  • Don't just use hatching for lights and darks, hatching can create amazing effects for form edges, textures, depth and light. Get the most out of your hatching to add visual drama and realism to scenes that would be otherwise impossible to draw.

I love all these more organic subjects you're drawing now... So helpful to see how you think about breaking them down and tackling them with the fine-liner :)

Your videos are the most helpful drawing ones I’ve ever seen. It’s the style I like to draw in and then watercolor. Your video are excellent guides. Thank you.

for me, ink drawing and hatching is the same as jazz: a perfect harmony between technique and chaos. with simple lines, you create patterns, movement, curves, shadows, textures.
and technique is essential to free yourself.
    Good job 🎉

Your videos are just so helpful. I do mostly watercolor but occasionally like to try my hand at line and wash or just regular old drawing. I have very limited patience so my hatching often turns into scribbling. That said, when I’m able to slow myself down I have found that your hatching tips have really helped me to produce some drawings that are much better than I have ever felt capable of. While I still prefer to do a loose drawing with watercolor the techniques I learn from you have opened up more possibilities!

I take it back-you are not a gifted artist -you are an artistic genius. 👍

So I spent an hour or so attempting this drawing...oof...hated the first one so thought I would just hone in on one step, ended up drawing the whole pic again. I had watched your video in the morning, tried it with the reference then looked at your version wondering what you did with the texture of the stones...hmm not much 😅 , think you were focused on getting the values right. I tried to differentiate the rocks from the path. Not sure I succeeded.😅 But it was a great learning experience. I am a huge fan of August Lamm and have her book, just missed a workshop she ran in Brighton argh. Thanks Stephen 😊

Does this apply to drawing in ink only?

I think it could work also with color markers, pencils, or pastels.

It would work with any graphic means. 😀
