Ive had 2 XJ's. 97 AND 99. The XJ was hands down the best Vehicle I've ever owned. Daily, Off road, Camping, Groceries, Road trip, you name it. I did it all for years. They never gave me issues. Both were unstoppable off-road even on very challenging obstacles. Ive always thought it was such a shame they stopped production in 01. It could have gone another 5 years at least.
Went with dad the day he bought a new 1988 XJ with the Laredo package. He bought it for my mom since she had been driving a Pontiac from the mid 70s. he let me pick one out from the lot I thought was best, so I choose the red exterior, grey interior 4.0 and 5 speed. He’s still driving it around to this day, completely stock. 300,000 miles, but it’s seen a lot of family camping trips, many winters and hot summers, so it’s definitely showing its age.
@@1966oldsguy That’s amazing you guys still have it what a trooper. That’s super cool all those years later still stock and happily living. What a good combo with the stick and 4.0
I had a ZJ in high school and my friend had an XJ, I was always jealous of his XJ for all the aftermarket support and videos on them but I still think the ZJ is extremely underrated. Loved your videos on both of these cars! Brought back some really good memories and has been watching facebook marketplace for a clean one at a good price haha!
Thank you so much! Yeah I guess the ZJ just wins me over with the coil springs and I’m partial to the interior I love it so much. Not to mention being able to get a V8.
After owning four Xj's, a 95 grand cherokee, a liberty, and a JK wrangler, I had the most fun with all of my XJ's. this is the one that still grans at my heart :). And I am looking for another :)
XJ is not only the best overall Jeep, but the best overall vehicle ever made in my opinion. It does everything well. It can be a street car, it can be a rock climber, it can haul a lot of people or be a like a Comanche and be a truck. Great reliable long lasting engine and 4wd system. Not too much electronic BS like new cars. It’s the perfect vehicle. Ands that coming from a CJ7 guy. XJ is number one and CJ7 is number 2 in my book.
Ugh. I am a diehard XJ/ZJ fan, but my experience with my 1991 Briarwood with the tow package, has been an absolute nightmare. I knew it needed an overhaul, and subsequently, an engine replacement, but no one can fix its ongoing electrical and cooling issues. Several ASE Certified shops, and custom fab offroad builders just keeping throwing in the towel; or I give up on waiting on them for months at a time. It’s a delightful thing to look at, but it’s a true Widow Maker. Almost 5 years in, and it’s still not dialed in.
Great video, very well done, but you missed one of the coolest trims/packages. The 91/92 Briarwood. It was the most expensive XJ to ever roll off the line and many of them sat unsold on dealers lots. I have one, and a 99 Sport. Love both and will likely never part with them as they both simply work without drama. Unstoppable in bad weather, dirt cheap to fix and fun/easy to work on.
Thank you! I didn’t even know about that. Reading up on them now, they look luxurious as all get out. Has to be the one of the rarest trim levels to find I’m assuming?
Sweet video! Recently got a project xj, traded an old mazda for an xj with a bad transmission. Never done a swap before and taught my self how to do it in my driveway. These things are the best vehicle to learn mechanics on. 310k miles and still going strong. Just don't make a crawler xj your daily and expect it to have the best road manners
That’s an awesome deal. No better feeling than learning how to pull a transmission for the first time. I was so overwhelmed for a sec my first time. Once it was out I was like what did I just do lol. Yeahhh the daily driver aspect definitely suffers and it becomes the fun vehicle haha.
You can still find a mint interior XJ on one with 100k miles. If I had the space I’d get one but I’ve got a thing for land yachts. Ain’t ready to let them go just yet
I daily a lifted zj, I have 6 XJ's all in different states of lifts and disrepair, a flatdecked MJ, and a 68 FSJ. Just a wee obsessed with them, nothing like DeXJ though
i got a 97 cherokee sport about 6 months ago. put a 6 1/2 lift running 33's but about to go with 35's, slip yoke eliminator, double cardan rear driveshaft and days away from new pistons and main bearings
Imagine if Stellantis read comments and realize that people would buy them if they brought it back, even as a limited production. But that'd mean they'd have to pay attention. Meanwhile every other vehicle looks the same, from Mercedes to Mazda.
I have a 2000 XJ Has a Rusty,s 4 in lift Billstein shocks. 31in Mickey thompson baja legend EXP tires. Titan High Output 4.0L Spartan locker in the 8,25 rear. Front axle assembly Dana 30 Hi pinion from a 97 XJ. 3 core all aluminum radiator. Smittybuilt front winch bumper. XBULL 10000lb winch. Jeep has 270000 miles.
Always a good day when you find a new channel that makes videos about 90s Jeeps

i love my xj. I wish i was born in a time where I could buy one new.

XJ Cherokees are awesome. Though I haven't had one, I have an MJ and had a second MJ. Parents had a ZJ. Just awesome chassis with great drive trains.

@newcarbad disk brakes too.
I love my 89 xj with 3 inch lift and 31s

Great video!
fun fact, south american versions had a dana44 front and back with the tow package!
The Cherokee was perfect
I bought an XJ originally as a beater and daily, now it's my favorite car. Unassuming, simple, reliable, capable and fun to drive.

nothin else drives like a jeep
Wish they made them with a full frame, the 84 to 2001 models anyways.
The AW4 alone on XJ makes it better Jeep than ZJ/WJ can ever be
Except the early ZJs, that also had the AW4!

Ive just bought a 2001 XJ. The fuel bill in the UK makes it an expensive daily driver.
@@Bongo4611 Yeah that is the downside. When I got mine I became very familiar with the low fuel indicator. Baffled me sometimes how fast it would go.
I'm also in the UK, with a 1998 XJ 4.0. Fuel is expensive, but this thing has needed so few expensive repairs that I'll happily forgive it!
The 5 speed cherokee is on another level, or for people that have driven their entire life.
Still driving a 1992 XJ in 2025 😂: ua-cam.com/video/pwxwl0Jfwmg/v-deo.html
@@WatchGeek Heck yeah. The classics do it better.
Rock on buddy! I hate all new vehicles.
A plastic valve cover was an engineering low point. I've repaired multitudes of them with PVC cement.
WJ WAY BETTER 😊🎉
Zj better
