these are not for you I think. These are definitely geared more towards beginners, but I can't call them "low quality". These are really good for their price. I'm glad Arteza is sending you more supplies! I love your reviews. I have one more coming as well. One of the reason I started uploading two videos a week was the amount if supplies they sent for review xD

    I hate painting with guache! It's so frustrating! But I love what others can do with it. I just don't get why you wouldn't use acrylics instead of guache...

      Right? Love hate relationship :D And gouache has this finish... this pure perfect matte finish... it's gorgeous! Black gouache is like a hole in the world, a portal to another... okay I will stop now xD

    I have the Holbein 18 Designer set from Amazon in a Mijello airtight(not) palette. I love them. I want to add the Arteza to give me more colors, but maybe just look at Holbein Magenta. I would have a pink color and better for high key triads...I love the velvety result of gouache, and I also have 37 hand made watercolors, and many of them are opaque. I just bought the 12 set of Pelican opaques, because I had been so very intrigued by them. The palette for them is VERY well designed for how they should be used-with a fair amount of water. I am a beginner addicted to trying new paints. I am loving some M Graham watercolors! You inspire me to dream up a subject to paint in Gouache and my hand mades! I even think I would favor a watercolor background with the subject in gouache.... I ramble, but I think if you love/hate gouache, think of what you hate about it and see if adding another medium would help you to enjoy it more. Inks or colored pencils?

      It's called an opaque watercolor because it's these paints have a very similar composition to watercolor, but the ratios of ingredients are different. It's much better to think of it as "acrylic that can be reactivated with water" xD

    These mushrooms are so adorable! I have the same attitude towards gouache, love the look, but I struggle to use them. Watercolor was actually the bane of my art life for a long time but I now find it less intimidating to use than gouache. After seeing this review I'm tempted to try the arteza line. I have a more expensive set of basic mixing colours but I'm always so nervous to waste them that I get discouraged from practising. These look like decent quality with a nice range to work with. 😀

    •  6 років тому

      Hahaha, yes exactly! I don't want to waste my Acryla gouache so I rarely even take it out! Practicing with cheaper version is great in my opinion and these are definitely decent.

  • @Feldi

    I started with watercolours, so I might have an easier time with these.
    but since I want to get into more opaque mediums I thought I might wanna try gouache and got me a dirt cheap set, just to get into it.
    Now that I got a bit used to the habits of gouache, I thought I might wanna try the Arteza set since it seems to be a better quality than what i used until now.
    I'm actually still excited about getting my hands on them ^^

    this is exactly how i feel about gouache. its so pretty but im so used to watercolors and i’d like to get better but this medium is difficult. i started off with the holbein 5 color primary set and it helped but im very limited with colors. this arteza set comes with everyyy color i use in my watercolors so im really interested. your mushrooms are really pretty and i love the colors you chose and the way you blended it.

    •  6 років тому +1

      I feel that limiting my color palette might help me work with it better. It's just because the color mixing is so much different than watercolor xD I used to paint a lot with acrylics, so I was shocked that gouache didn't come easier to me. Until I realized that I always used acrylics in a more watercolor way xD

  • @JenniferCharleeArt
    @JenniferCharleeArt 6 років тому +12

    Yay! I have been interested in these. I have both cheaper and expensive gouache and every time I pick it up again I get frustrated. I always find myself having a hard time finding the right ratio of water or I add too much water. I also have a hard time with layering which is why I've wanted to try acrylic gouache since I sort of want to put in more solid, velvety, backgrounds for my watercolor peices. I think I need to practice more and find more resources to help me along. These mushrooms are lovely btw 💕🖌 ^_^ This would be a beautiful repeatable pattern

    • @JenniferCharleeArt
      @JenniferCharleeArt 6 років тому

      While gouache does rewet, like watercolors, most I've seen will crack when dry which makes them hard to travel with especially. It's best to have gouache in a sealable palette where each color can stay wet (at least that is what i have been trying with my own gouache (not sure if this one is any different).

      I think with gouache it's just mostly practice because I'm having the exact same issues. I've learned already not to add too much water, but it took a while. Calling it a more pigmented/opaque *watercolor* is very misleading to a watercolor artist >

    • @TerrieJohnson731
      @TerrieJohnson731 6 років тому

      If you hate the cracking, I can say that the Holbein does not crack. I have it in a Mijello palette for almost a year and no issues, though I do want to thoroughly rewet it and put out a little fresh, next use. I can spend 2 days spraying and mixing my wells with toothpicks, and bring it back to it's original state and the end result is the same, but I am patient. I want it to dry to an extent to prevent mold. ;-)

  • @celiaakey7944
    @celiaakey7944 6 років тому

    For me it's actually the opposite. Watercolour was my baby for years but I could never get good at it and understand the layering aspect of it. With gouache I can go as translucent or as opaque as I want and if I make a mistake I can go right over it, when I can not in watercolour.

    •  6 років тому

      It's funny how that works, doesn't it? xD We always seem to want something we don't have or can't have, etc. I will keep pining for that gouache even though watercolor just seems to fit me better!

  • @CharleyZark
    @CharleyZark 6 років тому +1

    Some of the paints will be less opaque because of the particular pigment. In any painting medium there are variations in transparency/opacity due to the nature of individual pigments. Titanium White and Cadmium Yellow, for example, are very opaque. Alazarin Crimson, many yellows, and Phthalo colors are examples of transparent pigments - in any medium. Sometimes gouache manufacturers will add an opacifier to those colors, like calcium carbonate or marble dust. There is information here on some of the ingredients in some lines of gouache: gurneyjourney.blogspot.com/2015/06/gouache-ingredients-info-from.html

    •  6 років тому

      Wow, all the information! Thank you so much, I will read it for sure!

    Gouache is very challenging for me as well. I am used to watercolors and I have a lot of trouble with the whole light colors dry darker. I feel like watercolor is a very freeing medium and gouache you have to think a little bit more and plan. At least that's how it is for me. But I am like you I absolutely love the way gouache looks and I hope to master it someday!

    •  6 років тому

      Yeah, watercolor definitely gives more freedom, especially if you are used to glazing. With gouache, you need a plan, but you can also cover your existing layers. There were a few mushrooms in here where I just painted over some parts because I didn't like how they turned out. It's just so hard to switch from watercolor to gouache all of a sudden xD

  • @YellowMelle
    @YellowMelle 6 років тому

    Totally! Difficulty with layering is why I didn't fully enjoy the standard gouache. Acrylic gouache is much more accommodating to me. It works just like acrylic, but it still looks like gouache so it's kind of perfect. Regardless, it's almost like learning to paint backwards when you're so used to watercolour.

    • @YellowMelle
      @YellowMelle 6 років тому

      I get so used to watercolour just flowing! Switching suddenly to an opaque paint can be instantly frustrating because it's so stubborn about moving and covering! And the colours dry up before I'm done mixing! lol.

    •  6 років тому

      Yeah I agree! Acrylic gouache is so much more "friendly" when you are used to glazing. I want to paint with it soon again, but it is very hard to switch between fluid and creamy.

      Hahaha, I have it, yes. It feels really cheaty, though, especially since I have trouble working with regular gouache >

    • @art_the_crossroads
      @art_the_crossroads 6 років тому

      hihi.. well all of us have different ways of painting. I had to use oils and acryla for like 5 years on art academy, so I got used to layers so much that when I got back to watercolors they couldn't do what I wanted any more, so I tried gouache, but the color shift was too much for me and the fragile of the paint layers was too irritating, so I end up with acryla gouache. Don't you have problems with how colors in normal gouache change after they dry? It's making me crazy sometimes.

    •  6 років тому

      I actually never noticed that gouache dries different. I mean, I know it does that, but it just never bothered me enough to notice it in my painting xD Probably because I don't plan my color schemes that much and I almost always go on top of the gouache with some color pencils.

    • @art_the_crossroads
      @art_the_crossroads 6 років тому

      Then you are lucky, I usually know what kind of color I want, so when it's different it's very annoying

  • @nabi767

    For me, watercolors are easy to get ruined unless planning it ahead with values and saving white. For gouache, I can adjust color tones by layering and adding white later.
    Now I think part of my watercolor problems is using cheap paper as a beginner. I have not felt bad buying good paints and brushes as an investment but not papers. Now I see the value of artist grade papers that can hold up more watercolor layers, lifting and archival. Finally, I bought an imported watercolor sketchbook from an art supply store. But I still find myself saving that for later. LOL Do you recommend artist grade watercolor papers for beginners? Well, I like how gouache is more tolerable to cheaper papers.
    For using water in gouache, I find a small spray bottle is very handy compared to dipping a brush to water.

    Hi Anita! I have the same love hate relationship with Copic or alcohol markers in general. I love the look it can make and the color choices, possibility to layer and all but they always seem to work agains me. I tried different papers, techniques and all - and I would say I was bad using them but the results didn’t suit my style and the result I wanted to achieve. I changed for alcohol markers to watercolor and finally found something that work for me and not against me.
    I used Gouache too but not really intensive as I disliked it that they disturbed the layers underneath (actually acryla gouache is on my wish list!!) but on that topic I have something to mention. I changed my watercolor brushes from the typical gold synthetic brushes to Kolinsky but both were kind of hard and even on watercolor lifted the layers. I then changed to Silver black velvet after I eyed them for a really long time after I saw them at Kristina Werner’s Channel (specifically on a Halloween card with a little pig in a pumpkin costume). They are quite expensive min. 15€ per brush but they are worth every penny I payed for them. They are really really soft, hold a good sharp point and hold water nicely too. I know that there are some brands that have similar brushes (it’s a mix of real and synthetic hair) for less money. So my point is maybe try some nice soft brushes for gouache? I’m sure there is something out there that is less expensive than silver black velvet ^^
    Oh and about what you could make with the mushroom illustrations - they look like good sticker motives to me ^^

    •  6 років тому

      I'm still not sure what I want to do with the mushrooms. I wish I had one of those Silhouette cutting machines so I could make my won stickers >< Maybe I will cut them by hand? :D
      I took a look at those brushes but as you've mentioned they are not fully synthetic, so I won't get them, but I will be looking around for something similar. I saw that Kristina video (big fan here!!) and I will try to see her other watercolor videos to see if she maybe uses other, fully synthetic brushes. I do need new brushes soon. I've had my current ones for quite some time and they are not as sharp as they used to be xD

      Anita Gadzińska I know that enough artist print out on sticker paper and then cut out by hand making so called sticker flakes - it seems to work nice.
      The other brushes Kristina uses are the Royal&Langnickel Zen brushes and she seems to like them quite a lot and they are way less expensive. The Brand Neptun and Da Vinci (here it was cosmotop as far as I remember) seem to have fully synthetic type of brushes wich mimic those kind of soft brushes. They are for sure out there ^^

    For me, gouache feels solid the way oils feel solid. It's thicker than acrylic when left w.o water. I mean, it's not super thick, and it flows okay, but the way it holds onto the brush feels more like oils to me.
    I love watercolor, and oils, so for me gouache is great, but I use it more as watercolors since their more vibrant then my current watercolor set. (And my gouache thins out nicely)

    •  6 років тому +1

      Oh, interesting! I've never tried oil paints before, but gouache is indeed much thicker than acrylic paint. I used to use acrylic paint with a lot of thinner, just like watercolors, but I am determined to learn and become comfortable with gouache!!!

      I'm glad you've enjoyed it! I always had a problem buying anything per tube, because what if I feel like painting with a certain color I don't have!! xD On the other hand, a limited palette is the best way to start getting used to gouache. In the case of these mushrooms, I made sure to just paint with blue, pink and this beige color (plus black and white), because this way it's easier to make everything coherent :)

    i adore these mushrooms, such nice shapes and love the colour palette! i've just dabbled with gouache, i'm a beginner and i just wanted to try diff mediums, but i struggle a bit with it. watercolour feels much more natural to me even though i'm just as much of a beginner with that haha, so i don't know. i just found gouache a bit hard to maneuver? idk if that makes sense... could be my brushes i guess, but i've used the same ones with acrylic and i don't have the same problem there. i just don't know what gouache wants from me!! i've watched tutorials and stuff but alas. for now i prefer struggling with watercolour ^^

      It makes perfect sense! I know it sounds funny, but I find watercolor to be more similar to a little kitten which will play with you and cuddle and it's all lovely with a bit of sting sometimes when the kitten bites your finger. The gouache, however, reminds me more of this aristocratic purebred cat that is pure pleasure to look at but will only give you attention if you follow all the right steps and pet it very VERY gently... otherwise, it will fight you to the death xD

    I just tried gouache as well, a student grade one and it's really a tricky paint. I also love it and hate it😂... I will keep trying.

    •  6 років тому

      Hahaha, it's definitely a learning curve! It's like... you hate the process, but love the result, right? xD

    I soooo know what you mean! I love gouache, but I feel like I just don't get it, it escapes me! I wish I could master it 😆

    •  6 років тому +1

      Now we just have to see whether or not we love it enough to master... or at least get better at using it :P

      Anita Gadzińska exactly! I worry I will just be too lazy and stick to watercolors🙈

    I believe these "Arteza Premium" are their student-grade, the scholars are called "Arteza Kids" and the professional "Arteza Experts" (or something like that, I don't know :P )

    •  6 років тому

      That just might be! Their colored pencils are "expert" and I'm in love with the quality of them >

    When you pulled the cup of water into the screen, I thought it was a cup of very rich cocoa, Such a pretty colour.
    I've been wanting to try gouache more lately too - I'm thinking of getting someone from Holland to send me some Royal Talen Gouache but what I've heard from a lot of people that gouache is usually always chalky when it dries, even WN gouache does it. Would you recommend either Arteeza or the cheaper Royal Talen ones for beginner, if youve tried both.. either way, I have to get it sent over to me since we don't really have much of a variety of brands in my country.

    •  6 років тому +1

      Oh, don't mind me, I'm just casually cleaning my brushes in this delicious cup of cocoa... for that added sweetness in my paintings xD It was a great color, wasn't it?
      It depends which Talens gouache you have in mind. They have a few different types. The Art Creation is their student brand and that one is of lower quality than Arteza's gouache. Much lower... but it's also much cheaper. The one that has Tempera and Plakkaatverf on the tube is of comparable quality (if not even a bit better) but has a lot more colors to choose from (like metallics, for example xD). I think they also have an artist quality gouache, but I haven't tried that one. It's all about what is affordable to you. I try to look for products closer to where I live because I've learned the hard way that taxes are evil. Stupid Daniel Smith paint costing 17 euro per tube ;.;

      Ohh thats interesting, I knew talens had 2 different types of gouache, one in a green and white package and another in a more blue one but i didnt know there was a third. I totally get you with the Daniel Smith paints - they're about 17-19EUs here for series 1 too.

    Hi Anita! It's Paradox. This was so cool. I actually was sent some gouache, watercolors and woodless watercolor pencils from Arteza for me to review as well. Gouache was actually my first traditional medium, Reeve's brand. Just like you it was definitely a love hate relationship with me as well so I'm glad to be able to try them again with a better quality set than Reeve's which would flake off if I used it too thick. I love this medium but it's a lot to get used to. I think I will practice more with it myself. Thank you for this video! Btw, I tagged you in the AAC piece I did that was inspired by your Hawaiian turtle folklore :) Hope you got to see it. Have a great day! Also check out this gouache artist if you haven't already: baotpham

    Anita, you are truly an amazing and dedicated artist, and I love your work. But please - please - please stop laughing in almost every other sentence. It is so annoying to listen to, and it makes you appear stupid, insecure, and immature, which you clearly are not. It is just a bad habit you need to quit. Try to write down what you want to say in the voice over, and read it aloud instead. That might help, until you have gained control over your laughing-habit.

      Your comment proves that everything that comes before a "but" is BS xD Thank you for your kind words that obviously come from a lovely and caring person BUT you should leave right now because I'm a happy person, I laugh and I ramble and this channel is obviously not for you.

      Jeeeezus that was so rude even I felt that on her behalf! Lady, it's very simple. The beauty is that if this bothers you so much, you click it off and don't watch it! So easy! What is in your heart that you felt you needed to run your fingers and insult someone that clearly feels like you meant to berate, belittle and humiliate her? So nasty! Who raised you? Because I was taught that if I didn't have something nice to say then I shouldn't say anything because life is hard enough, so we don't want to intentionally hurt people and make things worse. We should be encouraging and uplifting. You could've chosen to make her feel good instead by thanking her for the positive info she gave. So I still go by that rule unless something (like this!) is wrong or hurtful or a li, and I feel a responsibility to call someone out. Honestly, social media has ruined people and gives rude and ugly people a hammer to bash others without consequence and while hiding behind a keyboard like a coward. I'm so sick of people like you. You benefit ftom her sharing her knowledge and then bash her in the knee caps anyway. You just made yourself sound like a horrible person, and I feel bad for people in your real life. I mean, you didn't have to go as far as "stupid" because when you say someone sounds stupid, you're pretty much calling the person stupid. That made me gasp. There is absolutely nothing about her that comes across as stupid. Nothing. Let me enlighten you a bit: This isn't an opinion you expressed that you obviously think you are entitled to and have a "right" to express any time you want, it's just an insult disguised as one. Those nasty negative feelings of yours should be kept to yourself. Your feelings are unsolicited, unwarranted and offer no value whatsoever to anybody. You're just a mean, judgy, tacky jerk with no manners or class. The only message you delivered is that you must be awful to be around and probably are a gossipy loud mouth that no one likes. BYE.
