Shallow mouthpieces, if played properly, can have just a rich low registers. You must back off the air and let the tighter cup, throat, and backbore do the work for you. Many professional players have proved this time and again, myself included. There is no such thing as a "cheater" mouthpiece. Certain mouthpieces are more or less efficient for certain types of work. The rim shape and bite also have a lot to do with how high you can play comfortably. Many people cannot play high on Bach mouthpieces, for example, because their rims are antiquated and uncomfortable for high notes. Or, to me, uncomfortable in general.

If you haven't already found out, screamer is one size in itself. It is a mock lead piece, while they also sell sizes that correspond with the Bach size scale.

@@AdamHallacher I can understand the cold part, but a blasty tones never a good thing unless specified. You're loud ear melting hits should sound just as beautiful as your normal meso fortes.

It depends on what music you want to play. If you want to play lead trumpet, one of these would work. But if you play in concerts or a jazz band, a double c doesn't matter.

peter - how high you can play is not the standard for telling whether you are good or bad.

Keep in mind everyone that this mouthpiece won't make higher notes come out, it will just allow for you to get faster air through the piece, which will allow pitches you may not usually hit. It is a test though. If your range expands with this mouthpiece, it means you aren't properly executing range, because you are still relying on pressure.

For the record: Shallow mouthpieces dont "give you" high range. they just give you a brighter sound. period. also,plastic mouthpieces dull the sound, so what id recommend is getting threaded mouthpieces that can accept different rims, so you can have the cold weather advantages of the plastic, but the sound of a metal piece.

The video you just linked talks about a cheaply made mouthpiece. Im talking about high quality mouthpieces that offer a threaded rim option. Bob Reeves, GR, and Stomvi-USA. With these companies, you not only get a top of the line mouthpiece with incredible consistency, but you get expert craftsmanship in custom work. Much better than Bach in most opinions. They can make plastic copies of their rims, and thread them onto their own underparts. So you get an ultra high quality mouthpiece with the advantages of plastic with none of its disadvantages.
stephen crosby Hi, The best way to increase airstream speed is to compress lower abdominals against the diaphragm and you will be screaming and playing more comfortable in all ranges. I call it the breathe and squeeze method. You can play high even on a deep,deep mp like the Bach 5V ,if you are familiar with that one it has probably the deepest V cup. I have a 3C mutec mp and it does not respond as well as metal. Metal,metal,metal.
John Healy I totally agree with you. Shallow mouthpieces are only needed for sound. I can play as high as ill ever need to on anything. be it a Shew #1 or a schilke 24E4e, ive got the same range on both. Whatever your visualization of how the air is compressed in the body, one thing remains clear. Mouthpieces are not a factor in range.

I just bought one of these, but it really pinched my sound. I could play higher on a metal mouthpiece than this. Is there a way for me to fix the pinching problem? Or should I return it and buy something else instead?
Sean Hendricks They won't work for everyone. The principal behind this mouthpiece is that it speeds up your airflow. If it doesn't make the higher register easier, then I wonder whether there is something bizarre about your embouchure.

I might pick one of these up for high school marching band next year. Our screamer is graduating and I'm next in line, I usually use a 1 1/2C for everything so my endurance is out the window and I'll need range for solos and things. Also it gets cold so a plastic mouthpiece will be nice

I prefer the sound of the metal piece, the tone is thicker, with the plastic one it really sounds like u're blowing a 100% plastic trumpet :S
Bobby Shew plays on these most of the time now and he sounds phenomenal

I had one of these for my cornet when I was busking, when I was quite young. My teacher suggested it and it helped my develop my range and then when I switched back I didn't have so much of a mental block around the higher notes.

Hello Trent. You're not a trumpet player? I know this is an older video but you play great. I've been playing for 41 years and about 10 professionally. I've tried these mouthpieces and the Screamer is great, I don't think they make them anymore....I haven't been able to find them. These are perfect for marching band because they will hold your lips in place vs a metal mouthpiece. Play On!!!!!
Hi Trent, great video and explanation! I would be interested to see a review of the weight of mouthpieces. I notice you play a megatone Bach and I am curious of the benefit of the heavier blank versus a standard weight Bach? keep up the good work on the videos!

Honestly, no matter the piece, if it works it works. I use a shallow piece mostly and it’s tone for me is better. I plan on getting a Kelly for the fall.
That, "I'm not a professional trumpet player in any way, shape or form; particularly not shape." sums up my whole life in any hobby of mine.

To a degree, this is a tessitura issue.
Examining extremes often grants insight to the norm, and the extremes are exemplified by the brass family itself. I would hate to be required to play tuba parts on an E flat cornet, or eefer parts on a Double B flat tuba.
This same thing is illustrated within similar instruments -- for instance, I would use different equipment, one way or another, to play big-band lead than I would to play fourth, whether I'm talking trumpet or trombone.
The differences in equipment include both the instrument and the mouthpiece. For most players, a good low register mouthpiece is not an efficient upper register mouthpiece, and the reverse is also true. The largest mouthpiece I have is a Jet Tone Symphony, which I can't manage on a B flat horn. It is unthinkable to employ it on piccolo.

A bit late, but the way I did it (Trombone/Euph) is I just found some easy songs written in treble clef and just very, very slowly got the muscle memory down. I'm talkin' easy like Mary had a little lamb. Just simple stuff to help you memorize each note. I also just printed out a page with scales on it and just played those for a little bit each day.
The most important thing to remember, is (On a Bb instrument) the note written is not the note played. When you see a C written in treble clef, you're going to be playing a Bb. When you see a D, you'll be playing a C. Every note is written two half steps up from what you are actually playing. This is called transposing, if you weren't aware, you can read more if you like, but in my opinion it's a pretty stupid rule in music that we've been forced to live with.
Also, another thing that may help you, but unless you already know this it probably won't, Bb instruments reading treble clef is read the same as tenor clef. If you can read tenor clef, just picture that whenever you are playing treble and it's the exact same notes.
Bonus Unrelated Fact: The Eb transposition of treble clef reads the same as bass clef. So if you see sax music, you can easily read it if you just picture bass clef in it's place.

Not only is the sound "weak and unstable" on the low end, it's weak and unstable on your high end as well, LOL. To me a high note to double C needs to be loud and ferocious, not squealy like you're holding the end of a full balloon making a squealy noise, heh. Playing lead in a big band situation you need that roar of a sound not thin squeals,etc. There needs to be balance between too large and too small so you can have good solid tone and good movement up/down the registers without notes going away of "fuffing out" on you. That said it takes time to get used to a mouthpiece, at least around 30 days or so or until the new piece bottoms out on you if it's too shallow, or sucks the life out of you if it's too big. You don't just pick up mouthpieces and automatically scream loud high notes on em no matter what the size. Aim for tone and flexibility first over adding a couple notes to your range.

I would say in that case you would probably want a deeper cup mouthpiece to darken that tone, but between the kelly and the 14a4a, if your season goes into november and you live somewhere that gets cold, the kelly screamer would make more sense because you'll be able to actually play in the cold. If your season is warm the whole time, the 14a4a would make more sense just for uniformity. I don't have experience to say how the plastic might affect tone.

A little late on the reply, but in Texas, you would be kicked out of a competitive program for using this "cheater" mouthpiece. Most of our lead trumpets hit top Cs and above, with medium to deep cup sizes such as a Bach 5B. If you use these and call yourself a trumpet player. Your only fooling yourself.
Just so you know the specs of a screamer are almost identical to a 14A4A, I used to have a kelly screamer. In my opinion just get the schilke/yamaha. The rim is more comfortable, plastic or not.
Also, smaller volume (lead) pieces don't increase your range. They help you cut through the band. They also don't speed up your air, it compresses the waves already caused by your lips buzzing. The only thing a smaller cup does is give a little more resistance and the compression.

I actually have 2 kelly mouth pieces as well as 2 Schilke 14A4A mouthpieces. only one kelly is a screamer. i used Kelly when in marching band screamer on trumpet, the other on mellophone. I personally think in that situation kelly was the better option. but i almost always used the 14A4A in Concert band settings. but personally I think the kelly mouthpiece is going to have a better feel as it is going to feel the same no matter how many times you put it up to your mouth. and it also seems to be easier to get notes out of a kelly... just my personal opinion. but again different situations sometimes need different mouthpieces
I'm a 6th grader and instead of using a 5c I use a shilke 15 is that normal...
+Xander Man 23 well a Schilke 15B is the same as a Bach 3c. It really is all that much of an improvement on a 5c... it is a bit different than a standard 7c though in tone. but you get different tones as you move around. a schilke 15 is going to have a different tone than a bach 3c. its all a matter of preference. as well as a combination of mouthpiece and horn. my 14A4A produces a different sound in a bach strad than in my 1920's sherwood... however the diffrence in tone is always going to be different between the 2 horns regardless of mouthpiece
I think your standard lead mouthpiece may be better than that though. There is so many too choose from, but I doubt that is good for playing high because it is plastic, you just can’t compare a deep megatone with a large throat to a tiny lead piece, even if it is plastic.
You should try the wedge mouthpiece. I'd be interested to hear your take on it

If you turn your volume really high, you can almost hear Trent whispering some intelligible words.
Have you ever tried the Al Cass mouthpieces as used by many of the jazz greats, very easy high end but without the wooly plastic sound at the low end.
Just a quick tip: you'll want to press the valves down with the very tip of your fingers, which should make your hand into more of a "C" shape. It should help with faster and more precise playing.

I often notice on youtube how famous players play with flattened straight fingers. So they have not the tips on the buttons pressing like I learned it. It's a very different feel, hard to change that now.

I can only go up to a Double F but to be honest he can only play to a High D. The rest is just squeaks but with him doing the note fingerings.
On an unrelated note, if you use a bit more air you'll be able to play those high notes more steadily and with better tone.

A Bach 3C is NOT the be all end all of mouthpieces either. If we're going "big" for classical tone why don't the classical guys just play a Bach 1A? That's the biggest one they make. Full of phat tone, but you have to be King Kong to fill it up to go past high C. I find it funny that the 3C gets all this admiration for being medium. Really it's pretty large for most lead players anyway.
What is better, the Kelly screamer, or the lead Yamaha Bobby shew, I have the Bobby shew and I can get to a screaming G without to much difficulty, do you think this mouthpiece will allow me to go higher?
Bobby Shew and Kellys are very much the same to me. BS is a great lead piece and I wouldn't bother paying the money for another lead piece unless you need it for much outdoor playing as it is plastic. The range isn't going to change although plastic does give you better endurance to play those high notes for a couple hours longer.

There is no magic high note mouthpiece. If there was we'd all be playing on it. Just because Kelly calls his shallower mouthpiece a "screamer" doesn't mean it will give that kind of result for everyone. That said, I DO play what would be considered a medium shallow cup mouthpiece, but I've been on this configuration since 2004 and this one was loosely based upon an even smaller one I played for 24 years. Mouthpiece needs to fit ones face and features whether it's "big" or "small", but to have a "screamer" mouthpiece like some kind of secret weapon in your pocket to take out and pretend to be Maynard is ridiculous. There's a whole myraid of mouthpiece sizes out there. My advice from 52 years of playing and in the pro world is try them out and pick ONE that works for you all registers. Don't just grab the shallowest one out there just for a high note.

Warming up is more for the lips than the mouthpiece. But even holding the mouthpiece in warm hands is ok to have the mouthpiece become warm.

If you are a student, ditch the plastic and get yourself a standard Yamaha or Bach brand mouthpiece (metal of course) from you music store to your comfortable size for all uses.
I bought it. Didn't work. Only worked for him cuz he's super good lol. Get good first, then look into these kinds of mouthpieces.

Josef Klier makes some really shallow Trombone and Tenorhorn mouthpieces. JK P10G should be like a Bach 12C but stupid shallow. Schilke 43A is probably pretty shallow, but never tried it. I've tried a Schilke 40B and it's not very shallow at all, but the rim is very good for high pressure playing if you just want to squeal at all cost. Josef Klier Kölner form Tenorhorn 211-1 is almost identical to an Alto bone mpc I have, but smaller diameter (22.5mm vs 22mm). With the Alto piece, I can rip my Baritone Horn up into the Trumpet range without all that much hassle.
If you want a wider cup diameter, you're going to run out of options very quickly.

Trumpeter2016 it's a Kelly screamer, it's basically it's own size, but if you want an idea, the cup is extremely shallow and around a 3-5 c in width.

I accidentally told my teacher to get anew reed and im on woodwind. And i got a big reed for accident and it sounds so loud that i have to play softer to play normal.
For example mf which means mezzo forte and on english means medium loud
