    Evap leaks are a nightmare. I am glad you were able to get rid of those codes.

      Thanks, I’m so used to them at this point that it doesn’t phase me anymore haha. I’m surprised that most of this warning lights do not affect performance. Well I know it eventually will. I just found cracks on the driver’s side headers on another one and no codes! I could hear it at startup why I looked. Very interesting indeed!

      All throughout the years of working on the JK, the dreaded minor/major evap leak is the most annoying and frustrating. For some I just ignore it already and delete it. It’s a good thing my area doesn’t have the CEL as an item to fail inspections.

    Great job. I did exactly the same things you did EXCEPT disconnect the battery. Well I did it and well the light is off. Thanks for sharing. Well done. Mahalo.

      Jeeps (JK & JL) are pretty awesome rigs but I’ve had issues with sensors going nuts. I came across a JL truck with less than 1k miles and the dash lights are on. I still love them but they are testing my patience haha! Thanks and I hope yours act better..

    I knew you were from Hawaii and the walk around the green jeep showed the license plate and confirmed it.
    Lived there for 30+yrs. Miss it every day.
    I have the same issues with these JKs with evap/emissions codes.

      You’re Kama’aina and I hope you come back. I totally understand the move though. Plenty of my friends moved to Vegas already. The prices of homes here are crazy nowadays and buying a lot of locals out. I’m one of the lucky few that are still around because of my wife’s family. Aloha brother!

      Thanks! Pleased read my other comments on here. I love JKUs but this issue and the constant CEL is getting on my nerves. I’ve owned five JKU and two JK in the past both with the 3.8 and 3.6 and all of them had CEL coming on for all kinds of sensors and especially this 0456. I’m at a point in which I’ve just been driving a 2010 Rubicon with this code on for months. It doesn’t affect the performance so I just ignore the light now.

  • @notbrendn
    @notbrendn Рік тому +2

    So I didn’t know, but you can check codes on the Jeep itself.. If you turn the key to the Off/On position 3 times (without turning on ignition) the code codes will pop underneath P N R D [2017 JK]

    Your video was very helpful, I've been dealing with that Gas Cap message on my dash for a year now, sooooooo annoying. I'm going to get a smoke machine and track down that pesky leak on my 2010 JK.

    How do you know if the valves are open or shut

  • @chazzicili3244
    @chazzicili3244 10 місяців тому +1

    Currently dealing with P0456 small evap leak. Previous owner looks like had same problem and fixed it but problem came back. Already changed the purge valve and code came back on. Was told to smoke it out and if no leaks then i would have to take dealership and do a flash reset cus code keeps popping up.

    • @StylishGreaseMonkey
      @StylishGreaseMonkey  10 місяців тому +3

      First, this is just my recommendation and you do what makes you comfortable. I would ignore the stupid thing and avoid the dealership at any cost except if they are willing to cover it under some sort of warranty. I’ve had nothing good to say about the dealerships in my area knowing they do what I do anyway. For example, I was chasing an ABS and anti skid dash light on my 2007. After replacing all 4 wheel sensors to no avail, I knew all along that it was the clock spring. Luckily there was a recall on it so I took it to the dealership. The mechanic swore up and down along with everyone that worked the front desk that replacing the CS will not fix my issues. They offered to ‘troubleshoot’ it for me. Not free of course so I told them to just change the CS per the recall. I would have known if they did it or not because I secretly marked the steering wheel cover. Anyway, they replaced the CS but didn’t unhook the battery. I know this because I also mark my battery connections. I received the vehicle back with the dash lights still on but I knew that it would go away after two miles. It takes about that distance and at a good speed for the sensors to sense the correction. Well, after about 2 miles the lights turned off and never came back.
      Sorry for the lengthy story about my dealership experience. The P0456 code could be anything and you might not even find it. One thing I noticed is that it would come and go for some and stay on for others. I can tell you that I’ve racked up over 20k miles on another Jeep that have this code and it did not affect the drivability and performance of that Jeep. I knew it it didn’t so I ignored the CEL and kept driving it. Again, that’s just my own prerogative. I love and hate Jeeps. I’ve had all of them from the CJs to the JKU. I stopped at the JKU because I was tired of Jeep taking my money and increasing my negative energy. I have much older vehicles that never gave me this much headache.
      Lastly, if you still have the patience, drop the tank and take a look at the connections there. They are famous for developing cracks and letting air in the system. I hope you figure it out or just ignore it and keep driving. Cheers!

    • @chazzicili3244
      @chazzicili3244 10 місяців тому

      @StylishGreaseMonkey yeah I'm trying to avoid the dealership to. Thanks for the recommendation on dropping the tank, sounds like a headache but if I find the time then I will. Gonna have my battery checked first cus it has hard time starting at random times but idk if that's because of evap leak or something else entirely. I might just have to grab me a evap smoker to. Thanks for the reply and suggestions 🤙🏽

    Hey Thomas great trouble shooting. Would you kindly send me the link to the EVAP smoke tester. Dealing with P0455 & P0456 on my 2015 Jeep Jk as we speak. EVAP leak small & EVAP leak large. What a pain in the butt! Appreciate the feedback. 👊🤙

    • @StylishGreaseMonkey
      @StylishGreaseMonkey  Рік тому +1

      Thanks! I hate that code because so far all of the Jeep JK I got a hold of have this stupid code (or eventually shows up). I sometimes get lucky by applying a thin layer of silicone paste under the gas cap. Another Jeep however, I replaced everything and nothing worked.
      Below is the link to the smoke machine. The one I originally purchased overheated and caught on fire yikes!! Below is a different brand that’s made in the U.S. Good luck and if all else fail, ignore it and keep on driving your jeep haha…

    Anyway to narrow this down? im smelling gas when i fuel up. Already replaced gas cap and the small evap line on top of engine.

    • @StylishGreaseMonkey
      @StylishGreaseMonkey  Рік тому +3

      Is the fuel overflowing when you fill up? If it is, I suspect that your Evap Canister Purge Valve may be stuck or malfunctioning. Another issue with this valve is that the gasket fails and it no longer provide a seal. Check it out. It's located on the rear of your evap canister (black box). Get on the ground below the driver side passenger door for JKU. Unhook the gas evap line and the electrical connector and twist it counter clockwise and it should come off. Once it is off then you can check if the valve is stuck or not and if the gasket is torn. You can order both online to replace it if that is what's wrong with it.
      Unfortunately, JK/U are known for the evap system failure. Even just a pin hole on the system can trigger the ECU to throw a code.
      One of the most common failures I've seen (on most of the JKU I've owned) is the white connector on the top of your tank. The nipple that connects the evap line to the tank via this white round thing gets brittle and just breaks off or crack. Check that out too.
      Hope this helps and sorry for the long reply.

      @maxdominguez5543 10 місяців тому +1

      If you're still alive and this issue is still happening, please check the fuel supply line under the engine cover/manifold area. This happened to me except it was a considerably huge leak and strong gas smell. I drove it for a few days thinking it wasn't a big deal but when the smell started getting stronger, I took a closer look. Crack in the fuel supply line and it was spraying gas all over the engine. One small spark and it could have been bad for me. Hope this isn't the issue for you although its a relatively easy fix.

    i have a bit of info for you, the jeep will only run the self diagnostic when it is below 3/4 or above 1/4 a tank of gas. I had a crack on the roll over valve (white part on top of the gas tank). the hose is a bit too short and puts stress on the connection.

    • @StylishGreaseMonkey

      Hey thanks! I finally came across this very same issue with a 2009 Rubicon that I'm working on. It looks like the previous owner had made temporary repairs down there but it started to throw the codes again. I may bring the tank down and take a closer look.

      @toro34torres Рік тому +1

      @StylishGreaseMonkey I'm in the process of tracing mine down as well. Right now all my codes are clear but it's still throwing a gascap alert. Good luck!

    So frustrating. I had a solenoid go bad on my kitchen faucet (one of those motion sensitive deals). It took me a while of troubleshooting to figure it out. $200 for the solenoid or $250 to replace the entire faucet. I went with the latter. Glad that you got it sorted out on your Jeep. I agree on the check engine light warnings. I couldn't deal with that. Plus, what if it is on and I learn to ignore it, and then something else goes wrong. How would I know? BTW... I dig that color, but in a previous video you mentioned that you might paint or wrap. What colorway are you thinking?

    • @StylishGreaseMonkey
      @StylishGreaseMonkey  Рік тому

      Thanks Mark! There’s something about fixing something or solving complex problems that keeps me going. I just walk away when I know it’s getting stressful and come back with a better solution. I dig your decision to change the whole thing for only $50 more. I would do exactly the same thing.
      I was thinking painting it black but I’ll leave it alone since it is a nice color!
