You made your dog so vivid and alive looking, yet at the same time painterly, which is a skill I admire so much! Wonderful job on the paintings. I never tried gouache before, but im considering trying it out, so thank you for the tips, watching you paint has revealed some things about it to me. Thank you for sharing!!! Lots of love!
Jojo Moyes I would say that it means 'a bit not so realistic and detailed looking', with less smooth transitions and more blocked out color patches. c:
If you use watercolor and want to try gouache, you can also just buy a tube of white and mix it with your watercolors! Winsor and Newton sells a primary set of designer gouache for around $20 on Amazon as well.
Tips and tricks are always helpful but just being able to watch someone like you through the learning process is Way more helpful than you may know. Thank you for sharing. I really like the one on the bottom.
I was so confused when you started putting blue on the page at the start but as I kept watching the video, everything came together and now I am obsessed with that painting!!! How do you decide where to put the colour though?
Those Holbeins are the best! Edit: Let me just say, the tip about cheap paint.... don't do it! You said yourself in the video you can tell the quality of the paint. Holbein gouache is a bit on the premium side, yes, but this is due to the greater amount of pigment in the paint. This allows not only more vivid colors, but a more spreadable and workable painting medium, which also allows better coverage. Those small Holbein tubes will go a long way. Cheaper paints will require more paint volume ratio, and will tend to break apart particularly when it comes to washes. I always regretted cheapening out on paint quality. You're lucky to start out with the good stuff :D
I'm about to start using gouache. I love the way you lay down and mixed colors in both of these. This helps to give me some ideas on how I think I'll be more comfortable using it. Thanks!
Really lovely paintings in gouache. The Brittany present day painters like Lamazo are also very interesting to learn from. I love the use of white in gouache, can really lighten a watercolour too.
This was SO helpful! I just started playing with gouache (& watercolor) about a month or so ago & since I've never tried painting before I've scoured UA-cam for tips on how to use it. Thanks for explaining so well. 😊💚
both paintings turned out so well!!! i’m in awe of how lovely the colors look tgt esp in the bottom one 💞💞 and thanks for this video! i have a set of cheap gouache paints that i’ve been too hesitant to use, but this is the perfect motivation. lov your art and your videos!!!!!
I have the exact same set (plus a 15ml tube of iris) and I agree that they’re excellent. The colors are really vibrant and I liked them so much that I tried the watercolors by the same brand which were really nice too
I actually love the smoothness of Moleskine, when you have to blend with color pencils, it looks really intense as it doesn’t leave spaces from the tooth
your dog... is so cute! Even though I'm not much into painting, I do want to try it more, especially gouache. Trying a new medium can be hard because you're not used to it but it's always nice to try. Also, congrats on 150k! You make great videos and it has helped me through my art journey.
End results look (pardon my French) fucking gorgeous!! I absolutely love the colours; I know you said you weren't as happy with the bottom painting, but personally, I love the saturated look. Such creativity, talent, and skill you possess. You've inspired me so much, if only you knew!!
I agree with what you said about moleskines! A friend gave the classic one to me as gift and I ended up using it for writing since the pages are so thin. Then I bought two small ones, one for sketching and one for watercolor. I also tought that the paper on the sketching one was a bit too smooth, but I love the watercolor sketchbook. Give it a try if you can someday, maybe buy the smaller one so that it won't be so expensive :) I use a lot of water on my paintings and the pages don't warp. Also the paper has more texture and it's so nice to use pencil on it. I used gouache on it and it holds well. I haven't tried too many watercolor sketchbooks, but this one was worth the price for me.
I'm running out of white. I've been doing a sketch that turned into a full painting, a portrait of my girlfriend, and yeah, I really need to buy more whites. So, it's true. With gouache you need to stockpile a lot of white paints. I'll probably try to mix odd colors on my paper with acrylics and then try to paint over it with gouache just like James Gurney does it (he does it with casein) just to try experiment more. Acryla Gouache and Casein is non-existent in my country, so, I'll probably try to mix things here and there. Anyway, awesome video and excellent painting! Keep up the good work!
I just got gouache for my birthday too! I was in my room and unpacking the presents and I got a Reeves / Reeve gouache, and I heard you after a few seconds talking about how reeve gouache are too oily and you wouldn't like it. I was just in complete silence.
Ahhhh I just really loved how you drew your doggo with the different colors! I really like the style! It looks really good and I had a lot of fun watching this lovely video! Keep it up! ^^
Ahhh amazing I was/am never really into painting but recently I have been wanting to paint SOMETHING but I don't have enough space to work but I hope I do soon! Thank u for making your amazing videos and artwork 🖤💚🖤
Congrats on super duper channel accomplishments and late channel birthday and gouache experiments and cute puppy!!! There’s a lot to be excited about in this video! Holbein is ALSO the gouache I use, and I got two large sets of them when I went crazy and decided to start learning gouache over on my channel. =>..
eyy i just bought the holbein set too but i got 12 set cuz i wanted two of each primary. I kind of wish I had that magenta primary tho. I think it's pretty good for the price, theyre really creamy and nice and much cheaper than the winsor newton gouache , tho the tubes are pretty small.
Love your dog paintings. He's a cutie. I think when you talk about "acrylic gouache" you may be referring to how some painters mix their gouache with acrylic... or possibly casein paints, which are opaque like the gouache, but don't reconstitute. I sometimes use casein as a base layer
There's also certain types of gouache that don't rework with water once dry. The Holbein acryla gouache is one example! But I'm actually enjoying the fact that I can rework mine with water.
I was painting with gouache my entire life because it's kind of a go to medium in where I live, and I didn't like watercolour that much. But recently I tried to paint with tempera and it's gorgeous! Since I prefer to paint thicker, I didn't like how unstable gouache can be and how lighter coluors always tend to raise on top, which isn't possible with tempera
for pencils and watercolor and gouache and whatnot i enjoy the travelogue handbook co sketchbooks! they've got crazy awesome paper and i love it- pretty darn cheap too you should try them out!! :)
You Doggo is so super cute! And I think it is pretty interesting how you lay down your first layer like watercolor and then go slowly in with more gouache. Also you´re right x3 you will need al ot of white with gouache. I have the reeve ones and well lets say to them I have a big white tube from Schminke now because the reeves one is empty and I didn´t even use Gouache all the time :D
Wonderful video! This is the first of yours that I've seen. I have some gouache sitting in my closet that I've never even touched, and I really want to try it! This was really helpful. And I totally agree with you about moleskins. A lot of the price is just because of the brand name imo. I'd be curious to see what their products geared towards artists are like but...I could probably get something just as good or better for half the price.
You can water down acrylic safely on paper or wood it’s fine. It’s on shiny surfaces like primed canvas it looses its structural integrity. The advantage of gouache is the creamy ness and the fact that it has a matte finish and acrylic is glossy.
Hi JelArts, newish subscriber here! I was wondering if you'd be willing to cover the topic of landscapes in one of your future videos. I already have the basic skills involved with drawing people and objects, but I've never really drawn environments, backgrounds, or landscapes. What are the steps to improve in that area? Have any special tips/tricks? I love your work and this channel, and I'd be happy to hear your advice!
I have 2 big tubes of acrylic gouache. They're from the brand Jo Sonja's and I have Sapphire Blue and Plum Pink. I really want the Arteza brand ones, but you know I can't pick out my birthday presents only request them lol
I love these little doggos!! 😍 Thank you for all the info too! In case u want to try a new sketchbook, try mossery.co. Their sketchbooks are beautiful (also a tad customizable) and the paper is much better than moleskine for painting purposes. Moleskine Watercolour sketchbook isnt that great.... i ended up just using mine for a colour test book, and pre-practice sketches. The paper is wierd :/
Hey, I really love your style so much! I’ve told you this before, but I need to tell you again for some unknown reason XD I also want you to do a tutorial on how you draw eyes. I’m really having trouble with my style, and I need some help ;) I love the aesthetic of your art , how you color, and basically your whole style. It would definitely help if you did a tutorial on the way you draw eyes :) Thanks!
I like to use dollar store sketchbooks. Do the pages warp? Yep. Do the pages handle water well? Nor really. Why do I use it? It's cheap so I don't fear I will ruin it. The pages are kind of a creamy color, I hate pure white pages to work with. It makes me feel free to experiment. But I made my own watercolor sketchbook with a watercolor paper pad that I simply perfurated with Lavenger punch and put together with Staples Arc discs. For the cover I cut down a plastic mat from the dollar store and punch it. Since I started it with the big discs, this sketchbook will require more sheets to beome full but I can do it little by little putting other types of paper too. Not sure if that's something you would like to try
I use Savoir faire, which is a fairly cheap student grade gouache. It was $13 for the whole set, and I think they're perfect for starting out, and they build very well. Some of my classmates bought Reeves, and personally, I think the SF lay down nicer and blend better, but again, that's just me. If anyone has used the Windsor newton gouache please let me know what you think! I'm going to get a large tube of their white gouache because I ran out of the small tube in like a week.
I couldn't help but notice we have the same camera! But mine overheats and shuts down after filming for 1 hour.. does yours do that aswell? Do you just paint really fast or did you find a solution for it?
You made your dog so vivid and alive looking, yet at the same time painterly, which is a skill I admire so much! Wonderful job on the paintings. I never tried gouache before, but im considering trying it out, so thank you for the tips, watching you paint has revealed some things about it to me. Thank you for sharing!!! Lots of love!
Thank you so much! You should definitely try it :)
but wait tf does painterly mean??
Jojo Moyes I would say that it means 'a bit not so realistic and detailed looking', with less smooth transitions and more blocked out color patches. c:
The end results of guache always looks so beautiful, i really want to try it out as well
If you use watercolor and want to try gouache, you can also just buy a tube of white and mix it with your watercolors! Winsor and Newton sells a primary set of designer gouache for around $20 on Amazon as well.
Ohh that's a really cool tip! I'll have to try that eventually.
a tube of white gouache or watercolor?
I mix them all the time. They are very similar, and so fun to work with! Thanks for the video. You're super talented and honest :)
The way you layer colors is so stunning. I absolutely love the build on this piece.
How do you decide where to put the colour though?
values.
Why were you confused?
@@nuped7021 because dogs aren’t blue lol
Im just getting into gouache myself, just a leg behind you. This is SUPER helpful. Thanks. Your dog seems like a very good boy.
Those Holbeins are the best!
Edit: Let me just say, the tip about cheap paint.... don't do it! You said yourself in the video you can tell the quality of the paint. I rewatched it, because i buyed some gouache yesterday and i wanted to try them out. Thank youuuuuuuuuu! :) It was very helpful to me :))
I know I’m late to the party but I wanted to recommend the canson xl mixed media sketchbook for gouache. It’s my favorite and it’s 5$ at Walmart!
Nice sketches: bold colors, bold brushwork. What's not to like? You're on the right path. Thanks.
This was SO helpful! I just started playing with gouache (& watercolor) about a month or so ago & since I've never tried painting before I've scoured UA-cam for tips on how to use it. Thanks for explaining so well. 😊💚
So much fun to watch, you are very talented. Loved the commentary too. Thanks
Gouache is a medium that you really want at least a pretty decent brand. I have a moleskin for gouache I think it is a 300 gsm.
both paintings turned out so well!!! i’m in awe of how lovely the colors look tgt esp in the bottom one 💞💞 and thanks for this video! i have a set of cheap gouache paints that i’ve been too hesitant to use, but this is the perfect motivation. lov your art and your videos!!!!!
I love your channel and your style. I always draw animals so I love when other artists do so that I can see how draw make them.
I have the exact same set (plus a 15ml tube of iris) and I agree that they’re excellent. The colors are really vibrant and I liked them so much that I tried the watercolors by the same brand which were really nice too
Their Oil Paints are freakin' sweet as well. Though can be hard to find in some places.
I feel like you’ve improved so much just in the past few months!!! So wonderful love watching u grow :)
I LIVE FOR THIS TYPE OF ART
I actually love the smoothness of Moleskine, when you have to blend with color pencils, it looks really intense as it doesn’t leave spaces from the tooth

I think the second one too, I think it's really cute😊 I haven't painted any animals with guache in a while, but watching this really made me want to😁
End results look (pardon my French) fucking gorgeous!! I absolutely love the colours; I know you said you weren't as happy with the bottom painting, but personally, I love the saturated look. Such creativity, talent, and skill you possess. You've inspired me so much, if only you knew!!

Nice video, JelArts! I was thinking of trying out guache, so this is very helpful.
Very nice video. Thank you. Your paintings are amazing. ⭐️⭐️⭐️
I love the stickers on your sketchbook!
I love the dog painting! Great work.
Thank u for making your amazing videos and artwork 🖤💚🖤
aww I love this! Yeah, I had a ton of trouble with Reeves gouache paint as well.
I buy the 3 primary gouache colors the other day and I love how they looks in my sketchbook
seeing the thumbnail, I already know this is going to be a great video!
I love how you explain things so well 😌
Congrats on super duper channel accomplishments and late channel birthday and gouache experiments and cute puppy!!! There’s a lot to be excited about in this video!
Holbein is ALSO the gouache I use, and I got two large sets of them when I went crazy and decided to start learning gouache over on my channel. =>..

Turner acryl gouache is a really good brand. I use it all the time and the colors and texture is fantastic
Wow I love your art!! It's always really impressive and amazing, never stop doing it!

WoW! Those dogs look amazing
Wow for just being you are great at it! Makes me want to try :) Good job.
I just bought my first set of gouache paints yesterday, this is perfect timing lol.
Yay! This is the earliest I've ever been!
I also loved the video and the tips really helped!
Ya know, I have always been afraid of the guache set on my shelf... but this video inspired me to man up and try it out.
What's the worst thing that could happen? It gets used up, that's all!
Wonderful video! This is the first of yours that I've seen. I have some gouache sitting in my closet that I've never even touched, and I really want to try it! This was really helpful. Updated intro.
For spring! (I should have updated it last week)
i feel like you’ve asked “yanny or laurel” on one of wisteriamoon’s videos.. hmm..
You can water down acrylic safely on paper or wood it’s fine. It’s on shiny surfaces like primed canvas it looses its structural integrity. The advantage of gouache is the creamy ness and the fact that it has a matte finish and acrylic is glossy.

OMG YOUR ART IS SO AeStHeTiC! This is the first video I've seen from you. Your art is so pretty. Thanks for the video + 1 subscriber
i’m not sure they sell this specific pack anymore ): i believe they either changed the packaging which is kinda sad or they created a new one
Beautiful sketch! You handle gouache really well. :)
I have 2 big tubes of acrylic gouache. They're from the brand Jo Sonja's and I have Sapphire Blue and Plum Pink. I really want the Arteza brand ones, but you know I can't pick out my birthday presents only request them lol
do you use an app to know what colour you should like how do you do like blocky blocky
Do you have a watercolor tutorial? I love your videos very helpful and inspiring! BTW Beautiful job on your pup!
When it becomes spring we have the new into!!
I was hoping to see your sweet doggy in the video! 😍
I loved the drawing!

I use Holbein gouache too! I just got my set of 12, haven’t really tried it out yet though
I absolutely love the different colors you mixed into the painting! Awesome artwork!
Thank you!
If you want to do a series I think you should do the 300 or 500 drawing prompt challenge
I love all the colours and it still looks like black fur.
how bout watercolor paper? do you think it would work? I'm afraid to use my gouache set on my watercolor pad.
Your words are so emty but I love your art ❤️

I love the edit in this video!!!
what set did you use since the amazon link is not working well
That's cool. Well done :)
If you running out of ideas you can do the 500 prompts series like kasey golden
I couldn't help but notice we have the same camera! But mine overheats and shuts down after filming for 1 hour.. does yours do that aswell? Do you just paint really fast or did you find a solution for it?
Amazing, thats a skill! 😍😍😍
That's awesome I've never used gouache I kind of want to test ir but I don't know 💕😂❤️🎀
Just give it a shot! It's really fun :)
These paintings are so beautiful, I love your style! What sketchbook do you recommend for oil paint and gouache other than moleskin?!
