    I'm with Meow Meow Kapow... to adorable. And trust me, I don't use the word "adorable" very often! lol! Really enjoyed this and the conversation! I had no idea that these critters were hibernators and especially in leaves! wow! Always something to learn around here! Thank you and hope all is well! :)

    SOO CUTE!! I love hedgehogs and your painting turned out BEAUTIFUL. We have hedgehogs in our backyard in summer and I just love seeing them. ♥️♥️ They're one of the cutest animals there are.

    •  6 років тому +1

      Awww, so cute!! We live close to the fields, but the backyards are so closed off that there's no way anything can get inside. That's a shame because I would love to see some hedgehogs >< You're very lucky

    Like Denise, it's a really odd mental image to imagine hedgehogs running around European cities! I can't help but think that's it has to be freaking adorable. Kudos to you for helping out these little guys when you can :)

    •  6 років тому +1

      They don't appear that often xD It's still a super rare treat to see them just passing by and I treasure every memory of it. Honestly, I see deer more often. They ARE super cute! The little noises they make when they want to scare us away are not doing what they want them to do for sure. I melt every time xD

    We sometimes have a hedgehog in our backyard. Here in the Netherlands they are not rare, but I also think they are very cute. I rescued one once from the road.

    Thank you so much for the tips about what to do! I didn’t know there were danger signs that you should look out for at all. All I knew about them is that they are cute!

    I love hedgehogs! There are so many around here - they look for shelters for winter in the sheds and gardens. People sometimes have the houses you mentioned there for them, some leave cat food outside for them and water. :) Adorable little animals. The choosing of animal and the color selection are great!

      But honestly, I visited Poland (and love this country) a few times and people there, especially the younger ones, are so modern and open to the world and also conscious about the environment. I am sure hedgehog houses will be installed there too! :)

    It's bonkers to me that hedgehogs are just running around European cities, haha. I taught with African pygmy and we had to do so much education here in California regarding their illegal pet status (it was legally required). I love the book Ouch! which, as you said, talks about a hedgehog with an apple stuck on its back - so funny, I had no idea it was such a common theme! In that book she gets all kinds of things stuck in her spines and is asking the other animals to help her get them out so that she can hibernate for winter :)
    It's really interesting to hear about recommendations for treating wildlife in other parts of the world. Here, we are supposed to call wildlife centers and its not particularly legal to bring any into your homes. Definitely food for thought! This is such a unique little piece that I wouldn't ever think about doing in this way. Thanks for sharing it :)

    •  6 років тому +2

      What a cute book! I love how it takes the common theme and turns it into a realistic one.
      Wildlife centers are very uncommon in Poland and eastern Europe. In fact, even in Holland, which has much higher animal care standards that I've ever seen in Poland, I wouldn't know where to call if I found an animal in need. Police probably. Animal charities in Poland, for example, are scarce, a lot of them extremely underfunded and drowning in debt, so that's why it's often allowed to help an animal in need yourself but under the guidance of those charities. Just because they don't often have the means to pick the animal up. They still often do, even if it means driving for hours. And they are mostly volunteers having regular jobs besides that. It's crazy.
      And don't think that you can see hedgehogs around every corner hehe~ I still consider it a treat to see them, same as foxes and deer :)

    • @LanaGoesArt
      @LanaGoesArt 6 років тому +1

      I'm not sure about the Netherlands, but in Germany you can call animal hospitals, they sometimes take in wild animals that need care for free or will refer you to other organizations. Some private vets are also working together with organizations and will care for wild animals for free and release them into the wild. I've brought some birds there, that fell out of the tree and could not fly yet. There might be a similar system of care for wild animals, but I'm not sure.

    • @LanaGoesArt
      @LanaGoesArt 6 років тому +1

      Oh and if you have bigger animals as deer you call the police and they inform a vet and or the one who is responsible for that piece of forest (at least in Germany), who will take care of the deer. (If it's bad injured it might mean, that it's going to be killed.)

      Sooooo much is illegal in Cali though. So many pets you can't have. Even poor furry slinkies are illegal! But that is such a cute book idea! Would be adorable as a mini book.

    • @InLiquidColor
      @InLiquidColor 6 років тому +1

      Kitarra the reason they're illegal here is because the pose a massive environmental threat as an invasive species when irresponsible pet owners release their pets into the wild.
      Anita, thanks for sharing more about the organizations there! I'm so sorry to hear there's a lack of funding but it's great that they provide a resouce so that people can help :) I appreciate you taking the time to teach me something new!

    This drawing is adorable. It feels to me like a little wintering hedgehog dreaming of summer! Too cute! You said that there isn't much mythology about hedgehogs but I know in Russia hedgehogs are considered good luck. Having one in your area is considered a very good thing.

    •  6 років тому +1

      That's so great to hear! In some parts of the world hedgehogs were considered to be evil and working with witches so I'm glad some traditions were kinder to them in other parts :D

    Love this piece, he's so cute! The only fairytale I can think of to do with a hedgehog is Hans my Hedgehog, by the brothers Grimm, I saw The Storytellers TV version narrated by John Hurt it in school and I found the idea of a human sized hedgehog quite disturbing lol, but it was really sad.

    Super cute!! I saw one today near a lake, it was quite small and out during the day. We have had a very dry season this year, so many have sadly died😢 this teeny guy was looking for food, I hope he found some, at least he had plenty of water.

    •  6 років тому +1

      He must have been really desperate and confused to be out during the day >< It's really dry here as well. I make sure to leave water in the backyard for the birds, at least. Hopefully, it will rain again soon.

    AAAAAAAH!!!!! IT'S SO CUTE!!!!!!! I CAN'T STOP SCREAMING!!!
    Also, I didn't know about hedgies sleeping in piles of leaves and it makes me really sad to think that there has probably been more than one hedgehog burned in a pile. :( I've never had an encounter with hedgehogs, but I'm so glad that you gave so much information on how to care for a hedgehog if I ever do come across one in need. I'm so surprised at how much I've learned from our videos this month! I think we take for granted the animals that we see so often and don't stop to really THINK about what they're like. This has been a really great AAC round. =^.^=

    •  6 років тому +3

      I've been taking all the nature around me for granted for so long and I've just recently started learning about all the animals and critters living alongside us. Now, don't get me wrong, I always loved nature... it just never occurred to me to learn more about it ><
      And yeah, the hedgehog burning thing is a very serious threat. The foundation I'm supporting is constantly sharing news about burned hedgehogs coming to their center. Especially in Poland, it's still popular to burn the grass in the fields. Can you imagine how many animals are killed in that? I don't even want to think about it. I will instead focus on helping as much as I can ><
      We are doing a great job so far, right? Very different content from everyone and so much research put into it. I love it!

      a popular festival in the UK is Guy Fawkes Night commonly known as Bonfire Night. As well as fireworks people have bonfires and "Check for hedgehogs" is really common advice given out alongside the usual fire safety stuff. My primary school used to do a big bonfire which would be built a day or two before it was lit and I remember us all being taught as little kids that the caretaker (janitor) had a sacred duty of shining a light in the bottom of it and poking it with a stick to make sure no hedgehogs had settled in before the bonfire party.
      (sorry I just thought you would like to know about odd British customs and hedgehogs)

      Btw you can help passing hedgehogs in your urban yards; have some old greenery pots burried in your yard,prefferably where a cat cant reach them and have the opening of the pots a bit above ground, that way they have a safe place to rest same goes for migrating frogs; with loads of town ponds you will have more frogs lurking for a safe spot in your yard.

    There aren't hedgehogs where I live, but there are raccoons. I have been told that a red flag for a sick raccoon is also them coming out during the day. With that being said, there are some of them that live near our house that do come out during the day. They've been doing it for years though. It makes me wonder if they are sick or just have a weird sleep schedule. They aren't aggressive or anything. They also don't bother anyone or anything.
