Had to go into detail on the mall Jeep of America.
I have owned 4 XJ's... 2 x 97 1 x 2000 1 x 96 which is my current one and a keeper. It's in great condition with original paint and interior all in vgc. I have changed all the brakes/ calipers/ front axles/ hoses/ etc, even a new PCM. It's not my daily so it's sits quietly in the garage waiting for the weekend... It's got a 2 inch lift with 31 inch mud terrains. Yep they are an iconic vehicle.😊😊
Waiting for the wj
Dope music with the old footage 👌
At my college someone has a MW3 edition, super mint and cool to see in person.
Imagine if Stellantis read comments and realize that people would buy them if they brought it back, even as a limited production. But that'd mean they'd have to pay attention. Meanwhile every other vehicle looks the same, from Mercedes to Mazda.
The JK is the best compromise between street driveability and ease of use. There isnt a lot you can't work on it with JScan and some basic tools and there is even fewer things that could leave you stranded.
XJ Cherokees are awesome. Though I haven't had one, I have an MJ and had a second MJ. Parents had a ZJ. Just awesome chassis with great drive trains.
XJ is not only the best overall Jeep, but the best overall vehicle ever made in my opinion. It does everything well. It can be a street car, it can be a rock climber, it can haul a lot of people or be a like a Comanche and be a truck. Great reliable long lasting engine and 4wd system. Not too much electronic BS like new cars. It’s the perfect vehicle. Ands that coming from a CJ7 guy. XJ is number one and CJ7 is number 2 in my book.
i love my xj. I wish i was born in a time where I could buy one new.
Ive had 2 XJ's. 97 AND 99. The XJ was hands down the best Vehicle I've ever owned. Daily, Off road, Camping, Groceries, Road trip, you name it. I did it all for years. They never gave me issues. Both were unstoppable off-road even on very challenging obstacles. Ive always thought it was such a shame they stopped production in 01. It could have gone another 5 years at least.
I have a 2000 XJ Has a Rusty,s 4 in lift Billstein shocks. 31in Mickey thompson baja legend EXP tires. Titan High Output 4.0L Spartan locker in the 8,25 rear. Front axle assembly Dana 30 Hi pinion from a 97 XJ. 3 core all aluminum radiator. Smittybuilt front winch bumper. XBULL 10000lb winch. Jeep has 270000 miles.
The AW4 alone on XJ makes it better Jeep than ZJ/WJ can ever be
Except the early ZJs, that also had the AW4!
Ugh. I am a diehard XJ/ZJ fan, but my experience with my 1991 Briarwood with the tow package, has been an absolute nightmare. I knew it needed an overhaul, and subsequently, an engine replacement, but no one can fix its ongoing electrical and cooling issues. Several ASE Certified shops, and custom fab offroad builders just keeping throwing in the towel; or I give up on waiting on them for months at a time. It’s a delightful thing to look at, but it’s a true Widow Maker. Almost 5 years in, and it’s still not dialed in.
Great video!
You can still find a mint interior XJ on one with 100k miles. If I had the space I’d get one but I’ve got a thing for land yachts. Ain’t ready to let them go just yet
WJ WAY BETTER 😊🎉
The Cherokee was perfect
These were like some of the last decent jeeps made actually. Almost everything made in the early years was amazing and it wasn't until around these models that it started to decline actually. It was when they moved away from the squared off look that everything got questionable.
Wish they made them with a full frame, the 84 to 2001 models anyways.
"Last true Wrangler." Dude, the JL is the same Jeep. A little more capable, a little nicer on the inside, and a better automatic. Same standard engine, you get a few other powertrain options though
@@connoransberry6335 Yeah I don’t want disconnecting front axle shafts made of glass and worse build quality lmao. I’ll stick with my already garbage built JK thank you very much.
@newcarbad I've had both. My JL is built better, and the FAD went away in 22
@@connoransberry6335My CJ7 is 40 this year. Daily driven. Original axles, difs, engine. AMC 4.2L 258 I6. I would say it’s built better than a JK or a JL.
@nathanieladams7624 haven't had 40 years to know
A plastic valve cover was an engineering low point. I've repaired multitudes of them with PVC cement.
After owning four Xj's, a 95 grand cherokee, a liberty, and a JK wrangler, I had the most fun with all of my XJ's. this is the one that still grans at my heart :). And I am looking for another :)
You make great vids! Keep em coming.
fun fact, south american versions had a dana44 front and back with the tow package!
Zj better
i got a 97 cherokee sport about 6 months ago. put a 6 1/2 lift running 33's but about to go with 35's, slip yoke eliminator, double cardan rear driveshaft and days away from new pistons and main bearings
I bought an XJ originally as a beater and daily, now it's my favorite car. Unassuming, simple, reliable, capable and fun to drive.
I daily a lifted zj, I have 6 XJ's all in different states of lifts and disrepair, a flatdecked MJ, and a 68 FSJ. Just a wee obsessed with them, nothing like DeXJ though
nothin else drives like a jeep
Great video, very well done, but you missed one of the coolest trims/packages. The 91/92 Briarwood. It was the most expensive XJ to ever roll off the line and many of them sat unsold on dealers lots. I have one, and a 99 Sport. Love both and will likely never part with them as they both simply work without drama. Unstoppable in bad weather, dirt cheap to fix and fun/easy to work on.
Thank you! I didn’t even know about that. Reading up on them now, they look luxurious as all get out. Has to be the one of the rarest trim levels to find I’m assuming?
Great video! I made my teen dreams come true and got myself '97 Grand Cherokee, ZG in Europe as for EU market it was assambled in Graz, Austria in a little different Spec than US versions. And still, after 5 years of having it I really enjoy it the same as the first day 😊
@@marcintabak Thank you! I’ve always been fascinated with the ZG’s and know very little. What kind of changes/options differed?
The biggest differences are in lighting. In Europe, the front lamps must shine asymmetrically, in the USA the lamps shine symmetrically. The most important technical differences in European versions are much more stiff suspension, front and rear towing eyelets as standard, gearbox oil cooler as standard (in the USA it is part of the towing package) and heavy duty power steering (assist force inversely proportional to driving speed).
Sweet video! Recently got a project xj, traded an old mazda for an xj with a bad transmission. Never done a swap before and taught my self how to do it in my driveway. These things are the best vehicle to learn mechanics on. 310k miles and still going strong. Just don't make a crawler xj your daily and expect it to have the best road manners
That’s an awesome deal. No better feeling than learning how to pull a transmission for the first time. I was so overwhelmed for a sec my first time. Once it was out I was like what did I just do lol. Yeahhh the daily driver aspect definitely suffers and it becomes the fun vehicle haha.
I love my 91!
I love my 89 xj with 3 inch lift and 31s
The 5 speed cherokee is on another level, or for people that have driven their entire life.
Still driving a 1992 XJ in 2025 😂: ua-cam.com/video/pwxwl0Jfwmg/v-deo.html
@@WatchGeek Heck yeah. The classics do it better.
Rock on buddy! I hate all new vehicles.
I love my ‘11 JKU Sahara. It’s everything you described in the video. Thanks for the awesome JK tribute of information.
@@unwrangler11 Mine is an 11 also! Thank you for the comment, I’m glad you enjoyed it!
Ive just bought a 2001 XJ. The fuel bill in the UK makes it an expensive daily driver.
@@Bongo4611 Yeah that is the downside. When I got mine I became very familiar with the low fuel indicator. Baffled me sometimes how fast it would go.
I'm also in the UK, with a 1998 XJ 4.0. Fuel is expensive, but this thing has needed so few expensive repairs that I'll happily forgive it!
Went with dad the day he bought a new 1988 XJ with the Laredo package. He bought it for my mom since she had been driving a Pontiac from the mid 70s. he let me pick one out from the lot I thought was best, so I choose the red exterior, grey interior 4.0 and 5 speed. He’s still driving it around to this day, completely stock. 300,000 miles, but it’s seen a lot of family camping trips, many winters and hot summers, so it’s definitely showing its age.
@@1966oldsguy That’s amazing you guys still have it what a trooper. That’s super cool all those years later still stock and happily living. What a good combo with the stick and 4.0
I have a 5.9 Limited, 3rd owner. Love it to bits, but maaan my pocket hurts everytime I drive it. 91 ocrane minimum ;_;
I had a ZJ in high school and my friend had an XJ, I was always jealous of his XJ for all the aftermarket support and videos on them but I still think the ZJ is extremely underrated. Loved your videos on both of these cars! Brought back some really good memories and has been watching facebook marketplace for a clean one at a good price haha!
Thank you so much! Yeah I guess the ZJ just wins me over with the coil springs and I’m partial to the interior I love it so much. Not to mention being able to get a V8.
@newcarbad disk brakes too.
Always a good day when you find a new channel that makes videos about 90s Jeeps
I had WJ but ZJ is my favorite Grand Cherokee. Now I have XJ and I love it.
@@V8AmericanMuscleCar all of them are just such great models.
@newcarbad I agree. 👍
@oldcargood have you watched V8AmericanMuscleCar’s videos on his channel? He’s got great videos.
Went from a '97 ZJ LTD but the blend door issue will more than likely be resolved by Eldest who has a 3d printer whom I gave it to, thus no longer having to deal with plastic headlights. But everything else was great. Currently enjoying my 4 liter powered '87 XJ Pioneer, though the "Renault" seats in my girlfriends '89 Pioneer are more comfortable than my power seats. Though she just got a 4 liter powered WJ that will replace her XH as it has 305,000 plus miles on it. Though she had a '97 ZJ as well prior to her XJ. Most do not realize that these all do very well as they are, though some thing just because it has "Jeep" that it has to be lifted with mud tires. Her XJ in a foot n half of snow here in the Cascades during winter, as I'd say, "Jeep don't care." 😁 Note that I miss my '89 Grand Wagoneer the most, as it was mint which was hit in the rear by a drunk driver. 😪
When the VIC is working it's amazing, It offers more information then 90% of the cars on the road.
@@foch3 I went out of my way to fix mine and it was the best. Had no idea on what I was missing.
When Jeep Was Jeep and not Fiat.
i love my 5.9 zj
I always wanted a 5.9, still have my eye out for one.
Very honest and unbiased review of the JK. My 2010 currently has 220,000 miles and shows no signs of quitting. But I do agree I do not like driving it past 4000 feet of elevation. It starves for air and it really shows how underpowered it is a simple Regear will fix it though.
Great history! Love the unveiling of the ZJ.
My parents purchased one new in 97 with the 4.0L. It was a phenomenal vehicle. They finally sold it in 2017 and replaced it with a new Grand Cherokee. All of us agree that we should have spent the $40k on frame off restoring the 97 Grand Cherokee. It was far more comfortable, easier to see out of, and really just felt like you were driving a solid vehicle. The newer one is impressive in its power and fuel economy, but otherwise is a far inferior product. Both Jeeps were Limited trim models.
This jeep is best car in road end of road very combo car
